The Caravan will encourage strumming & picking along the way.
It begins in Baker City, Oregon, on June 13 & ends at the VAC Rendezvous 2
days before the Vintage Parade on Saturday, June 23. We begin in NE Oregon for 2 days at Mt View RV Park in Baker City,
(Wally Byam's birth place) visiting Wally's Museum & the Oregon
Trail Museum. We travel through fields & canyons of wheat & ranch land to the Fossil Beds
National Monument, on to the Wilson Guest Ranch for a BBQ & cowboy
music, staying the night. Next, we head down to the Columbia to Hood River, camping at the Western
Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum. Going south from there by way of Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood to Bend,
we’ll spend 2 days at the J-Bar-J Ranch for the Bend Classic VAC Music
Rally, which will be open to VAC & all WBCCI camping & local non camp-
ing toe tappers & pickers. Starting the second segment of the caravan in Bend with an open house &
BBQ at Flyte Camp, we drive to Crescent Lake Hoodoo USFS Group
Campground that brings us to the Free Emigrant Road leading to Eugene. Going North again into the Cascade Range through Westfir, we stay at Belk-
nap Hot Springs Resort on the McKenzie River before our last day’s drive
into Salem to meet up with the VAC Rendezvous at Heritage Power Land in
Brooks, Oregon. The Caravan is in 2 segments: Baker City to Bend (June 13-17), Bend to
Salem (June 18-22). Both segments together have priority. Maximum number of
rigs on the Caravan is 15. Registration along with a Kitty Fee of $470.00 per
rig, is due April 1. The Kitty Fee includes $270.00 for camping fees & $200.00

If you have a vintage Airstream, Argosy, Byam
Holiday or Curtis Wright, please join us at Powerland Heritage
Park (antiquepowerland.com) June 20-23, 2018. We will be
dry camped behind the Northwest Vintage Car & Motorcycle
Museum on Powerlands grounds. Follow the signs or look for
shiny aluminum
While it is dry camping, there are two bathhouses on the
property with showers and toilets as well as porta pot-
ties. Cost is $25 per night plus an an initial $15 entry to the
park with unlimited egress and ingress during the Rendez-
vous. There is a dump station at the Pilot station just down
the road so pump before you come! There will be a com-
memorative VAC Rendezvous sticker and window placard.
The Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association Swap Meet is held on the grounds at
the same time. So with 14 museums on the property, a working trolley, miniature trains
and more, it is an action packed location. Entry to the museums is included in your one-
time $15 fee.
VAC will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary and the Summer Solstice so expect to have
fun. This is the endpoint for the VAC Caravan and the staging point for the police escort-
ed VAC parade into the WBCCI International Rally 8 miles away on June 23. The Bend
Classic will end in time for attendees to make it the 115 miles to the grounds.
Expect to see the earliest (masonite sided!) Airstream, the 1936 Silver Cloud. It is the
oldest factory produced Airstream and was on the road and camping before Doc
Holman's 1935 Torpedo (built from plans). Expect to see the oldest known Curtis Wright
and one or more "Around the World Caravan" trailers. A gathering of 50 year old 1968
Airstreams is being planned, so bring yours. And attend whether or not you are able to
attend the WBCCI International Rally!
Contact VAC 1VP Dave Morrison at [email protected] to register and for
rally details.

INSIDER NEWS
Special invite to Air-streamers on their way to the 61st International Rally, especially pickers, singers and toe tappers. The Vintage Airstream Club invites, not only VAC members, but all other WBCCI members to stop by the Bend Classic Rally June 17-20, only 107 miles from Salem This rally especially invites all pickers and singers of acoustic roots music. We welcome anything that sounds good around a (propane) campfire. Toe tappers are invited also. There is a BBQ hosted by Flyte Camp and the $25 per night rally fee proceeds go to charity: contact Dal Smilie at [email protected]. J Bar J Boy's Ranch, 62895 Hamby Rd, Bend OR. Mostly dry camping, only 3 miles from the center of Bend
“Hey Lee my memory tells me that Dal said if I attend the
Bend Rally and Rendezvous I can get one of these VAC Col-
lector mugs. Guess I had better sign up now!”
Dal Smilie submitted this little bit of Tin Can Tourist history. Early VAC leaders were key in giving rebirth to the all-brand vintage camping group, the TCT, including Forrest Bone a past VAC President. The TCT will be 100 years old in 2019. Some of you reading this may have taken
part in the rally that just passed. Look at the
cool retro art for part of that 100th celebration
with a vintage Airstream no less.

