The Times

Please listen to me, underclassmen. You don’t want to be a Senior. Turning seventeen was the worst decision I ever made – because with such advanced age comes a host of duties,

expectations, and responsibilities that I never expected. College applications take over your life, closely pursued by a barrage of scholarships, each begging to you (or is it your wallet that’s doing the begging?) Please! Just write a quick 1,000 words for me! It’ll be easy! What… is your full,

legal name? What… is your academic quest? What... is your collegiate color? And just like Monty Python, should you

take one misstep, you’re flung into an abyss of misery and

rejection letters. College tours are the worst, however.

One moment the officers down at UC Dream School

are saying, “Hey! This is our beautiful campus! You’re going to love it here!” and the next they’re demanding the $200,000 in tuition accrued over four years. Being a Senior Citizen at STHS does have its advantages, though:

off-campus food, ignorantly blissful Senioritis, and strikingly handsome t-shirts. Whether anything can make up for the torture of the twelfth grade, however, is debatable. So please,

underclassmen, take my advice. Don’t grow up to be a Senior. Anything but that. -Daniel Sandborn

The Writings

The Poets’ Café  Excerpts from the Poetic Among Us

 Shattered Porcelain

-Submitted to the Longship Anonymously

We are all porcelain dolls.

So fragile, so careful.

Everyone's being careful of something- Of not letting others too close,

for fear of being shattered. Of not stepping on toes and shaking things up,

for fear of knocking someone off the shelf. Of not letting our true selves show,

for fear of being crushed. So we put up walls

To protect ourselves from breaking- But the walls are nothing more than tissue paper.

And someone always breaks through.

There are moments in life when you can feel all of this. When you're not careful enough,

When you let the tissue paper fall away, When you let down your guard.

There are those certain moments when something happens: Someone says a word, moves a muscle.

Someone hurts you. This isn't a long drawn out gesture. It's one moment-

And in that moment you can feel yourself crack.

And so you rebuild the walls, Coat yourself in tissue paper,

Protect yourself from further harm.

Life is all about balance. About learning where to stop in each direction.

Protect yourself,

Until you can no longer find the true you Hidden beneath all the tissue paper;

Or be open, and do your best to live with the cracks,

until nothing is left but the hollow air from inside

and shattered porcelain.

Silence isn’t Silent -Daniel Sandborn

I fantasize about silence, in order to have less.

I fantasize about the silence of a scintillating dewdrop on a leaf. The rustling of

infinite pine needles in a gale. The noise of a careful predator creeping through

reeds. The heavy footfalls of an ant that shake the ground. The inexplicable beauty

of a foggy, overcast, muggy day. The sunburst of a sudden realization that

Silence is not quiet.

A man strolls down an alley, completely unaware of

The balcony above him, where a woman cries about

The man that has forgotten her existence

Only to focus, instead,

On nothing.

A woman sits outside a fragrant cafe

Watching the populace stroll onward

But not seeing them.

Only to focus, instead,

On nothing.

A family eats dinner

Talking about their respective days

But not saying anything at all

The television blares through the room

The loudest occupant of the house, and perhaps the most intelligent

But filled with absolutely nothing, which its owners prefer

To silence, the subtle.

Silence is the loudest object in the universe.

What speaks louder than emptiness? Physical emptiness, emotional emptiness,

spiritual?

Each screams out – Fill Me Up!

Not with the purified, cleansed, filtered nothing that you have been extracting from

within.

Fill me up with silence!

In order to let the world fill you up with itself.

Photography All students at LTCC were invited to attend the Bishop Paiute Pow Wow and Yosemite to take photographs on September 25 - 27. This was an opportunity for students to learn first hand about American culture as tribes from throughout the Southwest gathered to celebrate the fall.

Students learned to use both digital and black and white film cameras. Here are a few of the photographs taken by students.

Annika Johnson’s black and white photograph of the Pow Wow Princess (top left). Jackson Kuzmik’s photograph of young dancer (top right).

Haley Chamarro’s photograph of photography instructor, Eric Harrod jumping over Yosmite Valley (bottom left). Kiva McCollum’s sepia toned photograph of a grandmother with her granddaughter.

Some of the Pow Wow photos will be entered in the National Nikon

Photography contest!

This Saturday, students will be developing their black and white film photographs at LTCC.

There is a school with 1,000 students and 1,000 lockers. On the first day of term the headteacher asks the first student to go along and open every single locker, he asks the second to go to every

second locker and close it, the third to go to every third locker and close it if it is open or open it if it is closed, the fourth to go to the fourth locker and so on. The process is completed with the

thousandth student. How many lockers are open at the end?

The Voices

Letter to the Editor Ally Swain

Senioritis. It seems like even the freshmen have it. Symptoms include procrastination, lethargy, and apathy. As a senior I can finally say that I have senioritis, but my problem thus far into the year is confusion. For instance, a friend recently sought out the “Letter of Recommendation Request” packet. It makes sense that we have to fill one out, I mean there’s two hundred and fifty of us or so that might be asking for a recommendation, yet this was the first I had heard of a form. Okay, they hadn’t told us about that but I mean college apps were only due in a few months and counselors have so much free time to write about how special we are. Not a big deal. Another thing is senior pictures; the ones just for the yearbook which are somehow different than senior portraits. I’ve been assigned a date… although I have no idea of who I need to talk to to change it or if it is free. What’s even better is no one has addressed the proper procedure for asking for official transcripts, or anything else that is essential for college apps. I know most of the school aren’t seniors, and some seniors won’t be applying to college, but the fact that we’ve been talked to about buying super duper pretty class rings, yet nothing has been said about forms and requirements to graduate and things needed to apply for college is pretty sad. Administration and or Counselors, if you could step up and (at the very least) send an email with all the important information, that’d be great.
