Housing needs survey for Middleton
Derbyshire Dales District Council working with Middleton by Wirksworth Parish
Council will be carrying out a housing need survey after the summer break so that
we can identify local people in housing need with a connection to the village.
The Council will particularly want to hear from young people interested in setting
up a home for the first time, families needing a bigger home, people struggling in
high cost rented homes and older people who may have a need to downsize.
We will need the community to help us identify what the housing need is. We’ll
be calling on local residents to tell us about their housing need through a survey
form which will be available online in the early Autumn. A postcard inviting
residents to take part in the survey will drop through every letterbox in the parish
when the survey is live.
If you have any queries, please contact the District Council's Rural Housing
Enabler Isabel Frenzel on 01629 761256.
All affordable homes in the District are advertised on Home-Options
(www.home-options.org). You need to register and express an interest in a
property when advertised.
Community Bike Ride The annual Middleton Community Bike Ride takes place on Sunday September
the 18th. Meet on the green at 10am. Bring a bike and yourself (both in reasonable
condition). Suitable for all ages. Get more details from Jane at the Nelson or from
any MMBG rider.
Middleton Parish Council website goes live
Middleton Parish Council’s website www.middletonbywirksworth-pc.gov.uk is
now live and provides a wealth of information about the work of the Parish
Council. There is a calendar of meetings with minutes and agendas, a frequently
asked questions section and a useful links section.
The site is very much developing and we hope it will become a resource for the
village. Community groups are encouraged to contact us either via the website
or at [email protected] for a listing in our Directory and
Events sections.
The site was made possible through a successful bid to the Department for
Communities and Local Government’s Digital Transparency Fund

Middleton Village Green Committee Following formation of the "Middleton Village Green Committee" earlier this spring we are pleased to report our
achievements so far.
1. Repairing and redecorating the bus shelter we have also installed an Open Community notice board on the
back wall, one half giving a pictorial history of past events and the other half advertising up and coming
events. Future plans for the bus shelter include siting a village map on the back wall, which would provide a
history of Middleton.
2. Secondly, we have focused on rejuvenating the green itself - we feel the green is the heart of the village and to
reflect this we have lifted the heart shaped flower bed, built with Middleton limestone, so making the
colourful planting more visible. Thanks to Terry Houghton for supplying the limestone, to Jonathon Sheldon
for the many tonnes of topsoil and to Jamie Greatorex , Craig Turner, John Lester and Terry Houghton for
undertaking the work on the flower bed.
3. We have erected hanging baskets on poles and the tower planter has been lowered to give a more prominent
display of colours. We are grateful to Paul and Amanda of Willow Direct for donating the six wicker tubs,
these have been filled with flowers so as to extend the floral appearance around the top of the green. Finally,
the Parish Council Millennium seat has been repaired and repainted by Jim Thompson.
Looking ahead to Christmas, we plan to renew the old lights with Festoon LED lights which will have greater impact
and longevity. The committee would like to extend their thanks again to Willow Direct for offering a donation
towards putting on the "Turning on of the lights 2016". Any offers of support from other local businesses would be, as
always, very much appreciated.
Forthcoming plans for the Village Green include a bird feeding station near the cotoneaster bush and a reconstruction
of the Village Basin which was a vital watering hole for the horses that transported Middleton's limestone up through
the Village.

A big thank-you to everyone who supported, and contributed to, the music hall night at the
Nelson. We have opera, comedy, oratory, singing stars and awe inspiring magic all in the
space of one Derbyshire village.
As well as enjoying a night of song and laughter in highest possible taste we managed to
raise £126 for Oxfam.

Pride in stone Following final approval by Punch
Taverns in June, Middleton’s new
Township Marker has been built on
the bank in front of the Rising Sun at
Rise End cross roads. Many thanks
are due to Messrs Lowe, Colin
Julian and Trevor
Wragg for their generous
contributions to the project. We are
also very grateful to the Middleton
Mountain Bike Club for their
donation to the project. The village
has a proud history of winning and
working stone and the Township
Marker encapsulates this at an
important gateway to the village.
The work was finished in time for
the visit of the Royal Horticultural
Society Britain in Bloom judges.

July and our Annual Barbecue,and
although the weather had been very
unsettled during the day,
fortunately it remained dry whilst
we cooked the delicious burgers
and hot dogs with caramelised
onions, yummy, to be a followed by
strawberries and cream. Although
we didn't have much time to garden
(it was already looking fantastic in
the Millennium Garden) we found
plenty of time for chatting and
admiring our surroundings with a
glass of wine . A good job done.
We took a walk on the wild side
with a guided tour of the gang mine
site with a Member of Derbyshire
Wildlife Trust. It was a really
warm and sunny evening, and an
hour of walking passed very
quickly, with our Guide pointing
out wild flowers and telling us the
programme intended for this area.
Following the walk we made our
way to the Nelson for a Buffet
Supper. In September we are
having a Games night in the
Congregational Chapel. There will
be many prizes and a lot of fun. It's
our A.G.M.in October. Following
the business side we shall be
sharing "the best day of our life".
It's always been fascinating and for
the most times very funny when we
all share a few memories and it
never ceases to amaze me the
wonderful stories everyone recalls.
If perhaps you are new to
Middleton, our Ladies Group is an
excellent way to make friends and
learn more about your Village, and
the lovely people who live here,so
just come along to the Chapel at
7.30p.m.on the 1st Thursday of
each month.

Middleton Wows Bloom Judges! The East Midland in Bloom (EMIB) judges visited the village in
July and the Britain in Bloom (BIB) judges in August. They were
very impressed with the whole village, from the top to the
bottom. Comments included the lack of litter, the real community
spirit, our strong heritage, the friendly welcome and the 'real
gem' of the Millennium Gardens.
They made a point of thanking all Middetonians for allowing
them to visit this special and wonderful village' making them so
welcome and giving them a 'really good day out!' The Middleton
in Bloom Group would like to thank all who have worked over
the year to make the village look great this year. Well done to
you all!
Results for EMIB are in September and BIB in October so here’s
hoping. Whatever we are awarded we are sure that, looking at the
village, we have already won! Thanks again to you all.
From the Middleton in Bloom Group.
