No matter if the sun is shining, the rain pouring or the wind howling, these all-year brownies are just the job with an afternoon tea or coffee or a delicious dollop of ice-cream.
Brownies For All Seasons
1 Pre-heat oven to 180°c (160° fan)
or gas mark 4
2 Line a 20cm x 20cm baking tray
leaving enough baking parchment
around each edge to help lift the
brownie out of the tray.
3 Roughly chop the butter and put into
a medium sized bowl. Add the good
chocolate (broken into pieces) and
place the bowl over a saucepan of
hot water on the stove or cover with
clingfilm and microwave on full power
for two minutes until melted. Stir and
leave to cool to room temperature.
4 In a separate bowl, sieve flour and
cocoa together. Place to one side.
5 Break eggs into a large bowl, add
sugar and whisk until doubled in
size and light and creamy.
6 Carefully add the cooled chocolate
and butter mix using a spatula to
fold it into the egg and sugar taking
care not to knock out too much of
the air that you have put in.
7 Re-sift the flour and cocoa,
gently tip into the bowl and stir
until lightly mixed.
8 Add chopped chocolate
(or raspberries, raisins or
whatever you are using)
9 Carefully pour the mixture into
your lined tin and bake in centre
of oven for 25 minutes.
10 Check to see if it’s cooked by
shaking the tin slightly. If the brownie
wobbles in the centre cook for
a further 5 minutes or until a light
crust forms on top.
11 Remove from oven and leave to
cool in the tray on a wire rack.
12 Remove from tray and cut to
desired shape and size.
13 Finished brownies will keep in air
tight container for two weeks or
up to a month in the freezer.
INGREDIENTS185g unsalted butter
185g of good quality chocolate
(70% cocoa is best)
85g plain flour
40g cocoa powder
50g white chocolate
50g milk chocolate
3 large eggs
275g golden sugar
The following recipe makes about 10 normal sized brownies. Feel free to
experiment by substituting some of the block chocolate for raspberries or
raisins, maybe marshmallows or some nuts – anything you fancy really.
In the winter you could add a touch of whisky or brandy to the mix.
Here is my basic recipe:

Moving to a retirement village is a big decision. Not only are you moving house, perhaps downsizing from a family home that you’ve lived in for many years, but you’re embracing a new lifestyle and becoming part of a vibrant community.
The idea behind Village Life is to show you what life is like
at Lynwood Village, introduce you to some of our key
people and share some useful insights and information.
On the following pages you’ll find out what goes on at our
restaurant, Prescott’s, meet some of our concierge team
and discover what activities and excursions you can enjoy
when living at Lynwood. We’ve got some useful articles
on why it’s never too late to exercise, with valuable advice
from our head physiotherapist, as well as top tips for
downsizing and moving if you decide that this is indeed the
place for you!
Here at Lynwood the homes are beautiful, spacious and
well-designed but that’s not why people move here. They
move here for company, support and to live somewhere
that makes daily life easier. The first step is to come and
look round.
We’d be delighted to show you what an
amazing place Lynwood Village is and why
it’s an award-winning retirement village.

Lunch SpecialsEvery day our wonderful head chef and their team
create a delicious, freshly cooked hot lunch. Each
day there are two options to choose from, all freshly
cooked and served with a variety of fresh vegetables.
Roast dinner with all the trimmings is Wednesday’s
treat and on Fridays it’s fish and chips! For a lighter
option try the salad bar, a panini or jacket potato.
On Sundays you’ll have to book if you want a table
at Prescott’s Roast Club, which is super popular with
residents, many of whom are joined by family and
friends for the occasion.
A la carte eveningsOur a la carte evening menu is served in the
restaurant where you can join friends and enjoy
a glass of wine at the bar before your meal.
Private dining for special occasionsIf you want to celebrate in style, you can book
The Orchard Room, which seats 18 and our chef
team can design a special menu just for you.
Whether you’re entertaining visitors or just don’t
feel like cooking, Prescott’s is right on your doorstep
providing proper food, beautifully cooked and served
by friendly and helpful staff.
Breakfast like a king!If you’re an early bird you might choose to wander through to
Prescott’s and take breakfast. The menu changes every day, from
designer porridge (choose your own toppings) to pancakes, eggs,
filled croissants and bagels and of course the Full English.

