Welcome to the November issue of Village View magazine. It would be difficult to ignore the fact that Christmas is not too far away but there are many LOCAL businesses who can help you to find the perfect gifts.
When I started writing this section I wasn’t sure I could fill it easily – but I have been amazed by the number of businesses who advertise in Village View who can help solve those present problems! If you know someone with a penchant for fine wine or whisky then Globe Wines (P 56) have a fantastic selection, for a wide variety of beauty treatment gift vouchers we have The Beauty Salon (P13) and Mariposa ( P25 & P44), or perhaps you know someone who would like that fantastic family photograph as a special gift – if so why not give Victoria Baptiste a call (P 21). West Wycombe Village Store (P13) really do have ‘something for everyone’ and you will find a huge selection of local crafts and gifts at the Craft Fayre in Stokenchurch (P11). For the gardener Studley Green Garden Store (P 33) have gifts at all prices (and a lovely coffee shop) and for the outdoor enthusiast EJ Churchill (P21) stock a fabulous range of country clothing and vouchers for clay pigeon shooting experiences. Finally, we must not forget our pets – The Kennel Shop (P34) has a vast range of goodies for our pampered pets…you may even find something you didn’t even know you wanted!! Save petrol and time and see how much Christmas shopping you can do locally.

Seasonal Recipe
Venison Casserole
Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole.
Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole.
Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender.
Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.
Serves 6Ready in 2.5 hours

Dog of the MonthEvie
Hi there, my name is Evie, and I’m a 2 year old Cross Breed
I’m a very affectionate girl, but I don’t always realise just how
big I am! I’m very playful and full of fun, so would enjoy an active home where my new owners will continue to socialise me with other dogs as I really enjoy playing with them. I’m a bit unsure about cats, and would prefer going to a home where any children are aged 8 and over.
If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit
Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you!

Hamlet HistoriansThe Cowleaze Wood Memorial
Almost hidden among the trees in Cowleaze
Wood, Stokenchurch, there is a memorial to the crew of Halifax Bomber Mk111 LW579.
Having survived the doomed raid over Nuremberg on the night of 30/31st March 1944, the aircraft crashed killing all seven members of the crew - all from the RAF Volunteer Reserve. This crew flew 23 ops together prior to the Nuremberg raid but their luck ran out on that fateful night. (According to an account of the raid a total of 786 bombers were despatched that night and 94 were never to return. This was the biggest Bomber Command loss of the war. No. 51 squadron lost 42 airmen; 35 were killed and 7 became prisoners of war.)
The aircraft left its base in Snaith, Yorkshire at 22.07 hours, carrying a bomb load which consisted of 40x30lb
and 540x4lb incendiaries, but 7 hours and 13 minutes after leaving Snaith they were heading for an emergency landing at RAF Benson when the undercarriage caught the tops of the trees. The plane crashed at 5.20am and exploded on impact.
One crew member had a lucky escape – Flying Officer King who had been excused duties because of a bout of shingles.
The memorial, erected in 1994, was unveiled at a ceremony held on the 50th anniversary of the crash and is inscribed with the names of all seven crew members ... lest we forget.
Pilot Officer J Brooks (Pilot), Flight Sergeant D P McCormack (Navigator), Sergeant R Kelly (Bomb Aimer), Sergeant T S Connell (Flight Engineer), Flight Sergeant G W West (Wireless Operator), Sergeant D A Churchill (Mid Upper Gunner), Sergeant S Glass (Rear Gunner).

M40 CEG
Innovative M40 Solar Panel Noise Reduction Concept Gets Highway Agency Backing
The first UK scheme to reduce motorway noise and generate energy has come a step closer, with the formation of a new partnership which will develop a business plan for implementing integrated solar noise barriers at communities along the M40.The partnership of the Highways Agency (HA), Wycombe District Council (WDC) and M40 Chilterns Environmental Group (M40CEG) will take forward a winning proposal by M40 CEG in response to the Co-operative Group’s Community Energy Challenge.’ Integrated barriers have been successfully implemented in several countries, this is a UK first for the pioneering technology. Plans include the formation of a co-operative enterprise that is expected to raise funds for the construction of the integrated barriers and then operate them for the benefit of local communities.
The work will be directed by a Project Board, whose members are Lord Parmoor, President of M40 CEG, Charles Meakings, Head of Democratic, Legal and Policy Services at WDC, and Ginny Clarke, chief highway engineer at the Highways Agency. The Board will work closely with the Centre for Sustainable Energy, which is providing support on behalf of The Co-operative. Lord Parmoor said: “This exciting step towards improved quality of life for over 20,000 local people follows quickly on the selection of this proposal for an award by the Co-operative’s Community Energy Challenge.
We would like to express our appreciation for the financial backing and confidence placed in us by our Parish Councils, our District Councils for their
championship and encouragement, and the Co-operative for their access to expertise and funding”.
Charles Meakings Head of Democratic, Legal and Policy Services at Wycombe District Council said: “Having encouraged M40 CEG from the outset, we are delighted to continue to work together on the next steps in this long campaign. We are excited and inspired at the opportunity to work with M40CEG on such an innovative and pioneering project and delighted to be part of a ground breaking partnership between our local communities, local and central government – it’s a living example of the ‘Big Society’ at work.”
Ginny Clarke commented: “The M40 Chiltern Environmental group have produced a concept that shows real promise and I’m looking forward to working in partnership with them and Wycombe District Council. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously at the Highways Agency, and a solution that combines noise mitigation with the production of green energy certainly merits a closer look. By working together in this way, I hope we can help to give this idea its best chance of success.”
Colin Baines, from The Co-operative Group, said: “As part of our campaign for a dramatic increase in community owned renewable energy, we are supporting several community groups across the country to set up and run their own projects. The intended result is an inspiring and replicable set of schemes that will help usher in a clean energy revolution. This is a particularly exciting project with enormous potential for replication and we congratulate all involved.”

Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, buildingstrength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and
bringing it into the correct alignment. It helps toreshape your body, which will become longer
and leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect
balance between strength and flexibility and it is agreat way to reduce stress or unwanted tension. Perfectfor athletes looking to enhance their performance and
it is also ideal for first-time exercisers. Its slow, controlled approach means it gives much
longer-term results. It is especially recommended bymedical specialists for those with back problems.

House & GardenA Beginner’s Guide
Spring Flowering Bulbs
Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest.
If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs.
Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.
Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus).
Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting
them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by mid-autumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought ‘in the green’ which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread.
Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Business and FinanceCredit Rates by Martin Lewis
It’s enough to make you growl. You apply for a credit card or loan, get accepted but
they inform you the rate’s far higher than advertised. Worse still, the application hits your credit score, making other cheap credit harder to obtain.
This is the vicious circle of credit application, yet a few new techniques may help you square it. Here are my top ten must-knows.
1. Only 51% must get the advertised rate.Almost every card and loan’s now ‘representative APR’, meaning only 51% of accepted applicants must get the advertised rate. The rest get costlier deals. How do you find out? By applying, but each one hits your credit score.2. No-fingerprints ‘can I get credit?’ tests. A few lenders have launched ‘soft’ searches that indicate likely acceptance without marking your file. I applaud this – more lenders should follow suit. Here are some of the top ones. 3. No-fingerprints 15mths 0% debt shift. The Fluid credit card lets accepted customers shift existing card debts to it at 15mths 0% for a low 1.5% fee. Clear the debt before the 0% ends or the rate jumps to 18.9% representative APR.However, its killer feature is it lets you pre-apply, so you’ll know your chances of getting the 0% - without leaving tell-tale marking your credit file. And not a bad way to work out if other cards are likely to accept you too. However, it’s worth noting while this is a good shorter term 0% deal, as there’s a low fee, much longer is possible – you can shift debts for up to 23 months 0%. Full info and best buys atwww.moneysavingexpert.com/balancetransfers4. Lock-in debts at 5.9% for life if you’re acceptedHere, applications will go on your file, but if you’re accepted for MBNA Rate for Life, all debts shifted to it within 60 days are at a guaranteed 5.9% APR (1.5% fee) until repaid, in other words, it’s NOT a representative rate. Don’t miss your monthly minimum repayments though, or you’ll lose the deal, and beware spending as it’s at a much higher rate.5. No fingerprints cheap loan checkFor loans over £7,500, Nationwide is 6.8% representative APR or 6.3% for existing customers. It gets costlier for very large amounts but it does a soft search, so you’ll get a strong indication of the rate without it hitting your credit file.
6. Compare cards and find which will accept youI’m not a fan of credit card comparisons as it’s just as much about how you use cards as the rate. Yet MoneySupermarket’sSmartsearch can predict likely acceptance from the 30 providers it compares – and it does this without any fingerprints on your credit file. Though do be very careful to ensure you know exactly what you’re doing and the best way to work a card once you get it.7. What lenders really know about youThere are lots of myths about what information credit files actually contain. What’s on your credit file: Your addresses, County Court Judgement and Bankruptcy record, 6 years’ credit history of credit applications and loose repayment history, and some utility history. What’s not on it? Criminal records, parking or speeding fines, your race/religion, savings, salary, CSA info, student loans, credit rejections, PPI or bank charge reclaims.8. Earn £100 cash back and (re)build your credit scoreA key to (re)building credit worthiness is proving you can behave well, by getting a credit card and never missing a repayment. Of course, the difficulty is getting the card. The Aqua Reward is aimed at poor credit scorers, even some with CCJs/defaults over a year old pass its credit score. Applications will go on your file, but, uniquely, it pays a big 3% cash back on all spending up to a maximum of £100 a year. However, it’s a horrid 34.9% representative APR, so do your normal spending on it, which will help build your file. But ALWAYS fully repay each month to avoid interest and never withdraw cash – so there’s only gain, no cost to you.9. Checking your credit files doesn’t go on your credit fileIt’s important to regularly check to spot any errors. When you do, you’ll often see how many times you’ve checked in the past. Many worry this hurts them, but only you see this information, lenders don’t. There are three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and CallCredit. You can check them all online for £2 each – for what to check and a loophole to get them free, see www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditrating. 10. Don’t worry, insurance comparisons are no fingerprints. Many people worry that when they’re using comparison site to find cheap insurance deals these involve getting quotes for credit (if you want to pay monthly). Yet credit reference agency Experian confirms comparisons only use soft searches, so while they may appear on your file, lenders won’t see them.
