kingsport history

Situated in the Northeast corner of Tennessee and privileged to possess one of the richest historic grounds in America, Kingsport is an exceptional jewel among surrounding treasures. Prior to being in Tennessee, the area previously known as King’s Port was part of four different Virginia counties and one North Carolina county.

In the mid-18th century as the eastern states became crowded, adventurous men looking to move further west discovered what is now known as Kingsport. Daniel Boone and his axemen left an area known as the Boatyard District and Long Island on the Holston River and marked a trail through Cumberland Gap for the pioneers who were to follow. Four years later, two expeditions left “Long Island” to travel west by water. In the late 18th century, this was America’s frontier, and a bustling center of activity and enterprise. It was the first stop on the western migration, and the patterns set by its settlers became the framework for what historians call “the American Experience.” Therefore, King’s Port was an area where many pioneers gathered to decide if they were going west by land or water, and consequently, it became an important shipping point on the Holston River. During this period, King’s Port was also the source of relaxation for three American presidents, and was frequently visited by frontiersmen like Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.

After the construction of the railroad bypassed King’s Port in the mid-1800’s, travel through the area declined. Then early in the 20th century, businessmen who needed to market area products including the Appalachian coalfields, proceeded with another plan for a railroad. This vision and implementation opened the way for industry and commerce, heralding a new age of growth because of the river access and the completion of the Clinchfield Railroad in 1915. The city fathers commissioned Dr. John Nolen to develop America’s first “Model City”; thus Kingsport became chartered in 1917. Its design was executed, placing residential neighborhoods and the famous Church Circle on high ground, industry along the river, and a commercial district with row houses in between. Kingsport seems to have been the first municipality in Tennessee to be established under a city manager-board of mayor and alderman government.

exchange placeExchange Place, a living history farm, is Kingsport’s escape from today’s fast-paced life. The site was once a community that served as a self-supporting plantation and relay station along the Old Stage Road. Exchange Place, located on the Preston Farm, recaptures life in the early 1800s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, six of the eight buildings are original, restored structures built between 1820 and 1850. The farmstead received its name from the “exchanges” of horses and currencies.

As part of Exchange Place’s commitment to preserve 19th century farm life, period livestock now reside at Exchange Place. Demonstrations, including washing, spinning, weaving, ironing, quilting, candle dipping and basketry are frequently held during festivals and by special arrangements. “Exchanges” still take place today at the country store. Instead of exchanging currency, crafts made by local artisans may be purchased. You can even mail a letter at the 1800s working post office. Exchange Place is open for tours and by special arrangement for hosting events.

netherland innListed on the National Register of Historical Sites, the Netherland Inn rises above the Holston River. The restored Inn faces the Old Stage Road in the heart of Kingsport’s Boat Yard District, an area along the Holston River that served as a migratory spot for settlers to build boats for their westward trip during the mid-1700s.

William King originally built Netherland Inn between 1802 and 1808 as a point where he could ship salt westward. He later sold the Inn in 1818 to Richard Netherland who procured a stage contract and established the Inn and Tavern for travelers along the Old Stage Road.

The Inn hosted many famous persons, including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk.

The Inn is filled with museum furnishings that depict an intimate study of life in one of the South’s most important American frontier settlements. The property features a Log Cabin Children’s Museum and Schoolhouse, Historic Flat Boat Replica and Bank Barn.

The Inn is open May through October and by special arrangement. For more information, contact Netherland Inn, P.O. Box 293, Kingsport, TN 37662 (423) 247-3211 • www.netherlandinn.com • H

This fossil site is internationally recognized as one of the most significant prehistoric discoveries in North America!

Visitors to the museum first enjoy the Wayne G. Basler Permanent Exhibition Hall. The permanent exhibit hall features a short documentary film about the discovery of Gray Fossil Site and a spectacular diorama of specimens found at the 4.5-7 million year old site including extinct saber-tooth cats, rhinos, tapirs, red pandas, and alligators. Passing through the exhibit, visitors travel forward in time learning about the evolving ecology of the southern Appalachian region. The permanent exhibit area leads into in an interactive replica of the museum’s onsite preparation laboratory where visitors can explore the tools and techniques used by paleontologists to reconstruct the Mio-Pliocene environment. This area culminates in “new finds” exhibits which portray recent discoveries at the Gray Fossil Site and other fossil sites in the southern Appalachians.

In addition to the permanent exhibit, visitors to the Niswonger Gallery can enjoy a variety of natural science themed temporary exhibits throughout the year. All access passes include temporary exhibits as well as fossil site tours. education

From the very beginning, Kingsport has prioritized public education. Town founders hired Columbia University to design the public school system from scratch circa 1917. Since then, our graduates have gone on to the best colleges and universities in the nation. Dobyns-Bennett High School has been repeatedly recognized as a Top American Public High School by Newsweek magazine.

Outside the classroom, local students also succeed in sports, music and other activities. Our student-athletes are tied third in overall state championships for public schools and our award-winning band is repeatedly invited to participate in the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades.

Premier education doesn’t stop after high school. In 2009, Kingsport received the prestigious Innovation In American Government Award from Harvard University for its higher education initiative. Due to the city’s entrepreneurial spirit and cooperation with the local community college and four-year colleges/universities, more than 2,100 students now attend classes downtown in the Academic Village. Also, the Kingsport Alliance for Continued Learning, through East Tennessee State University and the ENCORE leadership program, encourages seniors to stay academically-engaged.
