VILLA RICANEWS & VIEWS
VOL. 6, NO. 8
AUGUST 2013 | WWW.NEWSANDVIEWSUSA.COM
By Pastor J. Calvin Tibbs, Pastor at Kingdom Dominion ChurchJesus is still Lord, even amid the recent crimes in Villa Rica. These
events remind us of our individual need for Jesus, and our collective need for prayer! Satan hates progress and he detests unity. What bet-ter time to unify than after an attack from the darkness?
Fortunately, God always responds to tragedy but He does so much differently than we do. In exchange for an evil performed, the Lord punishes darkness through His goodness. A good example of this is found in the story of John the Baptist. When John was beheaded, Jesus responded by healing the sick and performing miracles (John 14:10-21).
When Jesus comes out swinging, somebody is about to get blessed! When we come out swinging, people get hurt! That’s what’s about to hit our city, a glory bomb of blessings! The families of the slain and the bereaved need this. Our community needs us to step up in the spirit and transact Kingdom Business in the same way Jesus did when his cousin (John the Baptist) was killed.
When we get together as a community on Saturday, September 14th at 3pm, God will hear our prayers. And if you are a business owner or know one, make sure they bring their prayer requests with them when they come. To assist the business owners, we will deliver pads and pens for them to record their petitions to the Lord. In plain English, we are going to pray for God to respond to the lists of our business owners. Let’s stand together to speak life into the Villa Rica economy.
Villa means “Village”, Rica means “Rich”. You are living in a Rich Village, which means you have spiritual and natural riches right where your live. If the truth be known, the riches are actually inside of you. You brought them with you when you moved here! It’s high time you started mining the gold and the hidden resources deep within you.
In a Biblical sense, (Mark 2:4) let’s join hands to cut a hole in the
ceiling and lower our merchants through the roof until they are face to face with Jesus. He is the only one who can heal our economy. On Saturday, September 14th, the economy will change for the better! Come and insure your personal economy is connected to this awe-some transfer of God’s grace extended to you.
Kingdom Dominion Church is located at 451 Bankhead Hwy. in Villa Rica inside the Tri County Plaza. Services are Sunday Morning at 10:00am and the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm. KDC’s Weekly Word is now shared through Access Groups on Wednes-day! Call the church for more information at 770.459.3600.

Saint Lucia - Wrapped in Romance Submitted by Tracey Snipes, owner, Travel Escapes, a
full service travel agency. 4090 Bankhead Highway, Lithia
Springs, 770.732.9434, www.travelescapesinc.com. Open
Mon. - Fri. 10am to 5:30pm and Sat. 10am to 2pm.
One of the Windward Islands of the West Indies’ Lesser Antilles, Saint
Lucia is nestled halfway down the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The
“Helen of the West Indies,” Saint Lucia is known for its natural beauty
and diverse attractions, including the signature Piton Mountains, a UNES-
CO World Heritage Site. Continually recognized as one of the most ro-
mantic destinations worldwide, every moment on Saint Lucia is wrapped
in romance.
St. Lucia has been inhabited since long before colonial times, and its
cultural treasures are a fascinating melange of its rich past and its many
different traditions. The island’s people have earned a well-deserved
reputation for their warmth and charm, and the island itself is dotted with
aged fortresses, small villages, and open-air markets.
Natural beauty greets visitors upon arrival to Saint Lucia. The lush
rainforest offers visitors a unique experience within the Caribbean. Activi-
ties include zip lining via the new Soufriere Hotwire, a ride through the
forest canopy on a gondola or take a guided tour conducted by the Min-
istry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Volcano and Sulphur Springs,
called the world’s only “drive-through volcano,” allows visitors to come
within steps from the site and experience one of nature’s true wonders.
Additionally, there are more than 20 pools of muddy sulfur and mineral
baths that welcome travelers. Saint Lucia’s Diamond Waterfall is one of
the island’s natural wonders and arguably the most colorful waterfall in
the Caribbean due to a mixture of minerals, rain and volcanism. Rodney
Bay, on Saint Lucia’s west coast, consists of a natural bay and 80-acre
man-made lagoon and a popular destination on the island where you can
spend the afternoon kite surfing or relax at nearby Reduit Beach, a stun-
ning stretch of white-sand facing the Caribbean. Visitors can find endless
activities both above and below the sea from scuba diving and snorkeling
among the coral, bouncing around forest roads on an ATV, biking through
the jungle at the Anse Mamin Plantation on the Anse Chasanet Resort, or
kite boarding at the Vieux Fort area at The Reef Beach Café.
Culturally rich offerings include the marketplace in the capital of Castries
and quaint fishing villages along the coastline. The annual Saint Lucia Jazz
and Arts Festival, the Caribbean’s premier cultural event, attracts thousands
to Saint Lucia every year. Other annual events include Saint Lucia’s Carni-
val celebrations and the annual Health and Wellness retreat to kick-off the
island’s Health and Wellness month in November.
Saint Lucia is a culinary paradise. Most restaurants offer European
menus enlivened with island flavors. There are excellent ethnic restau-
rants—Chinese, Creole, French, Indian, West Indian, and beyond. Local
delicacies include roast suckling pig, spiny lobster, crab, and curries. Res-
taurants catering predominantly to locals offer soused conch, turtle stews
and goat. Gros Islet Friday Night Jump-Up is a hot spot for both locals and
visitors alike. A variety of barbecue grills serve mouth-watering local cuisine
including chicken, pork and seafood. For travelers with a sweet tooth, Bou-
can by Hotel Chocolat offers a “Tree to Bar” tour leading guests through the
estate groves, selecting ripe cocoa pods to create their own chocolate bar.
For those looking to visit, Saint Lucia offers a diverse set of accommo-
dations for every traveler and every budget. The Island’s wide range of
accommodations includes world-class five-star resorts, all-inclusive resorts,
intimate inns and value-oriented properties.
Call your local travel agent for more information on what Saint Lucia
has to offer.

