early13 200513 I13 was13 still13 living13 and13 working13 in13 Seattle13 and13 a13 co-shy‐worker13 of13 mine13 was13 describing13 how13 she13 and13 her13 boyfriend13 had13 created13 accounts13 in13 Second13 Life13 and13 were13 setting13 up13 house13 When13 I13 found13 out13 they13 paid13 a13 monthly13 fee13 for13 the13 privilege13 of13 leading13 this13 double13 life13 I13 admit13 I13 was13 a13 little13 incredulous13 and13 at13 the13 time13 couldnrsquot13 quite13 wrap13 my13 head13 around13 the13 concept13 Little13 did13 I13 know13 that13 a13 year13 later13 I13 would13 begin13 using13 the13 tool13 in13 a13 professional13 context13 13 My13 first13 few13 visits13 in13 Second13 Life13 were13 somewhat13 unremarkable13 My13 main13 motivation13 for13 exploring13 Second13 Life13 was13 finding13 a13 good13 platform13 for13 building13 ISTErsquos13 sense13 of13 community13 amongst13 members13 In13 mid13 200613 there13 were13 a13 few13 educational13 spaces13 starting13 to13 set13 up13 shop13 but13 only13 a13 small13 handful13 of13 educators13 in13 world13 at13 any13 given13 time13 Seeing13 what13 could13 be13 built13 intrigued13 me13 and13 appealed13 to13 my13 interest13 in13 design13 and13 programming13 Still13 it13 was13 a13 lonely13 affair13 in13 those13 early13 days13 and13 I13 considered13 looking13 for13 other13 tools13 and13 letting13 the13 whole13 Second13 Life13 idea13 go13 by13 the13 wayside13 That13 is13 until13 I13 ran13 into13 my13 first13 ISTE13 member13 quite13 by13 accident13 on13 EduNationrsquos13 island13 We13 chatted13 for13 about13

After13 a13 few13 more13 of13 these13 interactions13 I13 started13 putting13 the13 word13 out13 through13 the13 grapevine13 that13 ISTE13 would13 be13 interested13 in13 renting13 some13 land13 and13 connecting13 with13 educators13 in13 world13 We13 werenrsquot13 sure13 what13 would13 come13 of13 it13 but13 we13 were13 open13 to13 experimenting13 We13 were13 lucky13 enough13 to13 be13 introduced13 to13 Lori13 Bell13 who13 had13 set13 up13 an13 island13 for13 librarians13 and13 was13 about13 to13 launch13 a13 new13 space13 called13 EduIsland13 We13 quickly13 jumped13 at13 the13 chance13 to13 become13 a13 tenant13 and13 started13 building13 our13 virtual13 presence13

13 In13 those13 early13 days13 we13 really13 felt13 like13 pioneersmdashthere13 was13 a13 strong13

sense13 of13 community13 on13 EduIsland13 and13 the13 tenants13 all13 helped13 each13 other13 learn13 how13 to13 navigate13 in13 this13 new13 environment13 marveled13 at13 each13 otherrsquos13 projects13 and13 sometimes13 grumbled13 at13 conflicting13 events13 that13 created13 full13 sims13 and13 locked13 out13 participants13 (just13 a13 sign13 of13 the13 growing13 popularity)13 As13 ISTE13 started13 hosting13 a13 weekly13 social13 event13 in13 January13 of13 200713 and13 soon13 after13 a13 weekly13 speaker13 series13 session13 the13 sense13 of13 community13 grewmdashPeggy13 Sheehy13

Before13 we13 made13 the13 transition13 over13 to13 our13 new13 island13 we13 recognized13 that13 we13 needed13 a13 way13 to13 handle13 all13 the13 newly13 generated13 interest13 from13 members13 and13 educators13 coming13 in13 to13 Second13 Life13 in13 droves13 Staff13 could13 only13 be13 at13 the13 building13 certain13 hours13 (usually13 in13 the13 evenings)13 and13 there13 were13 many13 hours13 throughout13 the13 day13 when13 the13 building13 would13 be13 empty13 I13 remembered13 my13 first13 few13 forays13 into13 Second13 Life13 and13 how13 lonely13 it13 was13 on13 most13 islands13 and13 how13 thrilling13 it13 was13 to13 talk13 to13 real13 personmdashnot13 just13 a13 person13 but13 a13 peermdashand13 I13 knew13 that13 was13 the13 key13 to13 making13 our13 space13 a13 vibrant13 one13 After13 putting13 out13 a13 query13 to13 our13 group13 I13 was13 happily13 surprised13 at13 the13 overwhelming13 response13 About13 3013 people13 were13 interested13 in13 signing13 up13 for13 regular13 ldquodocentrdquo13 shifts13 to13 greet13 visitors13 and13 help13 them13 get13 started13 in13 Second13 Life13 This13 was13 before13 the13 days13 of13 voice13 in13 Second13 Life13 of13 course13 so13 those13 early13 training13 sessions13 with13

