This year Godmanchester is celebrating the 800th Anniversary of receiving its charter from King John in 1212. Although there was a Roman town, Durovigutum, at Godmanchester, it was King John’s charter that made it a self-governing manor, a fitting forerunner to the thriving community it is today. The following gives a taster of events to be held across Godmanchester in 2012 to celebrate (www.gmc800.org)22nd - 24th JUNE CHURCH OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN GODMANCHESTER FLOWER FESTIVAL This is the first flower festival for many years, so something special is promised. The Romans built a Fort and the Mill Lade (river at the Causeway) was excavated by the Danes, using Godmanchester as a major base with much of Godmanchester’s road system dating from before the Norman Conquest. The Roman military encampment will re-create training and battle tactics, with the civilian encampment demonstrating cooking, craft skills, writing, medicine and other interesting things to get involved in. The Viking encampment can be inspected by visitors who can try on clothing, watch demonstrations of weaving, leatherwork, jewellery making and cooking and listen to Viking storytelling. Arena events will include a skirmish, with Viking boats returning to the river. The Medieval encampment will host singing, dancing and demonstrations of squire training showing fighting techniques and armour requirements. As well as the many demonstrations, the Knights will involve themselves in the Grand Mělée (fight to the death) - twice daily! As part of our history involved resisting potential invaders more successfully, there will also be outlines of World War II activities through military demonstrations and features on activities on the Home Front – especially about Wash Days. We will also discover what happens when a German bomb is discovered on the Recreation Ground.

Charles Dickens was born 200 years ago in 1812 and was to become one of our greatest writers. He grew up during the final flourish of the stage coach era and lived to see its displacement by the railway system. The White Horse Inn at Eaton Socon may well have felt the tread of the novelists boots and the glance of his eyes, noting another character or scene to work into his next novel. The evidence is to be found in Nicholas Nickleby (1839), where Charles Dickens describes a coach journey from London’s Smithfield to Yorkshire:-‘The weather was intensely and bitterly cold; a great deal of snow fell from time to time; and the wind was intolerably keen. Mr Squeers got down at every stage to stretch his legs and he always came back from such excursions with a very red nose. The little pupils went to sleep, woke, shivered, and cried, as their feelings prompted. At Eaton Slocomb there was a good coach dinner and the five little boys were put to thaw by the fireside and regaled with sandwiches. The Eaton’s Community Association have placed a plaque on the side of the White Horse to commemorate its importance as one of the best coaching inns in our part of the world in the days when the A1 ran past its front door. After enjoying a good 21st century meal and drink at

the Inn do drop in on St. Neots Museum and buy the excellent set of ‘Trails Around The Eaton’s’ to learn more about this former Bedfordshire Village and its unique panorama of buildings, people and history. You can take a Dickens walk around the centre of St. Neots as part of the May Local History month when Peter Ibbett will blend together quotations from all the main novels to contrast the local shops and Inns of 1854 that Charles Dickens would have seen, had he visited St. Neots, with those in his books.Contact the museum (01480 214163 www.stneotsmuseum.org.uk ) to find out more about the events in Local History Month and to book tickets.

All Profits go to National and Local Childrens CharitiesOn Sunday 15th July 2012 will be the annual Kimbolton Country Fayre and once again, will be held in the beautiful 60-acre grounds of Kimbolton Castle; the last place of confinement for Queen Catherine of Aragon, wife of Henry VIII. This will be our 21st anniversary and to mark this milestone event, we have searched far and wide to bring amazing new attractions for you to see and participate in.Have you every heard of, or perhaps seen, Flyin Ryan? Well, the event could be categorised as sheer madness but we can assure you that it will be a nail-biting experience. You may ponder this, but will see their display in the main arena. Also new this year is Millers Ark Pet Zoo which has many animals not only to see but stroke or ‘cuddle’.Of course we still have our favourites such as the Pacesetter dog display team (a firm favourite with the children) and Lord John Robartes Regiment of Foote. Back this year too by request, after several years’ absence, is the Punch and Judy Show.As our Country Fayre is one of the largest in the area. you will find it packed with such of variety of entertainment. From the 800 classic cars which will be accompanied by their owners, over 80 stall holders, secondary ring events, big band

