It is 1874, and we currently live in England and we

have decided to leave our homeland and venture out to start a

new life in the United States of America. We have dreamed of

heading to the West Coast of California as stories of riches af-

ter the Gold Rush still remain. However, we come from a poor

background and have no means to pay for our passage on one

of these “fancy” steamships we have heard so much about.

Recently we have heard of the sailing emigrant ship the

“Star of India.” Rumor has it that after she drops her emigrants

off in New Zealand she will be picking up cargo in Australia.

From there she will possibly head west to California seeking a

market for her goods. Here is our opportunity! We convince

the Mate of the “Star of India” to accept us as a working crew

so that we may pay for our voyage and make our way to our

new life.

As a result, on November 14, 2014, our fifth grade class

embarked on this overnight journey on the “Star of India.” It

also happened to be the “Star of India’s” 150th birthday on that

same day.

I would like to say thank you to all my parents who

drove and chaperoned.

Mrs. Stephens

The day is upon us! Just as a friendly reminder to our families, we will be celebrating our Christ-mas Carols and Lessons program at 7:00pm in the church. Grades Preschool, JK, and K-5 will meet in their classrooms beginning at 6:30pm. Grades 6-8 will meet at the church.

GSCS students will have assigned seating and are to arrive no later than 6:45pm.

Student attire for this event must be appropriate for church. Jeans or T-shirts are not allowed.

For parents, you are welcome to take pictures and video of these performances, but we ask you refrain from using flash photog-raphy during each performance to keep from distracting the stu-dents as they sing.

We look forward to seeing you all there! -Mr. Banayat

Marc Akiyama (GSCS class of 2007) will be graduating from NYU in May 2015, as a percussion performance major. He has been refining his mallet skills on marimba, tympani, and steel drums under world-renown timpanist Jonathan Haas. Marc is also studying music compo-

sition and film scoring. A three-year project that is now coming to fruition as a stop-motion movie features his original compositions that are based on his version of Red Riding Hood. These songs were recorded in the studio this past summer, and the stop-motion production is underway. Aside from numerous ensemble practices and con-certs, Marc is preparing for his Senior Percussion Recital in May. After graduation, Marc intends to pursue his music and film interests. Landon Akiyama (GSCS class of 2009) is studying music in New York, having spent his freshman year at Wagner College, and is also studying guitar with jazz guitar virtu-oso and composer Peter Mazza. He has also been busy writing new original songs. Landon was cast in an IBM commercial “Music Made with Cloud,” which aired interna-tionally during major sporting events, including the U.S. Open, FIFA World Cup in Bra-zil, and sports events in Europe. When not in New York, Landon is busy performing live at local venues and collaborating on Marc’s Red Riding Hood Project. Landon in-tends to add music entrepreneurship to supplement the music major. Marc and Landon have collaborated together since taking the stage together at Good Shepherd as a talent show act and continue to perform live locally. As for the future, Marc and Landon hope to establish their own recording and production company to pursue their musical and artistic inter-ests. Hello GSCS families, This is a follow up communication to the eScrip presentation given at our last PTG meeting. eScrip is proven to be a fantastic resource for fundraising where participating business part-ners contribute a percentage of your grocery loyalty cards (Vons and Fresh and Easy in our area), credit card, and debit/ATM card purchases to our school. Some merchants include favorites like Amazon, Target, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Expedia, Groupon, and many more. If you like to dine out, there are several restaurants such as Buca di Beppo, the Broken Yolk Cafe, L&L Hawaiian BBQ, Crab Catcher, and the Burger Lounge that provide credit back through the eScrip Dining program. The only way the school and you can benefit is by enrolling and registering your cards through www.escrip.com . You can earn back up to 16% of your total charges towards your book fee obliga-tion, simply by making your everyday purchases. No fee to join and no card or badge to car-ry. With the holidays right around the corner, this is the perfect time to get started! Simply follow the registration instructions from this link: https://secure.escrip.com/supporter/registration/index.jsp All you need to do is: #1 Enter your contact information and create a username and password #2 Select “Good Shepherd Catholic School Boosters” for your group and check the box #3 Enter your “Vons” grocery card number and/or your “Fresh and Easy Friends” card number.

If you don’t know those numbers, contact the following:

Vons – 877-723-3939

Fresh and Easy – 877-338-6546

Special note: Vons will only give eScrip credit for cash, debit cards, checks and gift cards. Credit card purchases will not count towards eScrip.

You may also enter any credit card numbers that you want registered for the eScrip dining pro-gram. This will enable you to get credit from restaurants simply by paying with those cards.

Once you are registered, you can purchase away. You just have to remember to start from www.escrip.com first and click on the eScrip Online Mall link.

You then click on your merchant of choice. The % of credit is also next to each merchant, e.g.) Nordstrom gives you 4.8% back. You will then be directed to that merchant’s website.

PRAYER FOR THE ELECTION OF A BISHOP O God, eternal shepherd,

who govern your flock with unfailing care,

grant in your boundless fatherly love

a bishop for your Church in San Diego

who will please you by his holiness

and to us show watchful care.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever. Amen

From the Roman Missal

A thought for reflection: “Let us stand fast in what is right and prepare our souls for trial. Let us be

neither dogs that do not bark or silent onlookers nor paid servants who run away before the wolf.” St.

Boniface
