Facts and figures

Vinaròs is a Mediterranean town in the far north of the province of Castellón which makes you realise what is meant by a privileged setting. Its coves and beaches seem made for enjoyment and relaxation and they’re bordered by unspoiled coastal pathways if you feel like taking some exercise. Then there’s shopping, entertainment and culture, tucked away in its historic centre where most of its monuments can be found. Fun and tradition combine in its many festivals, not just Carnival and Easter. You’ll also find its magnificent cuisine - look out for the sublime Vinaròs king prawns - quite irresistible. In other words, a visit to Vinaròs is quite an experience, and one which you’d be advised not to miss.

Its most emblematic and impressive historical building which certainly merits a visit is Archpriest Church the Assumpció (1586), one of the finest examples of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, with a Baroque portal of imposing size flanked by two elegant wreathed columns. Apart from its sheer scale, the church is a typical example of a fortress church set in a historic town centre. This is clear from its sturdy bell tower, 33 metres high and the perfect place for surveillance as well as sheltering from the enemy. The building’s façade was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1978, and it provided the town’s main defence against continued attacks by pirates and Berber corsairs. For many centuries Vinaròs was considered to be a strategic port for Mediterranean trading routes. Such was its importance that at the height of its trading activity, there were French and Italian consulates among others in the town.

...that Vinaròs is of Muslim origin. The first indications of its existence relate to the conquest of the Muslim farmstead of Beni Al-Arós by King Jaume I of Aragon in 1233. Curiously, Vinaròs was also the setting of another major historic event related to its Muslim roots. In 1609, all the Spanish population of the Muslim faith were expelled via the main ports of the Spanish Mediterranean, Vinaròs among them.

signs of a glorious historic past

Many religious and civil monuments and buildings have been rehabilitated and some even given a new use. This is the case with the former Church of the Convent of Sant Telm, today the Municipal Auditorium, and the House Casa Membrillera, built in the 19th century in Renaissance style. This currently houses a cultural centre where you can find a permanent exhibition illustrating the maritime, industrial and agricultural past of Vinaròs, while other rooms are used for temporary exhibitions. A visit is highly recommendable, both for the exhibitions and for the building itself. The visit is free. Among the town’s most striking civil constructions is the Casa de la Vila (town hall), erected over stone arches and with a Gothic-style double window in its original façade. Another is the town market (1928), a large wrought iron and metal structure built on lands belonging to the Convent of Sant Telm, an excellent example of what is known as ‘Iron Architecture’. Other outstanding sites are the Plaza de Toros, the nearest to the sea of all the bull rings in Spain, and the seaward facing monument to Archbishop Costa i Borrás, architect of the town’s port. Further representative examples of Vinaròs’ civil heritage and its economic and trading heyday in the 19th and 20th centuries are the house Casa del baró d’Herbers and the old San Pedro Pósito de Pescadores (fishing cooperative) in the Paseo Marítimo, which today houses a modern bar.

A fine architectural reference of the Modernista style is House Casa Sendra, with its symmetrical façade whose pediment is decorated with plant motifs and musical forms. But undoubtedly the best example of Modernisme that you will find in the city is House Casa Angel Giner, an exquisite 1914 building that preserves its original structure and part of its ornamentation.

In spite of the passage of time, Vinaròs has managed to maintain its traditions, customs and festivals, transmitting its culture and identity down through the generations. The town preserves some eminent religious buildings in the surrounding areas that are closely linked to these values: the San Gregorio Hermitage and the Misericordia Sanctuary (6 km out of town), set on El Puig hill, and whose style spans several periods.

Vinaròs has a unique landscape, quite different from other parts of the Valencian Community. Coves nestling between rocks alternate with wide-open beaches under the intense blue of the sky and sea. Along these twelve kilometres of coastline the warm, crystalline waters will tempt you to take a dip or practice one of the many nautical sports and adventure activities available. Quality and respect for the environment are the watchwords on these beaches and coves, backed by ISO 14001 certifi cation granted by AENOR, guaranteeing an optimum service and strictly monitored environmental conditions.environmental conditions.

Vinaròs Gastronomic Club

In 2008 an idea arose to create a quality brand that would differentiate and promote Vinaròs cuisine. This was the gastronomic club: the Club Vinaròs Gastronòmic – the Vinaròs Gastronomic Club. The main initiative behind this logo, which brings together the criteria of quality and excellent service, is the now highly consolidated ‘Concurso Nacional de Cocina Aplicada al Langostino de Vinaròs’ (National King Prawn Cookery Competition). The twelve restaurants which belong to this gastronomy Club are devoted to to offering an à la carte menu where seafood and king prawns are the main ingredients.

...that there’s a tradition, that the Duke of Vendôme, descendant of King Henri IV of France and member of the House of Bourbon-Vendôme, died in 1712 in the town of Vinaròs, a victim of his over-indulgence in king prawns, after being nominated Viceroy of Catalonia and Commander in Chief of the Spanish army. So although you shouldn’t leave Vinaròs without trying its famous king prawns, you should use your discretion when doing so!

