FEBRUARY CHAPTER MEETING: Pikes Peak PAHCOM co-sponsored the OSHA Update Event with the El Paso County Medical Society - Office Managers' Association! OSHA was in the building!!! Megan Meager, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Department of OSHA-Denver Office, provided an excellent update and reviewed many important things that practices must have in place. Frankie Gales, LPN, Director of Operations, EPCMS, OSHA Coordinator, spoke of her beginnings with OSHA and provided important steps and tools for practice managers to take what Megan had presented and place into a detailed OSHA Plan Guide for practices. Frankie threw in a "bonus" Disaster Preparedness Plan Template, as she also holds the title of the Director, Medical Reserve Corps of the El Paso County. Each attendee received the OSHA Slides, OSHA Plan Development Guide and Disaster Preparedness Plan Template on a flash drive from the EPCMS - OMA & PP-PAHCOM! The flash drive was well-received by the practice managers. If you were not able to attend this meeting, we still have some flash drives available. You may get those by contacting Frankie ([email protected]) at the El Paso County Medical Society or at registration during the March PP-PAHCOM Meeting. CMM (Certified Medical Manager) RECERTIFICATION COMMITTEE APPOINTMENT: Deb Lewis, CPC, CMM; COS Operations Manager; Mountain View Medical Group, has been appointed to serve on the National PAHCOM Recertification Committee. Deb was selected by Richard Blanchette, PAHCOM Founder. She will assist in helping establish policies and procedures that will guard the integrity of the Certified Medical Manager credential. We look forward to Deb's report from time-to-time. Congratulations Deb on being selected to serve on the PAHCOM Recertification Committee. CAQH -- PROVIDER CREDENTIALING CHANGES: Big changes currently underway with new software being installed -- CAQH ProView system. Many good things and the best one of all is... "self-register" with the system before a health plan initiates the application process!!!!! A favorite..... Upload supporting documents directly!!!!!! Please, Please check your providers’ files now that CAQH is back on-line. New login information is required for each provider and many additional questions to answer. Important note: The State Application that populates on CAQH for Colorado has not yet been updated to the newest version and Penrose/Centura is not accepting 2011 version, only the 2014 version will be accepted. I suspect Memorial will follow and everyone else soon (THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW - CHRIS HALL - "Sharing Knowledge" at its best). The most current version effective last year (02/14/2014) can be downloaded from COPIC Insurance, under the Resources tab: https://callcopic.com/. We are checking with CAQH to be certain they are in going to provide that application update soon. If someone finds this out before me, please let me know and we can pass it along.
ICD-10 IMPLEMENTATION DELAYED: October 1, 2015!!! CMS published DATE!!!! Please, keep your radar on ICD-10!!! National PAHCOM practices participated in the ICD-10 Congressional Hearing Panelist Debate Implementation and a final decision is forthcoming. CMS (Medicare) has placed lobbyists in Washington to try and avoid a last minute delay by congress this year. Last year it was a paragraph that was not debated in congress that delayed ICD-10 in 2014. Continue to move forward, as we are not certain what is going to happen!!!! Get your EHR updated, dust off your plans! It is attached to the "Doc Reimbursement Fix," please pay attention to both ICD-10 and avoidance of a --21% decrease in physician reimbursement. Respond to alerts from PAHCOM, CMGMA, MGMA, AMA, physician organizations, etc...... Pikes Peak PAHCOM has three members on the Colorado ICD-10 Training Coalition (Chris Hall, Susan Ogden and Sandra R-W) and will be working with the Coalition and the Colorado Medical and El Paso County Medical Societies in arranging for meetings to address "Provider Documentation." CMGMA will also be offering an ICD-10 boot camp. Did anyone participate in the recent National PAHCOM webinar and look at ICDLogic by Cypher for provider documentation assistance? My practice is testing this, so stay tuned!!!!
VALUE-BASED PAYMENT MODIFIER - VBPM (MEDICARE): A program that includes a modified payment under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule based on Quality and Cost Performance. If your practice is currently not participating in the PQRS Program, now is the time to start or more negative Medicare adjustments in the coming years. The Value-Based Payment Modifier which is starting to phase in first large practices and all providers by 2017 but the data from 2015 PQRS Data is what will be used by CMS for calculating part of the 2017 VBPM composite scores for practices/providers. There can be a positive adjustment, stay neutral or receive a negative adjustment; separate from PQRS penalties and EHR penalties or incentives. Also, start having your providers document chronic conditions, as this will help in the goal of providing "triple aim healthcare," the new pathway of healthcare. It is all about the changes forthcoming in reimbursement!!

MEDICARE REVALIDATIONS (RECERTIFICATONS): Check the Novitas website each month to see if your providers are due for revalidation for the Medicare System. DO NOT DEPEND on a letter from CMS. They just stop paying and it takes 60+ days sometimes to process a revalidation on-line. This can cause cash flow problems in one's practice. Complete revalidations through on-line PECOS system. Make certain you also now have authorized access to the I&A Access System (another set of passwords). This allows you to have access for all providers in your practice to complete Medicare/PECOS applications on their behalf, work on their behalf for EHR Incentives
