What’s New in this Release?

New functions and features

Scanning only vulnerable file typesPrevious release You could configure the scanner to examine all file types, or examine

only those types whose extensions appeared in a user-definable list, accessed by a button labeled Program files only.

Current release • You can select a new option, Default files, that examines only file types that McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team) defines as vulnerable to infection from currently circulating viruses. The list of vulnerable file types is included with the release of updated virus definition (.DAT) files. This option is the default selection.

• The user-definable list of extensions is now called User specified files.

Benefits Scanning all files provides the most comprehensive virus protection policy, but it adds the greatest amount of overall processing time devoted to virus scanning activities.

• Scanning only the file types that appear on a user-definable list lets you exclude types that are not considered vulnerable to virus infections.

• Scanning default files provides the most economical and efficient virus protection policy because it focuses on file types that are vulnerable to the viruses that are currently circulating in the field.

Where to find For on-access scanning: 1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. Double-click VShield to open the Status pages for the installed scanning modules. In most cases, the System Scan Status page appears first.

3. Click Properties to open the properties pages for the installed scanning modules. In most cases the System Scan Properties page appears first, with the Detection tab visible.

For on-demand scanning:1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan or

VirusScan Console.

2. Double-click a scanning task listed in the Console. Two scanning tasks are listed — Scan My Computer and Scan Drive ‘C’.

What’s New in this Release?

Using passive FTPPrevious release Downloading files via FTP was possible using active FTP only.

Current release Passive FTP is the default selection for AutoUpdate, AutoUpgrade and the new Mirror utility, which is described summarily on page 13 and in detail in Chapter 4 starting on page 43. You can deselect Use passive FTP in situations where active FTP is required.

Benefits • Passive FTP is particularly effective in environments using firewalls or proxies because the client opens both the command session and the data session. This eliminates firewall or proxy interference with client/server communication.

• Some networks have only active FTP available, where the client opens the command session, and the server opens the data session. In such cases, you can deselect the passive FTP option. Active FTP transmissions are likely to be subjected to firewall or proxy interference.

Where to find 1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. Double-click AutoUpdate to open the Task Properties dialog box.

3. Click Configure to open the VirusScan AutoUpdate property pages.

4. Click Add to configure a new download site, or Edit to modify an existing entry.

What’s New in this Release?

Updating the scanning engine with the .DAT filesPrevious release The AutoUpdate utility could find, download, and install only the .DAT

files from the Network Associates FTP site. Upgrading the scanning engine was only possible with release of an upgraded version of the full product, or, for an interim release of the engine, by running the stand-alone McAfee SuperDAT utility.

Current release When configuring AutoUpdate, you can now select Update scanning engine if newer scanning engine exists. This feature does not require user action to invoke the SuperDAT engine-upgrade functionality.

Benefits • You can include an interim release of the scanning engine when you update the .DAT files.

• You don’t need a special utility to upgrade the engine.

• You don’t have to wait for a new release of the product to receive an enhanced engine.

• You can economize bandwidth because AutoUpdate identifies and downloads only .DATs and engine if they are more recent than those that your system is currently using.

Where to find 1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. Double-click AutoUpdate to open the Task Properties dialog box.

3. Click Configure to open the VirusScan AutoUpdate property pages.

4. Create an update site, or select a site already listed on the Update Sites page. The Network Associates download site appears in the list. You can add up to 16 sites to this list.

5. Select the Advanced tab. The new option is listed under Advanced Update Options.

For more information Chapter 3, “Updating your .DAT files,” starting on page 31.

What’s New in this Release?

Creating a mirror of the Network Associates update sitePrevious release • The network administrator could designate a network location as a

source site for update files by selecting Save the Update file for later usage.

• The .DAT files were first updated on the computer used to configure the update, then the contents of the Network Associates FTP site that contains the .DAT files were copied to the designated network location.

• The network location was a virtual replica or mirror of the Network Associates site.

Current release • The current release provides a new interface and new functionality for creating a mirror of the Network Associates update site. You can now set up mirroring functionality using a series of configuration pages that are similar in design and function to the new AutoUpdate configuration pages.

• If installing VirusScan via ePolicy Orchestrator, the default installation includes the Mirror utility.

• If installing VirusScan via the Setup wizard, you can include mirroring functionality by performing a custom installation and selecting Mirror Task for inclusion.

