CHAIRMAN’S REPORTIn 2016 the South Adelaide Football Club has performed with credit. Competitiveness has been enhanced across all grades. This produced a second place finish in the Stanley H Lewis Trophy, which is the best result for South Adelaide in many years. There was greater engagement by local players from our zones and the leakage of players from the senior squad was minimal. Members will have detected palpable commitment to the Club and pride shown in wearing the Blue & White jumper for the 140th Year. The playing group has embraced the trademarks that they have developed with the assistance of Leading Teams. The league team won ten out of ten home matches including three matches against AFL State League teams Adelaide (twice) and Port Adelaide (once). This is the first time that has been achieved at Hickinbotham Oval.

There were key resignations which bookended the season. The CEO resigned in March and the board called on Neill Sharpe to step up into that role as well as continuing as Football Manager. Neill has done a remarkable job in both football and administration in 2016 for which the board and all members of the Club are truly indebted to him. Sadly, the highly productive Gotch era has closed without securing the premiership which continues to elude this Club. I repeat my thanks to Brad Gotch for three years of loyal and effective service to South Adelaide Football Club and I wish Brad and Michelle every success and happiness for the future. He has left a wonderful legacy for his great friend and incoming coach Garry Hocking. And he has left one of his sons Xavier, a 100 game Panther to contribute some Gotch DNA into the Club’s next premiership.

Off field, like many of our competitor Clubs, the trading performance by South Adelaide has been challenging. Financial constraints are now a harsh reality in SANFL. Traditional revenue streams associated with Club membership and game day attendance have declined markedly. The Licensed Venue, Jimmy Deane’s, has experienced its most difficult trading year since its refurbishment in 2008. This work was undertaken with a bank loan of $3.5M with the expectation of annual principal reductions. The Club’s anticipated full year performance will be a loss for the third year in a row. Thankfully, along with the seven other constituent clubs, South Adelaide will receive assistance from the SANFL’s Land Divestment Grants distributed over coming years from the sale of land at Football Park. These funds will be used to retire debt. Budget forecasts for 2017 have necessarily been struck on the basis of significant cuts in expenditure. This will impact on the Football Department.

Over the past five years the performance of South Adelaide’s junior grades has improved significantly. In 2015, and again this year, the U16s have performed extremely well and the U18s have also become competitive. The recasting of SANFL zone boundaries in 2014 handed back to the Club the traditionally strong recruiting grounds of Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley and Sheidow Park. If properly

developed, this should see our senior squads becoming more evenly balanced between local players and recruits. The need to continue to improve and grow our playing talent from within is clear, and is an established goal for the Club. This improved position in junior football has created a genuine challenge given our overall financial position.

In order for the club to be able to continue to improve and grow our playing talent from within our local recruiting zones, South Adelaide has established, via the Australian Sports Foundation, a tax deductible donation opportunity for members and supporters to directly fund the club’s junior football programs. Our target is to raise $200,000 which will ensure that our junior programs will be fully funded over the next two years, during which time the Club will concentrate on working to reduce legacy debt and seeing that finances overall are re-balanced. It would be a tragedy for the Club to have to cut expenditure in the football development area which can underpin our future success. Early response from members and supporters has been gratifying and the first distribution of over $20,000 being paid by the Foundation early.

I wish to acknowledge the contribution made to the board of this Club by Darren Kappler and Grant Miles whose terms expire at this AGM as well as the late Dave Flanagan who died recently and who stepped down at last year’s AGM. All three had served on the Board for nine years. As a former Captain and inducted as a South Adelaide Legend, David Kappler held office as football director. Grant has served as Finance Director and has witnessed the highs and lows of the Club’s trading since the Jimmy Deane’s refurbishment was undertaken by a previous administration. Dave was a former Chairman of the Club and SANFL delegate. Dave was a passionate man who truly loved this Club.

A Club cannot exist for 140 years without the dedicated support of its members. I urge all members to do what you can at this time of challenge and opportunity for South Adelaide Football Club. I look forward to working with the Board and other volunteers in 2017 in order to support Garry Hocking and Adam Blakely with the senior squad, Tony Bamford and Warren Ploenges with junior development as well as Neill in administration and Peter at Jimmy Deane’s along with the Club’s wonderful staff. Have a safe and happy Christmas. See you at the football next year.

CEO’SREPORTFootball is a fickle business as we all know. Winning is critical and South Adelaide Football Club have found that difficult for large periods of its 140 year existence.

In 2016 there was a lot of winning, 14 in fact. Ten wins at Hickinbotham Oval – something that had never happened before. Wins also at Norwood and Central, extremely rare in recent times.

In a very even team that featured 31 players on the year there were some stand out individual performances. Brett Eddy won his first Ken Farmer Medal as the SANFL’s leading goalkicker. Brede Seccull emerged as one of the competition’s leading midfielders tieing for his first Knuckey Cup with Joel Cross, who grabbed his third in another consistently brilliant year. We also saw the emergence of Nic Schwarz, Tyson Brown, Emmanuel Irra, Matt Rankine, Sam Overall, Ben Haren, Codey Ellison and Rigby Barnes.

The Reserves too lifted their rating to contest in the finals for the first time in many years.

On the back of all those positives the Finals didn’t go to plan. Both League and Reserves lost the first week to what ironically would prove to be the Premiers in both grades (Sturt and North Adelaide respectively).

