School Organization
GHS operates on a hybrid 4x4 credit system, with four marking periods
per semester. High school credit for successful completion of Foreign
Language, Algebra I and Geometry can be earned in middle school.

Gloucester County is located on the Mid-dle Peninsula of Virginia, with a popula-tion of approximately 37,000 people. The Fall 2013 school system enrollment was 5,632, with 17% being minority, 10% identified as having special needs, 10% identified for gifted services, and 31% identified as economically disadvantaged (all %s are approximate).
Honors Courses Academic honors level courses are of-fered to students at all grade levels who wish to have a more rigorous and chal-lenging course of study. Honors courses are weighted on the grading scale. Dual Enrollment Courses Dual enrollment courses are taken through Rappahannock Community Col-lege and are typically taught at GHS. Aca-demic dual enrollment courses are weighted on the grading scale; students receive college credit for these courses at most VA state-supported colleges/universities as well as high school credit. Certain Career and Technical Education courses are also Dual Enrollment courses.

GHS is a member of the Peninsula District and Conference 10.
Advanced Placement Courses Certified by the College Board (the same organization responsible for the SAT), AP courses are college-level courses that cul-minate in an end of course AP exam. AP courses are weighted on the grading scale. These AP courses are taught at GHS: English 11/Language, English 12/Literature, United States Government, United States History, Calculus A/B, Calcu-lus B/C, Statistics, Spanish V, Chemistry II, Psychology, Biology II, Art Portfolio and Physics. GHS also participates in the Virtu-al Virginia AP Program with a larger varie-ty of options available to students.
