Dear Members of the Medical Staff:

These are exciting times for Baton Rouge General. 2012 was a very successful year – the momentum our team gained from achievements in quality, technology and patient satisfaction, expansion of services, fiscal performance, and importantly, the cultivation of relationships with

our medical staff, has paved a path for unprecedented growth and development in 2013.

As many of you are aware, our hospital underwent a full accreditation survey by the Joint Commission at the beginning of January. In my twelve years here at Baton Rouge General, this one topped the charts! Our Lean Six Sigma performance improvement work is undoubtedly paying off… the survey team applauded us at every level of the organization, and time and again, for our exceptional quality care processes and staff engagement, noting several of our successes as “best practices.” Without you, this survey result would not have been possible, and we thank you for your efforts.

It gives me great pride to also share that, for the first time in Baton Rouge General’s recent history, our Board of Trustees will be physician-led. Dr. Evelyn Hayes has officially taken up her post as Chair of General Health System’s Board of Trustees, effective January 1. Serving on the Board for 11 years now, Dr. Hayes’s new leadership position will undoubtedly provide a strengthened “voice of customer,” as it relates to our journey in quality improvement, and in turn, our mission of becoming the hospital of choice for physicians and patients alike. We are truly fortunate that she is dedicating her time and energy in this capacity (while she continues conducting her Gyn clinical practice and

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training!), and I look forward to working with her, side by side, for the coming years.

Finally, I’d like to dedicate this publication to bringing you up to speed on our recent accolades and expansion of the General’s heart and vascular footprint. Recently recognized by the Joint Commission as Baton Rouge’s only “Top Perfomer” for Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Surgery and Pneumonia and named Womack Heart Center in 2007 as part of the Bluebonnet campus expansion, our team has reinvigorated the program with leading edge treatments, technology, services, and a new heart and vascular tower incorporating comprehensive cardiac and vascular services and medical experts, all under one roof. And as a major sponsor of American Heart Association’s City Goes Red 2012-2013 campaign, Baton Rouge General is making a robust effort to engage our community in awareness, education and activities that will make a difference in their heart and vascular health... and we welcome you, our valued members of the Medical Staff, to join us in “Going Red” during the month of February.

We hope you are as excited as we are about these developments, all centered on a firm commitment to meet our community’s needs through innovation, collaboration and excellence at all levels. We look forward to continuing the journey with you, together, as we strive to provide the highest level of heart and vascular care for patients across South Louisiana.

Here’s to a Community of Wellness in 2013!

Sincerely,

Bill Holman, President and CEOAmerican Heart Association, Board Chairman

Shaping Heart & Vascular Clinical Leadership As Baton Rouge General’s 2013 Med Exec committee “changing of the guards” approaches, so too, come changes with the clinical management of our cardiac service line. We recognize and are grateful to Dr. Steven Kelley for his service as Service Chief of Cardiology (2008-2012)––his time, talent, leadership and expertise have been instrumental in taking our program to the next level. In turn, we welcome Dr. Venkat Surakanti to the role of Service Chief of Cardiology and look forward to his leadership and expertise as we work to evolve Womack Heart Center at Baton Rouge General. We also welcome Dr. William Boedefeld as the new Service Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and Dr. Paul Perkowski is continuing as Service Chief of Vascular Surgery.

Furthermore, the General’s vision for shaping these services begins with patient-centric collaboration among physicians, clinical staff and Administrative leadership with quality and safety as the key areas of focus. To support these enhancements, Baton Rouge General will initiate a multidisciplinary cardiac and vascular advisory board of experts and specialists with support from the service chiefs and medical directors within the cardiology, vascular surgery, and cardio-thoracic surgery service lines. In addition, as part of a co-management agreement with BRCC, a Cardiovascular Operations Committee will be engaged to manage Cardiology Service initiatives, develop protocols and policies and procedures, and implement of best practices. Together, we look forward to shaping a cohesive program that is mission-driven, collaborative, and dedicated to making a difference in the way we care for patients who are at risk for, or are suffering from, the nation’s leading causes of death and disability – cardiovascular disease and stroke.

World Renowned Interventional Cardiologist Visits Baton Rouge General’s State-of-the-Art Heart and Vascular Facilities

“ Baton Rouge General’s comprehensive cardiac and vascular services and facilities are truly impressive. They are, by far, the best I’ve seen”

- John Simpson, MD

World renowned interventional cardiologist and inventor Dr. John Simpson visited Baton Rouge General to tour the hospital’s state-of-the-art heart and vascular facilities. Pioneer of the over-the-wire balloon angioplasty catheter, a percutaneous closure device and the SilverHawk Plaque Excision System, Dr. Simpson observed the hospital’s newly expanded surgical suites, equipped with minimally invasive hybrid operating capabilities.

During his visit, Dr. Simpson met with the hospital’s heart and vascular specialists to learn about recent advancements in Baton Rouge General’s program. Proctoring a series of specialized procedures, Dr. Simpson was also on hand to observe local vascular surgeon, Dr. Glen Schwartzberg, performing the region’s first endovascular hybrid room procedure using the Ocelot catheter, a new device for minimally-invasive procedures to help treat completely blocked arteries invented by Dr. Simpson.

Compared to traditional surgery space, the General’s hybrid room uniquely allows for the simultaneous IT integration of sophisticated diagnostic technologies, precise imaging capabilities and multiple surgical therapies – with the goal of maximizing treatment options for cardiac and vascular procedures.

Baton Rouge General’s multispecialty physician-led efforts to develop these facilities incorporated Lean Six Sigma principles and standards for the design and flow of clinical care and patient support services. Unlike a “retrofit,” the General’s state-of-the-art hybrid suite allows seamless transitions from interventional to open procedures, all within spacious accommodations oft-referred to as “second to none” in this area.

Remarking on his experience, Simpson said, “Baton Rouge General’s comprehensive cardiac and vascular services and facilities are truly impressive. They are, by far, the best I’ve seen – beautifully designed surgical space and innovative technology combined with top-notch physician expertise to offer patients the most advanced, comprehensive heart and vascular care in the area.”

With the positive buzz about our new surgical environment and scheduling availability, the General has also begun planning an expansion of patient care areas at Bluebonnet.

t CHF Transition RN Coach Baton Rouge General’s new transition coach, Susan Hudsbeth, RN, is helping patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) safely and successfully transition home from the hospital. As part of the General’s continuous efforts to enhance quality and improve HCAPHS scores, our new transition coach is playing an important role in helping to reduce avoidable 30-day readmissions for CHF patients.

Developing ServicesIn recent years, our physician leaders have determined the need for integrating various disciplines into a “best practice” cardiac and vascular program. Developing lipid services with Dr. Bob St. Amant’s expertise; metabolic services with Dr. Justin Matrisciano’s guidance; limb preservation protocols with Drs. Albert Sam and Joe Griffin’s vision; and other programs such as Stroke, Smoking Cessation and BRG Fit!, our wellness pilot, have been critical steps in the process of expanding into a cohesive program at Baton Rouge General. We will continue evolving these and other services to support this vision, and we remain open to your ideas and feedback.
