Hello everyone,

The beautiful painted lady on the front cover was captured by Jane Baker. It was sunning itself on a self-seeded verbena by our carport.

Included this month on page 19, is the report on the public meeting held in Hollesley Village Hall on 14 September regarding the change in prison population.

Look out for the notice about the change of opening times for many of the cafes etc. in the area. There is a also a quiz in aid of SAR, information on page 23, and details of the Hollesley Villlage Hall AGM on page 9 and many more notices. Enjoy!

Ramsholt Quay 20 Feb 1945 - Little Davy II - Part I

When you see the beauty and tranquillity to be found by the little quay at Ramsholt, it’s difficult to imagine the tragedy which occurred there in 1945 when seven young American airmen lost their lives. Today the only remaining evidence of this wartime catastrophe is a small plaque on the wall of the ‘Ramsholt Arms’ and a framed picture inside. Here is part 1 of the tragic story.

It was just after 9am on the morning of 20 February 1945: the weather was cold, misty and overcast and Shottisham locals, young aircraftsman Arthur Reeve 22, home on leave and his old friend Arthur Hunt, had arranged to go fishing in the Deben just off Ramsholt Quay. The tide was still running out: for their purposes they wanted a slack tide. As they got things ready, Arthur Hunt looked inland towards Waldringfield and saw flames above the river wall towards Stonner Point. In a few seconds a B-17 Flying Fortress turned towards Ramsholt opposite Kirton Creek with a serious engine fire.

Arthur Hunt of Shottisham, aged 50

The pilot Lt. Frederick Stindt and his Co-Pilot 2nd Lt. Irwin Roth realised the on-board fire extinguishers had failed to stop the fire and prepared to ditch their aircraft in the shallower waters of the River Deben. This was the crew’s 18th mission together and they were well rehearsed in crash landings, having already left three previous B-17 aircraft in Allied Occupied France, after crash landings due to significant ack-ack gunfire damage sustained during bombing raids over enemy

territory. This one would be different though: it was on water.

T/Sgt Jewel K Haynes top turret gunner and flight en-gineer, braced himself be-hind the co-pilot’s seat so he could read out speed and altitude during their descent. Only minutes had passed since they had taken off from Debach Air-

field, just north west of Woodbridge, and he was still raising the landing gear when he too noticed the fire in No 3 engine. Lack of altitude ruled bailing out and anyway with a full fuel and bomb load an immediate decision was required; any delay may result in their aircraft crashing in, or near to, Alderton Village.

Other crew members made their way to the relative safety of the radio room amidships, once the decision to ditch had been taken.

Meanwhile, the two Arthurs in Shottisham had jumped behind a storage boat for some shelter, in case of a collision with the Quay, but as they looked up the aircraft ditched in the middle of the river, about 150 yards from them. They immediately realised they needed to row out to the motor boat they used for fishing, if they were going to help survivors. Arthur Hunt was an experienced mariner, spending most of his life at sea, losing the use of one lung after an action at sea off Naples during the First World War, so the younger Arthur

rowed as he’d never rowed before. As they scrambled from dingy to motorboat they prayed, Oh please God let the engine start first time. By now they could hear the call of a survivor; the engine did start first time and away they went, to a hand sticking out of the water and a muffled cry.

On hitting the water B-17 43-38568 had pitched forward, smashing out the glass of the bombardier’s front turret, forced water up and into the aircraft, and knocked T/Sgt Haynes through a partition and onto his back in the bomb- bay. As he recovered his thoughts, the aircraft was already sinking fast. Head-ing back to the cockpit, he realised 2nd Lt Roth had escaped through the cock-pit window, but Lt. Stindt was having difficulty releasing his chair chute. Now underwater, by some miracle, they both somehow managed to escape the aircraft. Sadly the rest of the crew were not so fortunate and seven brave young American airmen perished, trapped inside the radio room.

When the Arthurs reached the crewman, they could not get him into the boat as his clothing and equipment were waterlogged. However, holding him by his harness, they managed to get him back to the Quay where they left him propped up and vomiting up salt water – this was T/Sgt Haynes. They noticed another crew member scrambling towards the shallow water and mud. Arthur Hunt shouted at him to go to the walkable edge which would enable him to make his way to the Quay – this was Lt. Stindt. Leaving them safely together, they headed back towards the stricken aircraft hoping to find other survivors.

