We are now in winter and it feels like it. Over the Christmas period, it was averaging at -30°C and snowing. Just the weather for our next show, Shackleton, if maybe a little warmer than Antarctica! But don’t let that scare you away from seeing our show! We promise that the theatre at the Pumphouse is quite warm! We are now in rehearsal for the play, which runs from February 23 rd until March 3 rd 2018. And yes, once more we will be holding a raffle in the lobby during the run of the play, with amazing prizes to be won! Our last production Deadly Illusions by Alan LeBoeuf, which ran from October 20 th until 28 th 2017, was a great success. The play was co-sponsored by the Stampede City Kinsmen Club of Calgary and was in aid of the Calgary Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers of Calgary. Editor – Paul Brown

Introduction:

Welcome to Issue No. 9 of the Confederation Theatre Society’s Newsletter. We are now in rehearsal for the play, which runs from February 23rd

until March 3rd 2018. And yes, once more we will be holding a raffle in the lobby during the run of the play, with amazing prizes to be won!

Our last production Deadly Illusions by Alan LeBoeuf, which ran from October 20th until 28th 2017, was a great success. The play was co-sponsored by the Stampede City Kinsmen Club of Calgary and was in aid of the Calgary Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers of Calgary. It was a pleasure to be associated with that distinguished group. Quotes from the audience and photographs of the performance are included below. Since magic was a major part of the show, we had professional magicians entertaining the audience before the performances. Everyone enjoyed their clever tricks!

Our A Little Night Reading series are still continuing, and we recently hosted a reading of my play about the Second World War in London, Mrs. Brown’s War. More about our reading series later in this Newsletter.

All this, plus some great one liners and some proof-reading mistakes from historical Bibles.

Enjoy our Newsletter!

The final days of the Endurance

CTS Newsletter No. 9 January 2018

Opening on Friday, February 23rd to Saturday, March 3rd 2018 we will present at the Pumphouse Theatre, the World Premiere of a play by Paul Brown and John Hickie. This is a radio play about the Antarctic Explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. This true story is of one of the great heroic adventures of the 20th century. In 1914, Shackleton set out from London on his way to the frozen Antarctic. The plan was to trek across the continent, a journey of 1,800 miles, and cross the actual South Pole. Unfortunately, the ship became stuck in the Antarctic ice and sank.

The crew were forced to abandon ship and with the expedition now over, they started a long on-ice journey for survival. They had no contact with the rest of the world and the world did not know where they were. They were far from the normal shipping routes with zero chance of rescue. They were alone in a frozen wasteland.

The play will be complete with ‘Foley artists’ (experts in reproduction of sound effects). The script is based upon the actual accounts by Shackleton and some of the ship’s crew. 100 years ago this was an amazing story, and it has lost none of its fascination since then.

Note the dates in your diary. Do not miss the epic event!

Notes from our previous show:

“Deadly Illusions”From October 20th to October 28th 2017 we presented, at the Pumphouse, Alan LeBoeuf’s murder mystery “Deadly Illusions”. The play was co-sponsored by the Stampede City Kinsmen Club of Calgary and was in aid of Calgary Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers of Calgary. The background of the plot was magic and magicians and to acknowledge this, professional magicians performed for the audience before the performance. And a great job they did. The audience loved it.

The play was special, well-acted, well directed and well produced. The set was magnificent and the clever magic cabinets, built by Marlon Wilson, were superb.

Some comments from audience members on the performance:

Plot twists galore! Incredibly acted and well executed. Loved the banter between the Inspector and her sidekick. - K.M

Fun mystery to watch. Lots of twists and turns! Highly recommend it. - S.V

Well done! Just as I was lulled into thinking "just another murder show" it suddenly

became riveting with so many twist and turns my head was spinning. A great show! - DF

"Brilliantly written brain twisting whodunit will keep you guessing right

to the very end...Bravo!!!!"  - D A

Great play, just when you think you have it figured out another turn happens in the story! Clever, well written, keeps you guessing right to the end. Great cast especially enjoyed Inspector Sorochan’s role: reminded us of a female Colombo type character wonderful!

Truly enjoyed the play. Highly recommended! – P & D P

I had the privilege of seeing Deadly illusions...just as Agatha Christie spellbound us with her famous twists that kept us guessing so does Alan LeBoeuf in his new play. Deadly illusions is worthy to be put in the same calibre as shows I have seen in London's theatre. This is a must see fabulous piece of mystery and intrigue that will keep you guessing to the end. LOVED IT! - KG

And now for some fun:

The importance of good proofreading:

Anybody who writes books, plays, reports or even letters know the importance of good proofreading. Many an error can creep in unnoticed by the author. Alas, even the King James Bible has also suffered from poor proofreading.

The Wicked Bible published in the year 1631 contained two serious errors:

Exodus 20:14 should have said: “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

Alas the word NOT was omitted and the verse read, “Thou shalt commit adultery”.

Also in the same bible there was an error in Deuteronomy 5:24 which should have read:

“And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness.” But it read:

“And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his great-asse.”

Sabotage was suspected and King Charles 1 ordered the Bibles to be destroyed. But there are other errors in other Bibles. For example:

In 1535 the Coverdale Bible in Psalms 91:5 should have said, “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night ...”

But it read, “So yet thou shalt not need to be afraid for any bugs by night …”

In a 1795 King James Bible in Mark 7:27 it should have said, ”.. Let the children be filled: …”

But it read, “… Let the children be killed; …”

In a 1702 King James Bible in Psalm 119:161 it should have read, “Princes have persecuted me without a cause: …”

But it read, “Printers have persecuted me without a cause: …”
