PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Villanova College Family, Last Tuesday, the Queensland Government announced that the major reforms to senior assessment and tertiary entrance will now begin with Year 11 students in 2019. The decision to delay the introduction of the new system until the current Year 8 students reach Year 11 in 2019 was based on the requirement for additional planning time by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). Our planning for the introduction of the new system to Senior Schooling will continue and our staff are engaging with the new draft syllabuses being released for comment. The full suite of senior syllabuses will be redeveloped in readiness for the new system and it is important our staff keep abreast of the changes and new assessment techniques. The current Overall Position (OP) System, which has served Queensland students and schools well for the past twenty-three years remains in place, and will continue to do so through until 2019. I have confidence that our preparation programs currently in place will ensure our students have every opportunity to achieve their goals. Last Sunday the Fair Go Footy Competition saw many schools from across Brisbane join together for a day of competitive sport and community events, as we continue to recognise the need to build reconciliation through relationships. The generosity of our staff and parents working behind the scenes during the day ensured the event was a great success. Thank you to Mr John Holroyd, Mr John Godwin, Mr Campbell Muir and the many volunteers who gave of their time to support this important event. The staff at Camp Kokoda praised the efforts of our students and staff at the recent Year 11 Leadership Camp. During the three days the students, accompanied by our staff, packed their backpacks and set off into the bush to trek from one camp to the next experiencing a range of challenges along the way. When I visited the camp on Thursday I found the students were still smiling even though they were tired and looking forward to a warm shower and mum’s cooking. It is interesting to see these young men interacting together during the down times without the need for phones, X-box, PlayStation or internet. There is something special about sitting around a fire talking with your mates. Well done to our Tournament of Minds Teams who represented Villanova College at the recent Australasian Pacific Final on the Gold Coast. The students appreciated the opportunity to represent the College and thoroughly enjoyed the challenges presented over the four days. Thank you to the many parents who travelled with the students and to Mrs Maria Mascadri and Mrs Kath Underhill for their organization and support of the teams. Please keep in your prayers members of our community who are dealing with significant health issues at this moment. We especially pray for the family of Ms Maureen O’Dwyer following the death of her mother, Joyce O’Dwyer over the weekend and Mrs Dianne Martin’s father, Robert Haigh who suffered a stroke last week and is currently in hospital on the Gold Coast. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Members of the Villanova College Family,

Last Tuesday, the Queensland Government announced that the major reforms to senior assessment and tertiary entrance will now begin with Year 11 students in 2019.

The students appreciated the opportunity to represent the College and thoroughly enjoyed the challenges

presented over the four days.

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLAs the year is speeding by at a ridiculously hectic pace, I have the opportunity this week to share with you some of the exciting things that have been happening in Junior School curriculum, and how we are constantly looking for the next ‘new’ idea that can inspire and motivate our boys.

The Australian Curriculum is mandated in regard to content and number of hours of implementation required, but how we deliver that content is up to Villanova staff. This year I have had the opportunity to benefit from some amazing professional development on boys’ education and I am currently completing a four-week online course through the International Boys School Coalition to further broaden my knowledge. I will then utilise this new knowledge to ensure that we are doing our best to cater to our boys’ needs.

At Villa, we are extremely proud of building relationships and a sense of community, both of which are strongly recommended for boys. The students at Villanova College are not just a number; we are all a team working together. In building these relationships we work towards fostering creativity, curiosity, initiative, multi-disciplinary thinking and empathy. Circle Time, which happens in Junior School classrooms a few times a week is an ideal opportunity to foster this. Classes get to know each other, talk about issues that are concerning them and how they might solve any problems. This builds mutual respect and makes boys aware of the importance of being their best self.