NOTE: To locate Mirror Task on the Custom Setup page, expand the Console branch of the tree view, then expand the McUpdate branch. Click the Mirror Task icon and select This feature will be installed on local hard drive. For information on performing a custom installation, see page 25.

Benefits • Permits updating of any computer on your network whether or not it has internet access.

• Permits faster downloading by allowing your workstations to communicate with a server that may be closer than a Network Associates FTP server.

What’s New in this Release?

TIP: A new command-line switch, /BATCH, allows you to run the AutoUpdate, AutoUpgrade, and Mirror utilities in unattended mode from the command line, a login script or a batch file. Dialog boxes appear as the task progresses, and the final status dialog box closes automatically 2 seconds after the task completes. The syntax for this switch depends on which task you are defining:

MCUPDATE /TASK UPDATE /BATCH

MCUPDATE /TASK UPGRADE /BATCH

MCUPDATE /TASK MIRROR /BATCH

Where to find You can access the feature using VirusScan Console or ePolicy Orchestrator.VirusScan:

1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. In the Console window, double-click Mirror to open the Task Properties dialog box.

3. Click Configure to open the Mirror AutoUpdate Site property pages. The Source Sites tab is visible.

4. Click Add to open the Mirror Options page.

5. Define a site from which your mirror server can download the contents of the Network Associates FTP download site.

6. Select the Destination tab to specify the path of the folder on the mirror server to which you are downloading the contents of the Network Associates FTP download site.

ePolicy Orchestrator:1. Open the ePolicy Orchestrator Scheduler.

2. Select Mirror AutoUpdate Site in the Task Type field.

For more information Chapter 4, “Creating a mirror of the NAI update site,” starting on page 43.

What’s New in this Release?

Configuring AutoUpdatePrevious release • You could designate up to eight sites from which to download the

update files.

• You could choose to transfer the update files via FTP from a remote network computer, or by copying the files from a local network computer.

• You could retrieve the update files but not perform the update, saving the files for later use. This allowed the creation of a virtual replica of the Network Associates download site.

• You could elect to allow the software to reboot your system after a successful update.

Current release • The AutoUpdate configuration pages appear in a new interface, which closely resembles the design of the new Mirror utility.

• You can designate up to 16 sites from which to retrieve the update files.

• You can choose to transfer the update files via FTP from any computer to which you have access; by copying the files from a shared location on a local computer using UNC; or from a location on the computer you are using to configure AutoUpdate.

• The new Mirror utility replaces the option of retrieving the update files for later use.

• There is no longer any need to reboot your computer after a successful update.

• This release permits you to upgrade the scanning engine at the same time you update the .DAT files. This feature is described in greater detail under “Updating the scanning engine with the .DAT files” on page 12.

• The current release allows use of passive FTP for .DAT file transfers. This new feature is described in greater detail under “Using passive FTP” on page 11.

Benefits • The interface for configuring AutoUpdate, and its companion feature, mirroring, is easier to use than the previous interface.

• You can designate more download sites.

• There is no need to reboot your computer after updating.

• You can download a new scanning engine simultaneously with the new .DAT files.

• You can use passive FTP for file transfers.

What’s New in this Release?

Running a program after updating or upgradingPrevious release • You could designate a program to run after a successful update.

• You could not designate a program to run after an upgrade.

Current release • By default, the program runs whether or not the update was successful. You can now specify that you want the program to run only after a successful update.

• You can select a program to run after an upgrade, whether or not the upgrade was successful.

Benefits • You can designate a program to run after an update or an upgrade.

• You can specify that you want the program to run only if the updating or upgrading task is successful.

NOTE: If you choose to run a program after AutoUpdate or AutoUpgrade, it is essential that a user be logged on the system at the time the program is to run. If there is no currently logged-on user, the program does not run. This requirement prevents a user with limited rights from gaining access to the full rights of the system account, which is in control of the system when no user is currently logged on.

Where to find 1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. In the Console window, select AutoUpdate (or AutoUpgrade) to open the Task Properties dialog box.

3. Click Configure to open the property pages for the selected task.

4. Click Add to open the Site Options property page.

5. Define a site from which the computers on your network can retrieve the updating or upgrading files.

6. Select the Advanced tab to specify additional options.

What’s New in this Release?

