Introduction Welcome to the School of Design and Art OUA unit VAR31 Art Visual Research 3.  In this unit, you are required to contextualise and expand upon the notion of Drawing through the knowledge that drawing contains many processes, applications and techniques that can include but also extend beyond works on paper. You will undertake two intensive projects: Science Nature and Artifice and Architectural Drawing. 

In each exercise you be required to engage and develop:

l An understanding of how drawing has been explored by artists throughout history and how it may be interpreted in conventional and non-conventional forms within contemporary art.

l An understanding of how to undertake appropriate research to formulate new ideas. l Knowledge of how to articulate your ideas through written form. l Techniques to assist in the progression of visual outcomes. l Exploration and development of digital media in your creative practice. l An awareness of cultural understanding through materials and imagery. l Confidence in critiquing and evaluating your work and the work of others.

You are encouraged to develop the necessary skills to become proactive and autonomous in your art projects/exercises. It is expected that you consult with your tutor on a regular basis to discuss your ideas and working methodology.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. These tell an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and attributes which employers say would be useful in a professional setting. You may still choose to visit the E-Reserve Collection to source research material. The Study Guide provides numerous links to ebooks, videos and artists, however, it is expected that you will source the majority of your own research material for this unit.

Pass requirements

There are  two submissions for assessment in this unit. You must submit both folio submissions and achieve a final grade of 50% or more to pass the unit.

Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission

(eg a mark equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time (eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners' meeting.

Exceptions to the Above

You need to attach supporting documentation to your application (see page 1 of the application form above for further information) and forward the completed forms to [email protected].

You will receive notification, via an Official Curtin Communication (OCC) and via an email to your student account, letting you know the outcome of your application. Please read the notification carefully and follow all required instructions.

 

If you do not complete your form in full or supply appropriate support documentation,  processing of the application may be delayed and/or your application denied.

PRESENTING AND SUBMITTING YOUR FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT

The format of your presentation should be well considered for the assessment of your work. It is expected that you learn to develop good documentation skills with digital photography to best present your work for online assessment. A submission which shows your working methodology and clearly presents your ideas and outcomes will help to present your work at its best. Use the Learning Resources to peruse the Guidelines and Examples of Presentations for VAR31. It is a requirement that you sign and attach the Assignment Coversheet > Declaration and submit with your work for each assessment. All project work and items for each assessment are submitted online via the unit ASSESSMENT DROP BOX. Please refer to information detailed below:

When submitting your work for assessment, make sure you include all of the information in one single file. The preferred file formats for your submission are either:  PowerPoint presentation (or similar) or Adobe pdf file. Note: work submitted as multiple files will be rejected, to be re-submitted within a specified time-frame as a single file. If re-submission does not meet the required date as requested assessment penalties may be applied.

Presentation and Documentation: To ensure you present your best images for assessment we suggest you experiment with different settings, especially as your intention should be to convey the best possible record of your work. The assessment of your work is compromised if the quality of images is poor: e.g. out of focus, badly lit, low resolution (150dpi recommended), or have been digitally manipulated. It is appropriate to crop images to reduce any background interference. Use a neutral background like a white wall or black/white paper to place your work on before photographing.  Refer to the Learning Resources section for further advice on this.

Visual Diary: You can scan your visual diary or use a digital camera to document the appropriate pages.

Program calendar STUDY LOAD Time allocation for this unit is 10 hours per week minimum. We recommend that a maximum of one hour per week of this time is allocated to the Discussion Board. UNIT STRUCTURE The duration of this unit is thirteen weeks. It is recommended that you follow the timetable as planned below, although your own work patterns and time constraints may determine a different study pattern.

Commence exercise by researching the project topic: Science, Nature and Artifice.

Exercise 1, work in progress – test your ideas through an investigative approach to research and exploration – undertake artist and other research; brainstorm ideas, visually plan out ideas, test and experiment with different materials and processes and so forth.

 

Refine  work in progress into a resolved series of drawings or negotiated drawing outcomes.

#1 In the discussion room post a 100-200 word critique describing how Rachel Whiteread has approached drawing and how you think it informs her practice.

 

3 12 Sept Tutor will schedule a collaborate session to discuss work in progress

 

4 19 Sept #2 In the discussion room post a 100-200 word critique describing how any of the artists listed in the DR activity might communicate an idea of science, nature and artifice.