Our Vicar writes

Dear Friends

Rather than just exploring ancient history, one of the aims of my recent sabbat-ical was to consider whether Celtic spirituality had anything relevant to offer in the challenges facing us in the 21st century. I’m glad to say that I found there were some inspirations for our times. One of these was the practice of the Celts of simple, sustainable living, in small communities, offering hospitality and healing.

We are fortunate in this area that we do live in small, caring communities but ‘homeless-ness’ can still be a problem – not necessarily literally but in the sense of not feeling ‘at home’ anywhere, of being excluded or unwelcome. One of the most poignant images of my sabbatical – and one that kept recurring at different times – was that of the ‘homeless Jesus’ pictured here.

True hospitality is not an invitation to adopt the lifestyle of the host; it requires an openness to change; space for the unexpected. But at the same time, hospi-tality has boundaries; it does not offer limitless space and we should not always feel obliged to say ‘yes’. The Latin roots of the word ‘hospitality’ (‘host’, ‘guest’, ‘stranger’, ‘power’) tell us something about the two-way nature of hospitality and about its risky nature. For the encounter to be transformative requires an element of risk, of strangeness; the guest may become the host and vice versa.

These next few weeks offer several opportunities to experience and offer hospi-tality. Every 4th Sunday at Hollesley Church our breakfast discussion group Café Sundae begins with the song There’s always room at our house; Hollesley Community Café reopens in its familiar format on 13 October; there’s an open invitation to Boyton Harvest Supper (see below) on 27 October and then on Saturday 4 Nov. All Saints’ Hollesley is holding an Open House and Gift Day offering refreshments, light lunches and an opportunity to find out about planned improvements to the church building.

I look forward to seeing you at some (or all!) of these events.

Abi and Micky would like to thank everyone who supported their recital in August at Hollesley church...it was a lovely afternoon, and good to see so many of Abi’s pupils playingin the first half. The refreshments were excellent. Thanks to all who helped with those, and the grand total of £500 was raised for Cancer Research...great result!

Dear Readers,

We are your new Village Voices reporters for this school year, our names are Imogen and Ellie. We have just started Year 6 which is our final year at Hollesley Primary School.

In our first report we are going to introduce ourselves to you, and tell you a bit about what we like and what we hope to do in the future.

We are both very sporty. Ellie likes lots of sports:

Netball

Football

Gymnastics

Swimming

Imogen also likes sports:

Football

Netball

Dodgeball

Rounders

Both of us enjoy writing. Ellie enjoys writing stories and Imogen enjoys description. We both look up to Mabel and Harry for writing remarkable reports last academic year. We hope you enjoy reading our reports of all the spectacular events that happen at Hollesley Primary School. We have been very excited to write in the Village Voices for a long time. We are currently 10 and nearly 11.

As we get older we hope to fulfil our dream jobs. Imogen would like to be a vet, work at a zoo or something that involves animals and Ellie would like to be a brain surgeon or a vet (she can’t choose).

We hope you enjoyed reading our first report.

The Hollesley Play Commissioners’ update

We met again during the holidays to continue on the project to replace the playground equipment on Hollesley rec. We agreed that a survey need to be carried out and we decided to use the one that has been approved by the government organisation, Play England. It is very important that we find out what favourite things children like to do and where their favourite places to play are. This will help us to get the right equipment for the playground.

We also approved a new logo. This was a mix of two designs (by Tallulah Saunders and Max Willsmore). Do you like it?

The next stage is to distribute the surveys. All children and young people living in the area (which

includes Boyton, Bawdsey, Sutton, Hollesley, Shottisham and Alderton) can do the survey. There are three age groups that we have to include: 3-6, 7-11 and 12-14 yrs. So we have contacted the local pre-schools and primary schools to seek their help. We hope that those aged between 12 and 14 will access the survey on line. You can access the survey by typing in https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3WCDT2L. We are also setting up a web page which will be on the Hollesley Parish Council website.

We hope that if all goes to plan, the survey will be completed before half term and we are meeting then to analyse the results. New members of the group are always welcome .. you need to be aged between 7 and 11yrs.

Ring Gerry 411376 or Judi 411405 for more information.