NATURAL BEAUTIESWindsor Great Park, including Savill Gardens and
Virginia Water, is a wonderful place to visit at any
time of year and offers much to enjoy. Take a stroll
through ancient park and woodland, along tree-lined
avenues where deer roam free in the shadow of
Windsor Castle, and among the interconnected
Savill Gardens with their magnificent horticultural
displays. Take a picnic or stop off at one of the
cafes dotted around the parks.
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Nestled between the charming villages of Sunninghill and Sunningdale,
near Ascot in Berkshire, Lynwood Village enjoys a fantastic location that
is both desirable and practical. With a host of beautiful and interesting
places to visit nearby, plus easy access to shops and services you’ll
be able to make the most of your well-deserved leisure time.

SPORTING EXCELLENCE
If you’re a keen golfer you are spoilt for choice with
world renowned courses at Sunningdale, Wentworth
and Royal Ascot. We also enjoy horseracing at Ascot
which is a five minute drive from the village and every
year we go to Watersplash Lane to see the royal family
in their carriages en route to the racecourse. There
are also local bowls clubs you can join if you want to
perfect your skills outside the village.
THE BIG SMOKE It’s under an hour to London by train from
Sunningdale or Ascot so it’s easy to maintain
links with the capital or to access its culture.
If you’re looking to travel further afield,
Heathrow airport is a mere 20 minute drive,
with Gatwick just under an hour away.
RETAIL THERAPYWe run regular trips to local supermarkets and garden
centres as well as visits to Windsor for its excellent array
of shops and also to John Lewis in High Wycombe. You
can hop on our private minibus so there’s no need to
worry about traffic or parking. For trips further afield you
can book through the village concierge to join a coach
trip that will pick you up right outside the village.
FINE DININGWe regularly visit Coworth Park, to listen to speakers
while enjoying a superb lunch. There are also many
excellent pubs and restaurants in Sunningdale, Ascot
and the surrounding villages so you’ll have plenty of
options to choose from.
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 7 08/08/2017 16:51
Always here for you: The Lynwood Village Concierge team
As you come into Cedar Lodge, the heart of Lynwood Village where all our superb facilities are located, just inside the main entrance you’ll find our dedicated 24-hour Concierge team.
Day and night they are there to provide assistance to residents and visitors, answering
all sorts of questions, taking bookings and payments for classes, events and excursions,
overseeing security and the general services of the village. They are the first point of
contact for people moving into the independent properties at Lynwood Village, playing
a key role in the village’s smooth operations as well as being a comforting and constant
presence for residents.
We asked some of them to share their thoughts about life at Lynwood.
8
JORGE “The best thing about Lynwood is the people – the staff and the
residents are so nice; it’s a very friendly community and everyone
looks out for each other. The front desk team gets to know everyone
and I think residents like the fact that there’s always someone to say
hello to them and pass the time of day. When people move here they
are often making some significant lifestyle changes compared with their
previous home, but with the great activity programme on offer and
the warmth of the Lynwood residents and teams, it’s not long before
they begin making new friends and enjoying some of the activities and
clubs on offer. That is what makes this village a great place to work in,
and a pleasure to be part of and see.”
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 8 08/08/2017 16:51
99
CAROLINE“If you ask residents what they would say to someone
thinking about moving here, they’d say ‘just do it – and do
it while you’re fit and well enough to cope with the move’.
People really enjoy life here and they feel secure. Being
a concierge here is a really busy role but it’s rewarding
because you play a part in making life a little bit easier for
them. The general rule is, if in doubt ask the concierge –
we’re the ones who know pretty much everything and
always help in any way if we can!”
LINDSAY “You definitely have to be a people person to be a
concierge, we spend a lot of time chatting to residents
even if they don’t need anything from us. Talking to them
is my favourite part of the job. We’re also the eyes and
ears of the village, we’re the first point of call if someone
needs help and I think residents and their families are
comforted by the fact that there is always someone
here to call on.”