Other key elements we incorporate into our lessons are:

• Visuals to reinforce auditory learning

• Additional wait and think time

• Manipulatives, real stuff and models

• Repetition of content

• Frequent talk breaks to foster processing

• Ample opportunity for movement

• The use of colour and novelty in instruction

• Opportunities for competition

• The use of humour

21st Century learning is constantly changing and through professional development and social media, we keep abreast of these changes and look to implement them where suitable. The new BYOD program has been extremely successful in Year 5 and the boys have been able to participate in some amazing

new activities because of access to resources. We have started to use Nearpod’s, Kahoots, Google Docs and ClickView, just to name a few. We are now looking forward to all students in the Junior School having equal access to these resources next year.

Project based learning, frequently talked about in education circles, is something I am also keen to explore and implement as assessment in the Junior School. Boys will have the opportunity to drive their own learning and develop life skills that go beyond the content they are researching. This can also tie in with exposing the students to STEAM activities, which tend to be high interest areas for boys.

Villanova is also going through the process of developing our pedagogical framework (the method and practice of teaching) and several staff members, myself included, are off next week to learn more about the Art and Science of Teaching Framework, created by Dr Robert Marzano. We will be learning about a model that ensures quality teaching and balances the necessity of research-based data with the equally vital need to cater for individual students’ strengths and weaknesses.

I’m passionate about ensuring that we don’t just focus on the content, but make sure our boys are being exposed to quality instruction that inspires and motivates them. We want them to come home raving about what they have learnt! Pipedream perhaps, but one I’m motivated to continue working towards, despite knowing from my first hand Mum experience that the communication skills of young men in the car on the way home sometimes leave a lot to be desired!

I strongly believe that the education of your boys is in very safe hands as our staff are all compassionate, caring, motivated and committed to constant learning and improvement. It’s a great place to work and our positivity and passion can only rub off on the boys, so that they love coming to school to be a welcome part of the Villanova community.

Mrs Leanne Addley, Junior School Curriculum Area Leader

QUESTION OF THE WEEK 30th Sunday Ordinary Time, 23rd October

Did you know?

Tax collectors were despised because their job gave them opportunity to cheat the people and because they cooperated with the Roman oppressors. Their contact with the gentiles made them ritually unclean. No wonder this tax collector ‘stood some distance away’.

Question of the Week. Luke 18:9 - 24

“Jesus told a parable to some who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else.”

With which character do you most identify?

MINISTRYFair Go Footy

The sixth running of the Fair Go Football Carnival at Villa Park last Sunday was the most ambitious to date, with 26 officially entered teams and a number of sidelight events. It was pleasing to welcome new schools St Edmund’s College, Brisbane Grammar, Ambrose Treacy and Mount Maria College. After the intensity of the first few rounds, with eight touch footy and two soccer matches all happening at the same time, the authentic spirit of the day crept back into view – seen in the gallery of ring-ins donning the maroon of the Queensland Yourtown team, and in the succession of spontaneous friendly matches. One highlight for me was to see Loreto students work their staff member, Mr Kieran Donnelly into a gap (against Brigidine girls plus staff), then cheer as he scooted in for the try.

The new ‘sidelights’ were also a tremendous success. Mr Ramone Close, who has several years’ experience playing soccer in Europe, ran a “Soccer Stars” clinic for five boys (all 10 and 11) of refugee background, alongside 12 of our Year 5s. He formed a great team with parent Mr Julian Chan and staff member (and dynamic goalkeeper), Mr Brian Morrow. The boys were also united by a shared love of food after their match!

Just prior to the Grand Finals, “The Amazing Relay Race” brought together relay teams of five students from five different schools, with a minimum of two girls per team. What followed was as pure and simple as any relay you see in a primary school yard, and it brought together so many different young people in one heart and mind, no matter the school or the background.

Overall winners on the day were: Mansfield SHS (boys touch), Lourdes Hill College (girls touch) and John Paul College (soccer), with Yourtown Queensland scrambling a win in the Yourtown state of origin. More importantly, the young people who may have felt uncomfortable or out of place were made to feel welcome – chiefly by a host of Villa volunteers: staff, parents, students and past students. It was amazing to see students from as far back as 2008 turn up, as if by homing signal, to erect tents, man the BBQ and enjoy a game of footy. A special mention

must go to Campbell Muir (‘15) who calmly coordinated all the referees across the eight touch footy fields.