Letters

Dear Editor

I saw this little bird in the garden - thought it was a Cuckoo but they don’t have a black stripe down their back, this did have a quite distinct one. That in my estimate makes it a Wryneck. Quite a thrill if I’m right. I took the picture at about 8.25am today, 26 September. The photograph is not of the best quality, but it was taken through the double glazing as I couldn’t risk creeping outside. A shame the beak is obscured by grass and there isn’t a sparkle in its eye, but I think my ID is right but if you care to print and ask the more knowledgeable of your readers for their opinion I’m sure they will put me right.

Mike Fox

Dear Mike,

It is a Eurasian Wryneck. The bird is renowned for its wonderful plumage, and its habit of twisting its neck through 180 degrees (‘awry’) which is where its name comes from. It is related to the woodpeckers, and spends a lot of time on the ground feeding on ants etc. Because its camouflage is so good, the bird relies on it and often doesn’t move when danger threatens, which is why it is caught so often by cats. It is a migrant, and your bird is heading for Africa.

Dear Editor

Our grandson William Lennard recently graduated from UEA Norwich, which we were lucky enough to attend. He was conferred with the degree of Bachelor of Arts with second class honours (division one) in history. The whole family is immensely proud of him as he worked very hard and determinedly whilst there.

William is the second son of Carl and Fiona, brother of Matthew and Isabell. He started school at Bawdsey primary then went on to Farlingaye. He is now doing his PGCE, training to be a teacher, hoping to teach history at a school in East Anglia once he has finished.

Hollesley Parish Council Housing Seminar Are you or a member of your family interested in housing in Hollesley and the surrounding villages? If you are, you really need to attend a Housing Seminar on Thursday 25 October, anytime between 4.00pm and 8.00pm.

The event will be run by SCDC and representatives from Gateway to Home-choice. They will tell people how to get on the official housing list (whether you are interested in renting or buying) and how to keep track of your application.

Update on a path between the Water Tower and Duck Corner Following the overwhelming response to our survey regarding a footpath between Duck Corner and the Water Tower, HPC spoke to SCC Highways. A senior engineer explained the four options we had:

- A shared cycle/footpath beside the road - A private path behind the existing hedge with entrances on to the highway - A 40 mph ‘buffer’ zone between the two points - Better signage to warn of pedestrians and cyclists.

Both options 1 and 2 would be the most expensive but more importantly would require the acquisition of land. Unfortunately, we can now report that the procurement of the required land is not possible as the land owners do not wish to part with it. HPC fully understand and accept this decision and will now explore options 3 and 4 more thoroughly.

Speeding There has been a noticeable increase in the speed of traffic in the village over the summer months. The Community Speedwatch Group are often out but if you know of a regular offender please try to make a note of their registration plate and we will ask the SNT to keep a special eye out for them.

Could your group or organisation benefit from a grant from the Parish Council? By virtue of Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Parish Council is permitted to give grants to groups and organisations who provide a service or benefit to the community. If you are interested in applying for a 2019 grant please complete the application form found on our web site at www.hollesley.suffolk.cloud/council-documentation/parish-council/grants and send it to the Clerk by 31 October.

Changes at Hollesley Bay PrisonPlans to admit sex offenders for the first time On 14 September over 130 villagers crowded into Hollesley Village Hall for a public meeting organised by Hollesley Parish Council. Prison Governor Declan Moore was welcomed along with Gerry Bathe who had been invited to chair the meeting.

Gov. Moore provided a detailed response to the questions raised by the council. He explained that the decision to admit MCOSO (Men Convicted of Sex Offences) had been made over the last three years, largely without his input. The decision makers were well aware of Hollesley Bay’s location, the public road running through, and the houses and Primary School nearby. Accommodation was required for 4000 MCOSOs across the country.

The Governor said that there are far fewer absconders at the prison than in years past, now less than ten per year and who swiftly leave the area. Those who come following assessment are further assessed and closely monitored. MCOSOs are often middle aged and educated, different from other prisoners. If they are accommodated together they are less likely to be victimised by other prisoners. The trade union has responded positively and there are hardly any

concerns from staff who will receive training. Specialist staff will also deal with any problems that may arise. More work and activities will be provided within the prison as MCOSOs will not be accepted so readily working out in the community.

Many questions were asked, about other similar prisons, and worries expressed about safety. Gov. Moore was unable to answer all the questions. In particular why wasn’t the community consulted? That’s how the government works! he said. Mr Moore announced that he was leaving Hollesley Bay forthwith, after 12 years and will take over Norwich Prison on Monday 17 September.

