City College in Action: Simulation Day nAugust13,2013,theFort LauderdaleCampushostedan interdepartmentalCity College in Action – Simulation Day-Observe Our Students in Actionevent.LivecoverageoftheeventwasprovidedbytheBroadcastingDepartment.Thesimulationwasbasedonapost-caraccident/emergencycaesareansectionscenario.ThesimulationbeganwiththeEMSDepartmentreportingtothescene
oftheaccident,treatingthepatientandtransportinghertotheEmergencyRoom.WhileintheER,theNursingDepartmentassessedthepatientandpreparedthepatientforsurgeryassuringthattheitemsonthepre-operationchecklistwerecompleted.Thepatientwasthen

Graduation LastJulywehadthepleasureofsharingintheaccomplishmentsoftwoofourgraduatesfromtheNursingProgram,whoaremotheranddaughter.Mervil DixongraduatedwithaBSNfromouronlineprogramandwalkedacrossthestagewithherdaughter,Alicia Grant,graduatefromtheASNprogram.Wearesoproudoftheirsuccessandtobeapartofthisfamily’slife-changingmoment!
O transferredtotheOperatingRoom,wheretheAnesthesiaTechnologyDepartmentadministeredtheanesthesiaandtheSurgicalTechnologyDepartmentperformedanemergencyc-section.ThescenariocontinuedintheeveningwiththeLegalAssistingandthePrivateInvestigationDepartments.ThePrivateInvestigationDepartmentinvestigatedandprovidedtheevidenceatthemocktrial.ThestudentsintheLegalAssisting
Departmenteagerlyparticipatedinamocktrial. Attheendofeachscenario,thestudentsenjoyedhotdogsandchips.Thiseventwasenjoyedbythestudents,whiletheylearnedandhadfuninthisE3experienceattheFTLCampus.
The simulation began with the EMS Department reporting to the scene of the accident, treating the
patient and transporting her to the Emergency Room.

“Cherishthemoments youhavewiththose whoreallymatterto youbecauseyou neverknowwhenit willnolongerbe possible”.SentimentsexpressedbyoneInstructorwhilereactingtothesuddenpassingofoneoftheBroadcastingDepartment’spopularstudentsMichael “Big Mike” Mims,onAugust13th. Mikewenttosleepaftersufferingabrainaneurysm,andhispassinggeneratedshockwavesamongnotonlyhisbroadcastingfamilybutotherstudentswithwhomheattendedclasses. Ineulogizinghimduringthehome-goingservicesomeofhisbroadcastingclassmatesexpressedtheirshockathispassing,butfoundsolacerecallinginhisgentleness,warmpersonalityandthegenuinefriendshiptheyallsharedwithhim.TheyfeelthathisabsenceintheBroadcastingDepartmentleavesamonumentalvoid,butalegacyof‘strengthinhope’…thesamehopeMikehadingraduatingwithhisdegreeandpursuingacareerencompassingworkinTelevision,RadioandMarketing.Theironywasthathediedacoupledaysbeforehewasscheduledtocommenceemploymentintheindustry. Inpayingtributeduringthememorialservice,ChairoftheBroadcastingDepartmentDr.Lewisdescribed“BigMike”as“thequintessentialstudent…easytoteach,easytogetalongwithandahardworker.”HesaideveryonewhoknewMikeappreciatedhishumility,tenderspiritandhispassionatedisposition…thewarmthofhissmileandhiscaptivatingpersonality. Inobservanceofhispassing,CityCollegehasdecidedtoawardhisdegreeposthumouslyandalsotomakeacontributiontotheFoundationchosenhisrelatives.Mayhissoulrestinpeace!