The title of this column is also the name of a wonderful book by Marie
Marley, who has a website by the same name (www.comebackearlytoday.
com). I found the following “Tips for Interacting With Nursing Home Staff”
in the caregiver blog section of her website. I wanted to share it with you
all because it really is wonderful, practical advice for families and friends of
nursing home residents. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Tips for Interacting With Nursing Home StaffOn occasion, there is friction between nursing home staff and family
members. This is unfortunate because staff members typically become
deeply attached and devoted to the residents for whom they care.
The following list of things you should never do will help you avoid
pitfalls that can occur when interacting with long-term care facility em-
ployees.
1. If you are dissatisfied with a staff member’s behavior don’t
hold it in and let it eat away at you. Communicate the issue prompt-
ly and directly to the administrator or director of nursing.
2. Don’t skip your loved one’s regularly scheduled care con-
ferences. These are good times to discuss your wishes or concerns about
the care your loved one is receiving and get updates on how he or she
is doing.
3. Don’t order the staff around. If you have requests related to the
care of your loved one discuss them with the director of nursing or the
administrator.
4. Don’t ignore input and suggestions from the staff. They
spend far more time with your loved one than you do.
5. Don’t expect miracles. Specifically, don’t expect staff members
to achieve things you yourself cannot accomplish.
6. If you have a large family, don’t ask the facility to commu-
nicate information to each one. Instead, designate one person who
will receive information from the facility and then share it with the others.
7. Don’t give tips or bring gifts for the staff if the facility has
guidelines forbidding them. Find out the facility’s policy.
8. Don’t be a chronic complainer. Everyone needs a compliment
from time to time. Find something positive to say when you can and be
sincere about it.
9. Don’t call the facility at especially busy times such as meal-
time, bedtime or the change of shifts.
10. Above all, treat the staff members with respect. Never
belittle, criticize, or be accusatory when interacting.

