Steve Langerud Leads ABI Leadership Iowa Retreat

On October 1st at the Hotel Pattee in Perry, Iowa, Executive Director of the Mayflower

Community Steve Langerud led a portion of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI)

development session for the 40 participants in the 2019-2020 ABI Leadership Iowa program.

A frequent seminar and retreat speaker, Steve led the opening session with the incoming class

of young executives, who are starting their nine-month program to develop leadership skills to

take back to their companies.

Earlier in September, Steve facilitated part of the Association’s annual membership meeting.

For more than 30 years, the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) Foundation has

provided personal and professional development programs for students and adults to develop

Iowa's workforce and leaders through statewide educational programs. The ABI Foundation is

a 501(c)(3) organization annually supported by contributions from corporations, foundations,

and individual donors.

PALS Ambassador Visits Mayflower

On Friday, September 27th, Sparky - a 16-year-old Yorkie mix

from Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS) - visited with

Mayflower residents. Sparky is the first dog from PALS’ Seniors

for Seniors program to visit Mayflower. Blind and mostly deaf, he

was surrendered to PALS by his owner who could no longer care

for Sparky.

Seniors for Seniors is a partnership formed between PALS and

Mayflower by Mindy Bacon, who is a canine myo-manipulative

functional therapist as well as a PALS volunteer and PALS Board

member. This program pairs senior shelter dogs with residents

who wish to engage with animals. The plan is to offer dog visits

every other Friday morning, subject to dog availability.

Mindy is in the process of becoming a Teepa Snow Certified Positive Approach to Care (PAC)

trainer. The PAC program specializes in professional treatment of people with dementia. Mindy

is Mayflower’s Community Engagement Coordinator.

Armchair Traveling Is Happening Again at Mayflower

For two years, Shane Estes, a Mayflower Community resident,

has been hosting “Armchair Travels,” a series of videos about

special destinations during weekly sessions at Mayflower. Shown

in high-resolution video tapes, the hour-and-a-half

entertainment is held at 2:00pm on Tuesdays in the cinema-like

setting of the Kiesel Theatre.

The kick-off to this year’s films was visits to the Swiss cities of Zurich, Luzern, Bern, and

Lausanne. Then, the group moved effortlessly (without leaving their chairs!) to Thailand’s

Andaman Islands where a guided trip through some of the tidal caves was spectacular. The

session finished with a visit to four great European hotels: the Palace Hotel in Luzern,

Switzerland; two hotels in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Lausanne Palace Spa and the Chateau

d’Ouchy; and finally, the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, Germany. This trip took only an hour and a half,

sightseeing included!

Future travels will feature international destinations along with a dose of U.S. cities, typically two

each week in alphabetical order. Audience input at each session helps choose the next

destinations from Shane’s collection. To date, the armchair travelers have visited 30 some

countries and many states.

Chancellor Speaks at Mayflower Forum

Dr. Kristie Fisher, PhD, the Chancellor of the Iowa Valley

Community College District (IVCCD), spoke at a forum

sponsored by the Mayflower Residents Association on October

8th. Included was information about the $32 million district

bond issue on the November 5th ballot.

In addition, Dr. Fisher shared information about current

students and offerings along with her vision for the future of the

three institutions included in the district: Marshalltown

Community College, Iowa Valley Community College

(Grinnell), and Ellsworth Community College (Iowa Falls).

Dr. Fisher assumed the Chancellor duties last July. One of the

members of IVCCD Board of Directors is Paul Pohlson of

Grinnell. Coming from ACT of Iowa City and previously from Kirkwood Community College

(Cedar Rapids), Dr. Fisher earned her M.B.A. from the University of Iowa and her PhD from

Iowa State University in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Don’t Miss Your Chance To VOTE!

Have you moved the Mayflower Community recently or changed your

address within the campus? To vote in the next election on November 5, you will need to update your voter registration to reflect your new address. If you’re unable to vote in person on November 5, you can

request that an absentee ballot be mailed to you. Several members of the Grinnell League of Women Voters will be available on Tuesday, October 14 from 10-11:30 am in Pearson Lounge to assist

anyone wishing to either update their voter registration or request an absentee ballot. They will have the necessary forms and will see that the completed forms are mailed to the county auditor.

Getting Ahead of the Flu at Mayflower

Oh, the dreaded flu! It’s on the way again. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC), “Flu activity in the U.S. is currently low, but flu season is approaching.

Now is the time to get a flu vaccine.”

The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine by the end of

October. Our policy at the Mayflower is that a flu shot is mandatory for all employees, except

in the case of a valid doctor’s excuse. We are always doing our best to keep the dastardly flu

virus away from our campus.

UnityPoint Health—Grinnell Regional Public Health will be offering public vaccination clinics

throughout Poweshiek County. The shot clinic at The Mayflower Community will be Thursday,

October 24th, 9:00-11:00am in the Buckley Dining Room, 619 Park Street, Grinnell. Make sure

you bring your Medicare and insurance cards!

In addition to the shot, we continue to emphasis liberal use of hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes,

and most importantly, constant hand washing. According to Dr. Charles Gerba, an infectious

microbes professor at the University of Arizona, here are hand-washing guidelines:

Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap to a lather.

Scrub all surfaces: palms, backs, fingers, between fingers, under nails.

Scrub for 20 seconds (that’s the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice).

Don’t be afraid to ask those around you to do the same! To find other dates and times for flu

shot clinics, check out the Public Health website: https://bit.ly/2B7gvDg

Compost for Great Gardens This Spring!

Sitting on the patio on the northwest corner of the

Watertower Square is a black, round tumbling compost bin

with two chambers. The side having a plus marked on it

welcomes kitchen scraps, grass clippings, garden and house

plants, as well as leaves, straw, sawdust, and twigs.

If you have any of the above items and would be willing to contribute them, Jo Entwisle - who

won 1st in a drawing from Imagine Grinnell - would much appreciate it. Reducing household

waste is great for the environment!

Do not add meat/ fats/bones, dairy products, trash/ plastic, wood ashes, invasive

plants/ weeds (i.e. poison ivy). If all goes well, you may be welcome to some of the "cured"

contents of the compost bin next spring for your garden! Contact Jo Entwisle for questions:

BETWEEN THE BOOKENDS

In One Good Deed, David Baldacci introduces a new character: Archer, a

straight-talking former World War II soldier fresh out of prison for a crime he

didn't commit. He is sent to Poca City on parole with a list of do's and don'ts.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's

years serving in the war or his time in jail. When a murder takes place right

under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer

realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison...if he doesn't use

every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

Safe and Sound by Fern Michaels is the 29th book in the author's

Sisterhood Series. After striking up a friendship with Ben Ryan, a sweet,

funny and brilliant eight-year-old boy, Isabelle Flanders Tookus realizes the

child is in grave danger. Ben's stepfather - Connor and his wife, Natalie - are

using Ben's trust fund to support their lavish life style. When the trust fund

is depleted, plans ensue to murder the boy and inherit his money. Izzy calls

in the Sisterhood and together they conspire to entrap Connor and Natalie,

locate Ben's grandmother and father, and assure the safety and happiness of

this brilliant and ingratiating young boy. Safe and Sound is an engrossing

and fast paced read.