M ostofthestudentsenrollingat CityCollegecanexpecttotake theTABEentranceexam.FortheMiamicampus’snursingstudents,however,theTABEtestisnottheonlytestthey’llencounter.OncetheypasstheTABE,theymustthenprepareforthethreeandahalfhourKAPLANentranceexamtodeterminetheirprobabilityforsuccessinthenursingprogram.Alongwiththeirrigorousclassworkand
tests,theymustalsopreparefortheStatecertificationtest.ManynursingstudentshavetakenadvantageofsomeinvaluablepersonaltutoringprovidedbytheirDepartmentChair,Maria Perez.AccordingtoBeatriz Mieres(pictured above),“Tutoringenhancedmyabilitytounderstandthetopicsathand.WithoutMs.Perez’sassistance,itwouldhavebeensignificantlymoredifficulttosucceed.”

ecently,theMiamicampushelditsSummer2013 StudentAmbassadorceremonywheretenstudents wereinductedintotheclub.Thenewinducteesweretreatedtoaluncheon,andafterrecitingtheProgram’sCodeofEthics,eachstudentreceivedaStudentAmbassadorpinaswellasaStudentAmbassadorshirt.TheStudentAmbassadorProgramisawaytolinkalumni,futurestudents,currentstudents,andfacultyatCityCollege.Inordertobeadmittedtotheprogram,studentsmustcarryaminimum3.8GPAandmaintainexemplaryattendance.
Theheadoftheprogram,DepartmentChairMaria Marte,addsthat,“StudentAmbassadorsexhibitaspiritofservitudewhilementoringstudents,performingcommunityservice,anddevelopingleadershipqualities.”StudentAmbassadorsprovideavaluableservicebyrepresentingthestudentperspectivetoprospectiveandnewstudentsthroughavarietyofactivitiesbothoncampusandoff.

AstheDepartmentChairofAllied HealthattheMiamicampus,I,Inas Luka,willalwaysrememberthatday ofgraduationinyear2013,Iwasso happyandproudofallmystudentsandwithatouchofsadnessandwateryeyesIalsomentionedoneofmybeststudents,Ms.Barbara Keels. Ms.Keelswassoexcitedabouthergraduationbecausesheovercamemanyobstaclestoachievehergoal.OnthatdayofgraduationMs.Keelswasnolongerwithus.However,shegotwhatshehadbeendreamingof…herAssociatesDegreeinBillingandCoding.Shehastaughtmethatnothing,whateveritis,canpreventapersonfromreachinghisorherdreams.
TheMiamicampushasanew“ride”.TakingcuefromtheinternationalbestsellerThe Energy BusbyJon GordonandKen Blanchard,theCollege’sstaffisapproachingwork,andlifeingeneral,alittledifferently.Copiesofthebookarecirculatingthroughoutthecampus.Aquickread,thebookoutlinestensecretsforapproachinglifeandworkwithpositivethinkinginordertoachievesuccess. “Help or Get Out of the Way”
Onanygivenafternoonthissummer,students,facultyandstaffatCityCollege’sHollywoodcampushavebeentreatedtoanewsight:highschool-agedstudentsbentstudiouslyovernotebooksandcomputersattheCollege’scomputerlab. Thesehighschoolstudentsarecompletingcareer-focusedcourseworktowardsahighschooldiplomausingSmart Horizon’s Career Online High Schoolprogram.Normally,theonlinehighschoolprogram—whichhastheraredistinctionofbeingaccreditedbyAdvancedED Accreditation Commission—iscompletedonline,inthecomfortofthestudent’shome.AccordingtoHollywoodcampus’sExecutiveDirectorDavid Higley,theschoolcontractedSmartHorizontohavestudentscompletesomeoftheircourseworkatCityCollegeHollywood. ThestudentsaresupervisedandaidedwhileoncampusbyEnglish/GenEdinstructorJennifer Mann.Mannsays,“Theprogramisparticularlyuniquebecauseitallowsstudentsaccesstoourcampusresourcesandplacestheminanacademicenvironment,whichmaynotbefosteredonline.Bycominghere,highschoolstudentswitnessourCityCollegestudentspursuingtheircareergoals.Ourhighschoolstudentsinturnbecomemorefocusedontheirowncareergoals.” ADukeUniversitygrad,JenniferMannisenjoyingthenewopportunitytoworkwithstudentsinanon-instructionalmannerwheresheishelpingtostudents,andpotentialCityCollegestudents,attaintheirgoals.