I remember the days when summer break started at
Memorial Day and ended after Labor Day. I thought
the summer passed quickly back then, but now, it is
much shorter and flies by even faster.
As we were gearing up for the 2013-2014 school year, it dawned on
me that I will have a graduate from high school in 2015 and three more
children, not very far behind. Yes, I will have at least three in college at
the same time. How are we going to get them through? What type of
debt will we need? Will they get scholarships? What can I do to save for
college before they get there? These and many more questions flood
the minds of parents who want to help their children get a good start in
life. Let’s take a look at a few things to consider when planning for the
education of your children:
1. Debt. It is easier to borrow for college than it is to borrow for re-
tirement. If you aren’t on track to retire when and at the lifestyle you will
desire, it is best to save for retirement rather than for college. If you’ve
read this article at all, you will know that I am not a fan of debt. With
Stafford loan interest rates rising, coupled with the protection provided
to lenders for these loans, it isn’t my favorite option to borrow for col-
lege; nevertheless, if your only option is either use retirement to pay for
college or get a loan, I would explore loan options to pay for college.
Thankfully, this is not your only option.
2. Scholarships and Grants. Even if your child is not a 4.0 student,
there are scholarships for a wide variety of students with different skills
and backgrounds. Here is a great place to start your search and help you
avoid scholarship scams: http://www.finaid.org/scholarships. Search the
free data bases on this website. If you are told that you have to pay for
a scholarship service, more than likely it is a scam.
3. Military Service. The G.I. Bill is also a great source for college
funding if your child is interested in serving in one of the branches of
our military.
4. 401k Loans. If you are confident that you will be working for the
same company long enough to pay back the loans, it may be worth
looking at this option. For more information on this: http://talk.col-
legeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1182125-can-parent-
use-401k-funds-pay-college-loans-without-10pct-penalty.html.
5. Penalty Free Withdrawals from Roth IRA. This money has
already been taxed and if it is used to fund tuition, it will be penalty free.
There are many ways to help your child with college expenses with-
out using debt. Sure it may take research and hard work; nevertheless,
anything worth doing requires effort.

Pet Care TipHot Days and your Pets
By Bark Avenue, 4719-A Carrollton-Villa Rica Highway, 770.214.8404
It’s hot outside, so it’s important to make sure your pets are safe. With these hot and long days, your pets need extra attention when it comes to hydration, just as we do. You need to double the amount of water you are giving your pets. Also, keep it in a cool area with easy access. Little kiddie pools are a great way to do this. You can also try adding ice to the water. Some dogs find this very entertaining, plus it’s fun to watch them chase the ice around in the pool.
During this heat, make sure to watch for excessive panting, dry mouth, lethargy, and seizures. Call your veterinarian if you see any of these symp-toms. Also, when you’re walking your dog, remember if it burns your feet it will burn theirs too. Pavement and sidewalks can easily burn paw pads. Should you see your dog licking or chewing on their pads after a walk, take a quick look to make sure the pads aren’t red, peeling, or look abnormal.

“In home care is beneficial for both pets and their owners,” says Teri Dar-
nall, “Animals do much better in their normal, safe, and secure environment
while surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and smells. They will receive
love and personal attention and are able to stick to their normal routine
while eliminating the trauma of an unfamiliar environment and exposure to
other animals and potential illness.”
Loyal Friend Pet Sitting not only provides a variety of services for dogs,
cats, birds, and other animals, including dog walks and pet day care, but
also household care as well.
The demand for professional pet-sitting and dog-walking services is at an

pet owners are moving away from kenneling their pets because of health
concerns, making alternatives like Loyal Friend Pet Sitting, more attractive.

