General production advice ware potatoes

VIOLET QUEEN has a good dormancy.Allow the seed to acclimatize to the local conditions before planting.Do not store the seed potatoes lower than 5°C. Warm them up sufficiently before planting. When desprouting, avoid condensation on the tubers. Take the seed out of the (big) bags within one week after arrival and store in a ventilated area.Natural airflow is also allowed.Tuber and/or soil treatments are advised to control Rhizoctonia, Silver scurf and other soil borneskin diseases. Azoxystrobine as a soil application shows good results on many fungi. The best quality will be reached on fertile and light soil types.Planting with small white sprouts produces the best results.Don't use cut seed.

Weak foliage development, apply high initial dose of nitrogen. The use of metribuzin is recommended before emergence. When applying post emergence, use thelow dose system.Weather conditions have a strong influence on metribuzin effectivity, adapt dose to thecircumstances.Limit irrigation in second part of the season, to stimulate accumulation of dry matter.Irrigation results in a more uniform product with better cooking quality.Use products that have an effect on Alternaria solani and Alternaria alternata.Use a robust Phytophthora programme, to prevent foliage blight.

Aim for a dry matter content of 19,5 %.An unset skin will have a negative effect on storability. In general, VIOLET QUEEN has a good stolone detachment and early skin set. VIOLET QUEEN has a very high tuber number in small sizes, adapt harvest equipment to it.To keep a bright and smooth skin, the tubers should not be left too long in the soil after haulmkilling.

Storage

When product is stored temporarily, recommended temperature is 10°C.Because of the high tuber count in small sizes, storability needs extra attention to get enough dryingcapacity and avoid fast CO2 increase.Short ambient storage is possible. The tubers should be fully skin set before harvest.REFRIGERATED STORAGEPrevent dehydration, cool with a small difference between cooling air and product temperature.Reduce temperature 0,5 - 0,7 degrees a day, not lower than 4°C store temperature.Ventilate regularly, but briefly, to prevent CO2 accumulation. Any fluctuation in temperature, combined with condensation, can result in early sprouting and ahigh risk of Silver scurf.
