DR. VINOD V. PATHY earned a Bachelor of Science Intensive Degree from Yale University in biology, completing a senior year thesis in neurobiology. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, and completed residen-cies in both general surgery and plastic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

Board-certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery, Dr. Pathy specializes in breast reconstruction following onco-logic treatment. He serves as the director of Breast Reconstruc-tion Services at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. In addition, he performs facial, breast and body surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments. Dr. Pathy was the first plastic surgeon in Connecticut to use both the Sientra high-strength (“gummy bear”) silicone implants for reconstruction and the Natrelle 410 shaped silicone gel implants following FDA ap-proval.

One of a select few plastic surgeons who performs microvas-cular breast reconstruction in Connecticut, Dr. Pathy notes that

the DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap is quickly becoming more sought-after in breast reconstruction. This tech-nique uses only a patient’s abdominal skin and fat to reconstruct her breast and, without utilizing muscle for reconstruction, recovery is more rapid. He states, “Patients are becoming more savvy these days to often review their options prior to consulta-tion. It is more important than ever to work together with your patient to make sure that everyone’s goals and expectations match appropriately.”

From a young age, Dr. Pathy derived his analytical inspiration from his cardiologist father and his creative inspiration from his artist mother. Today, whether it is reconstructing a breast, salvaging an orthopedic knee implant by protecting it with transferred muscle, or closing a dermatologic Mohs surgery defect, he reveals that there is always more than what the naked eye may see. “There is a crescendo that builds up from the care-ful planning of any surgery,” he explains, “culminating in the physical act of surgery, ultimately improving both the form and function of the human body, blending the science with the art.”
