Welcome to the December issue of Village View magazine. Firstly this month we would like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and safe 2013. As in previous years we will not be sending cards to our advertisers but will be donating the money that we would have spent to two local charities (Stokenchurch Scouts and Guides and Lane End British Legion).
Due to advertiser requests we are now offering some advertising space on the front cover of the magazine, but will continue to strive to make our covers appealing and eye catching. If you have a stunning local photo that may look good on one of our covers, please send it to [email protected]. and we will see if it would be suitable. For those of you who still have Christmas shopping to complete don’t forget to browse the magazine for advertisers who may be able to help (we published an extensive list in last months editorial) – there is an amazing choice locally and you will also save on petrol costs!
Happy Christmas to you all.

RecipeMy Granny’s Christmas Pudding
The stout in this recipe will add the moisture to the pudding and the cocoa powder makes the pudding look dark
You’ll Need2 pint pyrex bowl to cook it in
Ingredients1oz mixed peel1oz ground almonds2 medium sized eggs¼ teaspoon almond essence2 teaspoons brandy1 can of stout2 teaspoons cocoa powder¼ teaspoon nutmeg¼ teaspoon baking powder¼ teaspoon mixed spice4oz plain flour4oz breadcrumbs4oz beef suet4oz brown sugar4oz raisins4oz sultanas4oz glace cherries1 grated lemon rind½ apple grated½ carrot grated
Method1) Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together.
2) Add the eggs and the brandy and mix then pour in the stout gradually and keep stirring until your mixture is the consistency of a loose cake mix.
3) Grease you pudding bowl with a little butter and pour in the pudding mix.
4) Cover with foil and then a tea towel or pudding cloth and tie it to the top of the bowl, this is to prevent any water getting in.
5) Place in a large boiling pan and fill with water ¾ of the way up the side of the bowl.
6) Boil on a moderate heat for 6 hours keep topping up the water with boiled kettle water if the level starts to drop.
7) When the pudding is ready turn it out and leave to cool. These puddings can be stored wrapped in foil from now until Christmas, to reheat just place the pudding back in the bowl and boil for another 2 hours on Christmas day.
8) Can be served with a sprinkling of icing sugar on the top or pour on ¼ brandy and light for a flaming Christmas pudding.

Martin LewisGender Insurance
I’m not quite sure this is what ’60s feminists had in mind. Due to a new equality law that comes into play in December, many women face huge car insurance hikes, some as high as £2,000. Yet there’s still (just) time to beat it.
On 21 December the European Court of Justice gender equalisation ruling gains the full force of law. From that date, insurers aren’t permitted to discriminate by offering different prices based on whether someone is a man or woman – gender is no longer a factor. So, all other things being equal, you’d pay the same. The current situation is far from that. According to Gocompare, at the end of August men on average paid £315 – or 41% – more than women. Men under 20 paid up to £2,000 more, as young women drivers have a far better safety record than their stereotypical boy-racer equivalents. No one knows for sure what will happen even now, though we’ve known about this ruling for over a year. This is because insurers are playing a waiting game to spot what their competitors will do – so they can nip in and gain advantage one way or the other. It is possible men’s prices could drop to that of women’s (fat chance). More likely, women will face monumental hikes and men’s come down a touch.Act now and you can beat itThe younger you are, the more this is likely to have a full-scale price catastrophe impact, as this is where the biggest differences are. Under-35s are likely to be affected and under-25s hit hard.If your renewal is due now, great. Ensure you get a cheap policy – that effectively locks in at current discriminated prices for a year. However, if your renewal date is closer to the law coming into effect, you are at risk. This isn’t a case of all change on 21 December – insurers can bring it in, or at least start to move prices in that direction, earlier. The one way out is to consider whether you can cancel your current policy and sign up for a new 12-month one now. Many providers, if you haven’t claimed, will refund you for the part of the policy that’s unused.
However, they will probably charge an early exit fee, and it’s also worth bearing in mind you’re unlikely to get a no-claims bonus for that year. So before you do anything, it’s worth checking to see what the score is.If there are costs to cancelling, then it’s a punt as to whether it’s worth it or not - there are no hard or fast rules here. The best thing is try to find a better value policy than you currently have that can cover these early leaving fees. How to find the very cheapest dealCombine car insurance comparisons. If you don’t have an unusual insurance history, the easy way to get a cheap price is by using comparison sites. Yet don’t just look at one, combine a few, as they don’t all search the same companies. This way you get a wider spread of quotes without adding much time. My assessment of the current top three for range is MoneySupermarket.com, Confused.com and TescoCompare.com. If you have an atypical situation, consider getting one-on-one help from an insurance broker.Check the biggies they miss. Not all insurers are on comparison sites - the two most notable exclusions are Aviva and Direct Line. Plus, if you’re in a home with more than one car, it’s worth also checking out the Admiral MultiCar policy as comparison sites can’t factor that in.Add in a responsible second driver. If you’re a young driver, see if you can cut the cost by adding a second driver to your policy, even if they’ll rarely drive the car. As it reduces the average risk, it can cut your cost. It won’t always work, but can make a big difference.Third party isn’t always cheapest. Counter-logically you may pay more as opting for lesser third-party cover can statistically indicate to insurers you’re a higher risk. So don’t assume it’s cheapest, always check comprehensive prices too.Consider telematics policies. Young drivers who are struggling to get cheap insurance using the techniques above could also try telematics, where your driving is monitored by a box in the car, and your insurance price reflects this. For a full rundown of these, see www.moneysavingexpert.com/U25carinsuranceCheck for cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest deal, see if you can get cashback on it via a cashback website like Topcashback.co.uk or Quidco.com to reduce the cost.