Since the season’s end there has been a good deal of change. Senior Coach Brad Gotch accepted an opportunity to return to his family in Melbourne and take up a coaching role with Collingwood. It is a testimony to the regard Brad is held in that he can claim to be the only South Adelaide League Coach to get a farewell. History says plenty have been farewelled but not in such pleasant circumstances. In three years Brad made a significantly positive impact on the South Adelaide Football Club and we wish him all the best in his next challenge.

League Assistant Coaches Jarrad Wright, Matt Golding and Michael Handby also bid farewell. They have served the Club with distinction and we wish them all the best.

Call it luck but the Club was very fortunate that at the time of Brad’s departure there were a number of worthy candidates in the market. The best of these was Garry Hocking. Garry has just about done every coaching role at Port Adelaide in the past seven years. He had proved a difficult adversary as Port Magpies Coach and will continue to build on the platform Brad had built.

Inevitably there has also been player movement, some voluntary and some forced. Great opportunities have been presented for Brett Eddy and Emannuel Irra at Port Adelaide and Sam Draper at Essendon. The AFL opportunities for Brett and E-Man are great reward for their hard work and also for the effort Brad Gotch put in to improving their games. Sam Draper’s ascension from soccer player to AFL list in 10 months is a pat on the back for Talent Manager Tony Bamford and that of the Reynella Football Club. Sam’s first night of training was the team photo and from there he kept improving with every training session and game. We will

watch all those boys journey with interest.

It’s great that our club and this game can give an opportunity to play at the highest standard to a 27 year-old, a Ugandan refugee, a 202cm soccer player who spent a large part of his youth in the UK and a 168cm ball magnet can become an AFL Premiership player at 20 years of age. We all couldn’t help but enjoy Caleb Daniel’s Premiership triumph.

Jake Veide’s late season ending injury ranks as a genuine disappointment. It was great that Jake got to the 100 game milestone in a career littered with some serious injuries. There was some real pride in him getting his name on the No. 62 locker and also in him kicking the fairytale final goal in that game. That his team mates came from everywhere to congratulate him speaks to the regards he is held. He will be missed this year as he takes the season off to rehabilitate and travel the world but we look forward to him returning in 2018.

There were other noteworthy milestones as Club stalwart Tarak Redigolo also clinched his long-awaited 100th game for the Panthers, Nathan Daniel played his 100th game and Brad Crabb notched up his 150th to also become a South Adelaide Life Member.

Tony Bamford continues to build our junior program and get the best out of our talented youth. The U18s had their best season since the inception of the U18 competition. Clay Sampson replaced Julian Farkas as U16 Coach and won every game bar the last minor round game by 10 goals. However, their last round loss relegated them to second and on a wet night at Football Park eventual premier Glenelg adapted best to the conditions to knock the Panthers out of the finals. Positively for the Club there is an even and deep spread of talent in this age group. We will all watch their development with interest.

The strength of our zone and relationships with Leagues and Clubs is an important part of our future. I thank the GSFL, SFL and KIFL for their ongoing support of our underage football programs.

Thank you again to all our Football Department staff. The majority have racked up a number of years of unwavering service. I cannot name you all in these few pages, but the Club is truly grateful. I will however, mention two in particular in Reserves Coach Adam Blakely and High Performance Manager Tom Debenedictis. These guys are selfless in their commitment and we get every inch we can out of them and then squeeze a little more. Football Clubs exploit people like Adam and Tom and we are fortunate to have a number that are prepared to put themselves through it. A special mention also to the younger members of our training staff – Scott, Chloe, Amber, Charity. It is appreciated that you find the time to be involved in our football club. 3

The most concerning aspect of the year is the financial challenges that currently beset the South Adelaide Football Club and the majority of SANFL clubs. These have been well-documented during the course of this year and the Club has had to dramatically realign its budgets moving forward. The South Adelaide Board and administration have put in significant work in the last six months to put together a framework designed at greatly improving our financial position. As I have previously stated if we do not it could be fatal for South Adelaide.

There has been a number of staffing changes in the office with some staff members moving during the year. However, those that have toughed it out or joined us have been outstanding. Matt Sampson (Marketing), Shannen Hiern (Reception), Mae Kudzius (Licensed Club utility and now finance), Adam May (SANFL Finance), Dani Smith (Chef) and Peter Apostolopolous (Licensed Club) have kept looking at ways to keep improving the Football and Licensed Club. I thank you all.

Thank you also to all our sponsors and in particular Major Sponsors in ResourceCo, Grand Nissan and Flinders University. Our partnerships with all our sponsors are critical to our well-being and we look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial relationships in the future.

To the SANFL Commission and Executive team our working relationship during 2016 has had its challenges but the appreciation of your support of the South Adelaide Football Club has been made abundantly clear.

Finally thank you to those South Adelaide members that turn up every week home or away. For some it has been a life of torment and I know you’d like to have it another way but you just love the grand old blue & white. See you in 2017 I know you will be there.

SENIOR COACH REPORT The finish to the season was not quite the result we were expecting and all hoping for, but that’s footy. If you cannot deliver on your A grade game in the finals they become very hard to win, as we all now realise.

