• Very emotional, always showed a state of his mind in his art

• Painted all day and stayed out all night

• Mental status became unhealthy, art shows this as well

• Put himself into an asylum and when he got out of the asylum he shot himself

His use of Color

• Color was his tool for expression

• Color was symbolic (expressed his emotions or mental states)

• Used brush strokes that were short and expressive

New Vocabulary

• Expression-Expression- to tell the viewer a story, to express an idea

• MonochromaticMonochromatic-- the use of one color family in a picture (tints and shades of that one color)

What we are doing

• You are going to create a painting using the same techniques and styles of Vincent Van Gogh

• First you need to create a story about yourself, expressing an idea or emotion

• Choose a color that relates to that story or idea

• Create a value study by taking white and start adding the color you chose

• Once you get back to the base color start adding black to it

• Step One- (Complete packet)

• Create a color wheel

• Create a story for your project (theme)

• Pick a color that relates to your theme

• Create a color value scale to use on your picture (number the scale 1 through 10)

• Take color choosen and add white and black to it….