New Director, New Cardiovascular Sonography Program at City College ityCollegewouldliketoextendawarmwelcometo Mark Berges,thenewDirectoroftheCardiovascular Program.With11yearsexperienceinthefieldasaCardiacandVascularSonographer,BergesishelpingCityCollegeHollywoodinauguratethenewprogramintheFallof2013.AccordingtoBerges,theprogramatCityCollegewillhavetheuniquedistinctionoftrainingstudentstoworkwithboththecardiacandvascularsystems.Currently,mostschoolshaveseparatecardiacandvascularprograms.“Forastudenttocompletebothprogramsseparately,itwouldtakefiveyears,”saysBerges. TheCardiovascularSonographyprogramatCityCollegewillbeatwoyearprogramthatcanbecompletedineightquarters.Itwillalsorequirestudentstocompletea900-hourexternshipinthefield.BergesandCityCollegearecurrentlyworkingonpartneringtoaidstudentsincompletingthiscomprehensiverequirement. Whenthefirstbatchof10-12studentsbeginthisFallsemester,CityCollegeHollywoodplanstohavefourultrasoundmachinesandacardiovascularlab.Theprogramwillmaintainacapof12newstudentspertermandperclasstomaintainasmallinstructor-studentratioasstudentscompletecorecoursessuchasEKGandUltrasoundPhysics,inadditiontothecurrentgeneraleducationcourses. MarkBergeshasaBAinHealthScience,isaRegisteredCardiacSonographer,aCertifiedCardiovascularTechnician,aRegisteredCertifiedElectronicHealthRecordSpecialistandisamemberofseveralprofessionalassociations,includingtheAmerican College of CardiologyandtheAmerican Heart Association.Withsomuchexperienceinthefield,whytheshiftintothefieldofeducation?Bergeswasaskedtoworkasanexternshipcoordinatorattwodifferentschoolsandthenhadtheopportunitytoteach.Andtherest,assertsBergeswas“destiny.”

AbouttocompletehissecondsemesteratCityCollegeHollywood,EMSstudentandBrooklynnativeCurtis Mondesir’smottocouldbe,inhisownwords,“helporgetoutoftheway.”PayavisittotheHollywoodcampus’slibraryandyoumightfindMondesirhelpingastudentwithAPAformattingforaresearchpaper.WalkbytheEMSSimulatorroomandchancesarethatMondesirwillbeaidingafellowstudentEMSstudentintheproperstepsinadministeringCPR. Mondesirisseven-yearcombatveteranwiththe United States Marine CorpswhereheservedasaFire/DirectionControlSpecialistandaMilitaryPolice.Hewasinspiredtojoinbyhisgrandfather,whoservedintheTrinidadianmilitary,andhisuncle,whoservedintheUSNavy.WhilehemissestheMarineCorpsandthecamaraderieitprovided,oneparticularexperienceexplainstheshiftfromsoldiertocaregiver.

Nursing students and surgical techs chill out with snow cones and cotton candy
WhileservingatourofdutyinArRamadi,Iraq,MondesirtellsofawoundedwomanarrivingathisForwardOperatingBase,withherseven-year-oldsonathersideholdingherhand.“Atfirstglance,wedidn’tknowwhattomakeofitasshewascoveredinsomuchbloodweweren’tsureifitwasherorwhereitcamefrom.Uponfurtherinvestigation,wediscoveredthatherwoundswereveryserious.Shewasbasicallybeingheldtogetherbyshrapnel.Anymovementorattempttoremovesaidshrapnelwouldhaveresultedindeathbybloodloss.
Afterthat,wedecideditwouldbebesttonotletthiskidwatchhismomdieatsixorsevenyearsold,soanotherMarineandItookhimtogetsomefoodwhichwaswhenwenoticedhiswound.Beforewecouldgethimoutofthemedicalwarditbecameclearthatthebloodonhisshoewashisown.Hehadtakensomeshrapnelinhislegnearthefemoralarterysowehadtoactquickly.TheotherMarinekepthimtalkingwhileIcuthispantlegopenandremovedthemetalusingtheonlytoolIhadonme:apocketknife.IgotthemetaloutanddressedthewoundbecausetheNavydoctorshadtheirhandsfullalreadyandthentookhimtoseeaCorpsmanforadvancedcare.ThatwaswhenIdecidedsavingliveswouldbesomethingIcoulddofortherestofmylife.” AlreadyaleaderandmentoratCityCollege,havingattainedOutstandingAcademicAchievement(GPA3.5-3.69)inhisfirstsemesteratHollywood,CurtisMondesirseemswellonhiswaytoachievingthatgoal.