Our finish to the season was super positive, winning six of our last seven, including some stellar wins against fellow finalists Centrals, Sturt and Adelaide. You would have thought that was very good preparation going into the finals. However the loss of Jake Veide in Round 19 with a season ending knee injury, Ben Haren to a shoulder early in Round 22 and then Tyson Brown in the first five minutes of the Qualifying Final cannot be underestimated in regards to the telling effect this may have had to our overall chances of finals success. All three players had been extremely good contributors for us for the majority of the season and were hard to replace so late into our 2016 campaign. Let’s not forget Sturt, who beat us in the Qualifying Final, went onto win the premiership too and didn’t have to face the rampaging Crows outfit we copped in the First Semi. Facing an Adelaide side with 21 AFL-listed players to contend with and a senior AFL team still in finals contention made an already tough task an even more difficult assignment.

Looking back on some highlights of the season, to win all 10 home games at Hickinbotham Oval for the first time in our 20 year history down there was an amazing achievement. As was victory away at Centrals and also Norwood at the Parade after five years of losing there. To finish equal top with the Eagles (only second by percentage) was also something special we should all feel very proud of and hopefully will motivate the playing group and support staff again heading into 2017.

How can we forget Brett Eddy’s amazing Ken Farmer Medal winning season, finishing on top of the goalkicking table after the home and away season some 20 goals clear of his nearest rivals. The team certainly helped Brett as we improved from being the second worse offensive team in the previous season to rise to the highest scoring team in 2016 – without going too poorly defensively either. This is a credit to the team and coaches in achieving this result. It is no surprise to see Brett’s hard work and perseverance over the past few years rewarded with a shot at the AFL with Port Adelaide.

Congratulations to all our award winners for 2016. Well done to Brede Seccull (first time winner) and Joel Cross (third time), who tied for first in one of the tightest vote counts I have ever been involved with, as well as Brett Eddy who was just three votes adrift in third. It was a very fitting reward for all three players who were clearly the consistent standouts for our team this season without doubt.

It would also be remiss of me to forget to acknowledge Emmanuel Irra being selected by Port Adelaide as a Category B Rookie. I often referred to Emmanuel as “The Excitement Machine” and it is of no surprise his dashing

style of play caught the eye of the Power. However, E-Man is also a tremendously hard worker and talented player. His chance in the AFL is well deserved.

Congratulations also to Sam Draper, who was rookie listed by Essendon from our U18s program. For someone to come from picking up a footy for the first time only nine months ago to being drafted to the AFL is a testament to Sam’s work ethic and the wonderful work of Tony Bamford and his Talent Pathway Program.

We only played a total of 31 players in the senior team this season, which was a tremendous result, especially from our strength and conditioning and medical team led admirably by Tom Debenedictis, Kris Krotiris, Doctors Stephen Gilchrist and Randal Williams, Head Trainer Doug Stevens and Ian Kershaw along with all other support staff under them. To get Tom Fields back, recruit Rigby Barnes, Codey Ellison, Richard Newell and then see such huge improvement and development in players like Tyson Brown, Matt Rankine, Emmanuel Irra, Nic Scwharz, Scott Taylor, Alex Cailotto, Luke Durdin, Jackson McMahon, Sam Overall was so pleasing. In the reserves waiting to take the next big step are Ben Heaslip, Hayden Nichols, Joey Haines, Reggie Moyle, Cody Szust, Tom Jolly and Rhys Bartram.

To all the players, I have said to them at the seasons end that they are really so close now if they are all prepared to stick together and keep working hard whilst continuing to learn and challenge each other. They really are a fantastic bunch of players and wonderfully supported by all the Club’s coaches and support staff. South Adelaide deserves to taste the success it ultimately craves for, but everyone needs to continue to give it their best shot to be able to achieve that.

This club has come so far in the past three years and is now highly regarded and respected because of it. We should all feel very proud about that because we have genuinely earned it by the way our team goes out and competes to their best most weeks now.

By the time of reading this I will have begun my next journey as an Academy Coach at Collingwood. I would like to take this moment to sincerely thank everyone involved at South Adelaide for embracing me during my time with the Club. I could not have enjoyed my time in Noarlunga any more than I did. Leaving was not an easy decision, but that was made a little easier knowing the team has been left in the very capable hands of Garry Hocking.

All the best.Brad Gotch

JUNIOR BOYS FOOTBALLUNDER 18 REPORTThis year we used 51 players at U18 level. To break that down in more detail, seven U19 players, 19 U18 players, 18 U17 players and seven U16 players. Only two of the 51 played every game at U18 level, they were Jesse McKinnon and Jackson Daniels.

Our preseason started back in November 2015, with a new coaching team that included the returning Boyd Austin and Gavin Riddle joined by new coaches Darren Mason and Matt Austin. We also introduced a new face to our Strength and Conditioning team with Todd Carr joining Brett Caldwell (Conditioning) and Charlotte Mathews (Strength & Mobility). We had over 70 players participate in the preseason program from November to the end of March. The lads trained three times a week for four weeks before Christmas, with sessions at both Hickinbotham Oval as well as Mt Compass Football Club. Thank you to the whole Mt Compass community for allowing us to use their oval and facilities. The Assistant coaches all took control of the skill acquisition aspect of the pre-Christmas program, designing and implementing drills around their particular skill. The Strength and Conditioning coaches love this time of the year, it is when they can get their hands dirty and get some big distances into the players legs without having to worry about game day requirements.

