★★ Answer the following questions.

1 Why does Ted like it when a golf player has a bad

game?

2 Why does Ted begin work late in the morning?

3 Why do you need to be brave to be a golf ball diver?

2

★★ Find words in the text with a similar meaning to the

following words/phrases.

ñ Para A: leave for, wear, move on hands and knees

ñ Para B: unclean, depend

ñ Para C: gather, find by chance

ñ Para D: angry

3

★ Fill in: comes, crawl, puts, sets,

make.

1 Always ...................... sure

that your oxygen tank is

working before you go

underwater.

2 Lisa ...................... off for

school at half past eight

every morning.

3 Babies don’t walk. They

...................... .

4 The cleaner sometimes

...................... across

money on the office floor.

5 After his shower, Steve

...................... on his clothes

and goes downstairs.

4

★ Read the text and mark the statements (1-4) T (true) or

F (false).

1 There are 2.5 billion golf balls in the ponds

and lakes of American golf courses. ...........

2 Ted plays golf in the morning before

he goes to work. ...........

3 Ted searches for golf balls by feeling the

bottom of a pond with his hands. ...........

4 Ted earns more money when he collects

more golf balls. ...........

1

On weekdays, I set off for the golf course

at around 10 am. Many golfers play early in the

morning before they go to their office jobs, so I

usually wait until they leave before I begin work.

The first thing I do is put on my wetsuit and

oxygen tank. Then, I jump into a pond and dive

straight down to the bottom. There, I crawl

around on my hands and knees and look for

golf balls.

It’s not easy, though – it is extremely dark

down there because the water is dirty. Usually, I

can’t see anything and have to rely completely

on my sense of touch. Also, sometimes there

are dangerous animals in golf ponds in the USA,

including poisonous snakes and crocodiles!

You need to be very brave to do my job!

Most days, I work for 5 hours and collect

around 2,500 balls. The company I work for

pays me ten cents for each ball, so I get around

$250 each day. But golf balls aren’t the only

things I find in the ponds. Sometimes, I come

across computers, washing machines and even

cars!

Diving in the ponds of a golf course isn’t

the same as diving in the beautiful blue waters

of the Caribbean – but it’s still a great way for

divers to earn a lot of money. So don’t get

annoyed the next time you hit a golf ball into a

pond – you’re making sure that somebody like

me has a job!

Ted Becks loves it when golfers have a bad game. Every year, golfers in the USA lose over 2.5

billion golf balls. They hit many of them into golf course ponds and lakes – and that’s exactly

where Ted wants them! Here, Ted tells us all about his life as a golf ball diver.

T oday, over half the world’s population live in cities and the number is

growing all the time. This is called urbanisation. One reason people

are leaving the countryside is because jobs are not well-paid. The cities

offer a wide variety of jobs and better schools. But they often are

dangerous to live in and have pollution, too. Nearly a quarter of the world’s

850 million city dwellers live in slums*. Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya is the

second largest slum in Africa with a population of 170,000. Life isn’t easy

there. There are schools for children but the living conditions are terrible.

Most people don’t have electricity or running water. The streets are dirty

and homes are small shacks.

Tim lives in one of these shacks with his mother, father and sister. He

wakes up at 6 o’clock every morning because he has to be at school by

7:30. He gets back home at 3:30. He takes his dog Bingo for a walk and then

helps his mother with the chores. He has to carry water from one of Kibera’s

two water pipes so they can wash clothes and cook dinner. In the evenings, he

plays hide-and-seek with his friends because there are no sports facilities. Tim,

though, is one of the lucky ones; many children in Kibera live on the streets.

Life in Kibera shows the bad side of urbanisation. We need to improve the

conditions in cities. Fortunately for Kibera, the Kenyan government and various

charities are now working to do just that.

Tennis is over 700 years old and is one of the world’s

favourite sports. There are tennis clubs in almost every

country and millions of people can play the sport. As many

as 20 million people enjoy watching the big matches of a

championship like Wimbledon.

London is the home of the Wimbledon Championships.

No other championship is as old as Wimbledon – it is

nearly 150 years old. It is many people’s favourite

championship, but success at Wimbledon is not easy. A

player with a Wimbledon trophy is a tennis superstar.

Players win a lot of money there, too.

Tennis superstars have amazing skills. They can run fast,

jump high and play for hours. Sometimes, it’s

like they can read their opponent’s

thoughts. Roger Federer is like this. He

is one of the best tennis players in the

world. This winner of nearly every

championship, trophy and medal

in tennis is already a legend.

Safari in Kenya

Posted on 6th February by Rachel

We set off early this morning and I was so thrilled! Finally, after years of dreaming about it, I

was going on an African safari. As we drove across the land, I took in the awesome scenery:

tall trees, golden grass and misty mountains. It was a sight to see!

After driving for an hour, we came across a herd of zebras in the distance. They were drinking

from a water hole. We watched them for a while, admiring their unique black and white

stripes. Then suddenly, they all started running away. At first I couldn’t see what was

happening, but then I noticed a cheetah running after them at lightning speed. However, it

didn’t manage to catch one. Disappointed, it lay down under a tree and went to sleep.

We continued on our journey, passing giraffes, wild dogs and hippos. Then, as the sun began

to set we saw a herd of elephants. They walked past us silently and slowly, just a few metres

from the van! I wanted to reach out and touch them, but knew that it was against the safari

rules. Still, it was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to go out again tomorrow!

Right in the heart of the land

of the Navajo Indians in

Arizona, USA is a truly remarkable

geographical feature: Antelope

Canyon. Over a period of thousands

of years, the powerful forces of

rushing water and strong winds

carved and sculpted the sandstone

of this canyon through a process

called erosion. The result is the

smooth and wavy rocks that form

the canyon today.

Occasional sudden floods continue

to change the shape of the canyon.

The lighting inside the canyon

constantly changes as the sun

moves across the sky and the

sunlight jumps around the narrow canyon walls to create a dazzling

display of colour, light and shadow. It is this incredible display that

attracts thousands of visitors, photographers and nature

enthusiasts to the canyon each year. Tourists can only see the

canyon on a guided tour because there is danger of sudden

flooding. A walk in this canyon is a breathtaking tour through one of

nature’s incredible art galleries.

Tough men in cowboy hats and

dusty boots riding horses on the

open plains may seem like

something out of an American

history book, but life in the wild

west is still alive today on dude ranches across

America. A holiday at these ranches offers a small

taste of the way of life in the wild west. Visitors can try

cattle driving, test their rodeo skills, cook on an open

fire, camp out under the stars, and even learn country

dancing. All this and more in the comfort of these

ranches with the charm of the old west.

Most people go on holiday to relax on a beach or go

sightseeing in a city, but not me. Instead, I prefer a

holiday with a bit of adventure! However, the

most unforgettable trip was when I climbed Mount

Fuji in Japan.

I arrived at the foot of the mountain in the mid-

afternoon sun and looked up towards my goal.

With a blanket of clouds around its peak, it seemed

very far away. But this just made me want to climb it

even more! Without waiting a second longer, I walked

through the entrance and began my journey.

At the foot of the mountain there was a beautiful

forest. However, as I got closer to the top, the

scenery began to change. On top of that, the

temperature dropped sharply. It was like a

completely different world.

I made the last half of my journey in darkness with

only a headlamp to guide me. It was much more

difficult than I thought it would be. Step after

exhausted step I continued, until at last I reached the

top. By then, the morning sun was in the sky,

highlighting the tiny towns, lakes and forests below

me. I let out a huge cry. I truly was on top of the world!
