THE ROAD TRIP TO GRAPEVINE TEXAS HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Wednesday, November 9, 2016Otis House / Young’s Steak House Restaurant / Lake Pontchartrain Maritime Museum$58.00 per Person

Otis House: The house was built in 1885 by William Theodore Jay, who owned a sawmill near the property. In 1906, Jay sold the property and the sawmill to the Houlton brothers, Charles and William. The area became known as Houltonville and included the Johnson & Houlton Store, a U.S. post office, and about 250 sawmill workers. Frank Otis, whose family owned Otis Manufacturing in New Orleans, purchased the property from the Houltons in 1936 and used the residence as a summer home until his death in 1962. The house is an example of Queen Anne architecture, featuring 12-foot ceilings, wrap-around porches, turned balustrade and posts, and original heart pine flooring. Artifacts that are presented throughout the tour offer visitors a glimpse of life from 1885 to 1930. Master gardener’s will be on hand to discuss the butterfly gardens. We will have time to walk the boardwalk through the swamp. Young’s Steakhouse Restaurant: We will enjoy lunch in a private room. Lake Pontchartrain Maritime Museum: From canoes to pirogues, from bateaux to steamboats, Louisiana’s unique maritime history and culture has it all. Native Americans, European explorers, and early settlers depended upon Louisiana’s extensive bayous, rivers, and lakes as the pathways of survival, linking the interior with the sea. These waterways represented the connections among people, the connections of life.
