Childhood, Family
• Oldest of 6 children.• His father and
grandfather were both protestant clergyman.• Three of his uncles
were art dealers.

Education• He was sent to boarding school, he found it a sad, lonely time.
• He was not a good pupil .• He was intelligent but not academically.

Career
He decided to pursue his art and drew miners and their families.
In 1881 his need to paint and draw was beginning to emerge.
He painted his room at Arles.

Important facts• At age 16 he was forced to leave school and get a job
because of his families financial problems• He cut off his ear after his argument with Gauguin
• He went to Asylum

Died on July 29, 1890.He was 37 years old when he died.He died in his brothers arms.