Scheduling a scan of a network drivePrevious release The on-demand scanner did not include the functionality to

successfully scan a network drive in a Windows NT or Windows 2000 environment. A scheduled task requires that a user be logged on at the time scheduled for the scan. If the user who configured the task was not logged on at run time, the scan failed.

Current release The current release allows association of a particular user account with the scheduled scanning activity. At the scheduled time, the scanner uses the specified account to perform the scan.

Benefits • Facilitates scheduling of remote scanning activities in Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments.

• Allows you to designate either the current logged-on account or a different account with rights in the target domain (not available in the ePolicy Orchestrator product).

Where to find 1. Start > Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

2. Select an on-demand scanning task. The default scanning tasks are called Scan My Computer, and Scan Drive ‘C’. The Task Properties dialog box opens.

3. Select the Schedule tab.

4. Click Advanced to open the Logon account dialog box.

Installation

System requirementsYou can install and run VirusScan software on any IBM PC or PC-compatible computer equipped with:

• A processor equivalent to an Intel Pentium-class or compatible processor. McAfee recommends an Intel Pentium processor or Celeron processor with a minimum of 166MHZ.

• A CD-ROM drive if you are installing the program from the CD.

• At least 55MB of hard disk space for a full installation of the software. Assure that sufficient disk space remains after installation for optimum performance of all programs.

• At least 16MB of RAM. For information on optimal OS performance, review Microsoft’s guidelines for minimum RAM configuration.

• Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows Millennium Edition.

• Microsoft Internet Explorer v4.0.1 or later.

You can upgrade to this version of the VirusScan software if you are currently running VirusScan 4.0.3, 4.0.3a, or 4.5. You cannot upgrade to this version from VirusScan versions earlier than 4.0.3, nor from VirusScan TC version 6. If you want to replace those versions, uninstall them before attempting to install the VirusScan 4.5.1 software.

Things to know before you begin• This release includes a new feature that allows you to create a mirror of the

Network Associates FTP site, which contains the most current .DAT files. For detailed information, see Chapter 4.

– If installing VirusScan using ePolicy Orchestrator, the default installation includes the Mirror utility.

– To include the Mirror feature when using the Setup wizard to install VirusScan, you must perform a custom installation and select Mirror Task for inclusion. To locate the Mirror Task on the Custom Setup page, expand the Console branch of the tree view, then expand the McUpdate branch. Click the Mirror Task icon and select This feature will be installed on local hard drive. For information on performing a custom installation, see page 25.

Page 22: VirusScan Release Guide Version 4.5download.nai.com/...english_us/virusscan/mcafee_versions/.../vsc45… · Release Guide iii Contents Preface . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Installation

• The VirusScan Installer includes an Uninstaller function that removes previously installed anti-virus software, including McAfee and Dr Solomon’s VirusScan v4.5, and other anti-virus software products produced by McAfee, Dr Solomon, and most other major manufacturers.

– If you performing a silent installation, the uninstaller will automatically remove all previously installed anti-virus software.

– If you are using SETUP.EXE to install the product, and SETUP detects a previously installed anti-virus product, you are prompted to confirm its removal from your system.

– If the previous version is VirusScan 4.0.3 or VirusScan 4.5, you must agree to its removal before SETUP can install VirusScan 4.5.1.

– If the previous version is VirusScan TC, SETUP will fail.

– If the previous installation is not a McAfee anti-virus product, and you do not agree to its removal, SETUP will install VirusScan 4.5.1. However, multiple anti-virus programs on the same system can generate fatal interactions. McAfee does not support VirusScan 4.5.1 on a system where another anti-virus software product is also present.

– In the unusual situation where the previous installation was a McAfee retail anti-virus product, such as VirusScan v5, the uninstallation may generate a Dr Watson, or simply fail. McAfee recommends that previously installed retail versions be removed using the Windows Add/Remove Programs feature before installing VirusScan.

– When the Uninstaller removes some anti-virus software programs, it may trigger the uninstallation process native to those programs. As a result, rebooting may occur without warning.

– In most environments, the uninstaller removes any language version of the previously installed VirusScan software. However, for versions 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 of McAfee and Dr Solomon’s software, and for other manufacturer’s software, the uninstaller removes only the English version.