Moving TipsHow to Prepare for a Seamless Transition
Printed with permission from realtor.comIf you’re moving this summer, the busiest season for moving, you
know how daunting it can be. But if you create a blueprint for your move, the transition from house to house will go more smoothly. Here are 10 things you can do to prepare for a seamless transition.
1. Full serve, partial serve or a do-it-yourself move. Can you do it alone or should you hire a licensed moving company for a full-service or partial-service move? This is one of the first and often most difficult questions soon-to-be moving households face. The answer depends on your lifestyle, household size, budget and amount of time you have to get everything accomplished. Get written quotes from at least three licensed moving companies so you know you’re getting the best deal based on your specific moving needs. Moving yourself or doing a partial-service move? Packing calculators can make it easier to estimate the amount of boxes and packing materials needed.
2. Plan to unpack BEFORE you pack. Take photos of each room in the new home before you arrive with furniture, plants, appliances and family in tow. Write down on a clip board where each item should go in your next home before packing, and carry it with you on moving day. List out the major items that need to be assembled first. As you place each item in its new room, cross it off the list and you will be one step closer to enjoying your new home.
3. Be strategic about packing. If you have more than a month to ‘pick up and move’, start early. Complete a free change of address and schedule utilities ahead of time at Moving.com. Start packing early. Whether it’s one room, one cabinet or a drawer at a time, weed through what may be years of accumulation. As you’re going through your be-longings, divide everything into these helpful categories: donate to char-ity, give to a friend, recycle, trash, pack now, or keep handy until moving day. You’ll be surprised at how much you can donate, recycle or give to friends. And, you’ll not be overwhelmed with the task at hand three days before you move.
4. Moving is NOT child’s play. Plan ahead. Consider daycare on moving day, or get help from a friend or family member. Provide lunch or some other appropriate thank you gesture if you do call in a favor. If that’s not an option, prioritize setting up safe places for your children to play in the new home on moving day so they’re not underfoot. This will help everyone remain happy and calm on moving day.
5. Don’t fight with Fido. Sometimes we forget that all the pack-ing and constant in-and-out of visitors is stressful for animals. Consider checking your pet into a daycare facility, or setting up a time for a friend to take them or check them into petday care. Don’t let your four-legged best friends get lost in the shuffle and remember to make day-of moving arrangements.
6. Keep track of small parts. Some items need to be broken down into pieces when moving, but do you know what to do with the small screws and washers that you end up with? Rather than tape them to the furniture, which can result in losing them, put everything in a baggie that is clearly marked and sealed. Keep all of the separate baggies together in one box on moving day and personally take it with you to your new home.
7. Take pictures of electronic hook-ups. Hooking up TVs, DVRs, home theater systems and computers can be challenging. Before unplug-ging any wires for the move, take a photo of the connections, print them out and label them in detail. This will create fewer headaches when setting up technology in the new home. Keep track of all loose wires using baggies or boxes that are clearly labeled, and personally carry these easy-to-lose items on moving day.
8. Packing cleaning products and toxins. Products such as deter-gents, pesticides and paint are heavy and unwieldy to pack. Dispose of as many as possible before the move in an eco-friendly way. Call your city’s waste disposal department for guidance on proper disposal. For items that must be transported, pack them in a small box within a larger box for pro-tection against leaks. Don’t overstuff boxes with these items! Consider mark-ing these boxes in a different color, and seal them extra tight. Keep them separate from the rest of the boxes, particularly if you have kids and pets.
9. Consider getting full value insurance protection. If using a pro-fessional mover, it may cost a few dollars extra, but it provides peace of mind and eliminates later annoyances. Investing in full value protection means any lost or damaged articles will be repaired or replaced, or a cash settlement will be made at current market value, regardless of age. It’s im-portant to note that the required minimum coverage of 60 cents per pound would not cover the replacement cost of more expensive items such as a flat screen TV if damaged in transit.
10. Know your rights. If using a professional mover, research your rights as a consumer with either the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Admin-istration (FMCSA) for interstate moves or contact the state agency within the state in which you reside for moves within state. Also, enlist the help of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or local law enforcement if the moving company fails to live up to its promises or threatens to hold your belongings.

Southern Dance Precision Celebrates Anniversary
Southern Dance Precision (SDP) is celebrating its first year in business this month. However, the talented staff at SDP is far from new to the dance scene. Studio owner, Kelly Bell is a three time consecutive award winner for choreography, and brings 23 years of training and teaching, including a
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance, to the Villa Rica based studio. Bell has continually studied with world renowned choreographers and masters of their craft, and has enjoyed bringing her talent to our Carroll and Douglas County community.
The award-wining dance studio has shown tremendous growth in its first year of business. “The community has been very supportive and I’m so excited to be working with dancers in our community,” said Bell.
SDP offers ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, and tap. The studio will be adding Pointe and Acro classes in the fall, and with them two more high-ly-seasoned instructors to the already strong staff. Cortney Funk, a former member of the Atlanta Ballet and current member of the Georgia Ballet; and Kara Methven an award winning gymnast and dancer, who can be consis-tently seen in local professional dance company performances.

