Facts of Van Gogh
• Very emotional, always showed a state of his mind in his art
• Painted all day and stayed out all night
• Mental status became unhealthy, art shows this as well
• Put himself into an asylum and when he got out of the asylum he shot himself
His use of Color
• Color was his tool for expression
• Color was symbolic (expressed his emotions or mental states)
• Used brush strokes that were short and expressive
How can color express an idea:

What we are doing
• You are going to create a painting using the same techniques and styles of Vincent Van Gogh
• First you need to create a story about yourself, expressing an idea or emotion
• Choose a color that relates to that story or idea
• Create a value study by taking white and start adding the color you chose
• Once you get back to the base color start adding black to it
• Picture is about a memory
• Happy or sad memory?

• Picture uses all cool colors to symbolize being relaxed
• Warm colors at the left is to symbolize being happy
