This year Godmanchester is celebrating the 800th Anniversary of receiving its charter from King John in 1212. The Romans built a Fort and the Mill Lade (river at the Causeway) was excavated by the Danes, using Godmanchester as a major base with much of Godmanchester’s road system dating from before the Norman Conquest.The Roman military encampment will re-create training and battle tactics, with the civilian encampment demonstrating cooking, craft skills, writing, medicine and other interesting things to get involved in. The Viking encampment can be inspected by visitors who can try on clothing, watch demonstrations of weaving, leatherwork, jewellery making and cooking and listen to Viking storytelling. Arena events will include a skirmish, with Viking boats returning to the river. The Medieval encampment will host singing, dancing and demonstrations of squire training showing fighting techniques and armour requirements. As well as the many demonstrations, the Knights will involve themselves in the Grand Mělée (fight to the death) - twice daily!As part of our history involved resisting potential invaders more successfully, there will also be outlines of World War II activities through military demonstrations and features on activities on the Home Front – especially about Wash Days. We will also discover what happens when a German bomb is discovered on the Recreation Ground.


2012 CELEBRATIONSGODMANCHESTER


Charles Dickens was born 200 years ago in 1812 and was to become one of our greatest writers. He grew up during the final flourish of the stage coach era and lived to see its displacement by the railway system. The White Horse Inn at Eaton Socon may well have felt the tread of the novelists boots and the glance of his eyes, noting another character or scene to work into his next novel. The evidence is to be found in Nicholas Nickleby (1839), where Charles Dickens describes a coach journey from London’s Smithfield to Yorkshire:-‘The weather was intensely and bitterly cold; a great deal of snow fell from time to time; and the wind was intolerably keen. Mr Squeers got down at every stage to stretch his legs and he always came back from such excursions with a very red nose. The little pupils went to sleep, woke, shivered, and cried, as their feelings prompted. At Eaton Slocomb there was a good coach dinner and the five little boys were put to thaw by the fireside and regaled with sandwiches.The Eaton’s Community Association have placed a plaque on the side of the White Horse to commemorate its importance as one of the best coaching inns in our part of the world in the days when the A1 ran past its front door. After enjoying a good 21st century meal and drink at

This will be our 21st anniversary and to mark this milestone event, we have searched far and wide to bring amazing new attractions for you to see and participate in.Have you every heard of, or perhaps seen, Flyin Ryan? Well, the event could be categorised as sheer madness but we can assure you that it will be a nail-biting experience. You may ponder this, but will see their display in the main arena. Also new this year is Millers Ark Pet Zoo which has many animals not only to see but stroke or ‘cuddle’.Of course we still have our favourites such as the Pacesetter dog display team (a firm favourite with the children) and Lord John Robartes Regiment of Foote. Back this year too by request, after several years’ absence, is the Punch and Judy Show.As our Country Fayre is one of the largest in the area. you will find it packed with such of variety of entertainment. From the 800 classic cars which will be accompanied by their owners, over 80 stall holders, secondary ring events, big band

The event seems to have a life of its own and attracts regular attendees who make the journey to Kimbolton every year.As you would expect at such an event, the catering is important too. There will be both Beer and Tea Marquees available, serving hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and sandwiches in separate covered seated areas. Also, there is a wide selection of other food stalls including a hog roast, burger bar, fish and chips and superior quality ice cream available throughout the day.For our finale, we have once again booked the Battle of Britain Lancaster Bomber. It did several incredibly low fly-pasts last year, just skirting the top of the Castle! The Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle and The Sporting Bears Motor Club are joint organisers of this fayre and every year we endeavour to create a wonderful day out for the whole family. There is a huge amount of commitment from our members in time and energy and every year when it is all over and we have collected all the rubbish, we say “thank goodness for that”, and start considering how we can do better next year; at the same time remembering that the money we collected does make a difference to many children’s lives, through the charities we support.

The Huntingdon Branch of the Alzheimers Society have received a donation of £300 from The Lions Club of Huntingdon Grafham Water. The money was raised from the sales of cakes at various events during 2011. David Moore of the Huntingdon Office said that the money would be used to maintain the support services and groups being run in the Huntingdon area.Lions Cakes for Charity is an ongoing project and has been a fundraiser for the local Lions Club for the past 6 years. The cakes are made by the Original Cake Company of Lincoln and are sold to Lions Clubs all over the UK. All proceeds from sales are donated to charity and in some instances a profit sharing scheme is available to groups who sell cakes to members and friends with 50% of the proceeds going to the organisation and 50% to the Lions Club’s charity of the year.

Cambridge Past, Present & Future invite you to their Midsummer Party In aid of Bourn Windmill - Thursday 14th June 6.30 to 8.30pm. Come and help support one of Britain’s oldest surviving windmills by enjoying the summery delights of our Midsummer Party - starting with optional guided walks from Cambourne and Bourn village. The party will be held in the tranquil surroundings of the Mill Cottage Garden by kind invitation of Kate and Bill Armstrong, next to Bourn Windmill. During the evening the CambridgePPF volunteer guides will show you the inside of this ‘open trestle post mill’. Most couples going through a divorce manage to agree a settlement away from Court. A very small percentage of cases have to ask the Court to make a determination for them. There are many ways this can be achieved. Collaborative law, Mediation, and round the table negotiations are various ways in which couples can come to an agreement about their long term arrangements without having to involve the family court. And now Arbitration is another tool that can be used.Collaborative law involves a couple and their lawyers getting together for a series of meetings, when issues such as the future ownership of the home, maintenance or pension sharing can be discussed in an amicable way. It is not an easy option however. It requires a good deal of commitment and common purpose. SEASONAL DELIGHTSASPARAGUS FRITTATA

Method1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted

water.2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add

this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time. 3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the

Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

8. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

In an act of vision and philanthropy, Charles Rothschild (1877-1923), banker, expert entomologist and pioneer of nature conservation, set up the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves in 1912, the forerunner of The Wildlife Trusts partnership. A man before his time, he argued for protecting not only individual species but whole natural habitats, and was convinced that conservation policy had to be based on sound survey and research. It all started in Cambridgeshire - the first nature reserve was at Woodwalton Fen, near Huntingdon, bequeathed by Rothschild after he had bought it in 1910. He built a house/summer retreat (wooden/thatched bungalow on stilts) from where he and his daughter Miriam studied insect life, especially moths and fleas.
