Last MinuteChristmasGift CakeTraditionally Christmas cakes are made well inadvance but if you haven’t had time try this version.Because it makes two you can give one away as agift, and solve two problems with one recipe!

METHOD 1. Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky.Set aside for 30 minutes.2. Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini foodprocessor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan 140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin.3. Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a largebowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries.Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until paleand fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky,the blitzed ginger and the cherries.4. Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾hours (depends on your oven). Check after an hour thenevery fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm andgolden brown. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and thenremove to a wire rack to cool.5. Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard.Cut cake in half to make 2 rectangles. 6. Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decoratewith a sprig of holly.

INGREDIENTS600g good-quality mixed dried fruits150ml whisky, warmed150g stem ginger, drained, plus…8 tbsp ginger syrup from the jar200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing300g plain flour2 tsp baking powder2 tsp mixed spice200g soft light brown sugar4 large free-range eggs2 tbsp milkFinely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons50g ground almonds150g whole glacé cherries

Makes 2 cakes, each serving 8 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1-1¾ hours depending on oven

The perfect family Christmas – we’ve all seen it on thetelly: adoring parents watching beautiful childrenopen immaculately wrapped gifts, their faces full of

joy and wonder. So why is it that somany festive seasons consist ofweeks of frantic present-buying,culminating in arguments, tantrumsand burnt sprouts?

A lot of the stress of Christmascomes from our unreasonableexpectations of the day. We can feelpressurised to celebrate in a way thatis never going to work.

Difficult as it may be, the mostimportant thing is to think about whatyou really want from Christmas and to stick to it. Maybeyou’d like to spend the day just with your partner, or to eatcurry instead of turkey for once?

If this ruffles people’s feathers, try a compromise – youcould agree to do things one way this year and anotherthe next. Say no to things you are really against, but offeran alternative. For example, you could suggest meetingup with friends or family during the quiet days betweenChristmas and the New Year.

If you are the one who hosts the family Christmaslunch, ease the pressure by asking people to bringspecific contributions, and allocate jobs beforehand. It

may seem bossy, but things will go much more smoothlyif everyone knows what they are doing.

On the day, designate one room as a chill-out place,where people can go to escape ifthey need to. And try to take a breakfrom the sofa for a breath of fresh air.It’s easy to stagnate over Christmasand a dose of the great outdoors isgood for everyone.

Worrying about money is one ofmajor causes of stress at Christmasand can spoil your enjoyment of theday. This year, why not challengeyourself to choose smaller gifts thatare really special? You can look in

local independent shops for unusual items, or tryChristmas craft fairs and charity shops.

Last year I decided to have a real budget Christmasand made food gifts for my friends and family. Ask afoodie friend, or search online if you’re stuck for recipes.(Nigella’s Chilli Jam is a good one.) Another idea is togive your time to help someone. Or you can buy prettyboxes or bags and make your own bespoke gift sets or kits.

Christmas is said to be all about children, but I think forit to really work, the adults also need to have fun. Soarrange some treats for yourself and make this Christmas really special – for you too! Alex Brown

Last Christmas I made an environmentallyfriendly Christmas wreath made fromrecycled materials. I thought this year I

would share it with other Village Tweetreaders.

Collect green and red net bags fromsupermarket fruit punnets, cut spirally toform long pieces, long enough to tie intobows.

Collect scraps of green and red fabric orribbon, cut (with pinking shears if possible)into ribbon pieces long enough to tie into bows.

Collect other sparkly ribbon, silver or gold balls

such as those from Christmas crackers orold decorations.

Lastly, you will need a wire coat hanger.1. Form coat hanger into circle with hookat top.2. Sort fabric into green and red.3. Tie fabric/net in alternate colours ontocoat hanger in bows, pushing tightlytogether so coat hanger is not visible.

4. When circle is full cut into loops of bowsin order to ‘froth up’ the fabric and net.

We’ve all met them – those odd souls who bound upto us on the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve,informing us that there are just 358 days until next

Christmas. They seem thrilled at the prospect of anotherseason of peace and good will to all men, while we’re stillrecovering from the last one, grateful to have emergedunscathed.

