It Must be Spring

Hush, can you hear it?

The rustling in the grass,

Bringing you the welcome news

Winter’s day is past.

Soft, Can you feel it?

The warm caressing breeze,

Telling you the sticky buds

Are busting on the trees.

Look, Can you see them?

The primrose in the lane,

Now you must believe it—Spring is here

again.

French Afternoon Residents recently enjoyed a French Afternoon in the Home. We had a small buffet which consisted of Gherkins, Pickled Onions, Crackers, Pate, and French Cheeses. We played Music by French Singer Edith Piaf, and we tested our French skills by trying to speak the language. Many residents spoke about

their trips to France in the past with loved ones.

Childhood Museum Home Visit Diana from the Childhood Museum came to the Home with some vintage toys. The residents were able to handle the toys. The residents reminisced about their childhoods and playing with the toys such as spinning tops, skipping ropes, and

yoyos. They all said they had a wonderful afternoon.

hoops and parachute exercises. Our regular Thursday morning

chair exercises with Dorothy have not happened over the past

few weeks, as Dorothy was injured after an accident. We

would like to wish Dorothy a speedy recovery. Julie has taken

over doing some chair yoga style exercises to keep everyone

active.

On the 11th May we attended a Near and Far concert at St.

Phillips Church. We are invited by the children from

Towerbank School. The residents really like watching the

children perform. At the church the tables are decorated with

Residents Story

Every newsletter we dedicate a

page to a resident who is happy to

tell a story about any aspect of

their life. This story is told by Nan

Rostant.

Nan’s Story

Nan is always happy to tell the staff and residents and stories

about her past. Nan wanted to discuss the different places

she has lived.

Nan was born an only child to Jemima and Bob Whyte. She

lived with her parents and granny who owned a newsagent in

Cockenzie. Cockenzie is a town in East Lothian about 4 miles

away from Musselburgh.

Nan married Keith when she was 18 years old. Nan met Keith

on a blind date. Keith was a spit fire pilot and was originally

from Trinidad. Keith’s family all lived in Trinidad. Trinidad is

a Caribbean island. Nan moved to Trinidad with Keith when

she was 23 years old. Before they moved to Trinidad their

first home after being married was in Dunfermline.

Dunfermline is a town in Fife. Nan and her husband lived in a

cottage in Trinidad but found the heat unbearable. After a

year staying there she moved back to Scotland with her

Husband.

When they moved back, they moved back to help her Dad who

just purchased a hotel in Dunbar. Dunbar is an East Lothian

town about 28 miles from Edinburgh. Nan has many happy

memories of working in the hotel.

Nan went on to have 4 of her own children. Nan regularly

talks about her children and also about her first dog that was a

St. Bernard. Nan has been living at Viewpark since 2011.

Cabaret Act

We had two lovely gentlemen from Newcastle who came in to

all the homes to perform their act. They were very

entertaining. They dressed up in wonderful costumes and

performed songs and dances from musicals as in Oliver and

also singing Shirley Bassey. This was a very different act for

the residents and they really enjoyed the show.

La Boheme - Festival Theatre

On the 3rd June three of the residents went to the Opera at

the Festival Theatre. The Opera was La Boheme by the

Scottish Opera. Everyone enjoyed it and felt quite emotional.

The show was Dementia Friendly with a curator speaking after

each scene explaining the Opera in more detail.

Barge Trip

On the 6th June residents went on the first barge trip of the

year to Ratho. It was a wet day on the canal, but it didn't

dampen the residents day. We saw lots of kids on the canal

canoeing and the residents enjoyed giving them all a wave as

we went past. The crew on the barge are also a band. They

entertained everyone on board. There were two ukulele

players and singers. They do visit homes and all proceeds go

to the Seagull Trust. So we may invite them along to play in

the home in the near future.

Edinburgh Taxi Children Outing

Every year on the second Tuesday in June, the Edinburgh Taxi

Drivers take time off to treat some very special children to a

day at the seaside. All taxi’s leave from Murrayfield at 10am,

make their way down the Royal Mile, down London Road, and

through Portobello heading to Musselburgh for around

11.30am. From Musselburgh the taxis will head along the

coast road and end up in Dirleton. The taxi drivers put in a lot

of effort into the day decorating their taxi in balloons which

can include special themes. The staff and residents went out

to wave and get soaked by water pistols as the children went

by in the taxis.
