ADMIN TEAM NOTESSHIVON

It was good to see so many happy choir faces at the “free tickets for choir community members” Premier of the New John Carney film Sing Street on Wednesday evening.

I am happy to endorse it…thoroughly enjoyable, great characters, great music. A must-see for teens and adults alike.

You can view the Trailer here (be aware that the movie has a lot more warmth, heart and fun than the beginning of the trailer seems to indicate)

Tonight (May 6) is its opening night at Cineplex Odeon, 780 Yates Street with showings at 7:20 and 9:45. (full schedule)

BILL

Since I posted last week’s Community Issue there has been an unusual flurry of community submissions for events that will be happening before the next Community Issue goes out. While they don’t fit the criteria for inclusion in this Admin Issue they are likely to be of interest to some of you so I have posted them online in a PDF document. To find out if you would like to participate in any of them click here.

GETTIN HIGHER CHOIR INFOAPPRECIATIONS

WITH MUCH APPRECIATION FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS AND CARDS…

I found myself overwhelmed this past week, and since my Birthday on April 30, by your loving cards and donations toward the Gloria Hansen Sewing Center in Mozambique. It was a brilliant idea of Shivon’s to put

this together, and although there are still cards and donations coming in…we will have raised over $6000 toward getting the Sewing Center equipped and operating as a very positive business and training place for those who want to learn and participate in sewing as a now and future opportunity. The Sewing Center will also be providing colorful and exciting new clothing for many children. I can’t wait to see some of the creations. Shivon will be bringing back photos when she visits in June.

Thank you all so much. Gloria

DONATED TICKET FUND

In past seasons the collective generosity of our membership has resulted in 20 to 30 people coming to hear each concert who could not have afforded to pay for tickets themselves and would have had to miss the exquisite aural experience that we so humbly offer.

We invite you to participate in this choir tradition by donating the price of a ticket for our upcoming concerts (or part of a ticket…$2, $5, $?...or even a bunch of tickets) to our “Donated Ticket Fund.” If you want to donate by cheque please make it payable to the Caia Connection

To make a donation please see the ticket sellers during the break any choir night up to and including our big rehearsal night. If you are not coming to choir this season but would like to contribute to this fund please mail your donation to…

Caia Connection Donated Ticket Fund, c/o Bill Hanson, 101 – 75 Gorge Rd. West, Victoria, V9A 7A9.

These “Donated” tickets will be given out in the order requested as they become available. If you know someone who would qualify for such a ticket we invite you to request one for them from the ticket sellers any choir night.

CURRENT GHC ONLYSWAT SCHEDULE

MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT

Thursday, May 19, 6:15, at UVIC

For Current GHC singers only

A Public Talk and Book Launch, Thursday with Murray Thomsen, author of: Why 865 Order of Canada Recipients are calling for Nuclear Disarmament (poster)

At Room 123, Engineering and Computer Science Building, UVIC

Ann Mortifee will be there, and she would love to have a group of us sing with her on Let's Give Peace a Chance.

Because of space restrictions, we can have no more than around 75 singers  - approximately: 20 Soprano, 20 Alto, 20 tenor and 15 bass.

We would want singers who would  feel very confident in knowing both  words and music by  heart, in a smaller group than usual.

NOTE: Because of this very special invitation, and because both Denis and I need to be there, Denis on Piano, and me directing,  we will have to cancel GHC that night, something that we have rarely ever done in 20 years of GHC!  Thursday night singers are encouraged to come either on Monday or Tuesday that week. Or, you might want to come to UVIC and be in the audience, if you are not part of the group that is singing. Stay tuned for when and how to sign up.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SWAT Monday May 30th, afternoon, UVIC

For Current GHC singers only

At the David Lam Auditorium

Restorative Justice Victoria and Greater Victoria Police Victim Services  - a public event for Victims and Survivors of Crime Week (May 29th to June 4th). The theme of this year's week of recognition is The Power of Our Voices.

The event will feature speakers who will address aspects of trauma both from a professional point of view and from a survivors' point of view. The line up and timing is still being worked out, but we'd likely be on mid-afternoon'ish. Further details T.B.A.

We will sing 3 songs:  Walk a Mile (current GHC version), Building Bridges, and How Could Anyone Ever Tell You.

Here is a recent article about RJ Victoria for context:

http://www.vicnews.com/news/376740791.html

Once I have further details, I'll know how many singers we'll have room for.

