Editors Column

By Laurent Matuana

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer season. This year the annual technical con-ference (ANTEC) of the Society of Plastics Engineers was held in Orlando, FL. The Vinyl Plastics Division paid tribute to Dr. Elliott Weinberg during the morning and afternoon sessions.

It is now time to begin our plans to attend the Vinyltec on October 18-20, 2010 in Iselin, NJ (Palisades-NJ Section). The technical program committee (TPC) has assembled an excellent program that you can find in this newsletter.

I would also like to remind you that it is now time to think about submitting a SPE-ANTEC 2011 Paper. The meeting will be held on May 1-5, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. Two submission formats are acceptable this year: Commercial & Technical papers. In case you cannot submit a paper, the Division strongly encourages you to seek for papers from your contacts. Please, be involved, because the suc-cess of our Division depends on the participation of its members.

As mentioned in the past issues of this Newsletter, the Division has lost several key members who served on the TPC and BOD commit-tees and provided excellent service to our Division. Currently, the Vinyl Plastics Division does not have a Councilor and this important position must be filled. Therefore, the Division has an urgent need for volunteers to support its activities. Please join us and contribute to the Division. If you would like to offer your services please send an email to Laurent Matuana ([email protected]) or Randy Brown ([email protected]).

This newsletter still needs additional articles/information, so please feel free to take the initiative to personally write something. If pos-sible, I would like to have the articles in digital form.

In case you missed the Annual Technical Conference (ANTEC) of SPE, below you can find a short summary of the technical presenta-tions and events.

The Vinyl Plastics Division paid tribute to Elliott Weinberg during the morning and afternoon sessions. The following picture shows David Riley (left, PMAD TPC) and David Owens (right, BASF, Vinyl Div. TPC Chair) paying tribute to Elliott during the morning session.

Dr. Mick Jacupka of Dover Chemical Corp. shown below was the keynote speaker in the morning session. He discussed the current challenges and future trends of polymer stabilizers and his excellent presentation was well appreciated by the audience.

Both Ms. Elvira Rabinovitch and Dr. James Summers of P3Consultants presented their findings on factors considered in dark colored win-dows and siding. They reported that successful dark colored windows and siding require pigmentation for long-term durability and for solar reflection to avoid excessive temperatures, a durable polymer, limits on coefficient of thermal expansion to minimize buckling stresses, formulations with excellent initial and retained impact resistance, and a polymer base with sufficient glass transition temperature and buck-ling resistance to maintain shape at maximum solar heating for several decades of time. They estimated properties for 25 years with additive formulations containing fillers, polymers, polymer blends, and chlori-

nated PVC and their results show that promising materials to provide successful properties are a blend of PVC and poly-α-methylstyrene/acrylonitrile/styrene and chlorinated PVC, both filled with talc.

As mentioned in the Chairman’s message, the meetings of the Vinyl Division Board of Directors and TPC pro-vide excellent opportuni-ties to learn more about the industry, meet many new people and great contacts in the industry, and have some fun while advancing the technol-ogy of vinyl. Please get involved with the Vinyl Division. Pictures of BOD and TPC members during their meetings in Orlando are shown below:

Vinyl Plastics Board of Director Meeting MinutesMay 16, 2010 ANTEC Orlando

1. New invited/potential BOD members are Alan Gibb and Tom Tettamble.

2. Counselor’s report by B. Arendt

The Vinyl Plastic Division counselor position is now vacant as Bill is now one of the SPE VP’s. We need to elect a new counselor of this important position. Four people have expressed interest in this posi-tion - B. Paradis, M. Fisch, N. Ali, and Don Witenhafer.

The SPE organization lost money last year and membership is down about 15%, to about 15,000 members. In 2010 there are to be 20 scheduled topical conferences.

3. Minutes were approved as amended. Godwin with send corrected minutes to Randy for distribution

4. Vinyltec 2011 by D. Witenhafer of the South Texas Section.

The hotel for the Vinyltec has been selected, the Chateau Bourbon Hotel, located on Bourbon Street. A very low room rate has been negotiated; however the hotel will not accept a 30 day freedom to cancel clause in the contract. The BOD agreed with the contract terms and authorized Don to sign the contract. The potential liability in case we decide to cancel the contract could be $35,000, with 1/2 of the debt owed by the Vinyl Division, the other half by the South Texas Section.

Dick Grossman will be the treasurer for the conference

Donna Davis (South Texas) will be the publicity chairman. Donna wants to issue a call for papers at the 2010 Vinyltec meeting and has an idea of advertising the 2011 Vinyltec on room keys for those attending the 2010 Vinyltec in NJ.

Don also requested help with sponsors and exhibitors, and will try to sell the conference corporate sponsorship for >$20,000.

5. Treasure’s report

SPE MEMBERSHIP:WHAT GRADE

ARE YOU??The SPE has several grades of membership, ranging from student, to member, senior member, and emeritus. Work experience and educational credits determine what level of membership is available to you, and it is likely that many members have sufficient credits to become senior members. Why do this you may ask. Some of the benefits of the society, like awards, are tied to membership levels, so you do want to be enrolled at the highest level of membership appropriate. Upgrading membership is easily done through the web site.

Go to http://www.4spe.org/membercenter/membergrades.php. Examine the requirements for the various grades, and then if you need to upgrade your membership, hit the link under members-only services to go through the steps.