It is easy to over-emphasise differences between young people, as if coming from different communities or schools makes us strangers. The key to the Fair Go day is that so many of the diverse young people at schools in the Brisbane area – plus Yourtown from Sydney – come together over a shared, innocent love of sport. The sharing of Villa’s tip-top facilities also helps, as it enables all these young people the experience of playing in such a beautiful setting. Whilst Villa is humbly proud to host the event, there is an even more humble team of “sugar daddies” (medium old boys) who provide the funding and support to allow events like this to occur, under the aegis of the FairGo Australia Foundation.

Work and Welcome

The Work and Welcome scheme is a system whereby a number of Villa staff give up part of their salary to pay for a person of refugee background to have a job at Villanova in Term 4. This year we welcome Mr Salah Eldeen as our Work and Welcome employee, working mainly in Grounds and Maintenance. Salah is from South Sudan and was granted refugee status in 2012. He is a very positive person and a great worker. In fact, if your son is playing cricket next term, the team bag was packed by Salah. He passed his light rigid driving test on Monday, after lessons from Mr Peter Wall and other staff members and is very keen to stay in Brisbane next year, hopefully finding work in the construction area.

1200 km Charity Bike Ride for Kids

Last term the YAYM (Middle School Ministry) students raised $1000 to boost Year 7 student Maxwell Shearer’s support of the 1200 km bike ride, raising money to help fight children’s cancers. The ride was successfully completed over the weekend, with Maxwell joining the riders on the leg to Ipswich. Dr Andy Moore (Director of the Queensland Children’s Tumour Bank) made a point of thanking the Villa students for their generosity.

MUSICPreparations for 2017

Audition schedules for 2017 ensembles have been posted outside the Music Office, sent via skoolbag, and emailed to all students and parents involved. Please be aware that there may be some alteration to times – updates will be sent at the end of each day for the next. Stay updated, check these forums, and help us help the students through this process. We expect to be able to finalise ensembles by Monday, 7th November.

Information regarding continuing enrolments in the Performance Music Program will be sent home over the next week. This package will also include our draft performance calendar for 2017 so that you may start preparing your diaries for the coming year.

Thank you all for your patience and support as we work through this busy period.

Live and Wired and Chamber groups at Lourdes Hill College and Loreto College

Thank you to all staff and students involved in these performances last weekend. As usual, our students performed well and were great ambassadors for the College. I would also like to extend my thanks to those families that assisted in ferrying students and who came and supported our boys at these public events.

Strings and Choirs at the Cathedral

Our annual String and Choral extravaganza is happening THIS SUNDAY, 23rd October with our choral and string ensembles performing in St Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane. Students will be required at the Cathedral by 1.30pm and the concert will commence around 2.30pm. All musicians and families are invited to an afternoon tea on the green to the East of the Cathedral after the concert. Please refer to our note sent in September regarding the requirement that all students bring a plate to share.

We are still seeking some assistance from the parents of string students in preparation for the afternoon tea which will be provided to all attendees on Sunday afternoon. Should you wish to participate in this aspect of the event, please leave your name and number with the Music Office (3394 5691) and we will ensure you are contacted.

Big Event 2016

This year we will be hosting a combined big event with students from Villanova College, Loreto College, and the Young Conservatorium. Villanova produced another outstanding weekend of results against Padua, winning the day in basketball quite convincingly and sharing the results in tennis. At this stage Villa enjoys a good lead in the basketball aggregate. With one round remaining we must be on our guard and finish off the season well against Iona to secure the desired results in both tennis and basketball.