activity for its citizens and a venue to help put Villa Rica on the map of tourist destinations.
The Pine Mountain Scenic Railroad will travel through the beautiful mountainside, allowing passengers to exit and enter at the top of the mountain to explore its historic exhibits. The track is roughly a mile long, originating at the exquisite-ly-built train depot and passing the multi-purpose train barn that will house the train at night, as well as double as a maintenance building. The park plans to have sites throughout the ride to further enhance the experience, including a ride through the farm animal exhibit.
The city is currently accepting benefactors to help to offset the costs of purchasing the train, the train cars, and building the depot. Companies and individuals that contribute to the train project have the opportunity to earn different levels of recognition and rewards, including having a train car named for them and lifetime passes.
September 7th is the date of the annual Gold Rush, so the city has chosen that event to kick
off the Grand Opening of the train. Pine Moun-tain Gold Museum will host a Gold Rush event at the park in conjunction with the event held at The Mill amphitheater in downtown Villa Rica. Staff and volunteers will dress in period clothes, there will be demonstrations of activities from the pioneer days, vendors will offer crafts and other handmade items, and food will be as if from the Pioneer Days. The train will offer its first public rides as the Pine Mountain Scenic Railroad and will be treated to a special adventure prepared especially for participants at the event.
The Pine Mountain Gold Museum at Stockmar Park is a unique historical site with a museum, ac-tual mining sites, nature trails and gold panning all at one location. Experience gold mining tech-niques spanning over 100 years beginning in the 1820s through the early 1930s. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and awarded the Southern Arc’s Best of 2008 “Best Tourist Attraction” and the Carroll County 2009 Preservation Award.

The Real ThingWe adopted our youngest daughter when she was
six I remember the first summer vacation after she be-came part of our family. We headed to Gulf Shores for a week of family fun. She had never seen the ocean so every time we passed a large body of water she would ask excitedly, “Is that it?”
Ever notice how dads think goofy about what’s funny with kids? One time I thought it would be hilarious to hide behind a huge t-rex dinosaur on a putt-putt course we were playing with our three-year-old grandson. When he approached, I banged on the side of the statue and let out a big roar. You probably know the result. A nice family outing was spoiled as he screamed in fear and ran for his life, refusing to come anywhere near the large statues again. Not only was I the thoughtless culprit who scared a little kid, I also was the recipient of “those looks” from all the other adults in our once happy gang. But now back to the story of the ocean.
When we arrived, it was amazing watching her take it all in. She now had seen the beauty and immensity of the real thing and there was no way any imposter could compare. Her trickster dad presenting a counterfeit as the genuine would never fool her again.
I don’t believe there are any atheists, just people who have not yet seen the real God. They just don’t believe in the god or gods they have been presented, the imposters some trickster has paraded before them as the real thing. Once they encounter the real God, they will believe and will never
be fooled again.
I also think there are too many Christians who have been
duped into accepting counterfeits for the real. As one writer
said, “Too many Christians have eternal life, but are not ex-
periencing abundant life.” The scriptures teach us, “To him
who overcomes will be given a crown of life.” A lot of us
aren’t receiving the abundant life Jesus died to give us
because we have quit doing what it takes to overcome.
We settle for less because some trickster is telling us this is
‘as good as it gets.’ We settle for ok relationships, financial
struggles, and failing health because ‘that’s our lot in life.’
The Scriptures also teach us, “In His presence is joy un-
speakable and full of glory.” When we encounter the real
presence of God we will never be fooled or satisfied with any
counterfeit. We will have known the real thing and our enemy, that
trickster satan, will no longer be able to fool us with less than God’s best.
We will fight for what belongs to us, paid for in full by the death, burial and
resurrection of the real thing—Jesus Christ.
As I write this, my daughter is packing to take her young family to the real
ocean. She knows it well and won’t settle for less.

churchBeauty from Ashes
We are now at Yellowstone National Park. I don’t know how anyone could look at this park and not see God’s handiwork everywhere!!! In 1988 there was a massive wild fire that burned one third of the park’s woodlands. It was thought that the park might not survive the disaster. But just the
opposite happened. One of the types of pine trees in the area only releases it seeds in temperatures above 130 degrees. As a result new growth has sprung up where the devastation occurred. Also, it seems black bears prefer the burned/new growth areas as well. The ash provided vital minerals and
nutrients for plant and animal life. So what was thought to be the worst thing possible for the park actually gave it new life. It reminds me of the song “Beauty from Ashes”.
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we have to die to our-selves. But a life lived for him results in beauty. Jesus reminds us that this process is a daily process. We have to take up our cross daily. It can be hard to lay down our selfish desires on a daily basis. However, the result is a life without regrets that honors Christ. As in the book of John, “He must increase and I must decrease.” ~Missy