There are health warnings about any number of things,but Christmas rarely features. Yet there are all kinds ofdangers lurking behind innocent looking fairy lights andseemingly innocuous novelties. A whopping 31 people havedied since 1996 from watering their Christmas tree whilethe lights were switched on; others have suffered brokenarms from pulling Christmas crackers (yes, really!); andeach year a couple of people die after testing 9 voltbatteries on their tongue!

These facts and figures are not for the faint hearted,nor is paying a visit to Father Christmas apparently.Experts say that small children often find a tripto Santa ‘terrifying’ and that responsibleadults should take appropriate action tolessen the trauma. I must admit, I dopossess a photo of my daughter lookinghighly distraught while a white-haired,bearded stranger desperately tries towrestle her back on to his knee.

We all know the dangers ofdrinking and driving, but did youknow that accidents have occurredinvolving out-of-control toy racingcars? The police warn us to stay at

home when the weather is bad, but not if there is a noviceScalextric driver on the loose! Incidents with unfamiliar toysrate in the top three causes of accidents at Christmas.

When my sister and I dropped the odd Lego brick, weknew dad had found it when we heard a loud howl and sawhim hopping around on one foot. Treading on broken toyparts, or being stabbed by pins left in shirts, may result in atrip to casualty. Nothing less than total vigilance is called for.

Do not open beer bottles with your teeth, or leave fairylights on unattended, nor should you use a knife as asubstitute for a screwdriver, pair of scissors or tooth pick.Every year, dozens of people are admitted to Accident andEmergency departments over the Christmas period havingdone one, (or in some cases more than one) of these.

And finally… the Food Standards Agency tells us thatsome ten million turkeys are sold every year at Christmas.They also tell us that 20% of all cases of food poisoningare poultry-related, so you can see there is a capacity for

disaster lurking inside almost every oven in the land.How many of us check our oven temperatures

using a thermometer? And how many more of usare still eating left-overs a week later. Make an

oven thermometer top priority this year, andfreeze left-overs or dispose of them after

three days.Wherever you are this festive season,

take care and have a very happy (andsafe) Christmas, then exhale

because it’s a full 358 daysbefore you have to do it all

Jennifer Cambell has recently taken over theHalf Moon restaurant and pub in Kirdford,choosing to swap the pressures of

an intensely competitive corporateenvironment for the relativetranquillity of rural WestSussex. Her professionalexperience of assisting avariety of companies todevelop their businesseshas inspired her to put herskills to work in morecongenial surroundings,where personal service is moreimportant than the bottom line.

The Half Moon, located in a picture-book setting opposite the village’s Normanchurch, fulfilled all the criteria that Jennifer hadset herself when she started her lengthy searchfor a suitable establishment. It has enabled herto create a venue worthy of the charm andcharacter of its ancient building, set in attractiveand spacious gardens both front and back.

It is open every day except Monday for lunchand dinner. If you are walking in the localcountryside, with or without your dog, you will be

The menu features such original dishesas Savoury Blue Cheese Bread and

Butter Pudding, and a range ofappetising and well-presented

choices to appeal to alltastes, using locally-sourced produce whereverpossible such as pheasantand other wild game.

The restaurant can caterfor events (there is a private

Christmas and birthdays are about the onlytime I can unashamedly play on the image thatmassage is a treat or indulgence usually for

middle-aged women. If you have neverhad one before then you are surely in for atreat if someone close to you is kindenough to buy one for you. I want toconvince you that a massage is so muchmore important than a novel improvementin the gift department but an essential partof everyday health and fitness.

Massage is something we all doinstinctively (e.g. rubbing an aching joint)and is probably the oldest form of medicaltreatment used throughout history by allcultures. In ancient Greek and Romanliterature there are numerous references to the use ofmassage to prevent and cure diseases and to healinjuries. Julius Caesar was massaged daily to relieveneuralgia; Gladiators were massaged before andafter the games. However, with the decline of theRoman Empire it would appear that massage hasbecome less associated with medicine and more withthe pursuit of pleasure. So, “What did the Romansever do for us?” What did they know about massagethat we’ve forgotten?

