“Have I not commanded you? Be strong andcourageous. Do not be frightened, and do not bedismayed, for the Lord your God is with youwherever you go.”—Joshua 1:9

Winston Churchill once said, “Courage iswhat it takes to stand up and speak;courage is also what it takes to sit downand listen.” But understanding how andwhen to step in and lead by standing, speaking, sitting, and listening is morechallenging than it looks. Every day we aresure to face off with challenges infriendship, education, athletics, business, marriage, and families that require differentapproaches and actions that will challengeour courage to the core. Many we will want toback down from, but God instructs us not toback down. In fact, his words to Joshua, ayoung man who took the baton from one thegreat leaders of all time was, “Have I notcommanded you? Be strong and courageous.Do not be frightened, and do not bedismayed, for the Lord your God is with youwherever you go.”

CHALLENGE THREE:LEAD COURAGEOUSLY

REFLECTION & DISCUSSION

How are you and others doing today? Is there an issue that needs to be discussed oraddressed that is off-topic yet deserves attention?

BEGIN:LAND:

Where in your life, do you currentlylack courage? (Be courageous and share)How do you specifically need to hear thewords “be strong and courageous”from God today?

DO:

Today's topic is lead courageously. Rank from 1-10the courage you see in Christian men today. Arewe more cowards (1) or courageous (10)? Rankand give evidence.Courage is the ability we have to meet dangers orsomething that scares us with the virtue of firmness.Tell a story about how you’ve seen this evidencedin a person’s life?

UNPACK:

INFORM:

How do you think Joshua felt when he was giventhe task to lead millions of people into a“promised land” and subsequently knew that itwould involve military engagement when he hadnever engaged in war in his life along with a peoplewho wavered in their commitment? How would this “command” by God to be “strongand courageous” alter his thinking and behavior? What role does “fear” and “dismay” in a man’sability to be courageous?

We’ve all backed down due to fear. Everyman has done this. Often because wehave convinced ourselves that the situationthat lies ahead is more real than the wordsGod gives us. Refuse to listen to your hearttoday about your circumstance, about yourfears, and the future outcomes. Trust onlyGod, his word, and be courageous and actcourageous one battle at a time.