– If the uninstaller cannot remove a non-English version, or if the software has not been manufactured by McAfee or Dr Solomon’s, we recommend that you use the Windows Add/Remove Programs feature to uninstall the older product before installing VirusScan 4.5.1.

– Rather than remove a previous installation of VirusScan 4.5.0, Setup upgrades the already installed product.

Installation

– If your system includes VirusScan 4.0.3, the installer makes a copy of your scanner settings before removing the application. Later in the installation process, you are given an opportunity to preserve a number of the scanner settings and apply them to the new installation of VirusScan 4.5.1.

• Setup checks whether your system is running the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) v1.1 utility. This utility must be present before installation can proceed. Windows 2000 Professional includes the correct MSI version. If your computer includes an earlier MSI version, Setup automatically installs the correct version.

• Setup may require you to restart your computer. For a list of circumstances in which rebooting may be required, see “Determining when to restart your computer” on page 29.

Installing the software1. Close all other applications running on your system. This reduces the

possibility of software conflicts that can interfere with the installation.

NOTE: For Windows NT Workstation v4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional systems, you must have administrative rights. Log on using Administrator credentials in either of these operating systems.

2. Start the Setup wizard in one of the following ways:

From the CD:

a. Insert the CD in the appropriate drive on you computer.

b. After the VirusScan welcome window appears, click Install to open the Setup wizard.

If the welcome image does not appear, locate and double-click the file SETUP.EXE on the CD.

From a downloaded .ZIP archive:

a. Make a new, temporary folder on your hard disk.

b. Use WinZip, PKZIP, or a similar utility to extract the VirusScan installation files to that temporary folder.

c. Locate and double-click the file SETUP.EXE in the temporary folder to start the Setup wizard.

Installation

Preserving your settingsIf Setup detects VirusScan 4.5.0 or 4.0.3 on your system, it displays Previous Version Detected, and lets you preserve the settings from your previous installation. The table below shows the settings that can be preserved.

Determining when to restart your computerIn many circumstances, you can install and use this VirusScan release immediately, without needing to restart your computer. In some cases, however, the Microsoft Installer (MSI) needs to replace or initialize certain files, or previous McAfee product installations might require that you remove files for VirusScan software to run correctly. These requirements can vary for each supported Windows platform. In these cases, you will need to restart your system during the installation — usually to install MSI files — or after the installation itself.

TIP: Whenever Setup requires a reboot, the following registry key appears, displaying the value “1”:

33Updating your .DAT files

OverviewThis chapter describes changes in the procedure for downloading new virus definition files (.DAT files) to the computers on your network. In general, the configuration instructions are applicable whether you are viewing the interface in your Windows Server native environment, or within the ePolicy Orchestrator environment. However, in the ePolicy Orchestrator environment, ignore instructions that refer to a Browse or Default button.

NOTE: The information in this chapter replaces the instructions that appear in the following sections of the VirusScan version 4.5 documentation:

• User’s Guide, Chapter 7, “Understanding the AutoUpdate Utility” and “Configuring the AutoUpdate Utility”

• Administrator’s Guide, Chapter 6, “Understanding the AutoUpdate Utility” and “Configuring the AutoUpdate Utility”

• Configuration Guide for use with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Software, Chapter 8, “Configuring automatic .DAT updates” and “Configuring advanced update options.”

Virus definition files appear on the Network Associates FTP site at ftp.nai.com/virusdefs/4.x. The site includes three types of .DAT files:

• Ordinary .DAT files, labeled DAT-XXXX.ZIP (or DAT-XXXX.TAR,) where XXXX is a series number that changes with each .DAT file release.

• SuperDAT files, labeled SDATXXXX.EXE. SuperDAT is a utility that updates your .DAT files to the version represented by XXXX, and also upgrades your scanning engine if the engine on the Network Associates site is newer than the one currently in use on your computer.

• Incremental .DAT files, labeled XXXXXXXX.UPD. Incremental .DAT files are the files released between the .DAT files now in use on your system and the most current .DAT files available. Here, the first four X characters represent the .DAT version now in use on your computer. The second four X characters represent the most current .DAT files available.

The FTP site also contains two *.INI files. AutoUpdate uses these files to choose the most efficient update pattern based on the scope of updating required and on your AutoUpdate configuration choices. The update patterns include:

Release Guide 31

Page 32: VirusScan Release Guide Version 4.5download.nai.com/...english_us/virusscan/mcafee_versions/.../vsc45… · Release Guide iii Contents Preface . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Updating your .DAT files

• Replacing all the .DAT files currently in use, but not upgrading the scanning engine.

