(A Song “Happy Thanksgiving”)

Teacher: Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

We are happy to see you at our party. Today we are going to speak

about Thanksgiving Day. You know, that it is a very famous and

popular holiday in the USA. We’ll do it in such a way: first, we’ll say

a word or two about the history of this

colourful holiday and then will play a

little and have a real Family Dinner.

Pupil 1: All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small

All things wise and wonderful:

The Lord God made them all.

Pupil 2: Each little flower that opens, 5

Page 6: Web viewThe food included, ducks, geese, venison, fish, berries etc... 7) Pumpkin and Thanksgiving Feast. ... Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to

Each little bird that sings,

God made their glowing colours,

And made their tiny wings.

Pupil 3: T – for time to be together,

Turkey, talk and tender weather.

H – for harvest stored away,

home and hearth, and holiday.

A – for autumn's frosty art

and abundance in the heart.

Pupil 4: N – neighbours, and November,

nice things, new things to remember

K – for kitchen, kettles, croon,

kith and kin expected soon.

S – for sizzles, sights and sounds,

and something special that abounds.

Together: That spells THANKS – for joy in living

and a jolly good Thanksgiving!

Teacher: Let’s divide into two groups and arrange a sort of contest. Let one

team be “The Indians” and the other one – “The Pilgrims”

Высказывания учеников двух команд на тему:

«FROM THE HISTORY OF THE HOLIDAY»

(За каждое высказывание – приз)

1) Thanksgiving is America's preeminent day. It is celebrated

every year on the fourth Thursday in the month of November.

Its origin can be traced back to the 16th century when the first

thanksgiving dinner had taken place.

2) Journey of Pilgrims

6

Page 7: Web viewThe food included, ducks, geese, venison, fish, berries etc... 7) Pumpkin and Thanksgiving Feast. ... Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to

The legendary pilgrims crossed the Atlantic in the year 1620 in Mayflower. 102

people traveled for nearly two months with extreme difficulty. No one was allowed

to go on the deck due to terrible storms.

3) Arrival to Plymouth

The pilgrims reached Plymouth Rock on

December 11th 1620, after a sea journey of

66 days. Though the original destination was

somewhere in the northern part of Virginia,

they could not reach the place owing to

winds blowing them off course. 46 pilgrims

died due to extreme cold in winter. However, in the spring of 1621, Squanto, a

native Indian taught the pilgrims to survive by growing food.

4) Day of Fasting and Prayer

In the summer of 1621 pilgrims called for a day of fasting and prayer to please

God and ask for a beautiful harvest in the coming season. God answered their

prayers and it rained at the end of the day. It saved the corn crops.

5) First Thanksgiving Feast

Pilgrims learnt to grow corn, beans and pumpkins from the Indians, which helped

all of them to survive. In the autumn of 1621, they held a grand celebration where

90 people were invited including Indians. It was “The first thanksgiving feast”.

6) Turkey and First Thanksgiving Feast

Turkey was a part of the initial feast. The food

included, ducks, geese, venison, fish, berries etc...

7) Pumpkin and Thanksgiving Feast

Pumpkin pie was a part of the first thanksgiving

feast.

7) The feast continued for three days. It was

not repeated till 1623, which again witnessed a severe

drought. Governor Bradford proclaimed another day of

thanksgiving in the year 1676. October of 1777 7

witnessed a time when all the 13 colonies joined in a communal celebration. It also

marked the victory over the British.

8) After a number of events and changes, President Lincoln proclaimed last

Thursday in November of thanksgiving in the year 1863.

9) Thanksgiving Day is a communal celebration marked as a sense of gratitude

people feel for all the good things in life. This is done by offering prayers, gifting

your near and dear ones. The fourth Thursday in the month of November is marked

for the yearly celebration.

10) Family Reunion and Feasting

Family feast is an important tradition during

Thanksgiving. The entire family sits at the table

during dinner and offer prayer to the Lord

Almighty for his continuous grace. It is also a

time for relatives living in different places to

come together and celebrate.

11) Tradition of Turkey

The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the

feast. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes

cooked everywhere to mark the day.

12) Parades

The traditional Thanksgiving parade probably started

with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day.

The full-dress parade is a way to display the

country's military strength and discipline.

13) Football Games

Watching NFL football during Thanksgiving is a popular

tradition. The traditional game between the Detroit Lions and

the Green Bay Packers continues.

The Thanksgiving legacy has been alive for hundreds of years. The customs

we see in our homes today remind us of ancient celebrations of harvest,

thankfulness for peace, and the endeavors of Native Americans. It consists of

stories of those who believe that gratitude for blessings is a virtue all must possess.

For centuries, «Thanksgiving Day» is associated with communal prayers in

church and in homes. People offer various

meal time prayers during the day. It is a

time, when mankind thanks God for all his

blessings and grace. It is also a day to show

gratitude to your friends and relatives for all

the good deeds.

Custom of Family Dinner

Everyone follows the custom of family

dinner and reunion religiously every year. Distances don't really matter as relatives

drive down to be with their family. Feasts are usually held at home. It is a time to

enjoy their favorite 'Roasted Turkey' with the family.

Ученик читает юмористическое стихотворение.

I Ate Too Much Turkey

I ate too much turkey,

I ate too much corn,

I ate too much pudding and pie,

I'm stuffed up with muffins

And much too much stuffing,

I'm probably going to die.

I piled up my plate

And I ate and I ate,

But I wish I had known when to stop,

For I'm so crammed with yams,

Sauces, gravies, and jams

That my buttons are starting to pop.

I'm full of tomatoes

And french fried potatoes,

My stomach is swollen and sore,

But there's still some dessert,

So I guess it won't hurt

If I eat just a little bit more.
