Collaborative Classroom ActivitiesThe 20 enjoyable, interactive classroom activities that are included will help your students understand the text in amusing ways. Fun Classroom Activities include group projects, games, critical thinking activities, brainstorming sessions,writing poems, drawing or sketching, and more that will allow your students to interact with each other, be creative, and ultimately grasp key concepts from the text by "doing" rather than simply studying.

1. Research Study

Have students research fever outbreaks in the mid to late 1700's. Encourage them to focus on all aspects of the epidemic. Ask them to present their findings using a multimedia program such as PowerPoint.

2. Research Study

Have students research Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the late 1700's. Encourage them to focus on businesses, politics, and downtown areas. Ask them to present their findings using a multimedia program such as PowerPoint.

3. From Another Perspective

FEVER, 1793 is primarily told through Mattie's eyes. Have students select key scenes from the novel. Ask them to rewrite the scenes from the perspectives of other characters in the scenes. Discuss how the point of view changes the story.

4. Research Study

Have the students look at a more recent pandemic or epidemic such as the swine flu to see how our country now handles such illnesses.

5. Newspaper Article

Have students take what they know about the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 and write a newspaper article. They should have the choice of writing about any aspect of the epidemic (symptoms, business closing, precautions that should be taken, etc.) Encourage students to do research outside of the book for their article.

6. Helping Hand

Have students create a list of ways to help fever victims. Have them write in detail about the way in which they would help and how they feel it would impact others and how it would impact them. Encourage them to research ways that can volunteer within their community.

7. Create a Soundtrack

Have students create a soundtrack for the book. For each song that they choose they should write at least on paragraph explaining the part of the book that the song connects to and why or how they chose that specific song to represent that section of the book.

8. Write a Letter


Have students choose two characters. Then have students write letters from one character to another. Students should infer some emotions and experiences but should also pull specific moments out of the book to cite within their letters.

9. Create a Diorama

Create a 3-D version of one of the settings (Bush Hill, the city streets, Joseph's apartment, the Cook Coffeehouse, Mattie's room). Present your diorama to the class.

10. Create a paper Quilt

Have each student create a quilt square for Mattie. The square can have both illustrations as well as words on it and should representative of Mattie. Put the quilt squares on the wall to have a completed "quilt."

11. Grandfather's Perspective

Take a portion of the novel and rewrite it from Grandfather's perspective.

12. Top Ten List

Use the Appendix to find a topic of interest and further investigate the topic. Create a "Top Ten List" of interesting facts about the topic and present it to the class.

13. Create a Journal

Create a journal from the perspective of a character in the novel. Use specific information from the text to create believable entries that discus the difficulties of living through the epidemic.

14. Character Bags

Select a character from the novel and write his/her name on the front of a paper grocery bag. Fill it with five objects from your home that represent that person. Bring the bag into class and share the objects with a partner describing how each fits with the personality and/or actions of the character.

15. Writing Obituaries

Write obituaries for any of the characters that died. Use specific information from the text.

16. Character Collage

Pick a character from FEVER, 1793, and create a collage representing his/her personality. Use magazines and artwork to create your collage. Be sure to select pictures and text that clearly demonstrate the character's traits as presented in the novel. Your collage should be no smaller than a piece of notebook paper (8 1/2" x 11") and no larger than a piece of poster board.

17. Experience Life as Mattie

Imagine that you wake up one day and realize that you are a teenage girl living in Philadelphia during the yellow fever epidemic. Think about what has happened in your life over the last week. Write a series of diary entries describing what


the last week of your life would be like if you were Mattie.

18. Create a Poster

Have students create a "Missing Persons" poster for Mrs. Cook. Make sure to list as many details about Mrs. Cook as possible.