In January, we had to introduce our players to the new “Anti-density” rules of the SANFL U16 and U18 competitions. These rules/guidelines are designed by the AFL and promote a more open style of football that allows players to showcase their individual talent. They have been used at TAC Cup level in Victoria for a few years and are now standard across the country in all State League U18 competitions. This was a significant change for all our players who had been in our U16 and U18 programs the year before and training time on the oval had to be replaced with more education sessions in front of the white board and projector screen. On top of this, the players were exposed to a lot more “game simulation” type training in the early months of 2016.

This year we again held a training camp over two days and one night at the club. The players were very keen to do it again after we tried it the year before. It is not the traditional type of camp where the players are worked to exhaustion. At our camp, we focused more on building the team spirit, values and culture. I have to sincerely thank the assistant coaches, staff and leaders of our team for their work done before, during and after the camp driving the processes and our group as a whole. The camp demanded the players work together to get tasks completed on time and to think a little outside the square. It was interesting watching a team of eight players try and find five, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces buried in sand down on the beach. From a coaching perspective, we were able to see how players reacted to different situations under pressure. It was easy to see who the leaders were and what players needed more support and guidance when under pressure and or fatigue.

At this camp we also completed an activity under the supervision of Charles Manning (Face the World Inc.) to

select our first three players into the 2016 leadership group. They were Jesse Fitzgerald (who was later selected by the players, staff and coaches as our Captain), Jesse McKinnon and Joseph Tyllis. These guys, along with Nick Steele, Coby Helyar, Liam Fitt and Jackson Daniels formed the best leadership group I have worked with at U18 level. They are all a credit to themselves, their families and community clubs.

Our season can be split into two halves. The first 10 games and the second 10 games. In the first 10 games we received some significant defeats and won only one game while having two draws against the top-of-the-table and undefeated Eagles at Woodville Oval and also against North Adelaide at Footy Park, who went on to play in the Grand Final. The second 10 games we were able to perform at a much more consistent level. We made a small change to our starting points and defensive set ups at midfield stoppages, rotated some different players into our midfield and introduced our best U16 players. We won five games and lost five games in this period and played our best footy for the year. At the end of the year we improved in all our Key Performance Indicators and became a much harder team to play against.

Congratulations to our award winners this year. Our Best & Fairest – Henry Bruce, Runner-Up – Joseph Tyllis and 3rd Best & Fairest – Jesse Fitzgerald, who also took out our Best Team Man award. Our Best Junior Clubman award went to Nicholas Scanlan and Nicholas Steele finished as our leading goal kicker with 30 goals for the season, including a bag of 10 against Central District! Our Rising Star of the year was Sam Draper, who was in his first year of playing footy coming from a soccer background. Sam now finds himself on an AFL list after being drafted to Essendon Football Club as the first player selected at the AFL Rookie draft in November. We wish Sam all the very best.

We also saw Dylan Whimpress, Nathan Kreuger and Sam Draper selected in the initial U18 State Squad, with Dylan playing very well against Victoria Country at Etihad Stadium.

Thank you to all the players and parents for their commitment to the season. To the coaches Boyd, Gavin, Darren and Matt. Thanks very much for your time, expertise and support. I want to also thank Neill Sharpe, Brad Gotch, Adam Blakely and Tom Debenedictis at senior level for their support of the U18 program this year and thank them for the opportunities they provided our players during the season. I will also take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Director of Football, David Kappler who has been a constant supporter of our junior programs and myself as Talent Manager. Thanks for all your advice, knowledge and encouragement over the past four years David.

On behalf of all the players and staff I also wish to thank and acknowledge the SAFC Past Players and Officials Association and the Panther Club for the ongoing support of all our junior footy programs.

Tony Bamford - U18 Head Coach

UNDER 16 REPORT

The 2016 U16 Centre of Excellence program began all the way back in October 2015. We invited the best talent in our zone to be involved in our elite program that teaches players to better themselves with physical testing, education and skill acquisition sessions held at Flinders University.

Our pre-season program commenced in the New Year with a very different coaching panel. We unfortunately lost head coach Julian Farkas (SANFL). However, Warren Ploenges remained and looked after our defenders, we gained Craig Lallard and Nick McCarthy from our U15s and also Derek Cameron from Willunga, while Jason Rayner continued his important role as the runner.

Our objective as coaches and as a program is to produce players with the appropriate tools and experiences to succeed at the next level of the Talent Pathway. It was very obvious early on that we had a group that was very advanced and the work Julian and Tony had done over the previous 3-4 years was starting to show. Being my first year as coach and with the continuity of the modified game style from the seniors the players were able pick things up very quickly.

Our early form was very good. We started the year off with a big 59-point win over Glenelg at home on Easter Thursday and followed that with comfortable 57-point win against 2015 Premiers Sturt. The players were playing with great confidence, showcased some exceptional team football and the wins kept coming. We enjoyed big wins against North Adelaide (78 points), Central District (61), Norwood (67) and West Adelaide (54).

Through the first six rounds of the season, our average margin of victory was over 10 goals!

After securing a top four spot in the finals, our last aim was to beat the undefeated Eagles and try and claim top spot. Finishing as Minor Premiers has the advantage of being able to choose the time you play your first final against fourth. Unfortunately we went down to Woodville-West Torrens by three goals with our worst performance of the year.