Stay tuned for when and how to sign up.

***** Extra Practice! ***** Extra Sociability! ***** Potluck? *****

We are now 6 weeks away from concert time and a couple of home sectional per section total would be great between now and then would be great.

To reach that goal we still need hosts for at least one more sectional for each section (more is ok)

If you want to be a host for any section go for it! If you are interested but have questions contact me. Either way please contact me at 920-4160 or email me at [email protected]

Shivon or Denis will participate when they can.

GHC JUNE 10 & 11CONCERT BENEFICIARY INFO

THE CAIA CONNECTION ~ MOZAMBIQUE (repeat for those that missed it previously)

The Gettin' Higher Choir has produced Benefit Concerts every year since 1999 for development work in Mozambique. We started out helping the village of Kapasseni get back on its feet after 30 years of war, and since then have  expanded into other projects in nearby communities.  To see why we got involved, and what the results of all these benefit concerts have been,  be sure watch the on-line videos “Journey To Kapasseni,”  “Kapasseni Update 2003” & “Return To Kapasseni.”

Seeing these excellent documentaries will add substantially to your joy in singing in our upcoming concerts. The Caia Connection (TCC) is a Registered Canadian Charity committed to raising funds in support of these projects in the Caia District of Sofala Province, Mozambique.

For further information , check out The Caia Connection (TCC) at: http://www.caiaconnection.org

June 4, 2016, from about 9:40 am to 10:30 am.

At Centennial Square, City Hall, Douglas and Pandora

Open to any of you singers in our huge choir community who know our African repertoire (or most of it!).

The Walk is a national event across the country and a significant fundraiser for the Grandmothers for Africa. We are invited every year to sing them off on their long walk!

We will sing for about 10 minutes - songs might include:  Siyahamba, Shona Malanga, N'Kosi Sikeleli Africa, Asimbonanga,  Babe Thandaza

Even if you know most but not all the songs, come anyway if you feel called. We will have a 20 minute warm-up & run through of songs first.

They are all quick to learn (except for N'Kosi Sikelel'i).

Closer to the time, I will ask for singers to sign up with me, so I'm sure to have enough!

SOUNDINGS NEWS & BUSINESSSOUNDINGS CONCERTS MAY 21 & 22!

For those who don't know, Soundings is my 26-voice auditioned ensemble. We do mostly a cappella vocal music with a wide range of styles. This season's theme for the concerts is "Landscapes - vocal music that honours our relationship with the Earth". The songs we'll be singing range widely, including: choral settings of Robert Frost, Stan Rogers, the Beatles, and Talking Heads(!), and music from ancient

Ireland to contemporary Israel. I'm excited about two compositions of mine as well: a setting of the Chinese T'ang Dynasty poet Li Po, and a setting of the Native American "The Beauty Way" for choir and soloist. Our special guest will be Niel Golden, percussion and hang.

Concerts Sat May 21, 8:00, Oak Bay United Church, and Sunday May 22, 2:30, St Mary's Church, Saanichton. Tickets $20/15, available on-line here

CCLT GRADUATE’SNEWS & UPDATES

CCLT GRAD’S UPDATES THIS WEEK

LAURENCE COLE CCLT-2006/7

A GREAT GIFT TO THE WORLD OF SONG!

Composer Laurence Cole is leader of Port Townsend's PT Songlines , wants to gift approximately 50 of his wonderful songs and chants to the world via a very special "Laurence Cole Song Sharing Project" web site.

His songs have been sung for the sheer enjoyment of it many times by HNC and GHC members. For example:

Core Repertoire and other “at practice” songs: Humbly We Walk Here, Let Things Ripen, For The Children, In This Life, When We Come Into Our Calling & Do The Best You Can)

Past GHC concert songsHandsome Land" and "Trees Grow Slow

To accomplish this goal he has launched an Indiegogo fundraising campaign to cover the costs of developing the site and recording all the songs.  Each song recorded and posted will be accompanied by sheet music and recorded parts files.  All of which will be free to download by song leaders everywhere for the benefit of all the singers they lead such as us!

An Open Letter From Laurence Indiegogo Campaign Page

The campaign is over half way to its Indiegogo goal after only 6 days. With your help we the campaign is on track to raise enough to cover the recording and web site costs of the project launch and to establish a fund to support on-going project development. What a great way to help him share his music freely with others who are spreading the harmony that comes from singing in community.

~ Bill (in support of Laurence's incredible work and great generosity)