5 Fitness Myths Killing your WorkoutBy Sarah Barrett, Gold’s Gym Personal Training, golds-
Are you wasting valuable workout time on urban leg-
ends? We compiled a list of five of the most common
misconceptions that could wreck your workout if you’re
not careful. Women - make sure to read numbers four
and five - they are just for you.
CRUNCHES FOR SIx PACKS
Don’t let this discourage you from doing your ab exercises, but that six-
pack won’t be achieved with a crunches-only approach. The six-pack is the
product of a balanced diet and a balanced approach to exercise. Although
we can build muscle by targeting certain areas, we can’t target fat burning
unless we take a whole body approach.
LONGER IS BETTER
You don’t need to spend hours a day working out to get the body you
desire. In fact, your level of fitness has just as much to do with your diet, if
not more. You can get a full, healthy workout in just minutes a day and still
manage a rock star body – if you eat right.
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
Many people don’t like to exercise because it’s hard and it hurts. It
doesn’t have to be this way. In reality, trainers and doctors will tell you that
if it hurts when you exercise, you’re doing it wrong. While discomfort is
normal on occasion, if you feel constant pain when you work out, you risk
seriously injuring yourself. Be strategic and plan a full body work out that
targets all your muscle groups.
Myths Directed Towards Women
Alright ladies, there is a host of myths out there about your bodies, so
these next two are just for you.
DON’T LIFT WEIGHTS BECAUSE IT’LL MAKE yOU BULKy
It is extremely difficult to overload the muscles to the extent it takes to
build the kind of bulk some women fear. If done right, weight lifting can be a
vital part of a balanced workout and will even help you lose weight.
WOMEN NEED A DIFFERENT WORKOUT THAN MEN
Not necessarily. Our bodies, while different in some ways, are funda-
mentally the same whether we are men or women. Although they may be
different shapes and sizes, we all have the same muscles and require the
same, balanced work outs.

The Family ConnectionTime Together
By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, li-
censed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries, a min-
istry for churches and children’s ministry. kerrydrive5@
yahoo.com
My last two articles were about how difficult it
can be to have a loving and joyful relationship with
our kids as they become pre-teens and teenagers.
It all seemed much easier when they were little. As they naturally mature
and become more independent, we lose some of that closeness and con-
nection we once had with them. Some of this is natural and healthy, but too
easily we can lose touch with their lives. It’s important that we don’t let this
happen. The power of knowing and being known is critical to everyone’s
development, confidence, empathy and more. It grounds us. It helps us in
our relationships with others and with God.
To stay in the know with our kids, we need to spend time together. There
are many ways this can be accomplished. Have fun together! What do you
both enjoy? It could be a movie genre that the rest of the family doesn’t like
or the rest of the family isn’t old enough for yet. Go with your teen if its ap-
propriate for them. Maybe the two of you like Thai food and no one else
does. Make a plan to regularly go out to your favorite place together or go
on a mission to find the best Thai. Sports, whether its one you play together
or watch together, is another common ground.
When they were little, we got down on the ground to play with them. We
marriage & family
still need to get on their level by getting into their world. What do your older
kids do that you could do with them? You might not love it. It may never
become a hobby of yours, but can you join them in it in some way? Allow
them to teach you about it, listen and ask questions. Give it a try! Think
about how many new things are kids need to learn and how many times
we’re teaching them. Being skilled at something and teaching us is a great
confidence booster and helps them to see that we never stop learning or
trying. I’m no expert, but I can converse with my son about several games
he enjoys playing...and that matters to him.
Learn something new together. Trial and error, mutual cooperation,
making mistakes and laughing at yourselves, these are all great bonding
experiences, even if you never master the topic. Shared victory if you find
success is great, but it’s not the goal. The focus is on the togetherness. Can
we figure this out? Can we help each other? And if you decide this is not a
hobby or skill for you, that’s fine.
Volunteer together. Find a cause or an organization that you both
believe in and get involved. My son and I recently started serving at a food
pantry together. He stocks the shelves and I either help distribute food or
work at the computer. I love seeing him serve and interact with the other
volunteers there. He’s growing into a young man with a big heart for God
and others. Volunteering together allows us to have a shared experience
where we are contributing in different ways. We are more than mother and
son, we are co-laborers for Christ.