This result meant we would now have to play Glenelg at 7:30pm on the Thursday night at Footy Park. After coming off our worst performance of the year against the Eagles we were unable to bounce back against Glenelg. We came out of the blocks really well but could not capitalise on the scoreboard. It was a wet and slippery night and the Glenelg players adapted far better to the conditions than we did. It was our biggest defeat of the season and a 20 goal turnaround from Round One. Glenelg would eventually win the premiership.

Whilst the scoreboard and ladder are easy ways for us to judge our season we also take into consideration promotion of players to the next level as an indicator of the success of the program. We had 10 players selected to the initial squad of 45 for the U16 State Squad – Robert Irra, Tate Coleman, Sam Whitbread, Eamon Wilkinson, Jonty Manuel, Tom Sparrow, Hayden Sampson, Job Colwell, Joel Beeche and Daniel Sladojevic. Of those guys, four represented South Australia at the AFL National Championships in Whitbread, Wilkinson, Coleman and Irra. Those boys now own Championship Medallions as South Australia claimed the title.

11 players were invited to join the U18s program for the remainder of the season to fast track their development, with seven playing at SANFL U18 level – Tate Coleman, Jonty Manuel, Tyler Davies, Sam Whitbread, Eamon Wilkinson, Hayden Sampson, Job Colwell.

Congratulations to our award winners for 2016

MVP – Sam Whitbread

Runner-Up – Hayden Sampson

Equal 3rd – Tate Coleman, Tyler Davies and Jonty Manuel

Thanks once again to all those involved in the U16s program who assist in the ways you do.

To the players, you are a talented bunch and have been a pleasure to coach this season. I wish you each of you the very best in all your future endeavours!

JUNIOR GIRLSFOOTBALL

Women’s football has continued its rapid growth around the nation in 2016. We have seen the success of AFL Women’s exhibition games result in the introduction of the AFL Women’s League and SANFL Women’s league. Meanwhile, growing numbers at grassroots level also indicate female football will maintain its rapidly growing participation rates.

What was once a relatively unexplored market just a few years ago is now clearly something clubs must factor into their future planning.

South Adelaide’s girls backed up their successful 2015 seasons with commendable performances on the field again in 2016. Our Under-16s claimed the 2016 Macca’s Talent Shield as they played in their second Grand Final in as many years and finished the season undefeated. Meanwhile, our Under-14s also remained very competitive – only losing one game for the season and missing their Grand Final by just percentage.

However, the success of these fledgling junior programs should not only be measured by the final scores. In 2016, South Adelaide was again the pacesetter for participation in the SANFL’s female junior programs. In the second year of the junior girls competition, South Adelaide boasted a league-high 65 registered girls to play across our Under-14 and Under-16 sides.

Thank yous must go to Scott Patching (Under-16 Coach), Brad Read (Under-14 Coach), Tom Fields (Female Football Coordinator) and every parent and family member involved for their dedication to helping us provide an elite program for the talented female footballers in our zone.

CLUB NEWSLICENCED CLUB REPORTIf 2015 was a year that saw both hardship and prosperity for the licenced Club then 2016 has certainly been a year of change. The unpredictability within the hospitality industry due to lack of disposable expenditure for households, poor economic conditions and general tightening of belts signalled a full review of the licenced club’s gaming, food and beverage departments.

Some very important factors were highlighted as a result of this review and are now being implemented across the venue.

Our Gaming room required updating for a number of reasons and I am pleased to announce this is now complete. We have purchased new machines and changed the games on other ones, not only to make the room compliant with legislation but also for that competitive edge over our neighbours. We are managing to maintain our weekly turnover at a sustainable level and are quietly confident this can continue into the New Year. This will be critical if we are to remain profitable in an industry expecting between 5-10% downturn due to the $5 maximum bet limit in effect from the 1st January.

The food and beverage review uncovered some gaps in our current offerings compared to the market place. We have already moved to implement various new activities within the venue to increase patronage and grow our revenue. We have employed a new Head Chef Danielle Smith, who has great experience in running Hotels, Large 1000 capacity mining sites and recently Mt Lofty. Danielle has already made some great changes to the menu and salad and veg bar and we look forward to her new function menus for 2017.

Our new direction will focus on weekly promotions to help us engage and maintain customers, these include – Trivia Nights Tuesday with a curry or ribs and wings, 2-for-1 Schnitzels on Wednesday, Steak night and Poker on Thursdays, Fish n Chips and Karaoke on Friday, moving Kids Eat Free to Friday and Saturday and also a Parmi n Pint deal all weekend. We have implemented daily drink specials with pints from $6 all day everyday 12pm-6pm and various other beverage promotions. We are now also part of the Entertainment Book and Shop a Docket family.

The function room will be a major focus for 2017 and a great opportunity for us to grow part of the business which has been relatively quiet in recent years. We have employed Charmaine Kiley from the Marion Sports and Community Club as our new Function and Sales Manager and look forward to her building this side of our business.

Charmaine, Danielle and I also have some great initiatives planned for match days, and we look forward to sharing them with you over the coming months. I am also excited about building on our relationship with both the Panther Club and Past Players, to help maximise our opportunities within the captive home game market.

