Well Being:Not what the doctor recommended!!!
Colombians in the 90s
Highest level of life satisfaction in the world
Highest rate of murders per capita in the world
Highest number of kidnappings in the world
Highest levels of random violence
Colombia
Moldova
Personal well-being
Psychological:
Sense of control
CompetenceMeaning
My son Poor loser
Bad food affects us today, not just in the long term (high saturated fat hangover)
We can control expression of genes (prostate cancer suppressed by eating broccoli)
Omega 3 Sugars and carbohydrates tell our brains to
eat more Nuts, avocados, and olive oil tell our brains to
stop eating because we are satisfied Eat red, green and blue
20 minutes exercise per day Only 27% do 30 minutes of exercise 5 times
per week Exercise much better than drugs to fight
fatigue Sleep: your reset button Sleep is good for learning and problems
solving 7 to 8 hours of sleep is optimal (more or less
is unhealthy)
Well being tied to GDP Richer countries report higher levels of
well-being Money essential for basic needs However, money is not everything! Spending money on yourself is not as
good as spending money on others We spend the most when are sad If you spend, buy experiences, not things
Which would you choose? Making $50k when the people around you
make 25k, or Make $ 100k when people around you
make $ 200k Half the people chose the first option Relative deprivation: how green is my
neighbors lawn?
If your occupational well-being and interpersonal well-being are strong, you are less likely to get caught in the comparison game.
Setting up automatic defaults: savings, etc.
Financial security more important to well-being than amount of dollars in the bank
Effects of social support
Less likely to have heart attacks More likely to resist common cold virus Lower mortality Less degree of stress More positive outlook on life Resilience
My Social Support
Organizational Well-Being: A three legged stool
Effective
Supportive
Reflective
Occupational well-being is about feeling engaged at work.
Engagement derives from: Efficient structures Clear roles Monitoring mechanisms Planning and accountability Growth opportunities Fulfillment of needs Identity and meaning
Unemployment leads to disease and depression Disengagement also leads to disease and depression As engagement increases, cholesterol and
triglycerides go down Your boss can be the best doctor or the worst killer Worst manager is the one who does not pay attention If your manager focuses on your strengths, the
chances of your being disengaged is just 1% Men who lived to 95 did not retire until they were 80
years old

“The data indicate that workplaces with engaged employees, on average, do a better job of keeping employees, satisfying customers, and being financially productive and profitable. Workplace well-being and performance are not independent. Rather, they are complimentary and dependent components of a financially and psychologically healthy workplace” (Harter, Schmidt & Keyes, 2003, p. 221)

Community Change
Strengths
Prevention
“No mass disorder, afflicting humankind, has ever been eliminated, or brought under control, by treating the affected individual”
Prevention saves money
For every $1 invested in prevention, we get up to $17 in return, but we invest only 3% of our budget on prevention.
Empowerment
Empowerment can be a tool for social change and personal healing at the same time
Community Change
If Venice “is slowly being submerged, individual citizens cannot afford to ignore their collective fate, because, in the end, they all drown together if nothing is done.” (Badcock, 1982)
True or False43
The best way to eliminate disease is through effective treatment
True or False44
Colombians are happier than Moldovans
True or False45
If doctors smoked CAMELS more than any other brand, Medicare fraud in Miami would be as bad as traffic and government corruption