Hollesley Parish Council will consider measures we can take. You can sign the petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/227596 or write to MP Therese Coffey, Rory Stewart, Minister of Justice, Andrew Reid, County Councillor and Christine Block, District Councillor.

We were lucky again this year with some decent sunny weather. Good sales were made by Cream Teas, Chutneys and Jams, Cake Stall, Produce, White Elephant, Books, Smash the Plates and Car Parks.

We thank Micky McBurnie and Tim Sadler for all the music and also Finlay Garages, Ufford Park Hotel, the Hair Sanctuary at Rendlesham, and Deben Inns for their support for the draw. Lots of fun came from the Booze Barrow, Tombola, Marbles, Treasure Hunt, Twinkle’s Birthday and Shooting.

We are again grateful to several people for taking many unsold items and delivering them to other charities.

The day raised over £1,400 for the church and village hall and extra thanks must go to everyone who made the day happen, including those who helped set up tents and dismantled everything at the end of the day!

Thanks to John Carpmael for all the photos!

and lots more fun was had ..........

This is the month for apples in the garden. The drought failed to make them all drop and they are small but we are at the moment revelling in ‘Suffolk Pink’, ‘Red Millers Seedling’ and ‘Maclean’s Favourite’, all beautifully crisp, early apples with a red glow. ‘Suffolk Pink’ has a pink flecked surface and pink flesh and can be found in Waitrose.

I have been putting a basket of apples out for visitors to sample and they disappear, so they must be quite good. The later varieties tend to suffer from people trying them when they are unripe, and I find discarded victims with one bite lying about under the trees.

The orchard will have been cut by now ready for next year’s spring flowers. The seeds will have fallen and, as wild flowers like poor soil, it is important to remove all the cut grass so that the soil doesn’t get too many nutrients.

DAFT NewsDeben Animal Fundraising Team (DAFT), based in Hollesley, raises money for Suffolk Animal Rescue. Come and join us! Thank you to the church community for inviting us back for a second year to give a talk on SAR at the Pet Service at Shottisham on 19th August. Our ‘DAFTER’, Sarah B, did a cracking job of explaining the charity’s ethos. Below is a very edited down version of her talk: What's so special about SAR? SAR help animals that most other rescue centres would give up on. They take in dogs from the pound whose 7 days are up and who are at risk of being euthanased. They take in elderly and sick dogs and cats who need expensive treatment, feral cats, and dogs with behavioural issues. Max, a German Shepherd rescued from the pound. Bad things had happened to him. Serious fear/food aggression, terrified of going through gates, scared of cars, afraid of people touching his collar, probable brain damage from being hit over the head, congenital hip problems. SAR paid for one hip op. and kept him for over a year until Max found his forever home, where he lived happily for 5 years with people who accepted him as he was and didn’t push him into being something else.Poppy, a 13-year old Staffy, with Cushings disease, overweight and neglected. The owner died. No other rescue would take her as she was too old, sick and expensive to treat. SAR found her a loving home where she spent the final 9 months of her life getting all the love and affection she deserved. Leo, GS cross with serious behaviour issues. Probably brought up with no training. Now in a wonderful home at a stables where he is receiving specialist help from a dog behaviourist and has lots of space and time to learn to be a dog. Teddy, a Lurcher found abandoned, starving in a field. If not for SAR he would have been another pound dog. He’s now happy and full of beans in his new loving home. Chase, a Staffy/Husky X with a torn cruciate ligament. The owner couldn’t afford treatment. The future looked bleak. SAR stepped up to save him and fund-raised for his surgery and hydrotherapy (£2,800). He’s now on the road to recovery and looking for his forever home. Feral cats. Many rescues won’t touch feral cats and, if they do, will only trap, neuter them and release them back into the wild. When these cats get old or sick or injured there is no way of alleviating their suffering. SAR believes this isn’t good enough! So in addition to this, SAR invests an enormous amount of time and patience in trying to gradually tame these cats and find them homes. Recently SAR has trapped many cats and kittens from the Shell garage by the Orwell Bridge, Felixstowe Docks, BT at Martlesham, Great Blakenham industrial estate and many farms. In the last year SAR rehomed 150 cats, 43 dogs and

22 ‘small furries’. The vet’s bill was £29,000!Suffolk Animal Rescue, 5 Cherry Tree Lane, Debenham, Stowmarket, IP14 6QT. Tel: 01728 860937 www.suffolkanimalrescue.org [email protected]

Suffolk Churches Ride and Stride This sponsored event took place on Saturday 8 September and the money raised is shared between the church of your choice and The Historic Churches Trust.

