Newsletter April 2019
Dear friends of Villa Terenzio,
So far 2019 has proved to every bit as busy as we thought it would be at
the end of last year. Within the organisation, the biggest news is undoubtedly the nearing completion of
our new building. More information about the new building can be found in the column to the right….
In any normal year the commissioning of a new building bringing 43 additional care beds would be
significant enough. However, 2019 is also the year that we will rebrand our care services. While the
association is still Italian Aged Care Incorporated, our care services will be rebranded as Villa Terenzio
(residential care); Villa Terenzio Home Care; and Villa Terenzio Day Therapy Centre. This aligns our
services and encourages against the formation of silos in our business streams, as well as using one
consistent new logo.
In the wider industry the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety has had its first 2 series of
hearings in Adelaide. As was the case for all aged care providers, we were invited to make a response to
the Commission providing information in relation to substandard outcomes over the last 5 years, as well
as outlining areas that could be addressed better within aged care, or benefit it. We submitted our
response prior to the deadline, which detailed a small number of episodes that we consider could have
had better outcomes, and some indications of areas that need to be addressed and suggestion of
possible solutions to current issues. The next hearings will likely be commencing 6 May, although their
location remains unknown at the time of publication.
To finish, some farewells and welcomes from me. We welcome Romina as our Executive Assistant at
Villa Terenzio. Her job is very varied, but ultimately she is here to assist me (including keeping me
organised, which is a bit of a challenge!) and provide support for us. We also welcome Thomas the Cat,
who you can read all about on the page opposite. Finally I would like to extend a big welcome to all new
residents and clients, staff members, relatives, and friends to Villa Terenzio and our associated services.
Sadly, we shall be saying farewell to our long-serving Occupational Therapist Claire Webster who will be
retiring at Easter. Having worked with us for well over 20 years, she has headed up the occupational
therapy department which has provided such joy and engagement to our residents. It cannot be
overstated that her work over the last 20 years has been very important to all involved and we wish her
well for retirement. We are fortunate that we have fabulous staff at Villa Terenzio and so we are very
pleased to promote Karen Solomons to be our Lifestyle Coordinator succeeding Claire in leading the
team this area.
With my very best wishes,
Chris Roberts
Welcome from the
Chief Executive Officer
Expanding Villa
Terenzio
We are very excited as we
enter the final phase of our
Stage 1 site redevelopment,
the construction of a new care
facility. At the moment the
scaffolding is coming down
and from the outside it is
looking every bit the stylish
and contemporary care facility
it was designed to be. Inside
the building, the areas are
fabulous with elegant finishes
and very spacious. With some
bedrooms offering external
access to garden areas, and
others having sweeping views,
there are plenty of excellent
features for residents in the
new building. One of the final
pieces of the project is the
landscaping which has now
commenced between the new
building and Houses A and C.
This common use space will
provide a well-planned external
area for all to enjoy.
Just a reminder to residents in
the houses and the nursing
home and their relatives: if you
or your loved one would like to
transfer into the new building,
please only contact Chris
Roberts or Rachel Kogiopoulos
to discuss this further.
Interesting facts about Easter
The biggest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in
2011. It was 10.39 meters long and it weighed a
shocking 7,200 kg.
The art of painting eggs is called pysanka, which
originated in Ukraine.
The term Easter gets its name from Eastre, the Anglo-
Saxon goddess who symbolizes the hare and the egg.
The exchange or giving of Easter eggs actually is a
symbol of rebirth in many cultures.
Are you an ears, arms or tail person? Seventy-
six percent of people eat the ears on the chocolate
bunny first, 5 percent go for the feet and 4 percent for
the tail.
Next to Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy
consuming holiday of the year.
Easter is the oldest Christian holiday
Meet the residents:
Biagio Biagio was born in Sicily in 1941, he arrived in
Australia on 8 May 1972 with the boat “Galilei”. His
journey lasted 24 days but he wished it was longer
as five different women fell in love with him during
this period.
Biagio has always been a successful hairdresser
with 5 salons in Italy and two in Australia. He started
cutting hair when he was only 4 years old. During
his long career he trained 34 apprentices and one of
them managed to become a very successful
hairdresser in America.
Biagio real passion has always been mechanic
though and he used to be very good at fixing cars,
aircon and anything electrical. He has 4 beautiful
daughters and one grandchild called Giorgietto.
He eats anything apart from “wind, fog and smoke”,
as he loves food. His mom used to be a terrific cook
and he is also pretty good in the kitchen.