• Replacing all the .DAT files, and simultaneously upgrading the scanning engine.

• Inserting only the incremental changes required to make your system current.

The *.INI files are:

• UPDATE.INI, which lists the current .DAT files and engine available on the Network Associates FTP site. AutoUpdate reads this file to determine its updating objectives and the files available.

• DELTA.INI, which lists the incremental .DAT files available to fill the gap between the files now in use and the most current files.

The Automatic .DAT Update utility downloads the necessary files, stops the on-access scanner, installs the revised files, then restarts the on-access scanner. The scanner then uses the revised files immediately.

This release includes an interface for creating a mirror of the Network Associates FTP site. The new mirroring function is described in Chapter 4, “Creating a mirror of the NAI update site,” starting on page 43.

If you plan to use a mirror site on your network, you must:

• Configure the AutoUpdate and Mirroring tasks. The order in which you configure these tasks is not important.

• Schedule the AutoUpdate and Mirroring tasks to run at convenient times. To ensure that AutoUpdate selects the current .DAT files, it is essential that the Mirroring task run first, and that it be completed before the AutoUpdating task begins.

32 McAfee VirusScan Anti-Virus software version 4.5.1

Page 33: VirusScan Release Guide Version 4.5download.nai.com/...english_us/virusscan/mcafee_versions/.../vsc45… · Release Guide iii Contents Preface . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Updating your .DAT files

Configuring the AutoUpdate taskThere are four parts to configuring the AutoUpdate task:

• “Opening the AutoUpdate utility.” See below for information.

• “Defining update sites.” For information, see page 35.

• “Choosing additional update options.” For information, see page 39.

• “Logging update activity.” For information, see page 40.

NOTE to ePOLICY ORCHESTRATOR USERS: When an update, upgrade, or mirror task is configured and deployed via ePolicy Orchestrator, its configuration replaces the older configuration for the same task that may already reside on the workstation. For example, if you configure AutoUpdate, AutoUpgrade, or Mirror to run on a schedule, and then configure and deploy a different update, upgrade or mirroring task to run immediately, (or with any other properties that differ from the previous task,) the newer configuration replaces the older configuration on the client machines. If you want to restore the original configuration, reconfigure the task and deploy it again.

Opening the AutoUpdate utilityYou can access the AutoUpdate property pages from either the VirusScan Console or ePolicy Orchestrator. While their appearances differ, they provide the same selections.

Using the VirusScan Console

1. From the Start menu, open the VirusScan Console.

2. Double-click AutoUpdate to open the Task Properties dialog box.

3. Click Configure to open the AutoUpdate property pages (Figure 3-1 on page 34).

• “Configuring a local path” on page 38

The order in which the sites are listed on the AutoUpdate sites property pages is the order in which AutoUpdate accesses them.

IMPORTANT: Typically, the update sites that appear in the list are replicas of the Network Associates FTP site. The replication is created using the mirroring function, which allows a server to download files from a source location specified in the Mirror utility. See Chapter 4, “Creating a mirror of the NAI update site,” for general information, and Step 1 on page 49 for specific details.

• By default, the currently logged-on user account is used to access the UNC site.

• If the UNC site is a NullSessionShare, any currently logged-on user can access the target. See Important notice about using NullSessionShares on page 38.

• If gaining access to the UNC site requires particular rights, be sure to use an account with appropriate rights. On Windows 95 and Windows 98 systems, the currently logged-on user must have “read” rights to the shared folder.

• To use a different user account, deselect Use Logged In Account, then enter the User Name and Password required for access to the UNC shared folder. All passwords appear as eight asterisks.

• If the specified user is not logged on at the time the update is scheduled, AutoUpdate attempts to use Local System account to perform the update. Unless the UNC share is a NullSessionShare, the update fails. See Important notice about using NullSessionShares, on page 38.

4. Click OK when you have finished making your selections.

Release Guide 37

Updating your .DAT files

Configuring a local path

1. Enter a name for the site that you are defining, and select Enable site.

2. Enter the path of the local folder (for example, C:\DATS\), or click Browse to locate the folder in which you have placed the update files.

