While the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic is nominally a subcompact, the inevitable "bracket creep" in car sizes means the Sonic is almost the size that some compacts were 10 years ago. Still, the Cruze four-door sedan that sits above it in the Chevy lineup is considerably larger, and the Spark minicar below is smaller--so the Sonic benefits in comparison to the smaller competitors in this increasingly important segment.

The 2014 Sonic is usually cross-shopped with cars like the Ford Fiesta--which was substantially updated this year--the aging Honda Fit that will be replaced next year, the Hyundai Accent, both the Nissan Versa sedan and Versa Note hatchback, and the Toyota Yaris. But the Sonic has proven to be a far better car--it's one of our favorites in the class--than the cheap and unsophisticated Aveo that it replaced.

For 2014, Chevy offers the Bringgo navigation app for the Sonic as well as the Spark minicar, where it launched last year. For a one-time $50 fee, drivers can run Bringgo on their smartphones, which plug into the dash and display both maps and routing on the MyLink display. It's an inexpensive way to add navigation at a much lower cost, and we think the "smartphone, dumb screen" model will spread rapidly among tech-savvy consumers.