Thank you to those who took part in any way either by walking, cycling, giving your time to be ‘on duty’ in the church to welcome our visitors and especially those who sponsored us. At the time of going into print, the amount raised was approximately £350.00, to be divided between the Trust and Hollesley Church.

I cycled and visited 22 churches - the sausage rolls provided by Bromeswell Church were absolutely delicious and well worth any effort involved.

Joan Butcher St. Andrew’s Church, Boyton

The church was open from 9am until after 5pm last Saturday, 8 September, in time to start Rev. Ruth on her way, walking the seven churches in our group. Ruth had a good day weather-wise. However, the church was manned throughout the day by volunteers to welcome riders from other villages and communities taking part and we had a steady trickle of visitors through the day but nobody else walking!

Our area organiser, Greg Spray, called in and we could show him our unique staircase up to the Tower which was on show all weekend.

We think we have the record for continuous involvement in the Bike Ride through one of our parishioners, Dr Fred Stentiford, who has cycled for Boyton Church since the Suffolk Churches Sponsored Bike ride started in 1982. Sadly, over the past few years he has been the only village representative participating. We missed you this year Fred, but hopefully will see you next year when other Boyton villagers may be persuaded to take part!

While attendances have been dropping, it is hoped that with the introduction of walkers being involved, more participants may take part in the future.

The scheme is coming along well and we hope to be able to launch it as you receive your Village Voices for October. We have about 30 volunteers from the three villages which is fantastic.

We will post our special telephone number on the Grapevine and on Noticeboards for you to call if you need our help or advice.

Households will also receive a fridge magnet with our number to call. You will be able to speak to someone or leave a message for us to phone you back. We are not an emergency service, but can usually arrange for someone to help or advise you.

Perhaps you can’t reach up to change a light bulb or a smoke alarm battery. Or you have an appointment for the doctor and no transport. Perhaps you live on your own and would like someone to chat to over a cup of tea. You may need a babysitter or someone to collect your child from school if you can’t be there. There may be a form to fill in which you don’t understand. Do you need to be taken to the station to catch a train? Does your dog need to be taken out when you can’t go? Do you need extra help after coming home from hospital?

These are just a few examples!

We would like to thank those that came to the Working Tea & Coffee morning held on the 1st September at the Community Garden. We raised £28.20 through donations and the cakes donated were lovely. We also managed to get a few things in the garden weeded and dead headed ready for Autumn’s arrival. Remember the garden is there for all the Community to enjoy, so when passing please pop in, take a look and feel free to offer suggestions or lend a hand in keeping it maintained.

Deben swimOn 14th August, with friends and family giving a big cheer, Linda and I set off from Ramsholt Quay to swim to Woodbridge in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Having chosen a day with big spring tides, we set off just after 9am when we were sure that the tide had turned. With our support dinghy leading the way, we seemed to

reach Waldringfield What an achievement!in no time. The Sailing Club safety boats very kindly ushered us safely past the racing dinghies. The going got harder past Methersgate Quay, the cold and fatigue starting to take effect. We were thrilled to reach our finish point at the Deben Yacht Club in just under 3 hours, where friends from school and family were

Cheery support for the swimmers cheering us on. We were very grateful to use the showers at DYC! We’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone for all their support and kind donations to this service. We've raised over £3,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Nature note:Last of the summer nectar

Despite that spell of very hot weather – now a distant memory as autumn closes in on us – it was rather a mixed summer for butterflies. We had the usual range of common species, but the showier ones, like peacock, red admiral and painted lady, seemed to be far fewer in numbers than usual. There was

one nice exception, though – a much more dis-creet and unobtrusive local speciality, the grayling. Graylings are very easy to overlook. For a start they don’t feed on flowers as much as other butterflies do, but are more likely to be found sipping at the sticky resin on fence posts and bark. They also have the habit of resting on paths to catch the sun and you usually first see

them when they fly up in front of and settle again a bit further on. But they are still hard to spot since they always have their wings closed while at rest and are beautifully camouflaged to blend in with their surroundings, even angling their wings to avoid throwing any shadow. The undersides of the wings, which is all you ever really see, are barred with a subtle combination of grey and tan, in broken lines to break up the outline, and it is only when they take off that you see a flash of the orange markings and the eye-spots, as in my lucky photo.