Everyone here in the Licensed Club has had a busy and rewarding year and we are all looking forward to an even busier year in 2017. With the Panthers continuing their success on the field we are hoping for good crowds in 2017 and we hope to see more of you more often.

Thank you for your continued support and patronage. Have a great Christmas and we hope you have a safe and prosperous New Year.

Go the Panthers!

Regards,

Peter Apostolopoulos

PANTHER CLUB REPORTThanking all those who have supported the Panther Club with membership, donations and for all of you who have continued to support our BBQ and Canteen on home games. Thank you so much. Without this support we would not be able to help the footballers coming through the ranks, especially with the Centre of Excellence Panther Club Football Academy Program, plus other Junior programs that we are supporting.

Most of you would have noticed the lovely hooded jumpers that the juniors were once again wearing this year; they were one of the things that we have paid for as a yearly thing. These tops were for their championships. They really looked great and the boys appreciated it with the parents also thanking us. What a great job Tony Bamford does with the juniors.

We also support the League with requirements that they need, as well as the Knuckey Cup and the Players Achievement awards, and it is fantastic that some of our top players have signed on again for 2017. Unfortunately some have gone other ways and some were picked up in the draft.

Of course by now you would all be aware that our very popular coach Brad Gotch has joined Collingwood in the AFL. We wish him all the best. He will now be at home with his wife Michelle and younger son Seb. Of course we are all sad to see him go.

The Panther Club has had a reasonably good year in 2016. Thanks to all of our hard working volunteer workers. But things are getting tough as everything is going up in price and we are always trying to keep our prices at a reasonable level.

We are looking for people to volunteer on a roster basis to work in our BBQ & Canteen on match days. Even if it is only for a couple of hours. We desperately need your help!

I must also thank our sponsors together with our two Patrons, The Hon. Margaret Nyland AM & Peter Alexander.

This year we lost one of our great Panther Club and Past

CLUB NEWSPlayer supporters, Mike Tormay, who for years always supported both groups, not only with his membership, but always with a donation as well. He will be sadly missed. Some of the others that we have lost were Max Beck, Beverly Fisher (Bob’s wife) Dave Flanagan and past players David Baker, Brian Roberts and Murray Fraser.

We have had to put our membership up his year to $20, as the purchasing of our stock has gone way up in price. You will still get your voucher book with 10 meals, one for each game. Which is still very good value.

A welcome to our new coach Garry Hocking. If you are as good as Brad you will do well.

Maxine McPherson Panther Club Secretary

KINGSTONIAN REPORT The 2016 Kingstonian calendar again proved a big year allowing our group of premium members to enjoy a range of diverse activities .

Among our highlights were:

• the season opening “Meet the new recruits” held at the Saracen’s Head Hotel (March 2016);

• “Opening game luncheon with Glenelg VPs” (March 2016);

• the ‘Blue and White Ball’ (June 2016);

• “Global Macro Economic Update” –with Brett Eddy & the Morgan Stanley team;

• Coriole Wine luncheon (July 2016) ;

• ‘Finals Update with the Coach’ (September 2016);

• ‘Magarey Medal Dinner’ (September 2016).

We continue to plan a race day and golf day before the beginning of the 2017 season.

It was with mixed emotion that we fare-welled senior coach, Brad Gotch, who was a great supporter of the Kingstonians, and always willing to go the next step in making the club bond at all levels. Nothing was ever too much effort for Brad. Throughout the season he would spend time explaining the weekly team challenges, how different players were developing, what could be done to assist players both on and off the field, and generally he communicated in a manner that the club had not experienced in the past. His friendly, intelligent and compassionate manner was outstanding. We wish him well with his future AFL endeavours, and I’m sure we will see him around the club from time to time – as a proud player-parent. The club and the Kingstonians owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Thanks Brad.

We now welcome our new coach, Garry Hocking, who will certainly bring more refinements to the game plan and match day strategies. Having enjoyed playing a round of golf with “Buddha” – his enthusiasm for hitting the small

white ball was the equal of Gotchy’s, and I am sure the 2017 Kingstonian golf event will become even more significant. We wish Garry success for the future and we look forward to enjoying his involvement with Kingstonian events,

The Kingstonian committee has been tireless in its effort to support the Club, and I thank Diané Ranck, Allan Wauchope, Gary Haskins, Rose Senesi, Andrew Osborn, Phil O’Loughlin, Matt Sampson and Luke Axford for their hard work and dedication.

It was with much sadness that in 2016 we saw the passing of David Flanagan, a member of our Kingstonian committee, who had been a long time Board Member, passionate South Adelaide supporter and mate. He will be greatly missed.

2017 Kingstonian Membership is now available through the Club website, and I encourage you to become a member of our group to enjoy the ultimate ‘on field’ and ‘off field’ experiences available to South Adelaide Football Club supporters.

Kingstonian Members enjoy exclusive events, access to players and coaches, and all the entitlements of regular club membership. We have a diverse group who include current and former Board Members, current and former CEOs, past players, club sponsors, volunteers, club stalwarts and diehard Panthers supporters.