KIMBOLTON COUNTRY FAYRESUNDAY 15TH JULY AT KIMBOLTON CASTLE

music, dancing, carousel rides, to mention a few. The event seems to have a life of its own and attracts regular attendees who make the journey to Kimbolton every year.As you would expect at such an event, the catering is important too. There will be both Beer and Tea Marquees available, serving hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and sandwiches in separate covered seated areas. Also, there is a wide selection of other food stalls including a hog roast, burger bar, fish and chips and superior quality ice cream available throughout the day.For our finale, we have once again booked the Battle of Britain Lancaster Bomber. It did several incredibly low fly-pasts last year, just skirting the top of the Castle! The Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle and The Sporting Bears Motor Club are joint organisers of this fayre and every year we endeavour to create a wonderful day out for the whole family. There is a huge amount of commitment from our members in time and energy and every year when it is all over and we have collected all the rubbish, we say “thank goodness for that”, and start considering how we can do better next year; at the same time remembering that the money we collected does make a difference to many children’s lives, through the charities we support.

Most couples going through a divorce manage to agree a settlement away from Court. A very small percentage of cases have to ask the Court to make a determination for them. There are many ways this can be achieved. Collaborative law, Mediation, and round the table negotiations are various ways in which couples can come to an agreement about their long term arrangements without having to involve the family court. And now Arbitration is another tool that can be used.Collaborative law involves a couple and their lawyers getting together for a series of meetings, when issues such as the future ownership of the home, maintenance or pension sharing can be discussed in an amicable way. It is not an easy option however. It requires a good deal of commitment and common purpose. Those who have managed to sort matters out under the collaborative model report that as well as being more cost effective than court, it also helps them have a better understanding of the other party, and that they learn to communicate better, which is especially important if there are children.Mediation involves a couple attending a series of meetings with a mediator, but without their lawyer present at the meeting. Typically, a lawyer will continue to support each party during the process to ensure that all avenues are being considered in a structured way.

ArbitrAtion - new kid on the blockFIONA MCLEMAN FAMILY LAW

Arbitration was set up in 2012 and is designed to help couples resolve their issues quickly and cost effectively. Divorcing couples agree to appoint their own arbitrator who will hear issues about their case before making a decision, by which the couple are bound. The advantage of arbitration is that a settlement can be achieved in a less formal atmosphere such as court, reduce delays and minimise costs.Alternative dispute resolution models should work out less costly than court proceedings in terms of legal fees. Many couples also speak of the emotional ‘saving’ as typically a case is resolved more speedily and with significantly less acrimony than a lengthy and hostile court room battle. coMPetition • coMPetitionSTARTIng A FAMIlY BEACON FINANCIAL Starting a family is an exciting time in your life as well as a little scary with all the new responsibilities thrust upon you. Most worry about the financial implications around starting a family, but if you waited before you are financially ready you would probably never start. There are however a few areas you should consider. life CoverIt’s easy to think you’ve got everything covered, but would your family be able to cope financially if you had to stop working? Even if you don’t work and have no income to lose, imagine the cost of having to employ someone to carry out the tasks that you do every day. Starting a protection plan is a precaution you can take to cover yourself for that unforeseen situation. We have recently discovered a free life cover for new parents, with a child under 6months. Both parents can apply for the cover worth £10,000 each. This cover lasts for the 1st year of your child’s life, and is a great way to ease any pressure you may experience if

the worst should happen. Clearly £10,000 will not be enough but it’s free and can be increased for as little as £5 a month. To receive £10,000 free life cover simply email me or my team and we can send you a simply form to fill in.Evaluating Pension/s & InvestmentsThroughout life (not just when starting a family) you need to make sure that your pension/s and investments are working hard for you and are in the best place depending on your situation. If your situation has changed since your last review, i.e. starting a family, looking to retire, (or your money is not being managed monthly) then you need to make sure that your plan/s reflects this change and you can access your money when you need to, without incurring penalties. You should always seek qualified advice from an IFA, preferably a Certified (CFP) or Chartered Financial PlannerCM (APFS). I am offering a personal Dog Walking Service unique to your dog’s needs. I walk only 1-2 dogs at a time and my walks would be tailored to suit your dog -

