Villas of the South Seas

Like an elegant string of black pearls for which they are famous, the Cook Islands are

spread throughout these rich, warm waters in the heart of the South Pacific. Fifteen

magical, diverse islands are spread over 850,000 square miles (2.2 million sq. km)

of these South Seas, just west of Tahiti. The Cook Islands is in virtually the same

position south of the equator as Hawaii is north.

Located just west of Tahiti, the Cook Islands remains an unspoiled Polynesian

paradise. Situated in the heart of the Polynesian Triangle, these islands are small in

size, but large in spirit. The two most populous islands are Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

Two dramatically different islands, each offering very different Cook Islands’

experiences.

At the southern end of the island chain is Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands and the country’s capital.

However, nothing about Rarotonga is large, except for the hearts of her people.

Rarotonga is 32 kilometers (20 miles) in circumference. Lush tropical mountain peaks dramatically plunge to

white sand beaches that front a fringing reef, enveloping a stunning turquoise lagoon. Rarotonga is the home

of the international airport as well as the seat of government. The relative small size of Rarotonga has helped

to maintain a strong communal atmosphere in this culturally rich country. And, situated on the island’s finest

beach fronting a pristine marine reserve, sits the island’s signature resort - The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

A triangular-shaped ‘almost’-atoll rising up 4000 metres from the floor of the Pacific Ocean. It consists of three

volcanic and 12 coral islets.

The reef that forms the basis of Aitutaki is roughly the shape of a triangle with sides 12 kilometres in length. The

southern edge of the triangle is almost totally below the surface of the ocean, and the eastern side is composed

of a string of small islands including the private island resort of Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa on Motu Akitua.

The western side of the atoll contains a boat passage through the barrier reef allowing for anchorage close to

shore at Arutanga. Towards the south of the side is a small break in the barrier reef, allowing access for small

boats to the lagoon. Further to the north is the bulk of the main island. Its fertile volcanic soil provide tropical

fruits and vegetables.