Join our group and support the club and our new coach

SOUTH ADELAIDE PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS ASSOCIATIONProudly supported by Australian Civil & Mining Training (John Crabb & Family)

Before directing you to our 2016 Report, I would like to say on behalf South Adelaide’s Past Players & Officials Committee and members our thank you to Brad Gotch for his work as Senior Coach over the last three years. Brad will be sadly missed. He has certainly been a major influence in bringing the South Adelaide Football Club back as a force in the SANFL competition.

We wish him well with his appointment with the Collingwood Football Club, knowing he will have an eager eye out on our on-field progress in seasons to come.

We congratulate the Board and Football Department on appointing Garry Hocking to replace Brad.

The year 2016 was been another ‘’so close but so far” for our seniors. We won all of our home games, which had our historians searching their record books to find the last time this was achieved. It was certainly a first ever for Hickinbotham Oval. We did notice an increase in support as the season went on, especially the home games.

To our hardcore supporters and our new group the ‘’All Day boys and girls’’ who have become the bench mark for their very solid support both to our players and the Huts bar takings, we say thank you very much.

Thank you also to our members, whose numbers stayed consistent to previous years. Many paid extra, donating to our juniors which continues to be our main charter. This year $4,000 was donated to junior football.

We also were able to purchase a new ice machine ($5,750) which will continually supply ice to junior and senior football and also Jimmy Deane’s etc. Meanwhile, we are sharing the cost of the mobile toilets on the western hill on match days with SAFC.

Our seniors soup night run by Thready and his team have continued to be a success. Once again Bassy was our best on ground for consumption. We pass on our thanks to Becks Bakery for their support on these nights.

Our signature night, the Knuckey Cup, was a very entertaining and an excellent affair in 2016. Congratulations to both Joel Cross and Brede Seccull on their tie – a first for our most prestigious award since 1936! Both had outstanding seasons. Congratulations to Brett Eddy who is the recipient of the SAPP&O trophy as the leading goal kicker for the season. He also won the 2016 Ken Farmer Medal as the SANFL top scorer with 68 goals through the minor rounds (he added six more during the Finals to finish with 74 goals in 20 matches).

Well done to senior players Brett Eddy and Emmanuel Irra, who were both drafted by Port Adelaide and also to junior Sam Draper, who was selected by Essendon. They will be missed in the blue and white, but we congratulate them on realizing their dreams at the highest level. Best of luck for 2016 (except at Hickinbotham Oval).

We are looking for volunteers with painting experience to help paint the inside of the footballers change rooms. We have committed to assist with the purchase of paint etc. from one of our sponsors (TBA) to get the job done hopefully by the end of the year or January 2017. Please contact me or leave your details on my mobile 0432 718 741, I can then liaise with Neill Sharpe to get the ball rolling.

To Neill Sharpe, Matt, Shannen, and the team from Jimmy Deane’s we thank you for your positive ongoing support.

Once again this year, my committee, Gary Mousley, David & Lorraine Earl, John & Bev McDougall, Jim Green, Marc Holford, Ron Hames and my wife Carolyn (who had lifesaving surgery earlier this year), have been outstanding.

Vale; Michael Tormey, Dave Flanagan, Max Beck, Brian Roberts, Murray Fraser, David Baker. All were outstanding club men.

On behalf of my committee I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Premiership New Year.

Bob Swanson President – Past Players & Officials Association

Explanatory Notes* Coaches were not a fearure of football until the early years of last century - up until that time, the captain and senior players generally took younger play-ers under their wing and spent time with them - there are, for example, accounts of Reedman doing this with the young players in the 1890’s, but no formal appointment of a coach until the 1908.

* Best Player - although there is a press record of F.Mehrtens receiving an award for best player in 1886, again it was not a feature that best players were selected on a yearly basis. It was the belief that the team performance was more important. In 1923 the Knuckey Cup was instituted, and perhaps this could be taken as the starting point for B&F (although even in the year this award began the committee decided it should be for the “most useful” player, reflect-ing the ideal performance over individual ability).

* Top goalkickers - in the first 10-15 years of the last century, there is sometimes a descrepancy between Annual Reports and weekly press reports about goalkickers. Annual Reports are often unreliable in this regard, and the figures here reflect weekly match results published in the newspaper of the day. For the years 1876 - 1902, press reports are the only records availbale, and some of the earlier ones are sometimes dubious.

Marketing Director: Marc Makrid elected

Hospitality Director: Matthew Mitchell elected

Mr Luckhurst-Smith welcomed Matthew Mitchell to the role of Hospitality Director and also welcomed his knowledge and expertise to assist the licensed Club.

ITEM 6 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT2015 was a year of missed opportunities on the field and it was disappointing to miss out on finals football due to late injuries. SANFL clubs do have a number of challenges not the least of which is the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval. Although the success of the new stadium is a financial benefit to clubs and football in general, it is overshadowed by the ability to draw such big crowds and the negative impact on crowds at suburban grounds.

ITEM 7 SENIOR COACH REPORTSenior Coach Brad Gotch addressed the meeting. Stating that in all it was a disappointing season to fall short of the finals. After losing three players to the AFL, the retirement of our Captain Josh Thewlis and the dismissal of Nick Murphy we had a number of challenges to fill those positions and due to late season injuries we couldn’t do it. Brad then provided an overview of new recruits including the return of Tom Fields from Carlton and expressed excitement at the prospects for 2016. The football department has been working hard to ensure that we recruit the best possible players for the Club and we think with a number of players overcoming injuries we will be in a good position.