House & GardenA Beginner’s Guide
Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use?
Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it’s best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process.
You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you’ll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven’t gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Book ReviewChristmas Goes Crackers
If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year.
The Far Side Gallery 1By Gary LarsonIf there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour.
The Book of Bunny SuicidesAndy RileyPoor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I guarantee that you’ll laugh out loud.
Simon’s Cat Vs. The World!Simon TofieldNot since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his long-suffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before. Forget fighting dead flies…this time it’s war.
Life-long cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic.
Garfield-Going for GoldJim DavisTimed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.
The Best of Matt 2012Matthew PritchettLooking back over the last twelve months, you would expect cartoons on the Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else in-between. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year.
The Best of “Punch” CartoonsHelen WalasekPrion Books Limited‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk.

The Chiltern Society - Bottom Wood Conservation Group
Would you like to help us care for this area of ancient woodland? The Chiltern Society is looking for someone to take over the role of Site Co-ordinator for Bottom Wood, an area of ancient woodland near Stokenchurch. The current volunteer is retiring. Bottom Wood is classified as a semi-natural ancient woodland. It is a fine, historic and peaceful wood which has been in Chiltern Society ownership since 1984 and is managed as a nature reserve by our volunteers. Its footpaths and bridleways are in regular use, and occasional Open Days are held to encourage Society members and others to come and see the special features of the wood for themselves. The wood is situated between Radnage and Studley Green, near Stokenchurch and is accessible from Old Dashwood Hill, Studley Green via a footpath indicated by a signpost. SatNav HP14 3XD will take you close to the signpost
Site Co-ordinator's role – voluntary role
Visit the woods once a week to report on any problems– maybe you live locally or walk a dog in these woods regularly
Arrange occasional volunteer work parties to carry out work, mainly in the winter months so that Bottom Wood is managed to encourage wildlife, increase biodiversity and provide a safe environ-ment for visitors– there is a long term management plan for these woods written by the Chiltern Woodland Project
Support for this role—An active group of volunteers and helpers comprise the informal Bottom Wood Group, and there are other conservation groups within the Chiltern Society who are willing to come and lend a hand on work party days too. John Morris from the Chiltern Woodland Project provides guidance and support to the Site Coordinator, and writes the management plan. The woodland has recently been given a grant to improve signage and information for visitors. The next work parties at Bottom Wood are scheduled for 10 November and 8 December
This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about woodlands and the part they play in our lives and who wants to make a real difference. You do not have to be a member of the Chiltern Society
If you are interested in this role, which should take up only a couple of hours each week, please contact Geoff Wiggett, the Chiltern Society's Volunteer Coordinator on 01442 875906 or [email protected]

Your community needs your help – Stokenchurch Fire StationStokenchurch Fire Station, which is crewed by Retained Fire Fighters, is urgently seeking to recruit daytime cover personnel – The station is currently 5 under its establishment and as such there are concerns about its continued viability. The station deals with about 120 calls a year, which means that the demand on an individual would be fairly limited. To be a retained Fire Fighter you must live or work within a 6 minute drive of the station during the period that you are offering cover, be reasonably fit and willing to attend the required training courses. We would be only too happy to meet with employers to explain how the retained system works and what significant benefits result to a company that supports an employee in becoming a Retained Fire Fighter. If you are interested in becoming a retained fireman then please ring High Wycombe Fire Station Manager Danny Whitelock on 01494 898425.