3. Click OK when you have finished making your selections.

 IMPORTANT: ABOUT USING NULLSESSIONSHARES

To maintain network security, you must plan very carefully if you want to place the update files in a shared folder that users can access without login credentials. You must designate the shared folder as a NullSessionShare. It is beyond the scope of this Release Guide to provide instructions for creating a NullSessionShare on your network.

Because a NullSessionShare can result in a security vulnerability, McAfee strongly recommends that you take advantage of all of the following security features available for Windows NTFS systems including:

• Grant clients only “read” and “search” privileges to the shared folder.

• Grant the server that houses the shared folder “write” privileges to the shared folder.

• Establish a quota for the number of messages that the shared folder can accept.

• Use the NTFS auditing feature.

2. Select one or more of the following functions:

• Backup the existing .DAT files. Renames the .DAT files currently in use by appending the extension .SAV before installing new files.

• Update Engine if newer Engine exists. Replaces the scanning engine you are currently using with a more recent one, if one exists.

• Force-Update .DAT files. Select this checkbox:

– To downgrade the current .DAT files to an earlier version that you have preserved. You might want to take this action as a temporary step if the newer .DAT files are not behaving as expected.

– If the current .DAT files on a particular workstation have been corrupted or rendered ineffective because an essential file, such as CLEAN.DAT, has been deleted.

TIP: To force an update of the .DAT files without updating the engine, select Force-Update the .DAT files and scanning engine, and deselect Update scanning engine if newer scanning engine exists.

• Run a Program after the Update. Starts another program when the AutoUpdate task finishes running.

– Enter the path of the executable you want to run, or click Browse to locate it.

– If you do not want the program to run after an unsuccessful update, select Only run if Update completes successfully.

IMPORTANT: The program file that you specify must be executable by the currently logged-on user. If the currently logged-on user does not have access to the folder containing the program files, or if there is no user currently logged-on, the program will not run.

Logging update activityYou can set up a logging file to record the updating events.

1. Select the Log Activity tab to enable and configure the logging function (Figure 3-4).

2. Verify that Log to file is selected to enable the logging function.

• The name of the log file is UPDATE.TXT. Its default path is:

<drive>:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\

• If you prefer, you can enter a different name or path.

3. Specify the size of the log file.

• The maximum size for the log file is set to 1,024KB (1MB). Enter any value between 10KB and 32,767KB.

• If the data in the log exceeds the file size you set, the oldest 20% of the log text is deleted to make room for new information. If you place no size restriction on the log file, you run the risk of it consuming all available space on the drive where it is located.

4. Specify the scope of the logging.

• Select Enable Verbose logging to log every step in a procedure.

• Deselect this checkbox if you want to log only the starting and stopping of the task.

5. When you have finished setting Log Activity options, click OK.

44Creating a mirror of the NAI update site

OverviewThis chapter describes a new interface for creating a mirror image of the Network Associates FTP update site on your network. Ordinarily, setting up a mirror site is the responsibility of the network administrator. End-users may be responsible for configuring AutoUpdate, but are not usually in a position to configure the mirroring task.

In general, the configuration instructions are applicable whether you are viewing the interface in your Windows Server native environment, or within the ePolicy Orchestrator environment. However, in the ePolicy Orchestrator environment, ignore instructions that refer to the use of a Browse or Default button.

IMPORTANT: If you plan to use the mirroring function and you are installing VirusScan with the Setup wizard, you must perform a custom installation. To locate the Mirror Task on the Custom Setup page, expand the Console branch of the tree view, then expand the McUpdate branch. Click the Mirror Task icon and select This feature will be installed on local hard drive. For information on performing a custom installation, see page 25.

In relatively small networks where every computer has unlimited access to the Internet, each computer can retrieve the update files directly from the Network Associates FTP site. However, such an approach is impractical in situations where some computers do not have access to the Internet, and inefficient in situations where many computers are downloading files from a remote, external source, such as the Network Associates FTP site.

This release of VirusScan allows an alternative approach for larger networks, including those managed by ePolicy Orchestrator software. This approach involves creating one or more mirror sites on your network. Each mirror site replicates the Network Associates FTP site that contains the .DAT files. Computers on your network then download the files from a mirror site. This approach is practical because you can update any computer on your network, whether or not it has Internet access, and efficient because your workstations are communicating with a server that is probably closer than a Network Associates FTP server, thus economizing access and download time.