With13 the13 docent13 program13 up13 and13 running13 regular13 programming13 and13 socials13 happening13 each13 week13 and13 a13 look13 ahead13 to13 the13 upcoming13 NECC13 in13 Atlanta13 we13 set13 about13 creating13 the13 islandmdashlandscaping13 terraforming13 and13 envisioning13 spaces13 that13 would13 best13 support13 connecting13 and13 learning13 together13 Why13 set13 up13 traditional13 meeting13 rooms13 when13 yoga13 treehouses13 perched13 high13 upon13 pine13 trees13 and13 looking13 out13 over13 the13 crashing13 surf13 could13 serve13 the13 same13 purpose13 Why13 have13 formal13 conference13 tables13 when13 crackling13 campfire13 circles13 work13 so13 much13 better13 13

One13 of13 my13 all-shy‐time13 favorite13 projects13 was13 building13 the13 Alamo13 to13 coincide13 with13 ISTErsquos13 conference13 in13 San13 Antonio13 in13 200813 Working13 with13 the13 talented13 Malinda13 McCormick13 of13 the13 local13 San13 Antonio13 PBS13 a13 generous13 builder13 who13 created13 the13 major13 structures13 and13 scores13 of13 ISTE13 volunteers13 we13 replicated13 the13 grounds13 of13 the13 Alamo13 down13 to13 the13 smallest13 detail13 right13 down13 to13 artifacts13 and13 additional13 learning13 resources13 in13 each13 of13 the13 buildings13 During13 the13 opening13 reception13 of13 the13 200813 conference13 we13 hosted13 a13 mixed13 reality13 event13 in13 which13 we13 recreated13 the13 live13 band13 playing13 in13 San13 Antonio13 streamed13 the13 live13 band13 into13 Second13 Life13 and13 displayed13 the13 in13 world13 reception13 on13 large13 monitors13 next13 to13 the13 physical13 world13 band13 We13 were13 pushing13 on13 the13 technology13 so13 hard13 during13 that13 event13 that13 I13 ended13 up13 with13 a13 fried13 motherboard13 before13 the13 end13 of13 the13 evening13 but13 a13 volunteer13 generously13 stepped13 forward13 with13 a13 quick13 replacement13 to13 get13 through13 the13 rest13 of13 the13 event13 which13 was13 a13 success13 13

I remember The Alamo

No this isnrsquot in reference to the classic line from the movie ldquoPee Weersquos Big Adventurerdquo although there were many big adventures on ISTE

Island The Alamo build at ISTE Island was a stepping stone for me in so many ways but also a powerful symbol of the work and meaning that many of us do with virtual world education

As a ldquonewbierdquo when the Alamo exhibit was created in 2008 I was captivated by the thought of being able to re-create such a powerful piece of American history through a virtual world I remember touring the space with my avatar clicking on the links and notecard givers and interviewing some of the tour guides Here the realization came to me that I was hooked on Virtual Environment Education If this simple structure could be captured think what else could be done And this was the beginning of the group I would later found The Virtual Pioneers As a matter of fact our grouprsquos name came from the pioneering spirit of the western settlers Our group remains strong and vibrant with new members showing up at our meetings and tours As of this writing my work continues beyond Virtual Pioneers with my student-centered work on the Islands of Enlightenment This space is dedicated to bringing students into historical builds like the Secret Annex detailed in ldquoThe Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frankrdquo To watch students faces as they interact and create powerful narrative content using avatars is an amazing way to bring history to life

The kernel of that idea all began with the Alamo Exhibit Perhaps had I not seen that I would have harbored my first impressions that virtual worlds were nonsense and had no role in education Yet the pioneering analogy carries on in various ways with virtual environment educators doesnrsquot it When our SIGVE Task Force meetings were going on we often discussed the pioneer notion of the work we are doing And that analogy is so powerful for those of us that use and believe that virtual environments offer great avenues for learning for students AND adults We are doing the pioneering work in so many ways We are often dismissed and ridiculed like all pioneers are but we know better donrsquot we Why Because we have looked over the mountain and seen the other side that other educators have only guessed at So carry on we must

Perhaps The Alamo represents our current state doesnrsquot it As we leave behind ISTE Island we could easily be daunted and depressed over its loss as that of the Alamorsquos tragic history Yet our pioneer spirit remains intact just as Americarsquos pioneer spirit

So yes I remember the Alamo and I will always remember ISTE Island and its inspiration to my ideas and the awesome collaborations I have made since then

But what remains is so much more meaningful for I have great

13 Name David Dixon Why13 Are13 You13 Here13 I teach graphic design illustration and related computer art courses at East Tennessee State University I began using Second Life to stay informed of emerging graphics technologies and found it to be a fascinating platform for testing and sharing creative ideas I maintain a virtual gallery on the ETSU site that includes a variety of student work graphic designs illustrations paintings drawings and photographs13 I use the Second Life gallery as a resource for demonstration purposes and as a virtual studio for student projects Students gain practice in using conventional graphics software for creating designs in RL and use the virtual gallery as a venue for presentation Students have tested their logo designs on t-shirts created in my Graphic Design I class They have also used the building tools to make 3d models that would be cost-prohibitive and wasteful to produce in RL such as human-scaled point-of-purchase displays for my Display and Package Design class My illustration class has used SL for creating illustrated narratives too taking snapshots to use in scenes that would be impossible in RL

I have found that some students love it and some students hate it for a variety of different reasons But either way they are discovering the new and important role graphic design and illustration skills play in emerging technologies for visual communication