Please be aware that volleyball and cricket trials will be on the week beginning Monday 31st October. All students have been given a sign-on form which is due this Friday, 21st Oct. An invitation is extended to all members of our community who wish to assist the sports program by taking on a coaching, managing and/or officiating role for the various sports we have on offer in 2017. Any interested persons are asked to complete the nomination form found on the website. In particular, we are keen to find those who wish to coach cricket or volleyball in 2017 as trials are commencing shortly.

The first draft of Villanova’s 2016 AIC Track and Field Team has been finalised and all involved are looking forward to competing at the annual AIC Track and Field Championships on Tuesday 25th October and Wednesday 26th October at the Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre (QSAC).

The team’s preparation has been encouraging and we are looking forward to a great carnival. Unfortunately, not everyone who has trained will get the chance to compete on Tuesday or the Wednesday of next week. However, we believe all those who have trained are important members of the 2016 AIC Track and Field Team, so all squad members who have trained throughout the season are invited to attend the Carnival with the competing team as a spectator/reserve on the Wednesday.

Villanova Tennis Championship

During weekly training sessions over the past two weeks our tennis managers/coaches have commenced the process of selecting players to compete in the Villanova Tennis Championship. These Year Level Champions are required to attend the Villanova Tennis Championships at Morningside Tennis Centre next Wednesday 26th October from 4pm - 7pm to contest the Championship. The schedule for the day is listed below.

Please be aware that the ‘Year Level Champion’ does not necessarily receive the ‘Best and Fairest’ award for that particular year level. The Best and Fairest award is given based on performance over the entire tennis season, which includes not only performance but conduct as a player in each team.

AFAS ELDERS HEAD TO PHILIPPINES

Over forty bags of cement, at $8.00 a bag, will be used to lay the foundation of a ‘drying house ’on Kinatarcan Island. This cement will arrive a few weeks before the nine Villanova workers arrive, via the local punt on 28th November.

The cement and the other building materials are required to be purchased on the main island of Cebu and transported to Kinatarcan on a larger boat at the cost of $1,225.

The Villa folk will live in the parish dormitory during their six days of work on the island. Meals will be consistent with the local diet but the Aussies will take their own bottled water. The island does not have a system of piped water.

To buy the materials required, transport them to Kinatarcan and meet all construction costs, our AFAS Elders require $7500. On page 10 of the newsletter is a copy of the costing of all materials that are required to complete the AFAS Elders project-Hot House this November/December. If you would like to donate, donations as little (eg 1 kg of tie wire - $2.00 or 1 bag of cement -$8.00) or as much as you would like (eg 40 bags -$320.00) are much appreciated. EVERY LITTLE BIT MAKES A DIFFERENCE! Financial contributions can be made at:

Account Name: Villanova College

BSB: 064-107

Account number: 00900613

Reference: AFAS Elders

When making a deposit/transfer, please put ‘AFAS Elders’ in the description as well as what item you are donating plus your name.

CHINA TOURThe China Tour will forever be one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The mixture of such a beautiful culture full of rich history, combined with the technology and architecture of the future, China made for an excellent holiday destination as well as a great interactive learning experience. It was easy to immerse oneself within the culture we were surrounded by in the older areas of Xi’An and Beijing, as well as being able to use the words and phrases we had been taught in class to speak with the locals. That being said, we ended up repeating the words “Bùyào” (don’t want) over and over to the hundreds of street vendors trying to sell to us. The China Tour was an experience I would repeat if I could as I would have loved to spend more time at some of the sites.

Ramzi Matta, Year 11 student

first in the 13 to 17 age group with seven firsts and one second in the events, as well as, equal first overall out of all the teams in all age groups for the day plus third place presentation. A great achievement, well done Rhys!

Congratulations to Scott Boyde (’11) who has been selected in the Kookaburra’s squad to represent Australia in the upcoming Trans-Tasman series in New Zealand, followed by the International Festival of Hockey in Melbourne against hockey giants such as the UK and India. Well done Scott!
