December, 2020

November reminds us that Advent will arrive soon. And, at St. Thomas,’ that points to the traditional Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols, with our choir and parish readers. While that pesky Covid virus has robbed us of many much-loved traditions, we invite you to mark you calendar for the first Sunday in December, when we will once again celebrate Lessons and Carols, but in a different way.

Our own super-talented organist, June Burbage, has arranged a program of outstanding music for that Sunday.

Featured musicians include:

June Burbage, Organ

Deb Heyvaert, Piano Karen Huey, Viola Debbie White, Violin David Oh, Cellist (guest)

Melissa Mitchell, Percussionist (guest)

Our choir will miss sharing music with the parish this year, but we

are grateful to the talented musicians, and to Fr. Bruce Heyvaert, who has agreed to read the Advent lessons.

So mark your calendar—On Sunday, December 6, at 10:00 am, we will have a

special virtual service of Advent Lessons and Carols. Invite your friends and family to celebrate this annual arrival of Advent. Watch for detailed announcements in our weekly email blasts.

The congregation of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church is blessed to have much talent in its midst, and at the forefront of talented individuals is Barbara Massengill. She has created an heirloom quilt for the Red Door Bazaar for the

third year, and through her generosity, has raised thousands of dollars for the church and for local non-profit organizations. Although our bazaar was postponed this year, Barbara has completed her quilt, shown below, and is already planning and stockpiling designs for the next few years. When asked why she does so much, she answered, “Because I have to! My needlework provides “fertilizer” for my growth and development.”

Originally from California, Barbara bounced around the nation and landed in Maryland where she met Alan, the love of her life, raised four boys and worked as a court reporter for 30 years. As she reminisces, “When we retired in 1999, we hit the road in our motorhome, towing our motorcycles and full-timed for three years, racking up over 100,000 miles between the RV and the bikes. It was an incredible three years of checking experiences off our bucket list, and I highly recommend it to anyone who can stand to be with their spouse 24/7 in 400 square feet.” Yes, each of them had their own Harley-Davidson bikes because Alan said that he did not want to ride on the back of Barbara’s!

In 2005, Barbara and Alan took a cross-country motorcycle trip

through the Canadian Rockies to San Francisco. They continued to travel with cycles and RV until 2013.

According to Barbara, “We ended up in North Carolina mostly because Alan was a Tar Heel, and I had a dear friend living in Carolina Trace where we chose to build our house. We joined St. Thomas’ in 2010 after having been recalcitrant Episcopalians for some years. It was good to be back! I found the Episcopal faith in my twenties while searching for a church in Honolulu. It was an emotional experience for me, so I knew immediately I was in the right place.”

Barbara’s love of quilting began in 1980 when she sought a log cabin quilt in specific colors. She took a class to make her own—and was hooked. Barbara stated, “I love making the raffle quilts for St. Thomas’. The 2020 raffle quilt was completed last spring and I will hold on to it until such time that it can be raffled. I’m calling it ‘Crown Him with Many Crowns.’ The pattern was titled ‘Corona,’ but under the circumstances, I think all would prefer my title. I’ve started on the 2021 raffle quilt. If this COVID stuff continues, we might have to have three or four raffles a year.”

Hand-crafted quilts, especially of the quality that Barbara produces, are quite valuable. Raw material supplies alone can easily top over $500, so the appraisal value of quilts can be anywhere from $1000 to $7000. To be the recipient of one of these quilts is priceless.

Barbara is currently chairman of the Altar Guild, and is participating in the project to replace the current kneelers with new custom needlepoint kneelers.

Barbara misses her St. Thomas’ family, but in the meantime, “’l’ll just keep needling.” We can’t wait until we have a chance to win one of her masterpieces!