National King Prawn Cookery Competition

In 2003, Vinaròs commitment to quality and excellence of local cuisine led it to revive this gastronomic event, first held in the 1970s.The main aim of the competition, held each September, is to disseminate the image of Vinaròs by promoting its fine cuisine with an emphasis on its star product: the king prawn. Ten chefs from all over Spain compete with their recipes, all of which must be based on the king prawn.A jury made up of restaurateurs and gastronomic journalists decides on the best three from among the dishes created, awarding their originators the relevant prizes. Over the years, the competition has enjoyed the support and participation of such famous chefs as Martín Berasategui, Carme Ruscalleda and Jordi Roca.www.langostinodevinaros.com

Gastronomy is one of the major attractions of Vinaròs. The area’s seafaring tradition and the wealth of vegetables and fresh produce in its farms contribute a vast variety of flavours and aromas to its Mediterranean recipes. The rices, fish and seafood added to the Vinaròs king prawns, famous throughout the culinary world for their flavour and quality, are the basis of the most varied and tasty dishes which are a great draw for all visitors. The freshness of the products used and the area’s traditions combine with the sheer innovation in the kitchens of the town’s restaurants to offer sublime experiences in their simple but cleverly assembled stews. The olive oil dressing from the local olive groves in El Maestrazgo, the quality of each of the ingredients, and the great work done by the chefs give added value to the already extensive Vinaròs culinary culture. Any overview of the area’s cuisine must also mention the great and rich variety of traditional desserts, a true pleasure for the senses. Pastissets made with sweet-potato and cabello de angel (sweet pumpkin), and the famous llepolstins, biscuits shaped like king prawns and made with orange essence and almonds. But the king prawn is undoubtedly the basic ingredient in the excellence of Vinaròs cuisine. With its distinctive

features and unique flavour and quality, the highly-prized local king prawn is a great gastronomic pleasure which is within the reach of every gourmet. The delicacy of its flavour is due to the mild climate that Vinaròs enjoys all the year round as well as the low salinity of its coastal waters, enriched by sediments from the River Ebro. As a quality product increasingly valued in Spanish haute cuisine, the Vinaròs king prawn is caught using traditional environment-friendly fishing methods which guarantee the ecological equilibrium of the marine reserves.Dishes with mysterious names from distant times head the list of Vinaròs culinary traditions, including suquets of fish, garlic and ‘pebre de locha’ with king prawns, llandetes of red mullet with potatoes, conserves like anchovies and sardines in pickle sauce, octopus sulsit, dried and baked or with allioli garlic mayonnaise, cuttlefish a la brutesca, mackerel xapada and the countless rices, like the galeras, arròs a banda, arrossejat, paella and rice with espardenyes (sea cucumber). The wealth of vegetables in the summer season produces dishes like stuffed aubergines, empanadillas and coc pastries with tomato and pepper, and potatoes al caliu.

Family Tourism Club

We wanted to improve the quality of our services for our tourists, and in 2008 we had the idea of adapting our tourist facilities to cater for one of the segments that needs most special provision when they’re on holiday: families. Travelling with children isn’t easy, and until recently, our tourism wasn’t keeping up.

The ‘Vinaròs Destí Familiar’ was founded to make holidays easier for people travelling with children, by bringing them services and activities that had been designed specially for all the family. Businesses which belong to the Club offer the conveniences and services that families need when away from home (including cots, high chairs, children’s menus, nappy changing facilities, etc). Vinaròs has produced a guide for families which takes children’s needs into account, including games and amusing characters to help them get to know Vinaròs through play.

Vinaròs is the ideal destination for either an entire holiday or just outings with the family. The great choice of things to do and the specially adapted tourist accommodation make the town a year-round family destination, including everything from sporting activities and entertainment to shopping and cultural events. This diversity means that you can enjoy experiences ranging from sampling delicious fi sh-based cuisine in a restaurant or having a drink by the sea in one of its nocturnal leisure spots, to shopping in the many local shops. As to activities in the open air in contact with nature, both children and adults can walk along the paths that hug the coast, or venture further inland: the Jardí de Sòl de Riu and the Redona de l’Ermita are routes that are particularly suitable for families.Children are well catered for in the entertainment put on at Carnival, Easter and during the summer months. Open-air fi lm sessions, the aquatic park, children’s creative workshops, story tellers and reading and language

activities designed for all the family at the Biblioplaya (beach library), are just some of the most interesting options. Another good activity for all the family is a visit to the port, to see the fishing boats come in with their catches of fish and seafood, auctioned off as you watch. You can also discover our local history and culture on an audio-guided route around the town’s most important buildings and facilities, with narrations adapted to either child or adult tourists. You can call in at the Vinaròs Tourism Office and hire an MP3 (further information on page 6).

