Most viral campaigns for films involve trying to create a buzz/excitement about the about a film before its release and there have been several examples of films that have successfully used this technique, such as Cloverfield, District 9 and Blair Witch. These are often very low budget films that would normally not get that much coverage but have been boosted by a strong viral marketing campaign.