The Latin specific name is semele and this ties in with the grayling’s rather smoky appearance. Semele in the Greek myth was seduced by Zeus, King of the Gods, who had a fair bit of form in this respect. Zeus’s wife, Hera, got wind of this – they always do in the end – and tricked Semele into demanding that Zeus prove who he really was. So, he reluctantly sparked off a little lightning as a demo. But of course, it’s fatal for mere mortals to look upon a god and Semele literally went up in smoke.

The grayling is a late summer butterfly, seen well into Septem-ber. We’ve also had some end-of-season visits from the spectacular humming-bird hawk- Hummingbird hawkmothmoths, which look for all the world like real humming-birds, siphoning the nectar from flowers with a long, retractable tongue. Amazingly, they are migrants who cross the sea from the continent, and even more amazingly some at least of them migrate back again in the autumn. They have their own folklore, in this case a modern story that a small party of them was seen flying over the English Channel on 6 June 1944 to bring the glad news of D-Day. Well, the tale deserves to be true and let’s hope they return next year as well.

As our September meeting is after the Village Voices deadline, a write up about that one will have to wait until next time. We have had two events though which are certainly worth a mention.

In July, our Summer fundraiser was an afternoon tea, held at the village hall to help raise money for the new heating system. It’s now installed - we just have to learn to operate it! Thanks go to all members who baked and helped on the day and of course villagers and locals who came along to support the event. It’s very much appreciated.

On 15 August, members and friends were invited to another afternoon Summer social with Rosemary Busby for her annual event. Beforehand, she had said that the hot weather had taken its toll on her garden but it still looked as beautiful as ever, and it was a lovely spot to enjoy good company, the treats on offer, as well as a quiz and bring-and-buy. £180 was raised, and this is to be shared between three good causes - The Cancer Ward at Ipswich Hospital, The Air Ambulance and a charity helping those with Down's Syndrome.

2019 will be Suffolk East Federation’s Centenary (SEFWI) and we are already thinking of ways to celebrate. Four separate choirs are rehearsing around Suffolk and will come together as a massed WI choir during the year - Women Who Jam. The musical definitions of jam are: informal music event, social gathering, communal practice session, soundtrack to life, so an appropriate choice of title! They are hoping for at least 100 voices and I know that several Hollesley members will be involved. Our own celebrations in Hollesley will be taking shape throughout the next few months, so watch this space - it’s going to be a busy year.

It is lovely to be able to report that several new members have joined us, so a warm welcome to them and, of course, we would love a few more. Contact details in Village Voices.

From our Country KitchenFig Chutney (from Nigel Slater)

I’ve made this chutney for a couple of years. It keeps very well and is good with cheese. I used pickling vinegar instead of malt and cider, which worked just as well. You need:-

250 g soft brown sugar 1 kg figs 150 ml malt vinegar 150 ml cider vinegar 250 g onions, finely chopped 250 g sultanas 1 tsp salt 1 tsp allspice 1/2 tsp black peppercorns, cracked 1 tsp coriander seeds, cracked.

Chop the figs, removing any tough stalks, then put them in a large stainless steel or enamelled pan. Add the vinegars, onions, sultanas, salt and spices, then bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 minutes until the onions and figs are soft.

Stir in the sugar. Place over a low heat, bring slowly to the boil, then turn the heat down so the chutney bubbles gently. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes, with the occasional stir to stop it sticking, until the mixture is thick and jam like. Bottle while hot and seal. This quantity makes 2 large jars.

Peninsula 2018 Poppy Project

War Horse, Saturday 1 September

What a wonderful evening we had at our Open Air showing of War Horse on Saturday 1 September!! The weather was absolutely perfect and the evening began with everyone happily tucking into their picnics accompanied by some great World War I music.

We then held a raffle with some amazing prizes.

At sundown, we were treated to some beautiful poetry readings by Blake Morrison and then the Main Event began. War Horse is even more poignant and emotional watched in a Suffolk field, wrapped in warm blankets under an amazing starlit sky. And the haunting rendition of The Last Post and Reveille by Melissa Hawkins after the film was a fitting end to a lovely evening.

We are pleased to announce that we raised an incredible £4,600 in aid of the RBL Suffolk Poppy Appeal and the Suffolk Punch Trust.

With thanks to everyone who so kindly donated raffle prizes.