Vinaròs Carnival

Vinaròs welcomes Carnival as the most lively festival of the year. With the arrival of February, the town throws itself into this festival, declared of Regional Tourism Interest, and becomes a focus of fun and fantasy for all. The dressing up, colourful atmosphere and music go on for ten days, in the many popular events that culminate in processions. These bring together more than thirty musical groups, parading through the streets of Vinaròs, accompanied by the Festival King, Carnestoltes.

The best idea is just to let yourself get carried away by the celebrations, which I’m sure will bring a few surprises. Coinciding with the day of Saint Anthony, bonfires are lit, and for Saint Sebastian’s day (20 January) popular processions are held in honour of the town’s patron saint. In February, at the end of the forty days of Lent, the town throws itself into its Carnival, a Festival declared of Regional Tourist Interest, and the most important festival of the year. Then there’s Easter, with its processions and religious events focussing mainly on the days of Easter Thursday and Good Friday, when religious images of great artistic value leave the town’s churches and chapels to be carried around the town. To celebrate the arrival of summer, children and adults share activities and fun in the Festivals and Fair of Sant Joan i Sant Pere, popular festivals during which you can enjoy music in the open air, fireworks and a large funfair for all the family. During the summer season, the celebrations continue. For example, there’s the traditional maritime procession on 16 July, the day when sailors honour their patron saint, the Virgen del Carmen. With August comes the Fiesta del Langostino comes round, with tastings of king prawns and open-air leisure activities like summer cinema, a cycle of

concerts, shows and dances. Culinary events include events like the National King Prawn Cookery Competition in July, and the celebration of the Month of Rice in November. As a prelude to autumn, in September the granting of the City Charter (Carta Pobla) to Vinaròs is celebrated, and many cultural activities are organised, including concerts, exhibitions, plays and guided visits. When winter gets under way, Vinaròs decks out its main streets and organises activities like children’s workshops, theatre, living nativity scenes, and the Cavalcade of the Three Kings to enjoy of the Christmas season. ... that Vinaròs Carnival has been held

in the town since the 14th century. In the 18th century fancy-dress dances like those organised in big cities like Madrid became popular. During Franco’s dictatorship as in the rest of Spain they were prohibited, but they were later revived by the people in 1983. Since 2007 they have been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Valencian Community.

If you like the more peaceful aspects of the sea, fishing and sailing are your best option. If you prefer having fun in the water, the perfect choice is sailing or scuba diving, activities in which the local Yacht Club is expert and happy to lend a hand. If you have ever dreamed of flying, you can discover Vinaròs from the air with an aerial excursion from Maestrat-Vinaròs airfield. From the sky, you will have a chance to look down on nearby sites like Peñíscola Castle, overhanging the sea, and the natural countryside of the Ebro Delta. Finally, if you prefer to stay on land, possibilities include playing golf on the Club Golf Panorámica course, only 11 kilometres from the town, or horse riding at the Centre Ecuestre. If you are looking for a healthy activity to enjoy with the family, your ideal option is a stroll by the sea along the Jardí de Sòl Riu path, one of the easiest and most interesting routes. If you also decide to explore the special sites of natural interest near Vinaròs, there are many other paths. One of them runs round Misericordia Sanctuary along the Redona de l’Ermita local path, or you can cycle or go on foot to Aiguadoliva Ravine and find out all about its micro-reserve of flowers, with valuable examples of oaks and tree strawberries. From here you can go on to the Iberian settlement of El Puig de la Nau,

with helpful informative panels along the way, or set off on the longer route to the north, along the GR-92 path, also known as the Pathway of the Mediterranean.Vinaròs’ incomparable setting provides other alternatives, like trips and one-day excursions to historic towns and natural spaces nearby. Only a few minutes away are historic settlements like Peñíscola, jutting out into the sea and with some unique and fascinating historic-artistic monuments. Or further inland, there’s Sant Mateu, with its great historical heritage. Take a dip into the area’s past and discover Morella, an imposing open-air museum, and the cave paintings of the Valltorta Ravine, declared Heritage of Mankind. Another option is to tour the neighbouring municipalities of Ulldecona, Canet and Xert, where you can discover their ancient olive trees, some of which are considered among the oldest in Spain, or visit the Sant Jordi Museum of Artisan Barrel Makers, which shows you many different ways of producing and bottling wine. And don’t miss the chance to visit the old La Esperanza mine, part of the Museum of Iron at Torre d’en Besora, where you can find out how iron was mined until only a few years ago.As an introduction to the richness of its natural environment, nothing can beat a tour of the natural parks of La Tinença de Benifassà, Sierra de Irta, the Columbretes Islands and Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca. You can also explore the exceptional landscape of the Ebro Delta, where we recommend you to include among your visits the lagoons of La Encanyissada.