Well for a start we have forgotten that massage isfor men too. Men benefit just as much as women fromthe deep relaxation effects which can reduce blood

pressure and stress. Men, although lessactive (only joking), also benefit from themechanical effects of massage (breakingdown knots, adhesions and scar tissue inmuscles, tendons and ligaments thushelping to maintain their optimum functionas well as reducing pain and tension) aswell as any woman. Supplying freshoxygen and nutrient rich blood to everycell in the body and removing wasteproducts is good for men too.

So, rather than Christmas socks andjumpers, treat your man or woman to a

gift which could set them on the road to the greatestgift of all – better health!

A Good ReadA Christmas selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett

So, it’s Christmas – time to curl up with a goodbook. But what to read? The newspapers arefull of recommendations of which books to

buy for your mum, your brother, your second-cousin-twice-removed… probably even your dog!Here are a few alternative suggestions.For Grown-UpsWant nostalgia and a lyrical description of timesgone by, when ‘December was as white asLapland though there were no reindeers’? Thendig out A Child’s Christmas in Wales by DylanThomas, preferably with Edward Ardizzone’sillustrations. Short, simple and beautiful, it sumsup Christmas with the Uncles, snow on the groundand the myriad delights for a small boy on the bestday of the year.

If, however, you are feeling slightly less full ofcheer and goodwill, Jilly Cooper might be more toyour taste. The Christmas scene in Appassionatais one of my favourite ever depictions of theholiday, but every December I find myself turningfirst to How to Survive Christmas – bleak, wittyand sometimes crushingly accurate, it is Cooper’saccount of how to get through a typical festiveseason.

Another excellent book with a brief butmemorable Christmas sequence, is Angels andMen by Catherine Fox. It is hard to gethold of, but I promise you, Mara’sChristmas with her grandmother isnot one you will forget – and therest of the book is beautifullywritten, too.

Finally, from the realms offantasy, why not try ChristmasDiscworld style in Hogfather byTerry Pratchett? As you mightexpect, this Santa is verydifferent – for a start, those arepigs, not reindeer pulling hissleigh. And he seems a little on the bonyside. What does Death have to do with

Christmas? More than you might think…For KidsFor many people, The Snowman by RaymondBriggs is the Christmas classic of choice. I muchprefer his Father Christmas – eloquently told bypictures and relatively few words. It follows acurmudgeonly Santa on his journey around theglobe, dropping off presents, struggling downchimneys, trudging up stairs, through all kinds ofweather… “Merry Bloomin’ Christmas!”

Another favourite is Dear Father Christmas byJeanne Willis and Rosie Reeve. This picture bookfollows Mary as she writes her Christmas letter.Her wishes are rather different, as she doesn’tneed any more toys – but an everlasting hamsterand self tying shoelaces would come in ratherhandy. Of course, there is a twist in the tale, butwe certainly didn’t see it coming, and it has beenread over and over again – even at the height ofsummer.

And, if you like the Jolly Postman, then you willlove The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet andAllan Ahlberg. As you might expect, there are arange of letters to be opened, with cards, gamesand even a jigsaw puzzle for the lucky nurseryrhyme characters on his rounds. An absolute delight.And finally…

How could we look at Christmas withoutmentioning the two biggestChristmas classics ever? I mean of

course, A Christmas Carol byCharles Dickens and The NightBefore Christmas by Clement CMoore. I know you have seen amillion and one adaptations ofthe former (The Muppets do itbest!), but the book really isworth a read. Be honest, whenelse are you going to curl up by

the fire with a Dickens novel if notduring a long snowy holiday?

Visiting the Wey & Arun Canal is a newguidebook from the Wey & Arun CanalTrust (WACT) that aims to make it easierfor visitors to use the canal for leisureactivities and to also find out more aboutthe canal’s history and route.

While the Canal Centre at Loxwood,and their boat cruises have helped peopleexplore one section of the Canal, there are

many other parts of the waterway that visitors have yet todiscover. The launch of this publication aims to change that.

Sally Schupke, WACT chairman says, “This marvellouslittle book is an absolute must for anybody wishing to visit

the Wey & Arun Canal. They will have the opportunity tosee where original canal structures still stand, newlyrestored areas, and explore its path through Surrey andSussex countryside.”