Creating a mirror of the NAI update site

The Mirror utility incorporates the functionality previously available in the AutoUpdate option, Retrieve update but save for later usage.

If you plan to use mirror sites on your network, you must:

• Configure the AutoUpdate and Mirroring tasks. The order in which you configure these tasks is not important.

• Schedule the AutoUpdate and Mirroring tasks to run at convenient times. To ensure that AutoUpdate selects the current .DAT files, it is essential that the Mirroring task run first, and that it be completed before the AutoUpdating task begins.

Configuring the Mirroring taskThere are four parts to configuring the Mirroring task:

• “Opening the Mirror utility.” See below for information.

• “Defining mirror sites.” For information, see page 46.

• “Defining the destination folder.” For information, see page 49.

• “Logging mirror activity.” For information, see page 50.

NOTE: If you are using McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator to configure the mirroring task, see the NOTE on page 33.

Defining mirror sitesYou can define a maximum of 16 uniquely named locations from which your designated mirror server can download the .DAT files and scanning engine.

1. Click Add. The Site Options property page opens (Figure 4-2).

2. Select a file retrieval method. For detailed information, see:

• “Configuring an FTP site,” starting on page 47.

• “Configuring a UNC path,” starting on page 48.

• “Configuring a local path” on page 48.

The order in which the sites are listed on the Mirror sites property pages is the order in which the Mirroring utility accesses them.

Creating a mirror of the NAI update site

Configuring an FTP site

1. Enter a name for the site that you are defining, and select Enable site.

2. Enter the name of the FTP server and the directory containing the file or files.

• The default selection is the Network Associates FTP download site.

• To use a different FTP site, such as one on your network, enter the complete URL for the site. For example, ftp.myserver/install.

• To restore the Network Associates FTP site as the source location, click Default.

3. Supply user credentials.

• If the FTP location accepts anonymous logins (like the NAI FTP site), select Use Anonymous FTP Login.

• If the FTP location requires login credentials, deselect Use Anonymous FTP Login, then enter the User Name and Password required for access to the server. All passwords appear as eight asterisks.

4. Select passive or active FTP.

• The default connection is passive FTP, where the client opens both the command session and the data session. As a result, a firewall is unlikely to interfere with the transmission, which can occur with active FTP.

• To use an active FTP connection, deselect this checkbox.

5. Supply proxy information.

• If your network requires a proxy server, select Use Proxy Server, then enter the name of the proxy server and the port it uses.

• If you are using proxy software, be certain that you have the most current version, including any service packs.

6. Click OK when you have finished making your selections.

Configuring a UNC path

1. Enter a name for the site that you are defining, and select Enable site.

2. Using UNC notation, (\\servername\path), enter the path of the site where the update files are located, or click Browse to locate a shared file on the network.

3. Supply user credentials.

• By default, the currently logged-on user account is used to access the UNC site.

• If the UNC site is a NullSessionShare, any currently logged-on user can access the target. See Important notice about using NullSessionShares on page 43.

• If the specified user is not logged on at the time the mirroring is scheduled, Mirror attempts to use Local System account to perform the update. Unless the UNC share is a NullSessionShare, the mirroring fails. See Important notice about using NullSessionShares, on page 43.

4. Click OK when you have finished making your selections.

Configuring a local path

1. Enter a name for the site that you are defining, and select Enable site.

2. Enter the path of the local folder (for example, C:\DATS\), or click Browse to locate the folder in which you have placed the update files.

3. Click OK when you have finished making your selections.

Creating a mirror of the NAI update site

Defining the destination folderSpecify the local path of the folder that will contain the update files:

1. Select the Destination tab (Figure 4-3)

The Destination tab lets you designate the path of a local folder where the Mirror utility desposits the .DAT files that it retrieves from a designated site (listed on the Source Sites page). Files are retrieved only if they are either:

• New files that do not yet exist in the destination folder.

• Newer than files with the same name already present in the destination folder.

2. Repeat the configuration procedure for each mirror server that you want to define.

IMPORTANT: If the destination is not on the local computer, it must be on a mapped network drive. Because mapped network drives are available only when a user is logged on to the system, the Mirror task cannot run successfully unless a user is logged on at the time the task is scheduled to run.
