Berkel, Head – Regional Office, India, UNIDO.

Awards

Our Odisha Units received the following awards;

1. Power Plant (Odisha) – “Energy Efficient Unit” award under the category of Power Sector –

Captive Power Plant, from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), at the “20th National Award

for Excellence in Energy Management, 2019” function, organized at Hyderabad from 16th – 18th

September. Mr.N.S.K. Rao, Senior Manager (Electrical) and Mr. Biswajit Padhi, Deputy Manager

(Operation) of the Unit received the award.

2. Ferro Alloy Plant (Odisha) - “Energy Efficient Unit” award under the category of Metal Sector,

from CII at the “20th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, 2019” function,

organized at Hyderabad from 16th – 18th September. Mr.Nilan Mohanty, Asst. General Manager

(Engineering) and Mr.M. Bhimeswara Rao, Deputy Manager (C&I) of the Unit received the award.

3. Odisha Works – “Energy Efficient Plant” for achieving Four Star Rating () under the

category “Large Scale Companies”, from CII (Eastern Region), at the “12th Energy Conservation

(ENCON), 2019” awards function, organized at Kolkata, on 24th August.

The awards comprised a shield and a certificate.

Mr. V.P. Gautham, IAS, Project Officer, ITDA

Bhadrachalam, visited the Nava Bharat

Vocational Institute (NBVI) and Women

Empowerment Centre (WEC), in July. Mr.

V.P. Gautham, interacted with the trainees

of various courses. He was impressed with

the quality of the training provided to the

candidates and appreciated the efforts put in

by the Company in improving the

employability skills of the local youth &

women and also helping them in getting

placement and work orders for their

livelihood.

Division of M/s TATA Steel Limited, Kolkata,

along with his team, comprising

Mr.Debabrata Garain and Mr. Chilin Biswas

visited FAP (T), in July, to understand our

Manganese Alloys processing techniques.

Mr.C.V. Durga Prasad, Director (Business

Development) of the Company accompanied

the TATA team to Paloncha Works.

As part of their visit, the team also visited

NBVI, WEC and Nava Bharat Eye Centre. They

appreciated the services rendered by the

Company to the local poor through its various

initiatives.

A team of experts from M/s Tenova Pyromet,

South Africa, a leading company involved in

design & supply of, high-capacity electric

submerged-arc smelting furnaces & complete

smelting plants, for production of

ferroalloys, base metals, slag cleaning and

alloy refining, visited Odisha Works on 18th

September. The metallurgists & engineers of

FAP (T) and FAP (O) interacted with the

Tenova Pyromet team to ascertain the

opportunities for upgrading the Control

System of Furnace and improving its

efficiency.

A two-day training programme on “Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)” for 28 Internal Auditors of Paloncha Works, was conducted by Mr.Elavarasan, Bharat Pearl Associates, Chennai, to update them with recent changes and develop the newly selected Internal Auditors, for conducting IMS Audits, on 20th & 21st September. The Directorate of Factories & Boilers, Government of Odisha, organized one-day Safety Convergence Meet – 2019 with the theme “Safety in Steel and Power Sector for Vision Zero” at GMR Township, Dhenkanal District, on 25th September. Employees of Odisha Unit along with Officials from various industries in Dhenkanal & Angul Districts participated in the workshop. A brainstorming session, “CHINTAN@DOFB”,

was organised by Directorate of Factories &

Boilers, Odisha, at Bhubaneswar, on 30th

September, to achieve zero fatality and

reduce accidents at work place. As part of

this, a training-cum-interaction session was

also organised for Operation Heads, Safety

Officers & Line Managers of various Ferro

Alloy & Ferro Manganese Plants in Odisha.

Alloys Operations” and shared the safety

practices followed in FAP (O).

Celebrations

The 73rd Independence Day was celebrated at

all the Units of the Company with fervour and

gaiety. The National Flag was hoisted by the

Unit Heads on this occasion at their

respective Units and as part of the

celebrations many cultural programmes were

organized.

Under the “Free Tutorials” initiative of the Paloncha Unit, 1047 students of 22 Govt. Schools situated around the factory were covered during the academic year 2018-19. Out of the 1047 students who attended the “Free Tutorials”, 115 students got A+ grade and 58 students got A grade, while out of the 1279 students who did not attend the “Free Tutorials”, none got A+ grade and only 39 students got A grade. The participants of 17th batch of Welder Course, 13th batch of Fitter Course and 7th batch of Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Technician Course, completed their training successfully. A certificate awarding ceremony was organized for the participants of these courses at Nava Bharat Women Empowerment Centre (WEC), Paloncha, in August. Mr. P. Jagath Kumar Reddy, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, Bhadradri Kothagudem DIstrict, the Chief Guest on the occasion, gave away the certificates to the participants. He was very appreciative of the efforts put in by the Company for improving the employability of the local un-employed youth. A three-month training programme on “Basic Computer Fundamentals & Personality Development” has been launched at the Nava Bharat Skill Development Centre (NBSDC), Odisha. The training for the first batch of 28 local youth from neighbouring villages commenced, on 22nd July. This is the first training programme taken up by NBSDC, since its establishment on 27th June this year.

Odisha Works distributed fruit bearing seedlings developed at the Nursery, to the Employees and Contract Workers, on 13th September. The seedlings were distributed free of cost, to create awareness on importance of protection of environment. The Sugar Division constructed a Stage at Hussainpuram Village, Samalkot. The constructed Stage was handed over, through a formal letter, by Mr.D.V.L.N. Raju, General Manager (Plant), to Mr.Gopala Krishna, Headmaster of MPPP School, on 27th June. An “Eye Camp’ was organized for the benefit

of employees, in association with Srikiran Eye

Hospital (a division of Sankurathri

Foundation), Kakinada, at Sugar Division, on

2nd August. As part of the eye camp, the

employees underwent Blood Pressure &

Vision tests. Medical consultation by the

Ophthalmologist was also made available

during this camp.

Nava Bharat Public School (NBPS) students upheld the spirit of charity by donating clothes, utensils, stationery and provisions to three old age homes in Kothagudem and Paloncha. A group of NBPS students escorted by their teachers visited Yuvasena Children Home in Paloncha, to donate the items to the orphan children. Students of Nava Bharat Schools felicitated their gurus in a befitting manner during Teachers’ Day celebrations, on 5th September. On this occasion, Mrs. Manju Chourasia, Academic In-charge of Pre-Primary wing was bestowed with the Nation Builder Award by Rotary Club of Kothagudem.

The students of NBPS participated in Chess, Football and Athletic events at the Cluster and Zonal level tournaments conducted by CBSE. Ms. M.Kundana Reddy won gold medal in 100 metres sprint and Ms. P.Lasya Priya won silver medal in 1500 metres event, at the cluster level. Both qualified for National Level Athletic Meet. The School Girls’ team in 4x100 metres & 4x400 metres relay won silver & bronze medals respectively at the Cluster Level Athletic Meet. Further, the School Chess players bagged prizes in district tournament and finished

fifth in Zonal level.

We miss……

Mr. B. Pradeep Kumar, General Manager (Commercial), Odisha works, expired on 07.07.2019. He Served the Company for close to 30 years. During his service, he distinguished himself as an upright person and always kept Company’s interest first. He constantly worked to get the best material and contributed enormously in reducing costs. His untimely death has caused irreparable loss to the Company. May his soul rest in peace! The Management conveys condolences to the members of the bereaved

family.