The newly created BilliMarket community marketaims to bring together a range of local talent andto provide them a regular place to sell each

month. The markets are held at BillingshurstCommunity and Conference Centre in Roman Way.

The first market last month was a huge successwith many sellers signing up until the end of 2013 for amonthly slot. The majority of sellers are local butseveral have travelled from Redhill, Dorking,Chichester and Worthing. Many visitors commentedBilliMarket was just what Billingshurst needed.

There will be over 20 sellers each month selling avast range of gifts and products; each has their ownniche. Stalls include retro cupcake makers, householdproducts, jewellery, specialised fused glass gifts,wooden toys, delicious homemade chutneys and heartwarming pastries perfect for those cold days ahead.There is an embroiderer who sells photo albums andnotebooks covered in handmade fabrics in the richestwarmest autumn colours ideal as a unique and totallyoriginal gift for Christmas.

From January the markets will take place on the lastThursday of each month from 1pm until 4pm but thismonth there will be an opportunity to buy a variety ofunique and special Christmas gifts on Thursday 13thDecember from 1pm until 5pm. The market has beenextended that day to accommodate the late shopper.

Welch was guest of honour to celebrate her workas the Crossing Patrol forthe past 41 years since1971. Twice a day, in sun,wind, rain and snow,Sylvia has been outsidethe school, crossingchildren safely over theroad and has become avery well loved member ofthe school and villagecommunity.

Sylvia was the VIPguest at a specialassembly held in herhonour. Also attending toadd their recognition ofSylvia’s quite remarkableachievement was Mr MikeColeman, Chair of WestSussex County Council,Sylvia’s two daughters, Alison and Maria, JulieFinn, Manager of the County’s Crossing Patrols,members of the Governing Body of the school aswell as staff and children at the school.

In an emotional celebration Sylvia told thechildren she “had never once regretted taking onthe job” and that she “loved all her children andmisses them hugely”.

Sylvia finally had to hang up her ‘lollipop’ aftera recent fall and deterioration in her health but

Helen Williamson, Headteacher,said in the assembly that “we areall looking forward to seeing Sylviaat school, in the warm, helping the

children as she is suchan important part of theschool. I know shemisses the children andthey miss her too”.

Such a job is not aneasy one. It involvescoming out first thing inthe morning and again inthe afternoon, fearlesslybraving the increasingtraffic and sometimesimpatient drivers. Herdelight in the childrenwas always obvious.She greeted all of them,many by name, eachmorning and evening.Sometimes she wouldgreet the parents by

name as she had crossed them to school whenthey were children!

Sylvia received a specially engraved vasefrom the school, and gifts from the team at WestSussex County Council, including a scaled down‘lollipop’ which Sylvia was thrilled to receive andsaid that she would keep it in pride of place as ithad been so much part of her life for the last 41 remarkable years. To some,bringing more light into the existing internalspaces can be more important than creating newspace itself.

Of course, there are practical issues such ashow not to deprive yourselves and yourneighbours of a sense of privacy, how theextension relates to the structure of your existinghome, and how to keep the costs in order. Theplanning process itself is not as onerous as somepeople may think and with the right guidance youshould be able to achieve your goals. For example,plastics made of petroleum whichtakes some 3 billion years to form –we use the plastic, throw it into thelandfill and then it takes between 300-1,000 years to biodegrade. Thisdoesn’t make sense. Lets all changeour attitude – there is no such thing as

rubbish, just waste resources in the wrong place!”The team have set up recycling schemes

An abundance of cut-foil decorations, thinwispy tinsel and multicoloured fairy lights aremy earliest recollection of Christmas

decorations, where the lounge was proudlydecorated like a pub (you can tell Iwas an 80’s child!). My brotherand I would drag a dining roomchair into the lounge for our fatherto stand on (a time before healthand safety was an issue), andhe’d hang the same dustydecorations we’d bring down fromthe fusty loft every year. He’dinsist that “we must use the sameholes as last year” as he pushedthe drawing pins through the Artexceiling. To be fair to my parents,by the 1990’s Mum tried tomodernise the decorations, optingfor a more muted colour pallet ofred green and white. As kids wehated the idea of such radical change, but alas thefoil decs were relegated to our bedrooms.

