Welcome to Kirkcudbright

Dear VisitorWelcome to Kirkcudbright. This booklet has been produced by the Kirkcudbright Forum to inform and invite you to come and share the attractions of our beautiful town.

Kirkcudbright has long had a reputation as an “Artists’ Town” and you will find art and craft exhibitions here every month of the year especially in July and August when the Town Hall is the venue for a major art exhibition which this year is ‘The Glasgow Boys at Kirkcudbright’ and we hold our Art & Crafts Trail for one long weekend at the end of July.

Our Kirkcudbright’s Summer Festivities continues to provide a fabulous programme of entertainment from spring through to autumn. In addition the Rotary Club have organised a cycling event in August and to delight the taste buds we have a Food Festival in October.

We also have a range of attractions, from ancient monuments and museums to a wildlife park, which you can find in and around the town. Don’t worry about where to stay as the town and its surrounds offer a wide range of accommodation for holiday makers from camping sites to hotels, details of which can be found at the back of this booklet.

We are justly proud of our town and we invite you to come and be entertained by all that Kirkcudbright has to offer you, your friends and your family.

Kirkcudbright - A tourist Paradise

Kirkcudbright is situated on the Dee estuary where it meets Kirkcudbright Bay in the beautiful Dumfries & Galloway region of south west Scotland. This picturesque working harbour town has what the Rough Guide to Scotland calls the “most beguiling of town centres, a charming medley of simple brick cottages with medieval pends, Georgian villas and Victorian town houses, many attractively painted”.

Kirkcudbright (pronounced Kir-Coo-Bree) is an ancient port and county town set on the warm south west coast of Scotland amongst the rolling hills and farmland of Galloway.

The town and the surrounding landscape have inspired artists for over 100 years and continue to do so. Many famous names in Scottish Art including E.A.Hornel, Jessie M King, S.J.Peploe and Charles Oppenheimer have either lived here or were regular visitors. The town’s attractive High Street and its closes, preserving the medieval layout of the town, provided a focus for the artists, many of whom made their homes and set up their studios in its elegant 18th century buildings. Now following in this tradition, WASPS have developed 14 new studios at Claverhouse and Cannonwalls in the High Street which have already been let out to artists and makers. If you visit during Spring Fling or during an Open Day in the summer you will be able to view this exciting new venture. Favourite subjects for the artists were the Tolbooth, now a visitor centre for the town’s artistic heritage, and the ruin of MacLellan’s Castle, which dominates the present-day port, now home to a busy fishing fleet. Back in 1622, it was from this same harbour that the first Scottish emigrants left for Nova Scotia.

The town still retains a tranquil and unspoilt beauty while at the same time being a popular summer holiday destination for families with young children, attracted by the beauty of the area and the fabulous annual Summer Festivities programme including the popular Scottish Nights in the Harbour Square.

This booklet has been designed to provide you with sufficient information to tempt you to visit Kirkcudbright, but, should you need more then there are a number of useful websites mentioned, including the ‘Visit Kirkcudbright’ website which is at www.kirkcudbright.co.uk.

ThE GLASGOW BOYS AT KiRKCUDBRiGhT Saturday 2 July to Monday 29 August

This exhibition of paintings by artists from the ‘Glasgow Boys’ will be on show in Kirkcudbright Town Hall from the 2nd July to the 29th August 2011. Curated by Roger Billcliffe, and following the highly successful ‘The Glasgow Boys’ exhibition shown in Glasgow and London in 2010, this is an entirely new selection of works from public and private sources. It features paintings by Hornel, Henry and Guthrie – three artists whose work in and around Kirkcudbright is of particular significance in the story of the ‘Boys’.

SCULPTURE SYMPOSiUM iN KiRKCUDBRiGhT Saturday 23 July to Sunday 31 July

Last year was the first year for a Sculpture Symposium in Scotland and it took place in Kirkcudbright, with 7 sculptors taking part. It was held to be a huge success with the resulting pieces still here in Kirkcudbright for you to admire. This has led to plans for it to be an annual event and work is under way to raise the necessary funds for a further larger event of International status to come to the town at the end of July.

‘st Ives of the north’ A thriving Community

Kirkcudbright earned its name as an artists’ town due to the importance and reputation of the artists who lived and worked here from the 1880s. The reasons artists came to paint, and stay, are as true today as they were then, and there is still a thriving community of artists living in and around Kirkcudbright.

WASPS Artists’ Studios is an award-winning charity which provides affordable studio space to support the careers of up to 750 visual artists working in Scotland today. In December they held their 1st Open Day for the public to the 14 new studio spaces they have developed and let, in Kirkcudbright High Street.

Over 150 exhibitors take part in more than 60 venues with lots of opportunity to talk to them and purchase their work. You can even make or paint something yourself to take home or leave as part of a group creation, as workshops where you can participate have become a popular feature. Refreshments are available in many venues and if you time it correctly you will be serenaded by live music.

Marathon Day

Riding of the Marches

Friday July 22nD

starting from Dee Walk

If you like horses then you will love this. A wonderful spectacle of a large number of horses and riders, beautifully presented, riding through the streets of Kirkcudbright.

In the year 1455 Kirkcudbright was given Royal Burgh status by virtue of a charter granted by King James II. The King granted the lands of Over & Nether Borelands, Millflats, Milnburn, Creekpark, Hughans, Calfward and Castle-mains to the Burgh. A messenger

from the King, known as the Pursuivant, was dispatched under escort to Kirkcudbright, carrying with him the charter and seal which would make Kirkcudbright a Royal Burgh. As he neared the town a Courier was sent forward to warn of his imminent arrival. The Cornet, a cavalry officer of the day, was sent out to meet the Pursuivant, and together they rode round the boundaries referred to in the charter.

