TOPICS STATEMENT

Homework, if properly administered, can be of great educational value to children. Research has shown that learners of all abilities can benefit from reasonable amounts of appropriate homework.

Homework (defined)Homework shall be defined as assignments made by teachers to be completed by students outside of the school day.

Class work (defined)Class work shall be defined as assignments made by teachers to be completed during the school day. An assignment made as class-work has the expectation that the average student will be able to complete the assignment in the allotted amount of time. Should a student not complete class-work in the allotted amount of time, this assignment, if appropriate, must be completed at home. This class-work not completed during the school day is not considered homework, but is in addition to a student's daily homework assignment. Should a teacher recognize that an assignment given as class-work cannot be completed by the average student in the time allotted, then the remainder of the assignment can become homework for students, at the teacher's discretion.

Make-up Work (defined)Make-up work shall be defined as assignments that need to be completed by students due to an excused absence (see Carlisle County School District Code of Conduct). Students shall have one day to make up work for each day of school missed. Make-up work is in addition to a student's daily homework assignment.

Requesting HomeworkStudents who are absent and wish to request their missed work may do so. The parent/guardian will need to contact the school office no later than 9:30 am to collect work for pick up after 2:00 pm that day. Homework that is requested is expected to be turned in according to make-up work policy above. Grades will be given for the missed work once the absence is listed as excused.

If students have more than one teacher, those teachers should confer with each other to make certain that their students are not overloaded with homework.

Operational Procedure: Retention Policy

Function: Retention

TOPICS STATEMENT

Identification of high risk Any child who fails two or more classes in the first semester will be identified as high risk for being retained the next year. In addition, teachers will review the students’ performance to identify any students who may be at risk of needing to be retained in a grade. Teachers will notify the principal (or principal designee) of possible students by January 15th of the current school year. At this time, a parent/guardian contact will be made and a conference will be scheduled to discuss some intervention strategies to aid the student. If in the first semester a parent conference has already taken place in accordance with our intervention pyramid, another parent conference may not be necessary. The purpose of the meeting will be to develop a consensus plan of steps to help the student avoid retention, which may include but not limited to the following strategies:

1. Extended School Services-when available2. Tutoring3. Special strategies in the classroom4. Special strategies for work at home5. Any other approach that appears likely to assist that student to

succeed. In the event consensus is not possible, the principal (or designee) will determine what steps will be taken. This step will be completed by February 15 when possible.

If teachers identify additional students who may need this attention after the January 15th deadline, they will notify the principal (or designee) and begin the process described above.

Final Submission By April 1, teachers will submit recommendations to the principal (or designee) as to which students they recommend be retained. The criteria for retention may include but is not limited to failing two or more classes and/or having a cumulative GPA of less or equal to 1.5. The principal (or designee) will schedule another parent meeting to discuss the recommendation of retention.

Parent/Guardian Written SubmissionIf a student is recommended by the school to be retained and the parents/guardians decide not to retain the student, the attached form must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian. This form will go into the student’s permanent folder.