Although I hold these memories dear, I wouldn’thave this kind of decoration anywhere near myminimalist abode, and much prefer real ‘trimmings’wherever possible. I don’t think there’s anythingmore special than a family day out collecting pinecones and seed heads, then returning to thegarden to cut long lengths of Ivy to wrap aroundthe spindles on the staircase while humming ‘Deckthe Halls with Boughs of Holly’ (words from 1881).The word ‘deck’ in the title is of course referring tothe verb meaning ‘adorn’ and entered the languagefrom the Dutch word ‘dekken’, meaning ‘to cover’(although you’d be forgiven for thinking it soundslike a piece of furniture from Ikea!).

Both holly and ivy will last a week or so without

water when cut and broughtinto the house (longer still if itscooler), but other foliage willrequire some moisture. The easiest

way to make yourown table decoration isto take an old 6 inchterracotta pot and squash awetted piece of green oasisinside. Place a church candlecentrally and add in cut pieces ofholly, ivy and other evergreenleaves, as well as berries such asholly and Cotoneaster. You caneven add in pine cones (scentedwith a few drops of festivescented oil) or push in a couple ofcinnamon sticks. Do make sureyou place it on a level saucer orsimilar, keep it moist and don’t letthe candle burn too low

Winter Survival

Winter is a time most horse owners dread!Short daylight hours and increasedworkload as horses are stabled for longer

due to the cold, wet days. The possibility of ice andsnow and limited turnout due to rutted, frozenpaddocks is part and parcel of horsey life. Here area few tips to help horse and rider through the longmonths ahead!Helping the horse:Mud fever is a common winter problem; bacteriaenter the skin through minuteabrasions and set up aninfection. Horses affected willhave scabs and sore, crackedskin – most likely on the lowerleg but it can occur on otherareas of the body as well.Mild cases can be treated bythe owner by washing thelegs, removing scabs andthen thoroughly drying thelegs after wards and leavingthe horse on a deep, cleanbed and using a barrier liquidor cream before turning out.More severe cases will need antibiotic treatmentfrom a vet.Rain scald is another skin condition caused bybacteria thriving in wet conditions. Affected horseswill have scabs forming under the hair on their back,neck and withers, often accompanied by a serum.Affected horses need to be kept clean and dry andhave access to shelter and a good waterproofturnout rug. Rain scald treatment is similar to that ofmud fever and severe cases should be attended bya vet.Coughs. Some horses are sensitive to dust and thisis exacerbated when stabled for long periods in thewinter, feeding dry hay can challenge the respiratorysystem. Look to using dust extracted bedding; thereare plenty to choose from and either steam or soakhay or use haylage to minimise challenge to therespiratory system, stable hygiene is also of greatimportance, do not let ammonia build up in thebedding and keep surfaces free from dust.Limited turnout. Some yards have limited turnoutover the winter, especially those on clay soils whichbecome boggy very quickly. If your horse has tospend lots of time in the box make sure he hasplenty to keep occupied with. There are many stabletoys on the market: treat balls that dispense ponynuts and boredom breaking licks are very popular,you can put carrots in the hay net and apples in hiswater bucket as well as hanging a swede to keepyour equine friend from getting bored!

Rugging. Apart from some of our very hardy nativeponies most horses will benefit from some sort ofrug during the winter months. Rugs are available ina huge range of different fits, weights and stylesand it is often trial and error as to what works bestfor your horse! Invest in as high a quality of rug asyou can. Rugs must be removed daily and thehorse given a good groom and checked for anyrubs that may be caused by the rug. Keep rugs ingood order of repair and check buckles and

surcingles periodically forsigns of wear and tear.Rider:Head Torch. This wonderfulinvention allows you to haveboth hands free so you canget on with the job to hand –in fact you can use theprecious daylight hours toride and poo-pick in the dark!Waterproof trousers are amust too; many types allowyou to ride in them, keepingyour legs warm and dry!They are also great for

popping on over you office clothes so you don’tsmell of horses when you get to work!And…Keep some road salt to hand for putting down onthe yard when the weather is icy, much safer forhumans and horses!

Lag all water pipes as much as possible. This willhelp prevent burst pipes as well as keeping thewater flowing. Putting a football in water troughscan also help prevent the water freezing solid.

