winter edition

I hope you all have been enjoying FBLA so far! Between the Leadership Development Institute-North and weeks of competition screening, the last couple of months have definitely been hectic. Thank you all for continually signing up for events and showing enthusiasm for this organization. With the competition season rolling around in second semester, I wanted to share some words of wisdom for both those of you competing and those of you who are not going to be involved in the competition portion of FBLA. Competitions are definitely one of the most fulfilling aspects of FBLA, so if you did qualify in one or two competitive events, you should feel accom-plished. It was tough for the officers to pick the most qualified candidates for each event, and we appre-ciate your preparation, commitment, and interest in the competition process. However, now that you have a competition, it is time to start studying. Studying may sound daunting, but there’s really no way around it. Pick up a couple of textbooks in your event, talk to people who have competed in the same event in the past, ask the Vice President of Competitions any questions you have, and start early. While some competitions are not as competi-tive on a section or even state level, there are competitions where people are fighting for a 99% to qualify to the next level. Even if you spend 3 hours a week studying for your competition, you would be well on your way to success in FBLA. Attend tutorial study sessions to study in groups with other people in your event. Take practice tests. Use the resources we have given you. When you are on stage at the National Leadership Conference, 8,000 people watching you live as well as countless viewers online through a live-broadcast system, you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment. It is possible; all it takes is hard work.

hey fbla-ers, I hope you all have been enjoying FBLA so far! fresh choice fundraiser recap!Hey Lynbrook FBLA, I was blown away by the turnout at the Fresh Choice Fundraiser we had last Thursday, the 18th! I thought I got there early by going at 5:30, but there were already 8 people or so eating. I was unable to stay until the chapter dinner, but I heard there were over 35 people, which is amazing! Everyone who came out to the fundraiser should be proud for sup-porting FBLA. And don’t worry if you missed the fund-raiser! There will be more to come in the future. Thanks for all your support! James Hu, Treasurer

Lynbrook FBLA is having a fantastic start to making a differ-ence in our community. In early October, members volunteered at the Cupertino Annual Fall Fest, hosted by the Cupertino Rotary. Members had a fun time helping run the Arts and Crafts booth, as well as supervising children's activities like the bounce houses. On October 30, members showed their environmental, eco-friendly side by participating in a Tree Bank Workday by Our City Forest. Our volunteers put on their gloves and helped get plants ready for planting for the future. Just recently on Thanksgiving morning, Lynbrook FBLA volunteers put on their coats and jackets, and arrived at HP Pavilion at 6 A.M. to help out at the annual Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. Members got ready and dispatched to their assigned water aid stations. As soon as they arrived at their location, they got to work filling up hundreds of cups of water to pass out to runners. Within a half hour, a myriad of runners were running straight towards us, and members were scram-bling to pass out water efficiently, while avoiding spilling water on themselves. Make sure to keep an eye out for future community service events, which will be coming up soon. Together, we can make sure our community will be fblawesome.

First of all, congratulations on receiving your competitive event (and if you didn’t, no worries, there’s more to FBLA than just com-petitions)! Now that you’ve survived the long and tedious screen-ing process, you may be wondering what you can do to prepare for your competitive events. Lynbrook FBLA has many resources that we will provide, but it ultimately comes down to how much time and effort you put into studying. We suggest studying a little bit daily, so that when Bay Section or States rolls around, you won’t have to cram everything in at the last minute, which is often ineffective and definitely no fun. You should have already received a username and password for the FBLA website via email. Once you log in and go to the Competition Resources section, you will see several general study materials for your perusal right at the top of the page including a : a Studying Resources Guide, a Document of Textbook Resources, and a Document of Student Testimonials. The Studying Resource Guide is an overview of study sessions, study materials, and overall how you can best prepare for your competitive events. The Docu-ment of Textbook Resources is a list of textbooks or reference books that we highly recommend for studying purposes. The Doc-ument of Student Testimonials is a compilation of tips, suggestions, quotes, and overall good wishes from successful and experi-enced FBLA competitors, past and present. Please refer to these documents first before you ask us any questions about study sessions or resources, as the answers prob-ably lie somewhere within them. If you still have any further ques-tions, your lovely VPs of Competitions are here to help! So roll up your sleeves, fight back the urge to procrastinate, and start studying!

Looking for an opportunity to learn about being “green and healthy?” Look no further! Lynbrook FBLA’s Go Green Committee will be hosting an “Intro to Green and Healthy” presentation by Our City Forest, a nonprofit organization prominent in San Jose. The introductory presen-tation will take place on January 13, 2010 during our weekly chaptermeeting.

A three to six week series of workshops will follow – a chance for edu-cation and possibly even community service hours. Further details will be presented at the meeting. Don’t miss out!

On November 12, 2010, the FIRST Lyn-brook FBLA social of the 2010-2011 school year was held. There were chips, cookies, soda, pizza and FBLA-er's galore. Many members enjoyed intense games of Foos-ball and Ping Pong, bringing out their com-petitive side in preparation for BSLC only a couple of months away. Meanwhile other members, tucked away in little corners, gossiped and giggled about Winter Formal dates, the latest Call of Duty, or the "crazy hard" AP Bio test. As the social came to its midpoint, the members gathered around in a circle and an interesting icebreaker was played. The game entailed performing a dare hidden underneath a layer of gift-wrap when the music was stopped. High-lights of the dares included: our president attempting "the jerk", and two unnamed members trying to pass a cup using their necks. As the social drew to a close, members headed home with smiles on their faces in anticipation of the next fblawe-some social of the year.