This act is recreated annually by the Kirkcudbright Cornets Club, with their spectacular ceremony of the Riding of the Marches.

If you are feeling fit and up to the challenge then why not come and take part in Kirkcudbright Academy’s annual Half Marathon? This is the 28th event and the course is one of the most scenic in Scotland. Leaving from the Academy grounds, the course winds through the town before heading out over the bridge and along the B727 beside the River Dee towards Nunmill. You continue through the countryside towards Twynholm and the home of the ‘David Coulthard Museum’ before dropping down to Cumstoun and continuing to the Tongland Bridge built by Thomas Telford. From the bridge you will head back into Kirkcudbright and along St Mary Street, continuing through the town to the finishing line at the Academy.

Walkers set out at 11am and the runners at 1pm. There will also be the Beeches Run at 11.2km for those wanting a shorter course!

There are various stalls and activi-ties for spectators, including a 1.5

The Tolbooth Art Centre is, as might be expected, housed in the town’s old stone Tolbooth, situated in the corner of the ‘L’ shaped High Street. This fine historic landmark has been restored and given a new lease of life with a busy programme of contemporary art and craft exhibitions taking place throughout the year.

In particular, the Tolbooth provides the interested visitor with an introduction to the town’s artistic history through a thirteen minute audio-visual show.

Should you need refreshments, they are available in the small ground floor cafe.

MacLellan’s Castle was the home of Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie.Sir Thomas was provost of Kirkcudbright and a powerful man in local politics. Following the Protestant Reformation in 1560, he acquired the site and buildings of the friary of Greyfriars, established in the town by James II in 1449, and set about building himself a new residence in its place. Build started in 1577 and by 1582, MacLellan’s Castle was sufficiently complete for him to move in. Five years later, he and his second wife, Grissel, entertained their sovereign, James VI, in this spacious house. Sadly by 1752, when sold to Robert Maxwell the castle was reported to be roofless. It was transferred to state ownership in 1912 and is now managed by Historic Scotland.

The castle has an unusual ground plan. Based on a standard L-plan design, it has an additional tower in the SE corner, and two other smaller projections between the main block and the entrance wing, both allowing occupants to move more easily around the house and providing increased accommodation. All in all, there were about 15 family rooms. The ruins are very well preserved and well worth a visit. Spacious stairs lead to the first floor where the main living quarters were, including the splendid great hall. The hall was heated by a suitably enormous fireplace, over ten feet wide, which boasted a ‘laird’s lug’ or spy-hole for eavesdropping on the conversations in the great hall. An important facility for a provost!

The remains of this late 16th century noble residence demonstrate how architecture evolved from the heavily defended tower to a more domestic, if grand, house.

Open to the public from April 2005 after a period of conservation, this fine 18th-century town house was bought by Hornel in 1901 and became his home and studio. Behind the fine, pink lime washed exterior lies a delightfully uplifting collection of art, ceramics, literature and furniture together with a magically secret garden. Today, you can come and admire Hornel’s paintings and those of his fellow artists throughout the house, gallery and studio. Some of his extensive collection of books are on display in the library, including works by Burns and many books on local history.

From the studio follow your gaze out into the enchanting garden, where you too may find inspiration in the light falling across the Dee.

Ownership of the house was transferred to the National Trust for Scotland in 1997, who, in 2004, embarked on a two-year conservation project which was so well done it gained the 2006 RICS conservation award.

A programme of events is run throughout the year, including garden parties, music recitals and lectures. Broughton House is also licensed for civil partnership and marriage ceremonies

Harbour Cottage Gallery

tel 01557 330073March to December

You will find the gallery in a picturesque setting by Kirkcudbright’s busy fishing harbour, sitting in the shadow of MacLellan’s Castle.

The Harbour Cottage Gallery was converted in 1957 from an eighteenth-century fisherman’s cottage scheduled for demolition. This initiative was inspired by local artists and businessmen who saw the need to save an attractive corner of the town linked with

the opportunity to create a permanent exhibition space for their work.

The gallery, which is on two floors, is managed by Trustees, and continues to fulfill its original role. It offers a busy exhibition programme throughout the year, featuring not only the works of our wealth of local artists and craft-workers, but also increasingly artists from slightly further afield. The gallery’s programme for this year is listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section.

As well as giving an excellent opportunity to allow everyone to view original local art and craftwork not being exhibited elsewhere, the items on display are competitively priced, and in many instances can be removed immediately.

Truly a working gallery offering ready access to unique gifts. So why not come along and treat yourself to something special.

Your visit directly benefits the animals and our work here with them. As an ideal gift our annual scheme allows you to adopt or sponsor any animal in the zoo. New for 2011 – the Squirrel Monkey enclosure. The common squirrel monkey inhabits the tropical rain forest of Central and South America and is among many rainforest animals threatened by deforestation.

The much improved A75 trunk road provides easy access for travellers to Kirkcudbright coming from either the north or south.

From the north, travel via the M74 on the A701 then onto the A75 at Dumfries. Or, if you have more time, then a pleasant alternative is to come down the Ayr road and join the A75 just outside Castle Douglas.

From the south take the M6 north to Carlisle and join the M74. Leave the M74 at Gretna to follow the A75.

Four miles past Castle Douglas turn left for the A711 to Kirkcudbright.