Keep a few filled water containers in anaccessible and well insulated place – wrappingthem with old stable rugs works a treat! If the tapsare frozen then you will have water ready to fillbuckets with.

Let’s hope this winter is kind to us. We haveChristmas to look forward to and after that has been and gone the evenings will start to lengthen, slightly at first and then by the end of February we are on our way towards spring. John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farmmanager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life onthe farm from the now to days gone by.

As you get older do you find that you reflect evermore on events and times longgone? I do. For some reason I

measure the passing of the years moreby the passage of winters than by anybirthday celebration. Perhaps as afarmer the long winter nights and thequietness that descends on the land atthis time of year gives me more time todwell on the seasons that have passed.

I consider myself fortunate to havebeen born during the later part of theSecond World War and as such to havewitnessed a dramatic and wonderfulchange in the world around me.However, there are memories fromthose days of my childhood that still liftmy spirit at their recalling and make mea little sad at their loss. For instance…

Wool. Long before syntheticmaterials that drip dry and need noironing. Hours spent with arms outstretched holdingthat skein of wool so that Gran could roll it into a ball.Peering through the dim light of a gas lamp thatspluttered on the wall, as she unpicked yet anothersweater to recycle the material into a pair of socks ormittens.

The mangle in the yard on a Monday, tin bath in frontof the fire on a Saturday, bed time in the Morrisonshelter – the Anderson in the garden was always full ofwater; my Gran always said it was only fit to growmushrooms in… even when a couple of houses downour road were reduced to rubble.

Collecting coal on the soapbox cart from the shuntingyard, balloons and goldfish from the rag-and-bone man.Milk and bread delivered by a cart that was pulled by ahorse who knew the round better than the driver, who,at the end of the day, would sit in his seat and ‘do’ hisbooks while the horse made its own way home.

When the snows came it was snowball fights andslides, the latter carefully groomed to huge lengths andguarded by a boot inspector to check that nobody withBlakeys in their soles was allowed on it as they would

cut the smooth surface to ribbons. The long winter of1948 was recalled with horror by adults and loved by uschildren.

The Sunday school outing on double-decker busesto the coast for a day by the sea. Stuffing sand down

the insides of our knitted swimmingcostumes to see who could hold themost and then standing in the shallowsso that it leaked slowly back into thelapping water. Walking back up thebeach with the crutches down aroundour kneecaps from the stretched wool,and small rivulets of blue dye, lookinglike premature varicose veins, runningdecoratively down our legs.

Saturday morning cinema: sixpenceto get in, a great singsong, thencartoons, a serial and finally a Westernor similar which we would emulate byshooting at each other all the way homeafterwards.

Liquorice Wood, lemonade, sherbetpowder, aniseed balls, gob stoppersand palm toffee bars.

That accumulator powered radio onthe sideboard, Rays a Laugh, Educating Archie, InTown Tonight, Dick Barton Special Agent, Workers’Playtime, ITMA, Wilfred Pickles with Violet Carson atthe piano (Later to become Ena Sharples in Corrie) andon and on…

The band playing on the stand in the park and Gransitting in her deckchair, eyes closed and pink bloomerson display.

Red buses that had open doorways where you couldhang on to the upright pole and dare each other tojump off before the bus stopped. Bus tickets dispensedfrom a wooden clipboard that the conductress held andsnipped with her little machine strapped to her waist.Fag cards, cardboard milk bottle tops (useful formaking pom-poms ), French knitting with an old cottonreel, marbles in the gutter, catapults, fish and chipswrapped in newspaper, Liptons, Home and Colonial,MacFisheries, Lyons corner shops, Woolworths when ithad a myriad of individual counters, each one mannedby its own assistant. It is starting to become peaceful at Tedfold. TheBillingshurst fireworks are over for another yearthank goodness; they are held

extremely close to the farm andcause much distress to thelivestock especially the horses.

We have held our last pigcourse in 2012 and then we sortof hibernate for the worst of thewinter! Our son, Oliver, hasmade use of this extra time toteach a pen of fattening weanersto sit on command – alwaysuseful(!) but he probably nowwon’t eat them now.