Care Services Manager On 16 February, Villa Terenzio Residential services had an
unannounced government assessment contact by the Aged
Care Quality and Safety Commission. Three assessors
reviewed our continuous improvement activities, comments and
complaints, information systems, medication management, skin
care, behaviour management and living environment. The visit
went very well and the service met all outcomes. I am sure a lot
of you either spoke to the assessors or saw them looking
around the facility.
As 2019 progresses, a few items are high on my agenda; the
preparation for the new facility and the new Aged Care Quality
Standards, as well as the day to day running of the facility
(education, review of policy, responding to feedback, monitoring
incidents and indicators, ensuring care is a high standard, meals
are right, meetings, chatting with residents, clients and families
and anything else I can do to ensure Villa Terenzio is the best).
The framework for aged care supports quality of care and our
service likes to log some improvements made. I have listed a
few examples of improvements and would love to hear your
feedback or ideas for improvements: patio cover between
Administration building and House D, making puree foods with
shapes, updated hair salon, sun room updated, meals served in
Houses C+D, out of uniform in SCU and adoption of Thomas.
As per usual my door is always open, I will try and help you with
any concerns you may have or feedback and suggestions to
improve Villa Terenzio, Home Care, Independent living Units
and Day Therapy.
Business Services Manager I’m Rachel and I look after the business services and
administration. We enjoy helping your loved ones with their
financial questions and can be available to assist with a
smooth transition into the facility.
Did you know we are a designated gift recipient?
That means you can receive a tax deduction for any
donations made to the facility. As a charity, we operate on
government funding and support from the community. If you
would like to consider donating, please call me to discuss
soon!

including some of the Cabrini Villa residents, have expressed an interest
in moving in when it is opened.

Torta Pasqualina Ingredients
Spinach 1.5kg, Ricotta 500g, 7 eggs, Parmesan 190g, 1/2
Onion, Marjoram tsp (optional), Nutmeg 1/2tsp (optional),
salt and pepper to taste, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 6 ready
made puff pastry sheet
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180OC.Wash and clean your spinach.
Pour some olive oil in the pan with the chopped onion and
spinach, add a dash of water if needed. When all the
greens have wilted, turn off the heat and let cool for at
least 30 minutes.
Squeeze the vegetables in your hands, a little bit at a time,
to eliminate as much of the cooking liquid as you can.
Place the drained greens in another bowl, add the ricotta
cheese, the parmesan, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon salt, freshly
ground pepper and the nutmeg/marjoram (if you like it)
Place the 3 puff pastry sheet at the bottom of the pie dish.
Using a fork make some small holes into the dough, in this
way it doesn’t bubble while cooking.
Transfer the filling to the pan and smooth out the top. With
the help of the back of a spoon, create 5 small wells, one
in the center and four on the sides to host the eggs.
Crack one egg at a time and position it in each well.
Now cover the pie with 3 equal portions/size of puff pastry.
Roll out one at a time, draping it over the filling. Brush with
oil.
Now seal the pie by wrapping the overhang around.
Oil the rolled edge and in between the dough and the pan.
Bake in the oven at 180OC for approximately an hour, until
the crust is deep golden in colour.
Poet’s corner Our gorgeous and talented
Connie loves writing poems;
below is one of her beautiful
creations:
Looking through their eyes
What do you see?
A humbling old woman with a
cane and dribbles when she
eats.
Voice is soft and croaky, she
says softly looking at me her
skin is old and wrinkly and
incontinent.
I was young once like you and
had kids and husband running
around me, as the years went
by to busy with my own, would
never stop to think about life
and to enjoy it.
So look at me now, don’t waste
your years and your youth
enjoy life and youth because
one day…
Someone will be looking at you.