City of Villa Rica’s 8th Annual Fireworks Display Extravaganza rescheduled for Friday, August 30
Due to the weather, the Villa Rica Parks &
Recreation department has rescheduled the
8th Annual Fireworks Display Extravaganza to
Friday, August 30th, on Labor Day Weekend.
As part of the city’s Family Fun Initiative,
The Villa Rica Parks & Recreation Department
invites you to come be a part of this colossal
fireworks display at the V-Plex. The fireworks
presentation will be conducted by East Coast
Pyrotechnics which produces hundreds of
shows each year. Their shows range from
small-scale traditional displays to multi-media,
computer designed and executed pyro musi-
cal presentations.
Music and announcements will begin at
5pm, with opening ceremonies, National An-
them and skydivers arriving between 5pm and
5:30pm.
Opening band, Homegrown Band (above),
will perform from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Home-
grown is a local band from Carrollton. Two
brothers, bassist Kevin Brannon and vocalist/
guitarist Craig Brannon founded the band
in 2005. The band cut its teeth playing the
West Georgia/East Alabama music scene for
half a decade. In early 2011, the brothers and
longtime drummer Jason Cole completed the
band roster along with some old high school
pals and guitarist Nick Ivey. With the current
lineup, Homegrown has created a distinct, rec-
ognizable sound. Their unique brand of col-
laborative songwriting has given them a cata-
log of heartfelt songs about life as they know
it. Together with a country/rock/pop delivery
you won’t find anywhere else, Homegrown
has created a niche for itself in the world of
country music.”
The Springs Band (above) will then per-
form 8pm until the fireworks begin. Nashville
recording artists The Springs won the New
Music Awards “Country New Group of the
Year”, and the next year was nominated along
with Sugarland, Steel Magnolia, and Lady
Antebellum for “Country Group of the Year”.
Originally from South Alabama, this multi-
award winning duet/band has already charted
three releases on the main Music Row Coun-
try charts. Stewart won a Paramount “Star
Search” competition at the age of 16. Holly
made it to the third round of the preliminar-
ies of NBC’s “The Voice” TV show last year.
Their performances are a cross between Ja-
son Aldean and Carrie Underwood, offering
something for everyone making for a crowd
pleasing good time. They have been blessed
to perform their high energy country/southern
rock shows with acts Eric Church, Florida-
Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Alan Jackson, Toby
Keith, Reba, and many other top artists.
Other highlights of the event include he-
licopter rides from 4pm to 9pm, a free BMX
Stunt Show at 6:30pm, 7:30pm and 8:30pm,
hot air balloon tether rides, face painting, bal-
loon art, inflatable slides and so much more.
Delicious food and cold drinks will be avail-
able for purchase through the concession
stand and numerous vendors throughout the
park. This event offers great activities and ex-
periences for the whole family. The crowd is
expected to reach 10,000, so get there early.
Limited parking is available at the park; how-
ever, there are several large parking areas in
the vicinity.

larica.org.

DIRECTORY & GUIDEVaccinate your Children Early
Cobb & Douglas Public Health is now offering Back-to-School im-
munizations and screenings at all four health clinic locations (Marietta,
Douglas, Acworth and East Cobb). Parents of all students should make
sure their children receive the required vaccines and screenings.
As always, children entering kindergarten, or those who are new to
Georgia this school year will need an Immunization Certificate, Georgia
Form 3231 and a Dental, Vision and Hearing Form 3300. Children en-
tering kindergarten may need to get a second dose of varicella (chicken
pox), measles and mumps vaccines and a booster dose of DTap and IPV.
In addition, children entering the 6th grade may need another dose of
chicken pox vaccine, if they have not had chicken pox disease and an-
other dose of MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella). It is recommended
that children 11-12 years of age also receive TDap, Meningitis and HPV.
It is also recommended that high school and college students obtain
a meningitis vaccine that prevents meningococcal disease. The menin-
gococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening illness and the top cause
of bacterial meningitis.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to
receive a vaccination at Cobb & Douglas Public Health. Also, be pre-
pared and bring your child’s immunization records to avoid a longer
wait time. With a personal immunization record in hand, it allows clinic
staff to evaluate and update your records with the new immunizations.
Individuals who need vaccines are encouraged to talk to their primary
care provider or contact Cobb & Douglas Public Health at 770.514.-
2485. Appointments are not required at the Marietta Public Health Cen-
ter to be vaccinated. Back to School hours of operation are Monday
through Friday, 8am to 3:30pm.

WellStar Douglas Hospital has earned an “A” 2013 Spring Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by purchasers of health benefits.