Getting out and about is equally important and we offer weekly trips to local
supermarkets and shops which always prove to be very popular. Good use is
made of our private minibus by visiting local places of interest, garden centres
and during the warmer months amble and ramble trips to local beauty spots.
We are always happy to organise trips to other locations if residents tell us
where they’d like to go. We use a local coach company for those day trips
further afield and have secured a special collection point outside the village for
the convenience of our residents. We also arrange trips to Coworth Park to
watch the polo or enjoy a speaker lunch.
There’s absolutely no pressure to join in, it’s very much up to the individual to
decide what they want to do but, because everything is right on your doorstep,
it’s easy to get involved.
As well as our regular activities schedule and local trips, we organise evenings
‘out’ in the Village. Whether it’s Chinese New Year, Race or Quiz Nights, the
Summer BBQ, Dinner Dance or an evening with a wonderful singer, we know
how to have a good time!
All these activities and events enable people to make friends, spend time with
others and enjoy easy social interaction without the need to travel or make
special arrangements. From being at home alone our residents suddenly find
they are out and about, making new friends and going home at the end of the
day to a safe, comfortable place where help is always at hand.
PLACES TO GO...One of the wonderful things about Lynwood Village is that there is always someone to talk to. It’s one of the main reasons people choose to move here.
You’ll often bump in to someone in
the coffee shop or on your way to the
pool and it’s easy to meet people and
make new friends. In addition to those
spontaneous meetings we organise a wide
range of activities, events and excursions.
Having somewhere to be and something
to do can have a transformative effect
and we often see huge improvements in
our residents’ mood and wellbeing
when they move here.
There are different activities scheduled throughout each day, so residents always have a choice of things to do.
Our aquatic therapy classes, which
take place in our pool, and our
balance classes for all abilities, are
very popular and participants say they
rapidly notice an improvement in
their balance, mobility and fitness. If
you prefer to exercise on dry land then
a session in the gym with our qualified
and experienced personal trainer, Lee
Cooper, will help you set goals, and teach
you how to use the equipment safely.
After all that exercise it might be time
for a social gathering in the coffee shop
or bar. Some of these are organised as
discussion or interest groups, others just
happen when you bump into someone
and end up staying for a chat. More
cerebral activities include: Social Bridge,
Board Games, Music Appreciation, Knit
and Natter, or the very popular Lynwood
Village Choir and there are regular
evening film screenings too. Residents can
play snooker, carpet bowls, table tennis,
giant chess and croquet or putting on the
croquet lawn at any time.
THINGS TO SEE...
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 11 08/08/2017 16:51
12
Head Physiotherapist at Lynwood Village Therapy Centre, Rosaria Toohey, explains why regular exercise is just as important, and potentially even more beneficial, when you’re over 65.
It’s easy to fall into the ‘it’s too late for me, there’s no
point starting to exercise’ frame of mind when you
reach a certain age. It’s especially true if you have joint
pain or any other health conditions; exercise may feel
risky, difficult or uncomfortable. But the benefits are
so significant it can change your life so it’s incredibly
important to try.
Why it’s never too late to exercise (and never too early to start!)
You’re not aiming to run a triathlon or develop a six pack.
Exercise at this age is about enabling you to carry out every
day activities easily, while enjoying better all-round physical
health. Workouts should include simple, functional, repeatable
movements, similar to those you use in daily life, to keep you
flexible and mobile. You’ll be amazed at the difference regular
exercise can make to your balance, stability and cardiovascular
health as well as your stamina and your confidence which are
so important to maintaining a good quality of life.
If you are experiencing any joint or back pain that is preventing
you from getting going, book an appointment with Rosaria
Toohey or one of the Therapy Centre Physiotherapy team to
ease joint and muscle symptoms so you can start exercising!
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 12 08/08/2017 16:51
13
START GENTLY AND BUILD UPMake sure the exercise you choose is safe, and guided by
a skilled physiotherapist or fitness instructor. As long as the
programme is moderate, graduated and performed in a safe
environment you can’t go wrong giving it a go. It is advisable
to let your GP know that you want to try and get fitter and
how you plan to do this.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER: Gentle rhythmical exercise eases sore
arthritic joints most of the time
Feeling a bit short of breath initially as you
start up your exercise sessions is normal
Don’t overdo it but start with just 15-20 mins
and gradually increase it to 45 minutes as your
stamina improves
60% of women have indicated that they would
exercise if they had someone to go with. So try
and find an ‘Exercise Buddy’ and enjoy getting
fit together!
An excellent place to get some good safe walking exercise is
with a trolley in a big supermarket or garden centre. Having
a trolley helps keep you steady, and the wide isles afford a
great place to walk steadily up and down. Go at quiet times
if you can. This is particularly useful in the winter when the
pavements may be slippery.
Whatever you choose to do – keep it up and you’ll reap the many rewards of regular activity.
THE MANY BENEFITS OF EXERCISE
Exercise improves the mental health of older
adults. Exercise also improves complexion
and skin vitality, enhances cognitive function
and overall psychological well-being, reduces
depression and anxiety, and increases
self-esteem and social contact.
Department of Health figures show
that only 13% of women and 17% of
men aged 65 and over are achieving the
recommended 30 minutes of physical
activity five times a week making this age
group the least active in the country.
Make sure you find a fitness instructor trained in working with older people like Lee Cooper, our trainer here at Lynwood. If you have arthritis, our aqua classes in the pool are ideal or try one of our balance
classes in the therapy centre.
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 13 08/08/2017 16:51
14
Flexible care Even if no care is needed at the outset, our Home Care team is
always on hand to discuss care options and explain what to do if
a resident feels they need additional support. People may want
some short-term assistance if they are not well, for example, or
recovering from an illness or operation. Because our care teams
are staffed by Lynwood employees they become familiar faces
making it that much easier to let them help.
Home Care We have an onsite care at home service. If you feel that you
might need additional support, such as care in your home, our
team of fully trained professionals can assess your individual
needs and develop a tailored package of care, just for you.
There will be regular reviews so that your care package can be
adapted as needs and requirements change. The Home Care
service at Lynwood Village is regulated by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC) and we have a Good rating.
Lynwood Village AND WHY IT SETS US APART
CARE AT
Moving to Lynwood Village is about much more than simply finding somewhere to live. What sets Lynwood Village apart from many other
retirement developments is the optional, ongoing, flexible care and support that our onsite team can provide.
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 14 08/08/2017 16:51
Ancillary ServicesAll residents receive one hour’s housekeeping per week, which
can be used for general housekeeping duties such as vacuuming
and dusting your home and cleaning the internal windows.
If you need help with minor repairs, laundry or indeed any other
domestic task, you can buy additional ancillary services time.
Keeping an eye outIn addition to the hands-on, practical care we offer at
Lynwood, we also keep a watchful eye out for our residents in a
non-intrusive way. Our concierges, facilities and activities staff,
carers, catering teams and therapists all become familiar faces to
our residents and they will be aware if someone hasn’t turned
up to an appointment or doesn’t seem their usual self. We are
all neighbours looking out for each other with the sole aim
of ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of our residents.
15
Lynwood Care CentreThis superb, purpose-built care centre is located on the
Lynwood site and provides specialist dementia care,
residential and nursing care. If you or your partner’s care
needs change and you think you might benefit from a
temporary respite stay or a permanent move to the care
centre, the team will meet with you to assess your needs.
Lynwood Care Centre is well-respected with a CQC
Good rating and high occupancy levels. Depending on
your care needs and how best to meet them, we may be
able to facilitate a transition to the care centre (subject to
space and the right type of care being available).

