2004 ANNUAL REPORT

CANADIAN FOUNDATIONFOR DIETETIC RESEARCH

LA FONDATION CANADIENNEDE LA RECHERCHE EN DIÉTÉTIQUE

VISION CFDR is the pre-eminent funder of applied nutrition and dietetic research in Canada.

MISSION CFDR contributes to the health of Canadians by generating funds for applied nutrition and dietetic research.

CFDR. As a step in this direction, policy changes wereapproved in 2004 to reduce barriers to dietitians’ participationin research, such as extending the granting period to allowmore time to complete projects and providing funding for atemporary replacement to allow for the Principal Investigatorto devote regular work time to research.

FAR-REACHING IMPACT OF MULTI-CENTRESTUDYThe first multi-centre study funded by CFDR was completedthis year and has already provided substantial returns for aninvestment of $50,000. Coordinated by Ryna Levy-Milne,PhD, RDN, of UBC, the study involved 10 university dietitian-researchers (the mentors) and 14 practicing dietitians (thetrainees) from 7 sites across Canada. The study exploredCanadian dietitians’ attitudes and knowledge about obesityand weight management. “By including a research-trainingcomponent, this project demystified the research process,”indicates Judy Sheeshka, Chair of CFDR’s Scientific ReviewCommittee. “The dietitian trainees gained confidence and dis-covered that research can actually be fun! As a result, they aremuch more likely to participate in future practice-basedresearch.”

UPGRADING CFDR’S UNIQUE RESEARCH DATABASECFDR undertook major enhancementsof its unique database, a consolidated source of food, nutri-tion and dietetic practice research activities that was initiatedin 1998. Along with a more user-friendly appeal, the

Canadian Inventory of Nutrition and Dietetic AssociatedResearch (CINDAR) now boasts a more powerful searchengine and state-of-the-art content management systemthat will support efficient access to a growing body ofdietetic practice research funded by CFDR and other agen-cies. The new upgrade will enhance networking and evi-dence-based decision making on policy, programs, resources and messages.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO REACH GROCERS Through a strategic partnership, CFDR reached 60,000 grocersacross the country via a promotional insert in the June issue ofCanadian Grocer magazine. The insert showcased four exam-ples of successful CFDR-funded research projects that demon-strate opportunities for grocery stores to be involved in deliver-ing important nutrition messages to Canadians.

With a new strategic plan in place as a solid roadmap toguide its future, the Foundation is well positioned to fulfill itsmandate…building on past successes, capitalizing on strategicopportunities and addressing new challenges along the way.

CORPORATE FUNDRAISINGThe annual Corporate Golf Challenge has evolved into the sin-gle most successful fundraising event for the Foundation.“Our goal of providing a one-of-a-kind golfing and networkingopportunity that raises significant funds for the Foundationwas achieved again this year,” says Mike Hill, Board memberand Fundraising Committee Chair.

CFDR was pleased to welcome The CentrumFoundation and Wyeth Consumer Health Care Inc. asour newest corporate supporter, and to acknowledgeThe McCain Foundation and McCain Foods (Canada)for increasing its support of CFDR from Patron toBenefactor level.

INDIVIDUAL DC MEMBER SUPPORTIndividual dietitians and CFDR Board members also con-tributed generously to the Foundation this past year, throughdonations of $24,000 from 401 members, and a number ofcreative regional events. A silent auction held in AtlanticCanada, golf tournaments organized by the DC Business andIndustry Network and by dietitians in Calgary and inWinnipeg, and donations received in lieu of registration feesfor research day in Edmonton, all raised funds and CFDR’sprofile.

A Tribute Gift Program was initiated as an innovative wayto acknowledge milestones in the lives and careers of friendsand colleagues. “Being honoured on my 20th anniversary asCEO of Dietitians of Canada through the launch of this tributeprogram was very special for me,” indicates Marsha Sharp,CFDR Secretary-Treasurer.

RESEARCH AND GRANTINGFour dietitians and their investigative teams were awardedresearch grants totaling $60,000 in the annual grant competi-tion. As Board member Bridget Davidson explains, “Theprojects funded in 2004 will enable dietitians across the coun-try to undertake research that has the potential to enhancethe health of Canadians and to influence both public policyand industry practices.”

Indicates Laurie Curry, CFDR Board member and DCBoard Chair, “Together the DC and CFDR Boards are commit-ted to encouraging dietitians to integrate research into theireveryday practice.”

Increasing the number of grant applications is a priority for

A NEW ROADMAP A key outcome of 2004 is a new three-year strategic plan forthe Foundation. “In developing this roadmap we drew onthe wisdom of Board members and sought advice from dieti-tians and corporate supporters across Canada,” explains BarbAnderson, President-Elect and Chair of the strategic plan-ning working group. “Key to the long-term success of CFDR isadoption of a newly focused vision and mission that reflectcurrent and future realities, and values to guide all activities.”

The plan focuses the Foundation on two strategic directions:fundraising and granting. Board member StephanieMinna states that “CFDR’s new strategic plan instills confi-dence that corporations’ charitable dollars are being used forthe right priorities.” Adds Board member Tim Hedges, “WithCFDR’s adoption of a donor-centred fundraising model as acornerstone of the new plan, emphasis will be placed on tai-loring donor benefits, recognition and communications to theinterests and needs of our supporters.”

FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT RESEARCHThanks to the leadership of our Fundraising Committee, CFDRenjoyed another year of successful fundraising outcomes, allowing us to meet our goals for research grants and forgrowth. And thanks to the Finance and Audit Committee, theCFDR Board has a sound model for use in planning and mon-itoring financial goals. Our short term priority is growing thebalance of funds to $2 million, to allow additional funds forresearch grants without eroding the principal investments thatsustain the Foundation over the long term.