Little Paxton Nature Reserve, field walking at Hail Weston, some ball action and squirrel chasing at Priory Park or just a gentle stroll - whatever your dog enjoys.

I would come to you for a consultation and meet you and your dog and get to know their likes and dislikes.

If you feel your dog is alone for long periods, you find it difficult to complete long walks or you just fancy a day off from walking your dog, I can assure you

that your dog will have a fun time walking where he/she loves best.

I offer walks from half an hour to 2 hours, day time and early evening, covering St. Neots and all surrounding villages. I hold a CRB Certificate,

am fully insured and can supply references if required.

I live in Little Paxton and have taken a change in career, leaving the office world behind to offer a dog walking service to suit each individual client. I will clean your dog to the best

of my ability on their return with dog wipes and towel. I carry water and bowl at all times.

I can assist in taking and collecting your dog from grooming appointments or simply popping in to feed your dog.

SEASONAL DELIGHTSASPARAGUS FRITTATA

Method1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted

water.2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add

this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time. 3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the

Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

8. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

In an act of vision and philanthropy, Charles Rothschild (1877-1923), banker, expert entomologist and pioneer of nature conservation, set up the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves in 1912, the forerunner of The Wildlife Trusts partnership. A man before his time, he argued for protecting not only individual species but whole natural habitats, and was convinced that conservation policy had to be based on sound survey and research. It all started in Cambridgeshire - the first nature reserve was at Woodwalton Fen, near Huntingdon, bequeathed by Rothschild after he had bought it in 1910. He built a house/summer retreat (wooden/thatched bungalow on stilts) from where he and his daughter Miriam studied insect life, especially moths and fleas. The Big Birthday Extravaganza taking place on Sunday 20 May, 11am-4pm, will be showcasing crafts and skills from the Great Fen area, plus activities including – • Tim Atkins, chainsaw bench maker

extraordinaire• Peter Carter, fascinating eel catcher• Thatching (re-thatching of the Rothschild

bungalow)• Nude ewe wool spinning demonstrations• Willow weaving• Wildlife photography exhibition – Jeff Harrison• Cakes and recipes from Edwardian eraOther activities to include• A prepared time capsule with, among

artefacts, hopes for the next 100 years to be ceremonially buried – then cut a Big Birthday cake . . .

WE’RE HAVING A PARTY HELP CELEBRATE OUR 100TH BIRTHDAY!

The fen is now part of a larger project - the Great Fen (a partnership project by the Wildlife Trust with Natural England, the Environment Agency, Huntingdonshire District Council and the Middle Level Commissioner) aiming to provide a fenland haven of 3,700 hectares (9,000 acres) in between Huntingdon and Peterborough, achieved by obtaining land adjacent to two existing National Nature Reserves, Holme Fen and Woodwalton Fen. Connecting these two vitally important nature reserves will provide a haven for wildlife and create a massive green space for people, opening new opportunities for recreation, education and business.A year into a five year stint as president of the WT, Simon King - wildlife programme-maker, presenter, cameraman and photographer - says: ‘I’m learning about the astonishing commitment of everybody who is directly involved in the Trusts, the marvellous support from those people who have joined as members, and the weight of will to make a positive difference to our nation and the natural world, and all the benefits, in every sense, that brings.‘Everything the Trusts have done - and do - is based on hard, carefully considered fact, and that holds great weight with public opinion and within Government policy development. That’s really exciting.’