ITEM 8 FINANCE REPORTMr Miles delivered the financial report and provided an extensive overview:

2015 Financial Result• Difficult trading conditions for Football and Hospitality

industries continues• Decline in performance of Licenced Club halted, but no

2016 Financial Outlook• Significantly improved financial result in 2015• Still trading loss – Financial hard work and cost control

must continue• Initial signs of improving revenue in Licensed Club/

Gaming• Improving revenue from traditional income areas• SANFL monitoring all club finances more closely

to create sustainable competition (more reporting benchmarks/ controls in place)

• Management team doing an excellent job• Budgeting for a small trading profit in 2016

Mr Miles moved the adoption of the Financial Statements - Mr Eye seconded - CARRIED

ITEM 9 APPOINTMENT OF AUDITORMr Miles moved that NRM Johnson be re-appointed as auditor. Mr McIntyre seconded CARRIED

ITEM 10 SAFC LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEES:

Two life members were nominated as follows:

Gary MattersAge – 72SAFC years of service – 25 yearsRemuneration - $0Head Statistician, League & Reserves, since 2005Statistician, League & Reserves, 1999 – 2005Statistician, Reserves, 1991 -1999Video Operator, Reserves 1990

CommentGary has been an invaluable volunteer for South Adelaide. With the advent of technology and increased statistical analysis required by South Adelaide coaches Gary has been critical.

He quickly picked up and embraced importance of Champion Data stats and vision packages. He has certainly been receptive to working with various Senior Coaches over this time.

At no point has he received financial remuneration in his role, however he has put his hand in his pocket to assist the Club. In 2014 he bought the Football Manager a new laptop. In 2015 he has spent his own money to build a shed to house the equipment required for the behind the goals vision.

Mr Sharpe moved that Gary Matters be granted life membership of the Club Mr Holmes seconded CARRIED

Graham EyAge – 68SAFC Years of Service – 18 yearsRemuneration – Yes

Head Trainer, Centre of Excellence/Development Squads since 2010Trainer, League & Reserves, 1994 – 2007

CommentGraham is coming to the end of his journey at South Adelaide. He’s had some health issues which are impacting on his ability to perform his role. For the past six years he had formed a vital role as Head Trainer with our Centre of Excellence and Development Squads. This role at this level remains more traditional and hands on as they do not have access to Doctors at all and physios on a regular basis.

During the past six seasons Graham has often had to carry the bulk of it at training and game days on his own, as there has been very little consistent trainer support. He has been a willing worker during this time.

His involvement in the Club over such an extended period of time where it has been harder to get people to fill such roles has been noteworthy and deserving of consideration for life membership of South Adelaide.

Mr Sharpe moved that Graham Ey be granted life membership of the Club Mr Kappler seconded CARRIED

ITEM 11 SERVICE AWARDS:

5 Year Merit Certificates:Tom Debenedictis (away in South America)Bryce Heath (hasn’t responded)Brett Knuckey (uncertain due to work)Troy Jacques (will be attending)

10 Year Merit Certificates:Dr Stephen Gilchrist (will be attending)Richard Sheppard (will be attending)Sam Sheppard (uncertain)Steve Meyer (uncertain)

GENERAL QUESTIONS Mr Ploenges noted the $100k contribution of the Hickinbotham family in 2015. Mr Luckhurst-Smith acknowledged that Michael Hickinbotham’s sponsorship during the year was of great benefit to the Club and that the CEO and Andrew Osborn have been doing a great job in increasing sponsorship support and we expect that to increase again in 2016.

As there were no further questions Mr Luckhurst-Smith declared the Annual General Meeting closed at 8:32pm.

SCOPE: We have audited the financial statements of The South Adelaide Footballers’ Club Incorporated for the year ended 31 October 2016 comprising Statements of Profit or Loss and Other Comprehensive Income, Financial Position (Net Assets $6,669,176), Changes in Equity, Cash Flows, and the Notes to the Financial Statements. The elected Board of the Association is responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. We have conducted an independent audit of these financial statements in order to express an opinion on them to the members.

The audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. Our procedures include examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial statements, and the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the financial statements are presented fairly in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards, other mandatory professional reporting requirements and the provisions of the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) so as to present a view which is consistent with our understanding of the Association’s financial position and the results of it’s operations.

The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.

CASH TRANSACTIONS: It is not practical for The South Adelaide Footballers’ Club Incorporated to maintain an effective system of internal control over fund raising activities and cash receipts generally until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, our audit in relation

to cash transactions was limited to amounts recorded.

QUALIFIED AUDIT OPINION: In my opinion, subject to the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have been determined to be necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualification paragraph above not existed, the financial statements present fairly in accordance with applicable Accounting Standards, other mandatory professional reporting requirements and the Associations Incorporations Act (SA), the financial position of The South Adelaide Footballers’ Club Incorporated as at 31 October 2016 and the results of it’s operations and cash flows for the year then ended.

AUDITORS INDEPENDENCE DECLARATIONPersuant to the requirements of Section 307C of the Corprorations Act 2001, I declare that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, during the year ended 31 October 2016 there have been:

1. No contraventions of the auditor independence requirements as set out in the Corporations Act 2001 in relation to the audit; and

2. No contraventions of any applicable code of professional conduct in relation to the audit.