The rain is causing us problems for the pigswith a thick mud of Velcro soup in some of thepens, so we have ordered yet more arks to beable to create new pens.

Excitingly we are now pig exporters and sold aMiddle White sow to a smallholding in France –or should that be La Petite Ferme. Time wasagainst us as she is pregnant and you cannotexport in the last 10% of gestation. However, theAHVLA export centre and our vet were

exceedingly efficient and after a 4.30am start shearrived safely with a few days to spare. We have

one gilt left to farrow beforeChristmas and have confirmeda few sows pregnant to givebirth in January, ready for the2013 show circuit and thespring weaner market.

We selected some lambs tosend off for our Christmascustomers (and the lovelyHarry Sherrard who cut ourhay for us in exchange forsome meat – thank you Harry)which, after maturing, will be

delivered to freezers around West Sussex. The chickens are laying one egg a fortnight –

lucky we don’t rely on them to pay the mortgage!The WSSC has a reshuffled committee with a

new activities manager ‘Mossy’ who will organiseadditional trips and activities for club membersand we have our 2012 Christmas social on the12th December at Brinsbury so come along andmeet us all. Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

There are many reasons why you might wantto use mobile phone technology to getonline and the chances are you may even

have a device that lets you do so.It’s important to feel confident and comfortable

about mobile internet so that you don’t end upwith an unexpectedly large bill at the end of themonth.

The costs that you run up will vary dependingon whether you are using the mobile web with a3G or Wi-Fi connection. Once you understand thedifference you’ll be in a better position to managehow much you spend.

All smartphones come with 3G connectivity. Putvery simply, 3G is your phone’s own internetconnection. Another option is to use Wi-Fi, whichworks the same way that a wireless connectionworks in your home or office.

When your mobile connectivity is switched toWi-Fi mode you are asking the device to find anoutside source to provide an internet connection,instead of using the phone’s 3G connectivity.

When using the Wi-Fi connection the service isusually free of charge (if you have to pay this willbe made clear before you can use it).

When using a 3G connection your use will belimited to an amount that you’ve agreed with yourprovider; if you exceed the limit you’ll be chargedextra. So it’s best to use Wi-Fi where you can.

So how do you switch on online services onyour phone? In the settings menu you can selectWi-Fi if you are in an area where a Wi-Fi signal isstrong, or you can choose to turn it off. By de-selecting Wi-Fi, you are telling the device to useits own 3G internet connection.

It is common for Wi-Fi access to be guarded bya password. When you select Wi-Fi yoursmartphone will be shown a series of ‘hotspots’.Each will have a padlock icon beside them butsome will be unlocked while others are locked.The unlocked options are public and can beconnected to without having to enter a password.In some cases a connection may appearunlocked but then prompt you to log on using apaid for service. You will usually be asked for yourbank details in order to set up an account.

“I got no reply at the home of a 97-year-old client on Halloween eve lastweek. This is not unusual as we visitthree times a week to make sure thelady baths in our presence and remainssafe while doing so; if she doesn’t feellike a bath on any particular evening she will lockus out (her perogative). However, on talking with a

neighbour the warning bells began to ring…“The neighbour hadn’t seen the neighbour all

day which was unusual. Novisitors had been and shehadn’t gone out. Crucially theneighbour had a key which shegave me to investigate.

“On entering the property itwas obvious the house wasovercome by GAS and I got no

response by calling out to the client soI called the emergency services. Our97-year-old lady was found in herbedroom overcome by gas fumes,presumably there since the previousnight. Not only was she lucky tosurvive the ordeal, the whole streetwas also in danger as four gas ringshad been left on!”

Now that regular weekend public boat tripson the Wey & Arun Canal have finished forthe winter season, finding something

different for the kids to do at the Canal has justbeen made easier with the launch of newchildren’s quiz sheets.

There are two versions of the quiz – one for theyounger members of the family and another forolder children – and both have been designed tomake a walk alongside the canal moreinteresting. The quizzes aim to make learningabout the canal and its surroundings engagingand fun for both children and parents.

The free quiz sheets will be available from theCanal Centre beside the Onslow Arms, on theB2133 at Loxwood, RH14 0RD, between 11amand 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, andbetween 1pm and 4pm on Wednesdays andFridays, until the end of December.
