Our access tram will run according to demand on specific days of the week. Please see our website or contact us for details email: [email protected] Please be aware that although the Museum has taken measures to improve access for all, there are areas with gradients and uneven surfaces. We regret that the trams were not built to take pushchairs and buggies. Please store them in the Buggy Shelter at Town End prior to boarding the trams.

Admissions Building and car parkThe Admissions Building is next to the main car park, checkthe board inside admissions to see which trams are in service, then walk down the slope, under the bridge and into the Tramway Village.

Town End TerminusThe tram journey starts from Town End Terminus.Step on board a tram at any stop and enjoy the scenic route to open countryside with views across the Derwent valley.

WakebridgeVisit the Lead Mining display find out more in the Octagon, take a stroll through the Woodland Walk, discover the bird hide and see who or what you can encounter on the Sculpture Trail.

Derby Assembly RoomsThe Derby Assembly Rooms house the ‘Survive and Thrive - The Electric Era’ and temporary exhibitions as follows:The Mobile Post Box – Mail by Tram.This exhibition reveals how, in the early 20th Century, tramcars became mobile post boxes, carrying and delivering letters and parcels. It explores some of the challenges that had to be overcome in order to provide this service. Included in the exhibition is a fascinating display of the different items that could and couldn’t be delivered using the tramway postal services, as well as the post boxes the tramcars carried. Discover how tramcars have been represented on postage stamps through the years and have a go at designing your own tram-themed stamp.

George Stephenson Discovery and Learning Centre

Explore the George Stephenson Discovery and Learning Centre. Look out for details for school holiday craft activities held in the Learning Centre.

Workshop Viewing GalleryVisit the Workshop Viewing Gallery and see for yourself the latest tram restoration projects, as well as displays of the restorations through the years.

Tram DepotsThe Tram Depots were refurbished between 2017 and 2018 following the generous funding assistance from the DCMS / Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement Fund, and houses our heritage collection of working trams, plus others waiting their turn to be restored to full working order.

The Stokoe Lead SmelterWith support from DerwentWISE, The Industrial Archaeological Association, Peak District Mining Museum and Enthoven Ltd., an important part of the Museum’s history can be viewed via a walkway leading to a viewing platform overlooking the 18th century Lead Condenser.

Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail A series of sculptures feature along the enchanting Woodland Walk, which includes Derwent View, providing breathtaking views across the Derwent Valley. Borrow one of our free backpacks, choose your challenges and become a woodland explorer. Ask our Admission Team for details.

Conversations and MemoriesThis series of sculptures tell the stories of tramway workers and their families affected by the First World War. Pick up a ‘Discovery Trail’ at Admissions to read about their stories.

Great Exhibition HallThe Great Exhibition Hall contains the ‘Century of Trams’ exhibition from 1860s to 1960s.

History Maker’s Exhibition – The Creative Genius of Michael Holroyd Smith. A permanent exhibition for all the family, exploring the life and work of ‘History Maker’ Michael Holroyd Smith, with hands on exhibits, digital interactives and previously unseen items from the archive. Holroyd Smith was a pioneering inventor of the late 19th and early 20th century, who changed the course of tramway history in the UK and had far reaching influence in the engineering world.