Page 4 The WBCCI Salem rally ends June 30. For those
wanting to tour about some more and experience
more vintage trailer action they might consider The All
American Vintage Trailer Rally at Powerland Heritage
Park in Brooks, OR.
Dal Smilie has been to that rally and it is the location
of our Rendezvous. The All American Rally will be
camping in a slightly different location on the grounds
which has more rudimentary electric and water with
better shade. It is about 125 trailers and grow-
ing. You can google its facebook site for more info
and videos from the past rallies.

Register Now for the 2018 Region 10 Vintage Airstream Club Rally
This year’s annual VAC Region 10 rally will be held at Fort Stevens State Park on the Oregon Coast. The rally runs from Thursday, Aug. 16th – Sunday, Aug. 19th. We have 24 sites reserved in two loops at the park. All sites have water and electricity and dump stations are available at the park. Fort Stevens State Park is located near Astoria, Oregon. It lies next to the site of a military installation used to guard the mouth of the Columbia River from the Civil War through World War II. There are gun batteries to explore, a military museum, and a shipwreck, not to mention the beach and miles of bike trails. There is also an observa-tion platform where you can watch big ships crossing the famous Columbia River Bar. Wildlife viewing platforms provide excellent places for bird-watching. Coffenbury Lake is a scenic lake in the park to kayak in, and there are local places to rent kayaks from if needed. Nearby you can visit Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery spent the very wet winter of 1805-06. The towns of Astoria and Seaside are nearby to ex-plore, too. Cost for 3 nights is $110. Breakfasts and lunches will be on your own, Friday and Saturday dinners will be potluck-style. Thursday will be a “meet and greet” happy hour. Dinner is on your own, if you’re still hungry! Rally hosts are Rob and Diane Nicol. For registration information/questions contact them at [email protected], or call 541-745-7761. TO RESERVE A SPOT: Please send a $110 check or money order for payable to: Rob and Diane Nicol 3133 SE Everglade St. Corvallis, OR 97330 Once your payment is received, we’ll assign you a site in case you would like to ar-range to come early or extend your stay.

TECH NOTES AND DISCUSSION TOPICS
Items we will be needing for upcoming newsletters: tech items, maintenance items, courtesy
parking where you have stayed, Regional VAC future rallies, articles on 2018 VAC Rallies that
you attended with photos,.
Lee and I had the pleasure of staying at Mike Clack’s courtesy parking site in Lockport, New
York, last year in late September. Mike has several spots available, and Lockport is within a 20
minute drive to Niagara Falls, New York. Niagara Falls was very impressive to see!
Mike’s site was beautiful and pleasant. Even though
we were camping just behind a main road, we felt as
though we were camping at a State Park! The site was
very peaceful and quiet.
We thank Mike for his hospitality.
Wally Byam Liked Multi-Purpose Items and So Do We! Using Brad Norgaard's concept of a fold-down laptop support, Scott Allen (Iowa) added a multi-function feature to their 1955 Flying Cloud's magazine rack. The original 1/4" plywood rack was splintered and delaminating, so he built an improved version using sturdy 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. Scott added a piano hinge to form a laptop support to watch movies from the rear bedroom area. The rack opens to make a fold-down shelf; and while in the upright position, it looks like a vintage magazine rack. It opens gently using Rockler Woodworking as the supplier of the piston which is manufactured by Stabilus. The Stab-o-shoc damper model 33620 piston will hold up to 8 pounds which is more than today's laptops! A latch keeps the rack closed, holding magazines, and keeping everything in place during travel.
