My brothers and sisters in Christ,

Recently there has been a lot of attention in the media given to the new COVID vaccines

and in many places there is a big push going on. Some places have made it mandatory;

others have called the vaccines our “salvation.”

While it is understandable to be excited about the vaccines, it is important that we reflect carefully on the

moral implications of this push. Vaccines in general are a good idea—stopping the spread of disease is good

for individuals and good for the whole of society. Nevertheless, no vaccine should be considered our

“salvation.” No vaccine can give us eternal life. Only Jesus Christ gives us eternal life. Jesus Christ is our

only Savior.

Furthermore the new COVID vaccines present some other moral questions. On December 21, 2020 the

Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released a “Note on the morality of using some anti-Covid-

19 vaccines.” You can find the whole document here:

This Note contains important moral reflections for all of us to consider. Here are some of the key points.

Some of the anti-COVID vaccines have been produced with or tested on cell lines from aborted human fetuses.

This raises the question of “remote material cooperation” with a grave evil. According to the Note, this kind

of cooperation can be morally acceptable if 1) ethically irreproachable COVID vaccines are not available and

2) there is a grave danger. Furthermore a 2005 document from the Pontifical Academy for Life mentions the

obligation to denounce and reject publicly the moral evil (voluntary abortion) in order for remote passive

material cooperation to be licit. Finally the doctrinal Note reminds us that vaccination should be voluntary

(not coerced or obligatory). The note makes other points encouraging pharmaceutical companies and

government agencies to work on vaccines that do not create problems of conscience, that are effective and

safe, and that are accessible to the poor.

All of these concerns should move us to operate not at “Warp Speed” but rather at “God Speed.” For more

information about particular vaccines, I recommend the website of the Charlotte Lozier Institute which is very

informative.

Mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,,

Recientemente se le ha dado mucha atención a los medios respecto a las nuevas vacunas contra el COVID y en

muchos lugares existe una gran presión actualmente. Algunos lugares lo han impuesto como obligatorio; otros

le han llamado a las vacunas nuestra “salvación.”

Es comprensible sentirse emocionado sobre las vacunas, pero también es importante que reflexionemos

cuidadosamente en las implicaciones morales de esta presión. Las vacunas en general son una buena idea –

detener el contagio de la enfermedad es bueno, tanto para los individuos como para el total de la sociedad. Sin

embargo, ninguna vacuna debería ser considerada nuestra “salvación.” Ninguna vacuna nos puede dar la vida

eterna. Solo Jesucristo nos da la vida eterna. Jesucristo es nuestro único salvador.

Además, la nuevas vacunas presentan algunos cuestionamientos morales. El 21 de diciembre, 2020, el

Vaticano, a través de la Congregación de la Doctrina de la Fe, publicó una “Nota sobre la moralidad del uso

Esta nota contiene importantes reflexiones morales para considerar. He aquí algunas de los puntos mas

importantes. Algunas de las vacunas anti-COVID han sido producidas con, o probadas con líneas de células

provenientes de fetos humanos abortados. Esto levanta la pregunta de “cooperación material remota” con una

grave maldad. De acuerdo a la Nota, este tipo de cooperación puede ser moralmente aceptable si 1) vacunas

contra el COVID éticamente irreprochables no están disponibles y 2) existe un grave peligro. Además, un

documento del 2005 de la Academia Pontifica para la Vida menciona la obligación de denunciar y rechazar

públicamente la moral de maldad (aborto voluntario) para que se vuelva licito el material de cooperación

remoto pasivo. Finalmente, la Nota doctrinal nos recuerda que la vacunación debería ser voluntaria (no

coercitiva u obligatoria). La nota hace otros puntos motivando a las compañías farmacéuticas y agencias

gubernamentales a trabajar en vacunas que no ocasionen problemas de conciencia, que son efectivas y seguras,

y que son accesibles para el pobre.

Todas esas preocupaciones deberían de movernos a cooperar, no a una “Warp Speed” (velocidad de la luz),

sino a una “Buena Velocidad.” Para obtener mas información sobre vacunas particulares, yo recomiendo el

sitio en el internet del Instituto Charlotte Lozier, que es muy informativa.

Infant Baptisms: Congratulations!

We look forward to welcoming your child into the life of the

Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation

classes before having their child baptized. Please call the

Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of your

child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that

godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have

received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and

Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.

WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance

with one of the priests.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in

the Church, or anytime by appointment.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately in

case of emergency, or to schedule a visitation for the

homebound or for the hospitalized.
