2017-2018 Welcome Packet

WhoStudents from Lebanon and surrounding communities and their families are invited to COMP-Northwest to attend the Lebanon Health Career Ladder (LHCL) Academies. The curriculum is designed for students in grades 6-12; however, both younger and older students may be accepted into the program so long as there is program capacity.

In order to provide age-appropriate curriculum students in the program are divided into 4 cohorts:

Albert Einstein– generally students in 6th grade Isaac Newton – generally students in 7th grade Rosalind Franklin – generally students in 8th grade Marie Curie– all students in grades 9th -12th

Adult accompaniment of students is required, as participation from parents, guardians or designated adults is a vital part of the experience. A separate parent session is hosted in parallel to the programming offered to students. At these sessions, a parent specific curriculum is delivered with lectures, activities, and parent board meetings.

At each Academy, the LHCL serves not just our Middle and High School aged students and their families but also our COMP-Northwest Medical Students, as well as Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College student volunteers. Here they gain valuable leadership experience, have their sense of civic responsibility fostered, and are provided opportunities to integrate and expand on what they are learning in their classes.

WhenAcademies are always on Saturdays. Doors open at 8:30am, programming begins at 9:00am, and lunch is served at noon and ends at 1:00pm. Below are this year’s dates and themes:

WhatCOMP-Northwest in partnership with the Lebanon Community School District and in collaboration with students and faculty at Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College, has created a career ladder to guide and promote students through their self-selected educational pathway and into successful careers (especially as health care professionals).

The LHCL provides opportunities for students to create, explore, and develop college and career goals as well as objectives. This is accomplished through a series of free Saturday Academies hosted at COMP-Northwest in Lebanon Oregon. At these Academies COMP-Northwest professors, physicians, scientists, medical students, and our community partners engage the whole family in occupational workshops. These educational workshops feature hands-on science activities, and goal setting sessions, which build skills and confidence for students from Lebanon and surrounding communities in grades 6-12. Lunch is provided for all attending.

WhyOur Vision

Moving students toward college and careers with a focus on STEM (science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs

Our Mission In partnership with local educational institutions and area, community groups the Lebanon Health Career Ladder guide students toward college and careers with a focus on STEM (science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects

Objectives Students will, at an early age, be exposed to the spectrum of health care professions,

emphasizing fun practical experiences and hands-on learning. LHCL activities will be fun, engaging, and academically enriching. Each year the number of participants positively impacted by the LHCL will increase. The LHCL will foster family involvement in their child’s education. The LHCL will encourage community investment in participants. LHCL alumni will continue to support the LHCL program The LHCL will produce culturally competent health care professionals. The LHCL will foster community involvement and commitment to the underserved in

Lebanon and the Mid-Willamette valley. The LHCL will collaborate with surrounding academic and healthcare institutions to create

opportunities for our students. Students will have the opportunity to explore the possibility of attending college. Students will understand the pathway to college and articulate an educational pathway in

their area of interest. Students will review math, science, and verbal skills needed for undergraduate and

professional school admission and success. Students will develop “Professional Behaviors” (positive choices, personal responsibility,

goals, kindness, humility, respect, empathy, caring, compassion, appearance, patience, honesty, abide by the law, communication and discipline).

Students will enhance their test taking skills and participate in exam preparation (PSAT, SAT, MCAT, etc.).

Anything Else We Should Know? How to Apply

Please visit our website and apply online at:

We also accept applications at our registration tables the morning of an Academy.

White Coat Ceremony

At our first LHCL Academy each year, we host our White Coat Ceremony. At this ceremony, we recognize students who joined the Health Career Ladder in the previous year by giving them a white coat to wear while attending the program. It is at this Ceremony that we promote Cadets into Biomedical Scholars. For over 100 years Physicians have worn the white coat, but today it has been adopted by other health professions. For us the Ceremony serves as a rite of passage for students enrolled in our program, who have made a commitment toward creating, exploring, and developing college and career goals and objectives.

After receiving their white coat in their second year of participation students do not partake in the white coat ceremony again, but are granted the privilege to continue to wear it at each subsequent academy.

Attendance

We do not require students and their families to attend every academy, however we do incentivize participation. We track attendance at every academy and provide special end-of-year prizes to those with perfect attendance. We understand that other extra-curricular obligations may prevent a student from making every academy and do allow for 1 make-up academy. Speak to your Curriculum Officer for more information.

Badges

Each student attending the program must wear a Name Badge. These badges are used to help encourage attendance, distinguish cohorts, recognize past participation, and of course help us learn names. Here is an example Badge:

Fundraising

Participation in the LHCL is completely free. We rely on donations and sponsorship to support the cost of operation. If you or your business is interested in finding out how you can support the program, please contact our LHCL Operations Coordinator Mindy Utley at (541)259-0221.