TOP TIPS for Downsizing
“It doesn’t matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.”
CONFUCIUS
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks,
and then starting on the first one.” MARK TWAIN
BY MEIRION SHAW
And that sums up the secret to downsizing.
It might appear overwhelming when looking at it as a whole picture but if you can break it down into small steps then it’s much easier.
And remember there are no prizes for doing it all yourself; it’s OK to ask for
help! It can be an emotional time, especially if you are moving from a much
loved but now impractical family home, but try to stay focused on the exciting
new lease of life your new home will give you.
Lynwood Lifestyle AW.indd 18 08/08/2017 16:51
19
1 Decide what you want to keep and make
sure it will fit into your new home.
2 Tackle one room at a time – and as you declutter,
clear the debris!
3 Clothes – measure how much hanging space there is in
your new apartment and mark out the equivalent in your
closet at home. Only keep the clothes you love to wear
or you just love. Take the rest, a bag at a time, to your
local charity shop.
4 Get your paperwork organised. A rule of thumb is
hang onto bills and bank statements for two years and
insurance documents for as long as they’re valid. All your
children’s school reports can be given to the relevant
child as can their artwork from when they were six!
Shred everything else. If you have lots to shred employ
a shredding company – you can hurt your back bending
over a shredding machine for hours.
5 Start a change of address list and:
A rationalise your address book and get someone to
type them into a list which can be printed onto labels.
B make a list of all business, financial, charity, retail
institutions that will need to be informed with their
reference numbers.
6 Eat your freezer empty!

SIX STEPS TO DOWNSIZING
The key is to only take the belongings
you love and give yourself permission
to let go of the rest.
1 Obtain a floor plan of your new home and draw
out where items will fit. This will make moving
easier, as your removal company will label and load
according to your plan.
2 Choose a reputable removal company. Ask friends
for recommendations.
3 Decide how much help you need. Removal
companies can supply boxes and packing materials,
packing, unpacking and assembly services, and of
course transportation. Make sure all items are
covered under their ‘Goods in Transit’ insurance.
4 Packing can take longer than anticipated so allow
plenty of time. Ideally it should be done with blankets,
double walled boxes, bubble wrap and industrial film
to ensure safe transportation of all your possessions;
newspaper doesn’t offer breakables enough of a
cushion. If in doubt ask your movers for help.
5 Moving day! On arrival at your new home, start
with the room furthest away, this reduces risk of
damage as you won’t be tripping over boxes. If you’re
unpacking yourself, make sure your moving team
places your boxes where you want them.
Decluttering complete? The next important step is planning what’s going to go where so your removal team can make sure the big day goes smoothly.
